12:00 AM
@Cerberus glad to hear it! I've always suspected that you understand programming a bit better than you think

On the other hand, a conscientious programmer would not write: Thisfunctionwritesanumber, Number_Variable1

but I have to go to bed now, 1 AM here. See you later everybody

@Sobachatina I have been playing a game...

Good night.

@Sobachatina it was great seeing you again! I'll be glad if you drop by every now and then.

12:00 AM
@rumtscho Hah, well, I understand the concepts once they are explained to me...
Sleep well!

@rumtscho Just for you.

Oh, yeah, welcome back, Soba!

Thanks! It's nice to see you guys.
I've been baking less and programming and exercising more so I haven't been around as much.

Wow, exercising? I think that goes against the philosophy of both Stack Exchange and Seasoned Advice.

Yep. It's pretty foreign to me as well but I like the repercussions.

12:07 AM
I praise thee.
What kind of exercise?
I should recommence running...

I had been enjoying road biking before it got cold.

I, too, blame the cold.

Luckily right about then my company finished the employee gym next door.
It's nice.
In the summer I want to start working towards longer bike rides- like 100 miles.
I'm not interested in getting to competitive speeds, I just like the scenery.

That's long!

The longest I've done so far in one go is about 40 miles.
It's not an impressive distance for avid cyclists- but it's a lot for me.

12:12 AM
I don't think I've ever cycled that far!

It makes your hands and seat sore. Padded gloves and shorts are nice.

I've never had a problem with the seat but I really need the gloves.

I have clipless pedals. Falling down at a crowded intersection in the rain is good for building humility.

12:33 AM
Good evening!
Another cyclist! Hello, @Sobachatina

8 hours later…
8:27 AM
Morning all

8:44 AM
Morning Tall!
(ok sooooo lame, but I couldn't resist)

8:55 AM
Hihi, English learner's blooper of the day:
Hubby and son discuss "bad" with reference to "Batman". (focus on the 'd')
Q from Hubby: How do you spell "Batman"?
A: With a 'TH'!
With a rubber ducky....

9:16 AM
bathman?

Not what he meant, but what he spelled ;-)

I always like the thing in Friends, not sure if you've seen it English or how well it translated

Never seen it, only an episode or two in German.

Phoebe pronounces Spiderman not as Spider-man, but Spiderman (spiderm'n). Chandler repllies "It's not like, Phil Spiderman!"
"He's a spider... man!"
a few new shots of the magical Welsh valley in my flickr stream, btw

<sigh> beautiful!

9:37 AM
it is. I need to go back
it's a hanging valley, and for 8 months of the year the golden hour sun is behind the mountains. Around April it eventually makes its way round to shine up the valley. That will be my cue.

Put the date on your calendar, right?

let me consult the oracle
Midsummer will be bang on
of course, it will also be stupid o'clock for sunrise... 4:49 >.<

Sorry, what did I miss?
brb.

9:58 AM
@Stephie you didn't miss anything, I just uploaded the wrong screencap :)

10:56 AM
quiet this morning...

user116848
Hi Elendil et al!

it's just me, there ain't no al

user116848
There is Stephie, Faheem, Elmer... list goes on.

user116848
:)

user116848
I was getting better but then ate something oily now feel like shit again.

user116848
11:01 AM
Stupid sore throat.

user116848
How are you?

yeah, but they're not here
same as always, grumpy but with a thin veneer of charming amiability

user116848
Yep you keep things here very friendly :-)

user116848
Not always though.

user116848
;-)

user116848
11:03 AM
Hi @Stephie.

sometimes people scratch my veneer

Hi guys - I'm back. Sort of.
Reviewing software architecture and evaluating vacuum cleaners on the side.
Multitasking extreme ;-)

did hubby's CPL come yet?

Should arrive today.
So everything set for Sunday.

Sunday?

