@Stephie Hello. Thanks for your kindly welcome!

user208178
Peace out.

8:14 AM
Hello world!

1 hour later…
9:14 AM
Hallo zusammen!

9:28 AM
hi

3 hours later…
12:54 PM
The national food of India is a "food safety" question?

Huy
I bought a cheap bamboo cutting board from IKEA and the instructions tell me to oil it with some vegetable oil before I use it. almost every website recommends using a mineral oil though. what's the difference (when applying one vs. the other)?

1:16 PM
Sounds like a good question for the main site...

2 hours later…
3:12 PM
hi

2 hours later…
4:47 PM
@Catija what am I missing here?

@Stephie A spam question that was deleted earlier today.
I think you may still be able to see it... I can't any more. cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/69352/…

Ah, now it makes sense!
It's Memorial Day, right?

It is!

So everyone prepping for a picknick and "allowed" to wear white according to tradition?

It's supposed to be raining all day here... though it's beautiful out right now.

4:53 PM
We had incredible flooding in some places last night.
85 liters of rain per square meter. In an hour.

Wow, that is a ton of rain. :(
I think... we measure in inches rather than volume.

Huy
5:33 PM
@Catija: you said you had the OXO Pop boxes, right?

@Huy Yep. The square ones.

Huy
@Catija: did you just buy the set or did you buy more and more at a later time?

I bought them all one at a time because I wanted to have the specific sizes I needed rather than being stuck with the sizes that come in the sets.

Huy
ah, ok
so how many of them do you have, approximately?

16 or so total in just about every size from the smallest to one of the large 8"x8"x15" or so... we use it for measuring water for our beer brewing... though we used to keep cat food in it.

Huy
5:38 PM
I see. I'm just thinking about getting a few and getting more as I need them, but I feel like I'll need more of them really fast and spend way too much :(

It really depends on what all you want them for. We don't like having open boxes, so we have them for flour, sugar, corn starch, powdered sugar, brown sugar... even sugar packets of stevia etc... I like having them match, so I bought more than I really needed... it's easy to use less expensive containers for stuff that doesn't need to be sealed.
I'm also crazy and use two different types of all purpose flour... so ... yeah.

Huy
yeah, but then again I hate having like 5 differently looking sets of "storage boxes"

I think it can depend on where you're storing them. I have almost all of my containers in the same cabinet, so it's nice that they stack up so perfectly... they're designed to fit well together.

Huy
I see

If you have some on the counter, though and others in a cabinet... it can be less important that they all match each other.

Huy
5:42 PM
well, I'm very likely going to move by the end of the year, so I don't quite know yet what the kitchen will look like :/
yeah, that's true

Yeah... but then you can rearrange... or reassess... The ones I really find need the containers are flour and sugar. The rest doesn't matter. Those two are pretty bug-prone and humidity-sensitive.
I keep my cornmeal in the freezer, so it stays in the bags it comes in rather than going in a container...

Huy
I think I'll just use some cheap IKEA one's until I move and maybe get (and let people gift me) some when I'm in the different flat

Plus rice and pasta.

House warming parties!

Huy
I bought some of those Korken ones today, @Stephie, one of each size so I can check which I can use best and how many I need :)

5:45 PM
@Stephie Yeah, I keep rice in them... but pasta I really just keep in the boxes... I don't buy a lot of long spaghetti.

Huy
@Stephie: does your rice fit in one of those KORKEN jars or do you use something different for it?

@Stephie how is the flooding in your place?
The Neckar is in bad shape today, but the city isn't really damaged

Huy
how do I call a label maker in German?

the people are very annoyed though, because a major street was closed

@Huy I used to have it in Korken (and probably will again), but currently rice and semolina are in Tupperware. I have them on a very high shelf and I din't want to shatter them.

