@MonicaCellio did you build the WBSE image used in the ad? If so, could I get a copy of the image that underlies the text? If you don't mind, I'd like to use a bit of that image in proposing an RPGSE ad to run over here.

@nitsua60 I'm just the messenger; @overactor is the creator of the ad. Overactor, see ^^^ for a question from RPG.

@nitsua60 sure, do you want just the planet our with the background included?

@bowlturner Sure, for example self driving cars....within 20 years the number of driving jobs is going to start dropping noticeably

1:08 PM
Since some of your are from the USA, shouldn't the primary elections start in some states pretty soon?

@overactor hi overactor--I think planet with background would be best, thanks. I'll run anything I come up with by you first for approval.

I am both happy and amazed that my transition to post scarcity question hasn't earned any down votes. I hope it stays that way.

@bowlturner ...you might as well just say 'Its my last day and then I get to go home to my wife' or 'what could possibly go wrong?' or 'Its just a portal to another dimension itll be fine'

@James So your saying I'm temping fate eh? Very well could be.
Though I was posting this because I couldn't believe it's gone this long, not that I don't expect to downvotes.

3:26 PM
@bowlturner well...I was tempted to go downvote it...I resisted.
(it already has my upvote lol)

You treat wasp nests as pinatas don't you?

...on occasion.
I made fun of my boss's boss's boss's political opinions the other day in a meeting...it was funny.
...for me

I probably would have laughed with you.
And then at you.

3:40 PM
I will say I'm enjoying the answers I'm getting to that question. I really am interested in how we will switch from one type to the other. Most are denying it is even a possibility. Some have good arguments other are just parroting what they heard to boost their world view.

@bowlturner as it should be
@bowlturner Yeah there are some good ones in there.

We get stuck in our ruts. I've had questions and answer here challenge my way of thinking a few times. It's good for us.

4:09 PM
@bowlturner One of my favorite things about SE is that I learn more from the questions I don't ask than the ones I do. Every question is like an insight into another point of view
like, for instance, have you ever noticed that the phrase 'barking up the wrong tree' is confusing, because 'barking' can actually refer to removing the bark from a tree?

@DaaaahWhoosh Yes, there are a whole host of topics I've learned a lot about. And improved my understanding of too. Space and travel and star formation etc.
no I haven't thought about that, mostly because I grew up with dogs!

that's my point though, there are some things we can never see except through other people's eyes
so many people come to Stack Exchange for one thing and then leave. People like us who linger get the real benefits from it

Yes. That is why I try to understand peoples point of view, even if I disagree with it.

I don't know if you can 'disagree' with someone's point of view. But I've been finding for a while that words don't seem to mean what they used to any more
like, I have an understanding of what words are supposed to mean, but I also know how other people are using them, and I tend to agree with their ideas but find their words inadequate
like in this case, where I don't like the word 'disagree'

OK, I should have said, " I try to understand peoples point of view to help understand their opinions thoughts on a matter even if I disagree with them"
As in 'why do they believe in such rubbish?' and not just assume they are stupid

4:27 PM
Ah, yes, then, in that case I agree with you.

4:59 PM
@bowlturner I'm not even seeing that question in your question history for some reason...

Downvoting a non hard science question is silly IMHO. It's one thing if the question is to open ended or whatever, but downvoting just because the question doesn't fit your world view is immature

Well no has yet downvoted it. But I have had questions voted down because people didn't like the implied premise behind it.

@AndyD273 You're on the internet. People come here for the beautiful vistas, long walks on the beach and personal belief (no matter how delusional) reinforcement.

I get that

5:05 PM
Some people even believe Trump will save the US! ;)

It does irritate me.
I kind of follow the "a question has to be really dumb to be a dumb question" idea.

Ya, I'm more likely to close it for a good reason than downvote it.

@bowlturner In a small way, he might. Not his big ideas, but he's very polarizing, and so people will show their colors. Also, he's showing that people are really tired of the PC thing, so maybe it'll help kill it faster, which I'm ok with.
Other's may be willing to express non-PC views, though to a less extreme amount.
I don't think PC is bad in theory, it's just gone to far in practice.

