Q: Should MLA make an exception to the rule of "always post last updated date" for articles about recent events?

moonman239Just an example: Suppose I were writing an essay in which I mentioned Ferguson, and I started this essay the day after the news broke out, when I found an article written and published between the two dates. In this article, someone presents stuff I can use in my essay, so I want to cite the art...

> [Handle with care] Alternate history that drops magic powers or anachronistic technology into a historical setting.
> Your story must be set before 1935 C.E. (NO exceptions), and take place primarily in our world or an alternate historical version of our world.
given that it's fiction it will, by default, be an alternative universe
and given that it has to be set in the past, it will be alternative history
so, if you chose fantasy you must be very careful about adding in magic
which seems quite counter intuitive

Q: How formal should an article be?

Name changed to mask identityI write articles, poems and essays but usually I tend to make them informal. My question is "Is it ok to write in a new style or informal style". Do I have to follow the normal rules of writing and keep everything in the format every other writer writes in? By informal, I mean, my own writing st...

@MattE.Эллен They're just saying "Be careful if you saturate the setting with magic." Which is good advice; magic-heavy stories have a lot of narrative pitfalls.
Not saying "Don't do it," just pointing out potential things to watch out for.

fair enough.

Q: Should I create my own ConLang for my story?

WeekzGodFor my story I'm writing some of the characters speak a different language from the protagonists. Should I actually create a ConLang (constructed language) for them and use it in dialog OR should mention that they speak a different language and continue as normal and make the reader assume the p...

Hi!
Oh.
Hi StackExchange.

5:59 PM
@KitZ.Fox Hello!
My cousin is in the army now. He has depression and got a week of leave. He doesn't want to go back.
Are you still around? Ping me when you return!

6:29 PM
@ABeautifulMind Hi!

@KitZ.Fox I feel terrible now, largely because of what I just told you in the latest email. I will try to find a way...

I'm sorry you feel terrible. Maybe some sleep would help?

Thanks, just woke up from a nap though. Sometimes I think a lot, then I feel tired, then I have to rest for a while. But it might be better to try to stick to more normal hours. We'll see.

Green vegetables, sunlight, water, exercise.

When the time comes for me to check those things, I guess it would be alright if I get help from a therapist. Oh, in some cases, maybe I would need to get help from the police too.
So lots of people will know that I am crazy, but I will need the courage to do what I need to do in the end.
I am not going to have to walk in public naked or anything like that though, but the things I might need to do are weird enough.
Are you working at home today?

6:46 PM
No, I'm at work.
A therapist will be a good ally.

When all this shit is finally over, I will feel so different. I look forward to that day. I am not sure if it would come, but I hope it does.
I would like to borrow a line from A Beautiful Mind:
I need to believe that something extraordinary is possible.

Life changes gradually. I did not go to sleep one night with a fractured identity and then wake up the next morning as a whole person.

I knew things could worsen, but I never expected I would reach the stage today.
It's actually kind of unbelievable, what is happening to me. It's like I don't know who I am anymore sometimes.
Anyway, I am just saying random things that may not make sense to you.
It's always good to see you in this chat. You should come more often!
I am going to eat something now and take a shower.

7:15 PM
Quick question
Not 100% sure what this room is.
I mean, I understand it,
but.
Anyone got a clear explanation?
Do you just share writing here?
Are all kinds of writing welcome?
Poetry?
Literature?
ETC?
Why am I talking in slow blocks?
We may never know.
Am I alone?
Are we truly ever with others?
Or are we lost forever, twisted and frayed within our own minds?
The world forever distorted.
We stand and believe we are friends.
But we truly not know one another.
We only know what we think we know.
Given in fragments from the other, likely strangulating his truth/
As he is also alone/
For you do the same
We all lie to the other
we cannot speak else than lies.
For even the truths we hold about ourselves
Can never be justified,
In the endless void of time
Sucking all away
Forgotten another day
Beneath our ego's deadly ray
-endpoem-

I am back.

7:30 PM
@DeltaEscher Yes, generally all kinds of writing are welcome.
@DeltaEscher This is the chat room for Writers.SE.
We share writing here and chat about writing and other stuff.
I'm not really here right now. I'm writing stuff for work.

