The pieces looks something like this imgur.com/RHl9eo7
They taste sweet nutty and very smooth

2 hours later…

3:09 AM
@FaheemMitha I'm fine thanks. Sorry for the late reply.

user116848
Karachi is same old, same old.

5:52 AM
@AnubianNoob How so? I only pick a few topics that pique my interest.

1 hour later…
6:57 AM
@Stephie I'll have to start choosing some flavours

7:45 AM
@ElendilTheTall I should have stayed silent... you'd never known ;-)
You rarely share your unlimited wisdom at ELL - that could have been your votes had you choosen to answer.
Why do you go by the oh-so nondescript user8543 at ELL and Raspberry Pie instead of your usual @ElendilTheTall? Trying to cultivate an alter-alter ego?

8:07 AM
@Stephie I forgot my login details for Elendil so created a new account. Then SE merged them, but the user names remained.

Mh. And I so hoped for a really weird story. Good morning, btw!

I rarely share my (very limited) wisdom at ELL because while I often know the answer, I often don't know enough of the technicalities to explain why it's correct.
@Stephie good morning :)

@ElendilTheTall You can change the user name.

Morning @FaheemMitha!

@Stephie hi

8:11 AM
@FaheemMitha that would involving caring about it in the first place

@ElendilTheTall Caring about what? Your user name?

@FaheemMitha, you never told us how your flat pizza turned out?

@FaheemMitha yes
Ah, small pleasures. An extra leg room seat on the train.
Ah, small pleasures. An extra leg room seat on the train.
@FaheemMitha yes

@Stephie It was Ok. That was yesterday's pizza. He got some fresh yeast, so today's pizza rose.
@ElendilTheTall Some sort of issue at your end? You're duplicating lines.

@FaheemMitha You (or your cook) are going for thin-crust or deep-dish or some nondescript middle ground?

8:15 AM
@Stephie I'm not sure. What are the criteria?

@FaheemMitha I will leave you to use Holmes like reasoning to work out the issue
@FaheemMitha deep dish is like a pie, cooked in a deep round tin

@FaheemMitha Thin crust: Stretch the dough as thin as it will go, thin topping, bake "in a flash" on a stone in a super hot oven.
Deep dish needs a baking tin, base is like 2cm before baking and it takes up to 30 mins in a medium-hottish oven. One or two slices are a meal.
Oh, look, I can duplicate too!
So, @FaheemMitha, which is it?

Tandoor pizza would be worth an experiment worth doing
@Stephie what's on the cards for today?

8:31 AM
@ElendilTheTall a) laundry (nice sunny day + 2 kids... go figure), b) shopping (food: empty fridge and 2 kids with plans for a pancake lunch), c) repair damages from kids making pancakes, d) more shopping with kids (back to school clothes) because we are e) picking up hubby at the train station in Stuttgart at some yet unknown time this evening.
Makes me exhausted just writing about it ;-)

Ha. I know those feels
Sometimes I consider moving house rather than tidying up after Hurricane Young'uns
Less work

@ElendilTheTall And your schedule?
Oh, the hurricane.... I know the feeling. Are yours old enough to have friends over?

Not really
The eldest does very occasionally

But to be honest, my two monkeys are basically good kids. And finally at an age where they can really help, not just the toddler help which requires giving them the feeling of being helpful while preventing major accidents or messes...

@Stephie work. Go home. Same as always.
@Stephie work. Go home. Same as always.

8:37 AM
Mrs Elendil taking care of the kids or are you going the childcare route?

@Stephie work. Go home. Same as always.
@Stephie a bit of both
There comes a point you just work to pay for the childcare you wouldn't need if you weren't working.

I know that kind of math too well - we decided that we could afford me staying home a bit longer, but then hubby has a quite well-paid job. I know we were (and are) lucky.

@Stephie Probably deep dish. At any rate, there is certainly a baking tin. Though I'm not sure if it is 2 cm.

9:00 AM
The "up to 30 mins in a medium-hottish oven. One or two slices are a meal." part also sounds correct.

@Stephie well, we get by. we could get by better but, ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@FaheemMitha that sounds more like your chef not quite knowing what he is aiming for rather than a concerted effort to make Chicago-style pizza :)
@rumtscho morning dearest

@ElendilTheTall He doesn't know anything about pizza. Nor do I, for that matter.
He's just following a recipe my mother showed him many years ago.