Polarizing personalities is one of the biggest problems we have with our current political system. If you aren't with us your against us! Not very useful for cooperation to actually do things to improve the nation

It might help to weed out the crazy in your personal circle though

5:11 PM
ha! That's about a 1/4 of my family. But I love them anyways.

of course

@bowlturner Oh man that sounds familiar.

:)
Oh, wow, I have a chance of breaking 200 two days in a row! I've never had a question do this well this fast before, which is helping.

5:36 PM
@bowlturner I'm regretting not posting an answer to that question, I probably could've gotten an easy 100 rep from it
but I guess if I'd done that, I wouldn't be able to enjoy having 8888 reputation today.
I recently missed enjoying having 88888 miles on my car. It's so hard to remember to look down at the right moment.

Take a screen shot :)
*Looks for an answer to +1*
Huh, I'm only 4 votes from 10k. Gotta find a good question to answer

I could probably help you out with that, even though I am very jealous that you have more rep than me
Actually, I could really help you. I can selectively downvote and upvote to give you exactly 10k

5:53 PM
hehe, that would be interesting, but I'm ok

Show a new answer to an old question some love.
1
A: What single element could destroy the world?

browlySulfur But use it to freeze the earth, not for burning. You only need on the order of $10^{11}$ kg. And all the science is available today. I'm cross-posting this answer from How much Sulfur Dioxide is needed to freeze life on earth?, which was inspired by this question. What is the extinction...

9:01 PM

@James Wow, that is a good answer. $7 billion to kill everyone.

@DaaaahWhoosh Right!? I was happy to get another good answer on that one.

@James Nice! +1 to that guy. Hope he gets a Necromancer badge out of it.

@HDE226868 It confuses me how we keep on finding planets orbiting other stars, but can't find all the ones orbiting our own

@DaaaahWhoosh Most of the methods we use for those won't work in the Solar System.
We can't see the planet transiting the Sun, since it's never between us and the Sun.
Any impact on the Sun's radial velocity would be negligible.
I would assume that microlensing would be difficult for something in the Oort Cloud.
Direct detection methods . . . ugh. Not easy.
I'm really surprised they may have found something, given that there's not a lot they can use.

9:09 PM
Though they actually postulated a planet of that size decades ago, maybe even before Pluto was found

@bowlturner That happened so many times.
Following the discovery of the planet Neptune in 1846, there was considerable speculation that another planet might exist beyond its orbit. The search began in the mid-19th century and culminated at the start of the 20th with Percival Lowell's quest for Planet X. Lowell proposed the Planet X hypothesis to explain apparent discrepancies in the orbits of the giant planets, particularly Uranus and Neptune, speculating that the gravity of a large unseen ninth planet could have perturbed Uranus enough to account for the irregularities. Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto in 1930 appeared to validate...

They appear to be gathering more information to support it

Maybe Pluto was just a diversion...

Well my understanding was that pluto WASN'T large enough to account for some of the observations

Learning new stuff about the solar system is somehow always awesome...
There are times this site makes me worried that a lot of people don't know how to read.

9:19 PM
does that include reading comprehension?

@bowlturner Primarily.

There seem to be a lot of non-English speakers, reading English could be difficult for them?

Some of the comments I am getting on the religion die off question are killing me.

ooh, I just answered that one, I want to see

9:20 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh that is a small number of the ones I think James and I are referring

@DaaaahWhoosh That may be part of it but...jeez. Rather than downvoting and being angsty, just ask if you have a question/concern.

@James the vast majority of my downvotes are related to religious topics

Well, religion is a special case. Sometimes you aren't allowed to ask questions.

@bowlturner I suppose, I don't feel like I said anything outlandish but then again religion tends to inflate disagreement...

Absolutely.

9:24 PM
remember the religion challenge back in summer?

If someone can somehow take offense, they will. Like your wife in an argumentative mood.
yep. I got a lot of flags then

@bilbo_pingouin Lol yeah that was good times.

not flags, downvotes...

