@JDługosz I would think: literarily. However, it is one of those words that doesn't look right on the page. My apologies for ruining your sentence. Literally is a word that both retains its original meaning (of the the original meaning of a word) and its ironically used non-literal meaning as an intensifier. I should read more carefully when correcting.

A good editor, as I learned back in the days of print, knows the general voice and tone of the authors. I recall good ones and horror stories. Anyway, I only use literally in its denotation and make fun of people who use it to mean not-literally. A good use of irony is hard to do properly, and can be applied to any word; most uses of literally don’t pull it off and it comes across as if they don’t know what it means.

Do we have a question asking HOW vampires comb their hair or apply make-up if they don't reflect in a mirror? I did quick search, but found nothing.

Q: Do we need different tags for [horror] and [cosmic horror]?

Youstay IgoThere are two tags horror and cosmic-horror. I was wondering if horror alone was enough. Cosmic-Horror is a bit too specific and does not appear much different from horror. Thoughts?

@Miech When asking it, think about what question applies as accepted one. This one sentence so far seems being on verge of off topic.

@Miech - some questions like this are better answered within chat. We throw ideas around here, and some resolve into actual questions. You could argue that it's only humans who can't see the reflections of vampires (but vampires can).

9:57 AM
@Miech Blind people putting on Make-Up might be a good reference for this kind of problem
Hey guys, just wanted to ask why this question about a matriarchal society is still closed. I think it fits the site but nobody else has answered anything different.

@Secespitus As you were mentioned on meta answer, that question currently has 2 votes for reopen. As I have also enough priv to cast vote, I will try to read the question and if I consider it inside scope I will cast a vote
@Secespitus Vote for reopen

10:17 AM
@PavelJanicek Thanks for the feedback.

But now the question is quite narrow that simple "yes" is acceptable answer

Wouldn't a simple "yes" also need additional "because" to justify it being a valid answer?

Yeah. I am oversimplyfying if I want to make argument

I am still confused that this question looks on-topic and the only feedback on the Meta-Post and the chat of the user look good, but it's still closed. I am trying to understand why this is the case as it feels like I am missing something about the scope of the site.

@Secespitus I recently learned that wrong title is all you need to get question put on hold

@PavelJanicek But changing the title should allow the question to be reopened. This question was edited but not reopened and nobody told the author (and me) why the question is still not a good fit.

@Secespitus Reopening takes time. Reopening my question took about a day
It dwells in reopen queue and once it gets 5 votes it si being reopened
It currently has 3 votes to reopen

@PavelJanicek Yeah, but the Meta-Post was written and answered on February 26. This is more than a week. I thought we had more people with enough rep to reopen / comment on this question that are active once a week.

11:52 AM
@Secespitus I starred the original question of yours here in chat, it hopefully attacts more attention. But my assumption is "no one did cast original vote for reopen"

Thank you @PavelJanicek

mornin all

o_
meh, I'm too tired to wave
yesterday in my HEMA class we had a tournament. I lost three times.

afternoon

Morning, though it's more of "evening" around here

@DaaaahWhoosh Stop dying....jeez

@James that's the problem with training with the same people... I've gotten better, but so have they
and I've got skinny weak arms

2:49 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Cheese burgers and weights!

yeah... but complaining is so much easier than actually fixing problems
2
and once I get good gloves losing won't even hurt that much

@DaaaahWhoosh you amaze me

I'm only being half serious. I probably should start lifting weights or something
and I need to work on my footwork, lateral movement is hard in a fight

I've been in Taekwondo for about 6 months now and yeah, the most difficult thing for me is making sure my feet do what they are supposed to after a move...

yep. I'm really good at just jumping backwards (like a scared kitten), but that's more of an instinctual response. As is "block the sword with your fists!"

3:04 PM
I did Kendo for a while. I got told off more than a few times for my ingrained Kung Fu stance. It also trashed my feet on a weekly basis.

I am doing Krav Maga. But I am not so much worrying about my feet as much as I am worrying about that (rubber-)knife thrusting towards me.

Oooh. Russian SpecOps fighting. Cool, but deadly.

Q: Do our tags need tags?

HDE 226868I recently noticed that we have a hard-science tag on meta for meta questions about the hard-science tag on the main site. It's a nice idea; it can be used to organize the many meta discussions we've had on the subject, which can often be hard to find. Do we want to use this on other questions a...

6:34 PM
huh, I'm now going to add 'end of your quarter' to my list of phrases I wish could catch on
it's a euphemism for death, and we can never have too many of those

7:16 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh ...dare I ask, what spawned this comment?

@James there's a hot network question about the origin of 'game over man'
in which the guy who said it explained that 'game over' was displayed at the 'end of your quarter'
supposedly he meant that in an arcade, you payed a quarter to play a game, and when the game was over, so too ended the use of that quarter
and then I figured it'd be a good addition to the number of death euphemisms that already exist
such as kicking the bucket or passing on
ooh, that'd be an interesting explanation for putting money on people when you bury them
so they can continue in the next life
you also have a minute to bury them, before their cycle of rebirth is broken forever. It's a cruel system, but it gives new players a chance for their turn.