5:47 PM
I don't think I have ever seen the Neckar weirs up before, river freely flowing
it had at least 10 km/h today (typically it has 0.5)

Huy
I need a big and light container, probably just going to buy some Tupperware
for the rice

and the meadow alongside is turned into a weird lake, with a playground sticking out of it

@rumtscho pretty harmless. Granted, the river is high and all the meadows flodded, but nothing threatening the towns afaik.

but I heard other places had it much, much worse
ah well, the Nagold has a pretty low bed anyway, and it is mostly flowing through wilderness
and the new weirs are of course made to take up floods over the usually dry crowns
This is the Neckar at Heidelberg
the second mark on the right is the highwater mark

Calw had a few major floods I remember (including being partially cut off) and once even the vault in the bank flooded. They just managed to get the cars out. Since then, major restructuring has prevented serious floods.

5:55 PM
@Huy I hope you didn't think I'm suggesting that there is something wrong with your mineral oil quesiton
if it had counted as a duplicate, I would have closed

Huy
@rumtscho: no, not at all, but that post indeed helped out a lot, enough for me

OK, glad the matter is settled

Huy
@rumtscho: they actually didn't have any mineral oil in the drugstores I checked
I decided to just go with flaxseed instead

Yes, that's again one of those American things

Huy
yeah, the woman at the counter probably has never had anyone ask for mineral oil before

6:05 PM
ui, it seems I have only biked through the luckier part of town
The second one is a weir
normally, there is space between the bridge and the water
and below it, there is a wall holding back the water

@Huy Well, you could have gotten it at IKEA... ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/00046786

eh, I am happy enough with linseed oil, and my mother didn't oil at all
it is just a thing people do, but really a bit too much of a detail to get hung upon

Huy
@Stephie: not in Switzerland: ikea.com/ch/de/search/?query=skydd
(no idea why)

Weird.

also @Stephie finger weg von der IKEA Seite, sonst gehst du morgen da "eine Kleinigkeit holen" und kommst zur[ck mit einem Wagen voll Zeug plus zwei neue Schränke

Huy
6:11 PM
^

@rumtscho ich weiß...

Huy
she's already scheduling an IKEA visit

hahahaha
before I have read it through
the automated ad linker really had to find the word Lust there, and look where the link goes to

Huy
any of you guys know how to call a label maker in German? :(

6:13 PM
Dymo?
Etikettendrucker?

Huy
Etikettierer

Idontspeakgerman?

Huy
I didn't even remember the word Etikette

:P

Huy
thanks

6:15 PM
@Huy those are the large ones.

Huy
yeah, and quite expensive
I expected them to be like 15-30
hm

No, Etikettierer are the machines that put labels on mass mailings.

Huy
oh?

Huy
does anyone use those to label stuff at home or am just I so crazy
(and want to do it)

6:18 PM
The guy from Getting things done uses them

@Huy I bough the dymo from the last ALDI offer - and returned it because it didn't work. Have it on my wishlist (prio B) for years.
But I am someone who labels stuff. For some of my jars I used blackboard stickers and chalk pens.

Huy
I have a wishlist too
lots of stuff :(

And "pretty" permanent stickers for others.

I know the one we have at work is pretty expensive... and the label tape is even worse.
It's made by a company called "Brother".

That's the nice bit about glass jars (besides not having to worry about chemicals): you get all stickers off easily and in a pinch I use permanent marker.

6:23 PM
We use painter's tape and write on that. :D I even have the weight of the empty jar stuck on the bottom so that I can weigh how much I have left so I know if I need more before I start a recipe.

Huy
yeah I usually just use tape and write on it

6:41 PM
Gah - minor two needs to lear a thing or two about cheating.
Minor 1 woke in the middle of the night (3am) during the break and decided to play with his Nintendo.
Now she wants to do that too. And asked for my permission!
Sorry girl, if you want go break the rules, go for it, but don't ask me first! (-‸ლ)
(And bear the consequences of getting caught.)
And I'm not closing my eyes on a school night.

Huy
what were the consequences for minor 1?

6:56 PM
I just got human verification even though I'm logged in?

@Huy he had a good excuse - he felt queasy and sick, so he distracted himself. And he told us right in the morning. Golden rule here: "Those who fess up get leniency." He was punished enough by feeling super-tired the next day yet did his chores without complaining.
(Which doesn't usually hapoen on a "normal" day! ^_^)

1 hour later…
Huy
8:26 PM
I see
I used to confess pretty quickly too, guilt would completely ruin my day otherwise