We could have a look at the stats, but I'm pretty sure views, and DV increased for 2 weeks!

ya, things were hopping pretty good

9:26 PM
Whoa, I didn't know DVK was on this site.

@bilbo_pingouin I vaguely recall someone doing some queries to pull stats on that. Pretty sure that's true.

@James I could probably whip up a query for it
I did one for since that was about our most popular challenge at the time

@DaaaahWhoosh he is. Well in some forms at least. I somehow read a story about multiple personalities DVK...

@bilbo_pingouin I just know him because he answered all the Force Awakens questions on SFF

weapons followed religion, I'm pretty sure the exposure we got for the one, helped for the more consensual second
@DaaaahWhoosh he is pretty active on SFF... not only for TFA questions

9:29 PM
@bilbo_pingouin I feel like repeating and doing another Religion challenge would be worthwhile.
2

@bilbo_pingouin Oh, I had fun asking some questions there.

@James put it on the list :)

For some reason, it looks like I missed that challenge, so I'd definitely vote for it to come back

well I do feel that some challenges should come back...

Oh, that might've been when my laptop broke
but yeah, we should bring back the popular ones at least

9:37 PM
so it's probably a good idea to suggest it for the challenge list, and see how people feel about it.
Do they have the faith in a renewed religion challenge?

facepalm

sorry

@James Ah, you're now entering into a religious argument. Well, I might as well continue to jump in.

@HDE226868 I have not idea what is going on right now...his last comment seems to contradict itself.

@James He's saying (I think) that Adam and Eve are/were real.

9:42 PM
@HDE226868 ...the majority of christians don't even believe that.

@TimB Apologies for deleting my question (cc @Iszi), but you guys were right; it's too broad.

@XandarTheZenon No, they're fictional. They are not real. Most of the world agrees on that. — HDE 226868 3 mins ago
Waits for response.
Oh, I got one. Not one I like.

Not that I normally consider wikipedia for a legitimate source but.... There is no physical evidence that Adam and Eve ever actually existed, and their existence is incompatible with human evolutionary genetics.

That's kind of a kicker.

@HDE226868 yeah, I may not like what it tells me sometimes but I don't argue with science.
I added religion to the topics thread on meta btw.

9:48 PM
Saw it. Will upvote when I can get to meta.
Aaand I withdraw from the comments. He's throwing insult accusations; I throw silence in return.
Okay, fine, I give in because I don't like people misunderstand what it means to have a "theory". But now I'm gone from there.

yeah the irony is thick on the "i respect your opinions line"

I so want to yell "They're not opinions! They're statements backed up by a lot of facts!", but that would be a terrible idea, given what it would imply about his statements.

...yeah as tempting as it is...

@XandarTheZenon You're missing the point I'm trying to make by talking about unrelated things. It's clear that I'm not getting anywhere, and it's becoming unconstructive, so I'm going to delete my comments. — HDE 226868 2 mins ago

"people need to earn money to live. They shouldn't be able to live off of other people's money for their entire lives."
A comment I received on my question. Then I stopped.
I think we have a young ultra conservative.

9:59 PM
@bowlturner I'd agree with them, but that's not even what your question is about. It's not other people's money, it's everyone's money.

Exactly.
I might yet get 4 badges in 1 "day" from that question yet! Less than 200 views needed! woot!
For a while at least we had 3 questions on the HQ list as well today

I often wonder how well our site would do without the Hot Questions list

Much poorer. MANY claim to have found us by that list

Yeah... I think I have a couple questions people may have actually found by searching for them, but other than that and the occasional migration I don't think people would come here too often

I'm sure that is the only reason my Mosquito assassin made it over 6500 views. SO

10:11 PM
Mosquito Assassin???!?! I need to see this

1 hour later…
11:17 PM
@bowlturner It looks like I upvoted the question, but not any of the answers, so I guess I saw it initially and forgot to check back. It's pretty interesting though, I like the one about antimatter and the one that just injects air bubbles.
