@Stephie hi, how is your family doing?
I am busy these days, but I lurk here in chat, hoping to see news about your son

@rumtscho great news: first day in four weeks with (almost) no headache!

@Stephie yay

(Keeping all fingers crossed, knocking on wood etc.)

wow, I didn't realize he is having the symptoms constantly, for some reason thought they are intermittent

@Stephie what did they do?

3:14 PM
does the hospital have anything to say? Are the test results out already?

@rumtscho the results are the epitome of "no findings".
In other words, we know a lot of things that are not the cause.

Sounds relieving and frustrating at once
I have the vague idea that the first things which they would search for with these symptoms are the ones you would never wish on somebody, so it's great they are excluded

Yes. But sometimes you wish for an "it's X, so do Y and everything will be fine".

I know :(

So after a truly stressful week, I decided to do something childish / lighthearted / funny and tried to spray my hair blue. (It's Fasching, after all!) Didn't work.

3:30 PM
o0

In the sense that you don't feel lighthearted, or in the sense that your hair did not become blue?

not blue.

for some reason I have a mental image of someone using spray paint on their hair

@JourneymanGeek it doesn't look that differently, only the paint used is meant for hair, not walls
it is indeed some pigments which stay on top of the hair and get washed out next time under the shower. Not a real hair dye.
@Stephie when all else fails, there is always blue fingernails.

I stole a clip-on strand from minor 2...
Off to Zumba, nails have to wait!

3:39 PM
I wish you a good workout!

2 hours later…
5:48 PM
in the "what is the world coming to" vein
there was an amok run in my city 3 hours ago
knife only, 3 people wounded, then the police wounded the perpetrator
it was in front of a department store where I shopped yesterday

@rumtscho eeeeek! Will check the news asap.

I don't think it has reached the big news outlets yet

6:13 PM

6:57 PM
Anyone still here?

7:15 PM
@Jolenealaska yep.
Was here-ish - around the network.

Hi Stephie! I read up in the transcript, I feel your pain
It makes why I am in mourning today seem trivial :(
But I am very sad
Alaska has lost its only professional sports team. I have been a fan and have been to many games.
The Alaska Aces hockey team is no more
They're shutting down after this season
The rest of the league is probably pretty happy, Anchorage hockey fans lacked decorum.

@Jolenealaska sadness is personal. We can not quantify our feelings. If something makes you sad, nobody can judge.
That said: I'm sorry!
Did you go to games occasionally?

Yep. I've probably been to 20.

@Jolenealaska what happened to them?

Our home game win rate was phenomenal, I probably saw them win 15 times.
@rumtscho They weren't making enough money.

7:28 PM
!@#$%% !!!

Perhaps a substantial gift could change things, but it doesn't seem to be forthcoming.
We had a fairly fun (if quite rude) tradition. Fans would throw fish heads on the ice after Alaska's first goal every game

Yuck!
Were they at least fresh, or....?

Sometimes the game had to be paused for ice clean up.

If I were a player, I would hate my fans

I'd throw them back!

7:32 PM
@Stephie Not rotten, people would save them in the freezer for the purpose.

has anybody ever been confused and scored with a fish head instead of a puck?

And thaw them or use them as solid object?
@rumtscho LOL! Just imagining this....
Salmon, I suppose?

@Stephie yep usually

I am sure that Alaska has more fish to offer than just salmon!

@rumtscho Fans would have loved that :)
@Stephie Probably both :)

7:36 PM
@rumtscho but who would even notice something the size of sardine heads?

We are also big halibut folks.
Mostly it was all about annoying the visiting team.

The piscine equivalent of "Boooooo!"?

We did that too!

I would never have assumed them to be mutually exclusive!

The announcers were a hoot. I've never been to a professional hockey game elsewhere, so I don't know how common this is. When Alaska scored, the announcers were loud and jubilant (aiding and abetting bad behavior). When the opposing team scored, they announced it as quietly as possible.
If you weren't paying attention, you could miss it.

7:49 PM
So here's what I imagine:
A bunch of enthusiastic fans, slightly tipsy (because you have to chugg your beer, you need your hands free for the fish tosses) and having a good party. Then after the game, they wonder where on earth the goals for the guest team came from. ^_^

It happens just like that! :)

Remove the fish and the ice and the players and add weird costumes and you have a pretty good idea of what's up in some areas here until Wednesday morning.

Is it a lent thing?
(pre-lent)

Yep.

The only town that does that here is New Orleans

7:57 PM
In the Cologne / Düsseldorf region, some shops and offices close on Monday & Tuesday.
Not here, though.

No one shuts down for Fat Tuesday here. Especially not in New Orleans.