@DaaaahWhoosh ...I don't want to admit it but that is interesting

also, instead of karma they have the concept of 'tickets'. Doing good things earns you tickets, but you won't really be able to tell how many tickets you've gotten or what you can get with them until the game is over

7:34 PM
ok now I just want to play skeeball

yeah, me too
I'm starting to wonder, though, about the implications of a religion where you aren't penalized for doing bad things

@DaaaahWhoosh See Church of Bane
or were you talking about reality?

this is the Factory Floor; we never talk about reality
btw I just tried to look up 'church of Bane', I typed 'church of' and the first result was 'church of satan'.

@DaaaahWhoosh You should probably be concerned that google knows you that well.

maybe I should stop holding my phone upside down...

7:38 PM
thatll totally fix it.

but yeah, really though, say there was a religion where most people who die go to some Purgatory-type place, or are reincarnated somewhat randomly. Only good people go to heaven, but not making it to heaven is just kind of a bummer
because of atheism, I feel like it could work. But most religions end up having some bad place where bad people go
I'm just thinking, things like torture and beating children don't seem to have their intended outcomes. So, would a religion without negative enforcement work just as well as one with it?

@DaaaahWhoosh What exactly do you mean by negative enforcement?

oh, I think I mean negative reinforcement
I may be using the term incorrectly
I just mean, if there is a religion that doesn't suggest that bad things will happen if you do bad things, but only suggests that good things happen if you do good things, would that still work

I am struggling to understand what you're trying to say, so either that, or I'm just confused...

7:53 PM
like, say, Christianity without Hell. Sinners just go to Purgatory, which isn't all that bad.
if you're good you go to Heaven, which is great, if you're not good you basically get more of the same

In that case, maybe what I'm going to term evangelicals will disagree with me here, but I disagree that that's how Christianity works at all...

right, see, I think I agree. To some people, religion isn't about the bad things that will happen if you do things wrong. But that aspect seems to be introduced somewhat regularly

I mean, to me, an important point of Christianity is that the bad things you have/have not done are completely irrelevant
It's as difficult as "nobody's perfect, so don't judge anyone"

right, I mean I agree with you, but a lot of Christians don't see it that way

Ah, so do you mean "would a religion without anyone believing in negative reinforcement work just as well as one with it?"?
In my experience, the answer is: No, it's much, much better without negative reinforcement
Where by 'negative reinforcement', I actually mean "bad things will happen if you do bad things". My bad :P

8:03 PM
okay, so you suggest that all the fire and brimstone stuff is actually ineffective, and religions would be more effective without it

To completely rewrite what I just wrote: In my experience, it's much better when you don't have people running around telling others that because those others have done bad things, bad things will happen to them
@DaaaahWhoosh Yes. So much yes
I mean, bits of it had its time - not eating certain animals was a health risk at one point, so enforcing that had a value, but now (in the West, at least)? Not so much
Although judging other people because you think you're better than them? That never had a purpose or value... I'll shut up now, before I start on a massive rant :P

@Mithrandir24601 I think you may have already started...

@James Nah, that was just a small rant (sorry)

Rants are allowed

a 'rant' is actually a small rodent with a large scaly tail
in late summer, the rants begin their mating season
a male rant will beat its tail against a tree until a female appears
then the female will beat her tail against the male's head until he stops
thus, in places with a low population of females, rants can go on for days
as winter appoaches, rants' tails fall off, causing many of them to come down with a disease popularly known as 'butthurt'. Some say the sounds of a butthurt rant are even worse than their mating calls
rants store large stockpiles of food for the winter, for they do not hibernate. Instead, large communities of rants (called a 'cult') take this time to increase the size of their burrows, groom each other, and occasionally fight other cults
the early spring is a hard time for the rant. As they emerge from their burrows, rants have trouble adjusting to the light of the sun. Also, their tails, their main source of defense, are still growing back, thus they are ill-equipped to fend off predators
(I want to go on, but I probably shouldn't)

8:34 PM
It started of as a weird analogy, then quickly became very good :)

@DaaaahWhoosh You started drinking at breakfast today didn't you...

this is Worldbuilding, isn't it? I build worlds

Booze can be a muse... :|

I probably should've tried alcohol for breakfast today. I ran out of eggs this morning, decided to fill the void with cookies

That'll explain it then...

8:41 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh ...I had brownies with my coffee today. They were 5 days old so the outside was a little crunch...dipped in coffee they are exquisite.

8:52 PM
@James mmmmmmmmmmmmmm how am I expected to work under these conditions
all I can think of now is coffee and brownies, skeeball, and rant migrations in the spring

@DaaaahWhoosh ...I'm not expecting you to work if that helps.
@DaaaahWhoosh This is just plain old fashioned win right here.

Bother. I'm now imagining that oh so delicious smell of chocolate

@Mithrandir24601 When you say bother I assume you are actually Winnie the Pooh.

See, the problem is that I don't actually have any chocolate at the minute :/ OK, I have stuff with chilli in it, but it's not the same

9:00 PM
Excepting that I have plenty of honey, that's a pretty good description right now