7:43 PM
I had a fish burger just now. It's almost 4 am.

7:53 PM
How is the ear infection?

8:07 PM
All better, I think.
I'm headed home. Later!

OK, keep me in your prayers!

@Kit Z. Fox
Bleh, failed replying

She's gone.

@KitZ.Fox
ARGH
I know.

What do you need?

8:11 PM
May as well leave a message
Just thanking him/her

You just type @ k and then use autocomplete.

At least with that reply my poem isn't completely understood as insani-
NVM, Definitely insanity.
@K

Your poem is not insane, but I am.

@KitZ.Fox Thanks
There.
I'm insane too.
Want the first chapter of a book I wrote?

I suffer from MDD, PTSD, OCD.
Sorry, I don't want to read now.

8:13 PM
I suffer from ADHD, Autism and vocal tics.
+ Frequent migraines
Like earthquakes

I have not been working for almost 8 years. I am trying to get well and get on with life.

I'm trying to get a life.
I have no idea what I'm doing.
I can't see a future ahead of me.

No words can describe the suffering I have gone through.
@DeltaEscher Are you working?

No.
I go to a school.

Can you work in future?

8:15 PM
Maybe so.
I just have no morality whatsoever.

What do you mean?

I can't differ between right and wrong.

Because of your autism?

I see all of my actions as correct and never think twice.
@ABeautifulMind Pretty Much

I don't understand. Is that part of autism?

8:16 PM
Kind of, but it's also me.

AFAIK, autistic people are not like that.

I just don't have that line that I can see.

People with no morality are the psychopaths, like my father.

He abused me for 20 years until I went mad.

8:17 PM
I don't mean it like that, but I can't see what's truly a wrong thing.

Do you have a religion?

No. My parents are not religious people.
Maybe I am at heart, but it's hard to get into something you don't do immediately.

I come to this chat mostly to chat with Kit, because she doesn't talk in other rooms.

Oh. It's been nice talking to you though.
I almost forgot that I had work to do.
I have to write a 75 page essay on coding languages.

@DeltaEscher What school is that?

8:21 PM
Charter.

What is charter school?

A school where you choose your path.
You choose what projects you do, and your teachers decide the amount of credits you earn.
You still have to earn basic credits, like math and science, but your electives are your choice.

I see. It's a school for autistic people?

No, but most of the people here came to this school for a reason, I should say.
Recommended for reasons pertaining to whatever, from antisocial to bullied.

I see. I hope I get well soon.

8:24 PM
It's a pretty good school though.
I hope you do too, you're a pretty good person.

I am 33 now. I guess you are around 16.

13.
Earlier diagnosed as gifted, but that wears off after a while.
You start to just stop and not go anywhere.
Pushing work away and never reaching any goals you set.
I have my essay set around a week from now.
About 20 pages into writing it and at about 5-ish a day.
I'll probably just throw away some time I would sleep to write it.
You're great, you know.

My life is a very sad story.
My father moved out a few years ago.

You're having a worse time than me and you just listen and not complain.

I live with my mum and she is taking care of me. I do complain.

8:31 PM
You make me feel like my problems are stupid.

There is a time for everything. A time to listen and a time to talk.

You ever think of writing a book?
Idiots will buy any book about someone having a worse time than them.
I probably would.

I will be 34 this year. I hope that I can get well soon, study and then go to graduate school by 40.
But it is possible I may never recover from my mental problems.

I hope you do too.
Trust me. You will.
You are a great person and you will never be brought down.

Thank you. I hope you can live a fulfilling life despite your mental conditions.

8:33 PM
I think this already is doing that.
You are a great person to talk to.
90% of my chatting to you is blocked by how much I want to respond so quickly.

I don't understand much about autism. I read Wikipedia but still don't get it, lol.

It's basically like the world is in fast motion, but only when it'll screw you over.

I guess someone without OCD will not understand what OCD is like either.

Many urinals welcome my face with glee.
What is OCD like?

It's like you do things over and over again because you are not sure. Some people keep washing their hands because they fear germs.
Some people keep checking things because they fear the tap might not be turned off.
Some people have to count to 100 before doing anything.