Silvia (my host) is now watching the live program from Duesseldorf
they are good
and just now, there were also foxtrott dancers
they wore such dresses, I would spend years learning to dance just to be able to wear such a dress in public

I have worked on more Fasnet (local term) events that participated.

they had flesh colored bodices with some silver sequins

Neat!
So when are you starting to train?

8:02 PM
and then about halfway down the shank, they had daffodil yellow long godets, pressed in Falten
I really have forgotten how this is called in English
This is the dance group with the dresses

@rumtscho pleats.

@Stephie I have also never participated, except for once during highschool

I saw a dress the other day that had me noticing. Lovely. I'll see if I can find it, George Clooney's wife, visibly pregnant:

@rumtscho What's keeping you?

8:06 PM
Too many other things on my list to try?
I was really surprised to find out that it is already Fasching again

Nice dress!

although the presence of Berliner in the bakeries was a bit of a tip-off the last weeks. But only in a vague "sometimes soon" sense.
is this (supposed to represent) dog pelt?

I'd guess feathers.
I'll get to buy a new ball gown / cocktail dress soon!

The article calls them feathers, but I don't know if they are real feathers. Not impressed huh? I really do think it's a lovely dress, and that's not something I notice often.
@Stephie Oooh! Fun!

I am impressed
it still looks a lot dog-like to me

8:10 PM
That's something I doubt I will ever do again.

@Jolenealaska and always a cause for self-criticism. The I should really have stuck to that diet feeling.

I know some people love that, when I look around on knitter and spinner forums, there are always people who want to learn to spin just because they want sweaters out of their own dog's hair

@Stephie resist!

@Stephie what's the event?

@rumtscho free tickets to the "Abschlussball" (English term?!?) in March for participating in the Zumba show. I kind of nag-pleaded hubby into it.

8:13 PM
Prom? Or Abschluss of what?

@rumtscho ok, so the long explanation.

@rumtscho I don't like the color on the bodices on the dresses of the dancers. I probably would love those dresses if the bodices matched the skirt.

Teens (usually in the 15 +/- range) take their first dancing classes. Today, that includes "good behaviour lessons" like until a few decades ago.

Ah, OK. The neighbour's daughter is doing that too. She is 18 (the one whose rabbit died on her 18th birthday) and appalled at the missing rhythm sense of the 14 year olds who are trying it for the first time

@Stephie So the kids are performing?

8:21 PM
Twice a year, the dancing school hosts a Premiere Ball, where the kids and their parents see them show what they learned. A bit like a "coming out" - in the Victorian, not modern sense.
And everyone gets to dance, there are shows... Just like a regular ball.

I have never been to a regular ball, except my prom, which was a ball in name only

That sounds really nice.

the Jurists at university had a yearly ball, but we economists had a party.

Apparently coming out parties are still a thing in the deep south, but other than that, things like that just aren't done here.

And I have been to..... hm... well over a dozen? Mostly during my time as assistant teacher. The last few times I just got to sneek a peek, minor 2 did shows.

8:23 PM
Oh, I am called for dinner - a rabbit. The cook grumbles that it is tough because it was too old and/or hung too long, I want to find out if it is really that bad or if he is just in a grumbly mood.
I will come back to hear more about the balls!

@rumtscho enjoy. If possible ;-)

@rumtscho and I want to hear about dinner!

@Jolenealaska, could you take a quick look at the latest question, please?
Ah, you did...

putting it on hold now

Agreed.

8:38 PM
if you want to maintain a competitive advantage you just don't publish the recipe!

Neat - all mods more or less here. Question:
Do we have an official opinion re. cooking with cannabis?
If not, I might post a Meta question. Later. Like, tomorrow.

8:58 PM
there's something old on meta
5
Q: Should cooking with drugs (legal or illegal) questions be on topic?

rfuscaShould cooking with drugs (such as this question - especially before the edit) (legal or illegal) questions be on topic? I'm just going to leave it simple and at that.

with a Shog answer

Perfect, thanks!
Bedtime for me

good night

@Stephie we have had at least one here (cooking with cannabis question) that is still open as far as I know.

It was closed and opened several times when it was new, so I don't know if it stayed open in the end or not

9:12 PM
as for "distasteful stuff", we have also hammered close sperm cheese questions, it was usually Hobodave who did it (slightly surprisingly, considering his peppered appearance in chat)

Although one reference to cannabis is just incidental
Is sperm cheese a real thing?

I am happy to not know that!
I am pretty sure you could coagulate it if you wanted to, what's in it, proteins and a bit of carbs?

9:28 PM
well, there's questions based on actual problems you face, and then there's trolling masked as hypothetical questions

why did we come to this topic? did somebody ask a cannabis question on main today?

9:46 PM
Stephie's perfecting her recipes I guess