11:38 AM
Morning all.

user116848
Morning Cindy!

hey sweetheart

@ElendilTheTall Sunday is the day of the Valentine. ;)

@cindy I know, but stephie said it with special significance

@ElendilTheTall Oh, didn't catch it.
It's going to be a very long day. And I'm starting out tired. I have 200 miles of driving ahead of me.

user116848
11:45 AM
Wow, that's a lot of miles.

user116848
Good luck.

@ElendilTheTall the outing to the tower?

user116848
@Cindy You will be crossing states I'm guessing?

user116848
*a state

@Arrowfar No, will still be in VA.

11:50 AM
@Cindy any news from your "manager from hell"?

@Stephie oh, I didn't realise that was sunday

Well, this is Germany. People can't go shopping on Sundays, so...

@Stephie She's still being a pain. Our manager told her to stay out of my business but she won't stop causing problems.

@Cindy oh, so she got a warning? Good!

Hi everybody

user116848
11:54 AM
Hi!

Hi @rumtscho!

@rumtscho Hello.

@rumtscho hey hon
@Stephie ah yes, the good old middle ages

@Cindy sorry to hear about the meddler continuing. But with the attention of higherups, it can't continue forever.

@ElendilTheTall and all those rumours about the Brits being traditionalists. So not true in this case ^_^

11:57 AM
@rumtscho One would hope.

@Stephie not if it means not being able to buy a pint of damn milk on a Sunday
@Cindy keep a log of everything she does

I used to hate the "stores closed on Sunday" thing, but like it now
it helps oneself get some distance from chores

@ElendilTheTall I am, and our manager is aware. It's just adds a lot of unnecessary stress.

and you don't starve if you wake up on Sunday and find the fridge empty

@rumtscho I grew up with it, still hate it.

12:00 PM
retail is closed, but restaurants, snack places and even the small expensive food markets at gas stations and train stations work
@Stephie I grew up without it, and I'm OK with it

@rumtscho I am assuming this would still be off-topic for Seasoned Advice, but is there any possibility you're interested in migration?

Q: Does anybody know how to choose a juicer?

Alex RoyI'm looking for a juicer. To be honest, cooking is not my hobby and I hate cooking! As I understood, this appliance will save my time o kitchen. Can you, please, recommend where I can find some useful information and can choose the best one for me? Thank you in advance for help!

If it weren't so, I'd waste Sundays on tedious trips to Ikea or something similarly stupid

user116848
@Cindy Cindy can you tell your manager to follow the "Be nice" policy? lol.

user116848
Just joking ;)

@Erica it won't work as-is, but I think it can be reworded
it would have to become "advice for choosing a juicer", not "where to read about juicers"
and we'll have to see if it isn't a duplicate already
also, the OP will have to provide more info. I mean, why "save time"? Compared to what, crushing apples in her bare hands?

12:03 PM
XD
@rumtscho HULK SMASH APPLES, HULK DRINK JUICE
Probable duplicates that I see already:
4
Q: Do I need a juicer?

XodarapA lot of the juicers I see are really expensive, which makes me wonder if they have any significant benefit over my current food processor. I found a few articles (e.g. this one) which seem like they're saying that there's no huge difference between the two. Do juicers just exist for people who ...

5
Q: How do I start juicing?

James SlagelA recent question tipped me off about juicers. I have heard of them before, but I had always written them off as TV informercial gadgets that were not really useful. Is this true? If I had and orange, a tangerine, and a grapefruit, could I just put them in a juicer and have my own fruit "cocktai...