8:36 PM
I keep coughing because I fear there's something there.

Q: Attributing a real quote to a fictional character

Mac CooperI've looked at a few fictional character quote questions on here but none seem to hit onto my question: Can I attribute a real quote to a fictional character? That is, can I take a quote that was said by a real person, and attribute it to an original character (who is, if it makes a difference,...

Some people have to walk 10 rounds before entering a building.
So there are many different OCD types.
But this description is not adequate for someone to understand what it feels. You must have it yourself to really know.
I guess I will never really understand autism either.
Can you say more about autism?

We'll only vaguely guess.
It's pretty much that you have no filter.
You say everything you say, and make sure you assert that you mean it.
You fear that every thought you have will come out, because it usually does.
You have no perception of authority or why it's there.
Petty theft means nothing.
You collect erasers and supplies just because you feel like it.
You have epiphanies and throw them away in a day.

I am male. I guess you are male as well? Don't worry, I am not hitting on you. =)

Correct.

8:40 PM
Just now, I thought you might have been a girl, because only girls talk so much, lol.

I just talk so much because [@list_item_1]
Wow.
I forgot I had to work.
I'll reply, but they'll be more sparse.
I was on break a while ago.

OK, see you. I am Jasper. Sometimes I change my username to Jasper or Will Hunting.
But I usually have this blue square as my pic. Sometimes people will try to impersonate me, lol.
I have this habit of deleting my accounts, so sometimes I will start with a new SE account.

Our school comp caches photos.
You have none.
Send me an email though: officialdeltaescher@gmail.com
You're nice to talk to.
If you're still there, just please send a ping.
Last one.

@DeltaEscher I just sent you an email.

Alright.
God, this five seconds to reply thing
This is a chatroom, not the actual forum.
Replied.
Intensely staring at inbox XD

8:53 PM
Something wrong with my email account, fixing it.

@ABeautifulMind That's alright. It's just I didn't even know you two hours ago and now I've forgotten I had to work.

I usually hang out in the Eng room and the Math room. Rooms 95 and 36.

First time in a chat room.
I usually hang out around Lifehacks and StackOverflow though.
Mostly the former, the latter is killing me from having to think so hard about things I do not understand.

outlook sucks, I will change to gmail when I have thought of a username.
I studied math as an undergrad.

Going to try Game Design.
Hard to get a class in intro to IT in a charter though.

9:00 PM
Are you from the US?

Yes?
Bleh, question mark.

I am from Singapore, a small island in Asia.

That's cool.
I assumed you were in the US too, so that's definitely a shocker for me XD

I usually talk to Kit about my problems these days, she helps me a lot.

You fixed all my problems already.
So maybe it's rubbing off.

9:02 PM
If you need a listening ear, you can come to chat. Lots of folks here are nice and have problems too.

Writers tend to have such,
SUCH AS PUNCTUATION FAILING THEM
ahem

grammarbook.com is a good site for basic grammar and punctuation in American English.

I meant more the keyboard

Yeah, I know.

I almost flat out refuse to not punctuate long sentences, even in chat rooms.

9:05 PM
I have the emails of about 2 dozen SE folks, maybe 3.

Stack Exchange

Oh, the general community.
That's pretty good.
I only have one

Wow, I feel very special now, lol.

Oh, wait NVM

9:09 PM
I guess you have a few more.

I have a couple from some SO programmers for some interviews for my project.
You know, my project is the reason I went on the SE community.
Either that, or I think it was an XKCD comic....

Aha. Also, you are the first person to tell me your email first.

Pretty gullible person.
Didn't even question online impersonation lol

It's good to be cautious of people.

IF THAT IS YOUR REAL TERM
I have some basic logic

9:13 PM
You won't find anything about me online though. I don't have anything online.

Quote unquote basic
Just scrolled up.
This conversation is... OFF THE SCREENNNNNNNNNNNN
Oh.
Got to go, might see you again some time

OK, see you.

1 hour later…

Writing women characters as human beings. Useful beyond just writing female characters, as it talks about how background elements change narratives, and the ways that stuff like misguided "historical accuracy" limit the kinds of things we can even imagine.
