@BESW nice. we've not really had non-fiction before! are you working on something like you describe?

I've edged toward the idea in a few RPG campaigns.

But mostly that's just a response to reading that series.

I find a challenge like that a good starting point for ideas

I enjoyed the film and sought out the books; I've read the first three and found them... a little unformed and culturally insensitive, but also very creative and bubbling with an unclouded optimism I don't see a lot in contemporary novels.

I haven't read or watched them, but I think I've heard of the Rise of the Guardians

I keep thinking about picking up American Gods. Although I think it's TV series now?

American Gods is one of Gaiman's less formulaic books, which is nice. It's got problems, but is trying to address some very important and often overlooked issues with cultural assimilation.

You may also find Nnendi Okorafor's Lagoon interesting on the topic.

It's a scifi "aliens arrive with inscrutable purpose" story, but set in the Nigerian city of Lagos, written by a Lagosian, and very much the product of that place in terms of themes and handling.

So it takes a Western staple of scifi and approaches it through a distinctly Nigerian attitude.