@Arrowfar Really. ;) Just to be clear, this evil manager is not my manager. She is a peer in the same position I am. She was assigned to help me because the district I got used to be partly hers.

yes, I would suggest that the OP reads some of our questions, also this
1
Q: Blender vs food processor vs juicer

CeleritasWhen should a blender be used instead of a food processor or instead of a juicer? I'm planning on investing in one of them. I would use if for making smoothies and beverages. I've got a Magic Bullet which I put frozen berries in, but find the consistency is too thick to drink.

and if after that, she knows what she wants to use the juicer for, it is probably best to ask how to choose a juicer for exactly that application - the existing questions make it clear that there is no "one size fits all"
if after reading she doesn't know what she plans to do with the juicer, and hates experimenting in the kitchen, she's probably better off without a juicer anyway

Great. I won't migrate, I'll provide links to those three, and suggest that she ask on Seasoned Advice with anything further. (How she ended up on Parenting, I honestly can't even guess!) Thanks! :)

Sounds like a good plan

I must go. Still sick and very tired. If I don't get things going I won't get everything done, especially with the drive time. Catch you guys a little later. :)

user116848
12:18 PM
See you later!

@Cindy cya hon, keep on keeping on

@Cindy have a good day! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

So, how are we all?

user116848
We are very quiet it seems.

amazed at these people's speed
I already got an interview invitation - for Tuesday
I'm looking at online shops which will be able to deliver a blazer in a long size quickly enouogh

12:30 PM
Yay, well done
The best cheekbones east of my wife did the trick! ;)
Erm, also the fact that they have to give you an interview :D

Wow! That was quick!

user116848
@ElendilTheTall There we go, our one and only Frying Pan charmer: Mr Dilly! :-)

Can't you do "classic" shopping in HD? I know, the arm length and all that, but still trying it on sounds essential?

classic shopping is really out of question for me
I'm not just tall, my arm length is much longer than that of a woman my height
everything in the shop is at least 10 cm too short in the sleeve

user116848
@Stephie What was quick? Stephie you seem to be saying non sequiturs lately ;-)

12:38 PM
I could take a look whether Galeria Kaufhof has something in long sizes, but it's rare.
Also, I'm certain I won't find a well sitting blazer in any shop online or offline, at least not in Germany - my proportions are too far off a German size table, I am 36 in the waist and 40 and more in the shoulders.
So everything I get will be just passable, not good.
With a blazer bought online, I can take out my old one (which is quite small, sadly), see which one is the lesser evil, and return the new one if it looks worse. And use the old one for the interview.

user116848
@Stephie Oh sorry, you meant the interview. My bad, didn't see the context.

@Arrowfar ^_^

user116848
Oh this is nothing. I have had many embarrassing moments in chats :-)

@rumtscho have you ever considered a tailor? Especially if you're "outside the norm"?
Need not be expensive, iirc.

@Stephie never had the money for one in Germany, or the time to find and work with one from outside
I've tried making my own clothes, but I'm not good enough at sewing. Certainly not for a blazer. And don't have the time.

12:49 PM
I had my bridal dress made somewhere in Eastern Europe - at a fraction of the cost of an off-the-rack model in Germany.
Might want to consider that for future buys.

If you have ideas how to find an affordable tailor - not Änderungsschneider - I'm open
I've asked around in Bulgaria, they say the process takes over a month
I can't stay there for a month

@rumtscho, will get back to you on that subject another time... Bye!

bye!

@rumtscho I don't think they need you to wait around for a month....
all they need is your measurements
the other option is of course - don't wear a blazer
wear a dress, a 'business' dress

They don't just need my measurements, they need to fit

1:02 PM
so wear a dress

the measurements are not sufficient, really. I need other changes.
I don't have a business dress, I can't find one that fits for the same reasons I can't find a blazer that fits, and it is a very unusual look in my industry, certainly not one for an interview.
Blazer it is. The old badly fitting one or a new slightly better fitting one.
Note that I've gotten all my jobs in the old badly fitting one, so it's not a major tragedy

ok, no dress
well, what about buying an off the peg blazer a size or two too big and having it altered?
I have done that with suits numerous times (i too have long arms and broad shoulders)

Haven't considered that. Might be the way to go for later interviews.
I also have sloping shoulders and spiraled arms, I don't know if they can alter it for that too. But even if it's only the waist, that will be a win.
I like that one
although the color may not be the best choice for an interview

good grief, you're not painting yourself in a good light :)
that's a nice suit
jesus, do they really care about the colour of your blazer?
"She's perfect for the job, but my god, that blazer!"
It was dark burgundy!
what a wanton anarchist!

I've spent the last years reading a lot about the cognitive and affective aspects of preferences building and decision making
they won't be stopped by blazer color in the rational part of decision making

1:13 PM
Translation: "I spend a lot of time overthinking things"

"and writing a dissertation on that"

If they don't hire you on the basis of blazer colour, rationally or not, you're better off not working for them

anyway, attitude is more important than rational arguments in any but the most trivial choices
and when it comes to humans, it is very dependent on appearance
@ElendilTheTall they cannot choose to not take my blazer color into account during their decision making

If you walked into an interview I was giving with that suit on, I would think nothing other than you were smartly and appropriately dressed

because it is taken into account by the nonconscious parts of decision making

1:16 PM
it's dark, it's conservatively cut

yes, the difference between that one and a blue or black one is probably small in the end

just accentuate dem cheekbones with makeup and they won't look past your face ;)
hypno-bones

@rumtscho If the colour suits you, I see absolutely no problem with it.
Better than a "standard" black if it makes you look washed-out!

1:31 PM
Hi guys

Hi @Jolenealaska!

I'm just popping in. I woke up with a bit of an achy tummy. For some reason it seems to want milk.

hi @Jolenealaska! I hope the milk will help.

Me too. It's not bad, just interfering with sleep.
@rumtscho So who is the interview with?

user116848
Yo Jojo!

1:40 PM
Hi @Arrowfar

@Jolenealaska hello trouble!
erm, I mean, your Modship

user116848
I just read something depressing on wikipedia.

user116848
Which was not new to me but still.

@ElendilTheTall <eye roll> Hi hon

user116848
Yes Jojo is blue now, cool!

1:45 PM
@Arrowfar what's so depressing on Wikipedia?

The milk seems to be helping, so I am going to try to catch a few more winks. Either way, I'll be back in a bit. CYA!

user116848
@Jolenealaska So now you are an ex NSA agent and a moderator, does it get more exciting than that? ;-)

@Jolenealaska :D

user116848
@rumtscho Child Labour in Pakistan.

@jolenealaska it's going to be at least 3 years before I get over it

user116848
1:47 PM
> In December 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor's List of Goods Produced by Child Labor or Forced Labor reported 9 goods of which 6 are produced by child laborers in Pakistan. These include the making of bricks, carpets, glass bangles, leather and surgical instruments, as well as coal mining.

coal mining!

@arrowfar don't look into Nestle if that depresses you

user116848
@ElendilTheTall Oh I just read about that. Didn't know. Depressing.

the world is a sucky place

user116848
Yes it is.

user116848
2:01 PM
I hate my country sometimes.

user116848
2:12 PM
Sorry, didn't mean to ruin the mood.

user116848
:-)

3:00 PM
Hello!
Congrats @Jolenealaska :)
Also well played @Catija :)

3:14 PM
Good morning!

hi @ElmerCat :)

3:38 PM
Aaaaargh! Anyone bought a vacuum cleaner lately?
I'm reading product reviews and aparently those who bought product A claim it's worse that product B and they are exchanging it. And vice versa.

haha :D

wooo, one of my photos got Explored on Flickr
next stop Photographer of the Year

/me coughs

/me offers Mien a glass of water

3:56 PM
/me thanks Elendil and pours it over his head

/me shakes it off, shakes it off

:D
nice moves

I am deceptively graceful

@Stephie I once worked as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.

4:07 PM
@Stephie Canister or upright?

what is "explore"?

@ElendilTheTall Spectacular!

@ElmerCat ???
@ElendilTheTall Ah! Another step towards fame... And one day I can say I was given an original cintramontane. By the artist himself.<fans herself>

@Mien It's like a 'Best of Flickr'
per day

@Stephie Are you seeking a canister or upright style vacuum cleaner?

4:13 PM
@ElmerCat Sorry, had to google for pictures... Canister.

Oi, I want an original Cintramontane too!

@ElmerCat note that English isn't my first language. Sometimes I have to ask seemingly "obvious" things.

if it is any consolation Stephie, I had no idea as well :D

Canister

yeah yeah
I get it

4:17 PM
Upright

And "retro" ;-)

oh
those actually exist? :D

@Mien well, when you put it so politely....

never ever seen them :P
@ElendilTheTall You know me ;)
Mien = Dutch for "manners"

@Mien Vague memory of my Gran having an upright one. Looooooooong time ago.

4:19 PM
hmm I don't think I've met your Gran, so I can't confirm
;-)

When I was an Electrolux salesman, we would disparage Hoover upright vacuums by calling them a "bag on a stick".

heh :) anyway, time to go. TTYL!

Good bye, @Mien !

Bye, @Mien!

user116848
Bye Mien!

4:47 PM
aww people like my question I feel all fuzzy inside

@Jefromi of course we do! And FTR - my first batch also followed Willem's procedure...

2 hours later…
6:34 PM
My new wireless keyboard/mouse just arrived! I sure hope I have better luck with it than I have had with wireless keyboards before.

@Jolenealaska Good luck! Surely they're way better by now...

I'm trying to set up my living room so that I can use my computer at the desk with the monitor or from my couch or armchair with the TV. It has been a challenging thing to do on a tight budget. This keyboard is the final piece.

7:37 PM
Trying it right away?

Soon, I have to make a quick run to the store, so I am waiting until I get back. Reviews of this and other wireless keyboards on Amazon have given me hope.
Apparently, the delay I have experienced may be related to other drivers installed on my system.
Other users have gotten rid of the delay by nuking other drivers.
If I have any problems with that, I may wait for Tall. He'll most likely just take over my machine and do it for me.
I just edited my last message after two minutes! <big grin>

<lurch> You rang? </lurch>

Hi sweetie!
I have my new keyboard.

so i see

@Jolenealaska abuse of power already!!

7:51 PM
I figured that I would just mess with it now, but if it gives me any crap I'll ask you for help once you are settled in for the day.
I'll try to do it myself, but I won't get frustrated over it.
The ways of drivers are mysterious and arcane :)

yes indeed
'settled in for the day' has been and gone, btw
it's nearly 8pm

I mean your morning
like 13 hours from now.

the driver thing sounds rather likely to be voodoo (people just trying all kinds of things and then when it gets better, pinning it on something recent) but I suppose it's possible!

It was repeated often enough that I am hopeful.

so have you seen that I am virtually famous?

8:02 PM
I DID! I also didn't know explore, but I saw your response to Mien.
The photo is gorgeous.

thank you :D
4133 views since midday

nice

just refreshed - 4286
crazy

The comments I read were very glowing.
Aarrggh.
I bought AAA batteries for the keyboard. I also need 1 AA for the mouse.
I'm glad I checked before going to the store.

probably best to invest in rechargeables

8:11 PM
OK, I'm off to the store. Back in a bit.

take care

Jay
8:24 PM
@ElendilTheTall why are you famous?
Oh the pictures
Very nice work buddy
@Jolenealaska congrats on Mod. Your name is blue and everything now.
Have been preoccupied with work this week

8:48 PM
@Jay I didn't know this blue thing was a big deal!!

Jay
@Jefromi Its such a big deal.
Your name is like a whole different color!!!

9:42 PM

:)
I got back just in time to see that

@Jefromi That's not OK. Kermie is Green.

Funny thing about that. I have twice now looked at the "new message" in chat to only see that it was just my last message. I don't look like myself in blue.

@ElendilTheTall typing on behalf of hubby: Big compliments for your featured photo! Question: is that HDR or a "normal" shot?
And: If you keep posting photos of such brilliant quality, he will never show you one of his.

9:59 PM
I am powering down now to try out my new keyboard. I'm all aquiver. If it works without problems, it will make my home so much more comfy. Back in a bit!

Good luck!