What kind of oven do you/he have?

@ElendilTheTall Gas.

just a standard gas oven?

9:07 AM
@ElendilTheTall I think so.

hello @ElendilTheTall, @FaheemMitha, @Stephie

Hi @rumtscho. How are you?

I'm well, thanks. Already back into work rhythm.
How are you? Surviving the summer well? Or does it make little difference at your lattitude?

@rumtscho I'm Ok. And yes, it's hot all the time here, pretty much. The rains have been deficient this year, which has not helped.

well, rumi comes in and the scintillating conversation stops

9:20 AM
<shakes head and mutters disapprovingly>

@ElendilTheTall I would have hoped that you erudite people will seamlessly ease into a topic you're not embarrassed to discuss in my presence

@rumtscho jeez, that doesn't leave much
;)
Let's talk religion or politics!
That always results in calm and rational discussion

But I do have a qestion: what is the thing with Brits and shorts?

@Stephie I don't know, what is the thing with Brits and shorts?
as in, what do you mean?

An observation. If the weather is cold, we all wear long pants and long sleeved garments.
If it gets warmer, we Germans keep the long pants but pick short sleeves while I've seen many Brits wear shorts with a long sleeved top. (sort of generalization, of course)
I've seem the same with US visitors, btw., and Prince George and his shorts raise quite a few eyebrows here...

9:28 AM
So you could just as well say: "What is it with Germans and long trousers in warm weather?"
Besides, Germans have lederhosen, those eyebrows can just go right back down

I know (but honestly, if it's 30C its shorts and t-shirts for all of us) Just a cultural quirk,no criticism.

I know :)

And I haven't seen a Lederhose in the wild for ages.

@Stephie she says, quickly changing out of her lederhose

@Stephie I actually find that it's the German style which is the unusual one
I remember taking my then-boyfriend on vacation to Bulgaria once. On the Black sea coast. 30+ Celsius. He only packed long trousers (he only had long trousers). Once there, he saw how many men are running around in shorts or at least bermudas, and promptly bought a pair.
But it's indeed somehow considered undignified
The "erster Vorstand" of my kayak club is a school principal in his day job
once somebody even higher in the hierarchy gave him "running around in shorts in the center of Mannheim" as an example of the kind of behavior that cannot be tolerated in a man of his position

9:43 AM
Well, I certainly wouldn't wear shorts in formal situations, but they're by no means undignified in casual ones

we were highly amused of course, because when we see him (around the boats or in the swimming pool) he's either wearing shorts or a neoprene onesie

And there are certainly different 'grades' of shorts in terms of smartness
You have your bermudas, which should be strictly limited to swimming pools or beaches
Your baggier combat-style shorts for casual wear

I didn't mean in business context (hello, aircondition!), and not at 30+ in your spare time, but somewhere these "middle grounds" between 15-22 C when you considering to get rid of some fabric. Is it sleeves-first or pant legs-first...?

Then your more fitted, cotton shorts for smarter occasions
@Stephie for me, sleeves. I normally only wear shorts when it's properly hot - 24+

And then there is this phenomenon which seems to be utterly American
I've once seen one guy wearing this style here in Europe
it was at a horse race. You know, the place where you see tons of middle aged women in silk dresses and impossible hats.

9:46 AM
Hmmm. I wouldn't wear shorts and a buttoned shirt I must say
Certainly not tucked in
I might wear an untucked linen summer shirt

That's what I'm talking about... @rumtscho, you got me.
I've seen plenty of college students in the UK (ok, jumper instead of bottoned shirt) - is it some subconcious remanant of their school uniform days?

It's probably more like "I prefer to wear shorts because they're comfortable and there isn't any mild social stigma around it like there is in Germany"

Perhaps conditioning - If I wear shorts / skirt + long sleeves I'm feeling "cooler" than in the t-shirt/ pants combo. <scratches head>

Maybe they just prefer the way it looks?

actually, the calves are the least cold sensitive part of the body

9:53 AM
Maybe it's easier to roll sleeves up if they want to cool themselves further than it is to roll trouser legs up

I honestly don't know... Ok, so I threw my idle subject in the ring, what's next? ^_^

for me, it's a misbehaving scanner and lunch in 5 minutes. So I'll be back to the conversation later.

@rumtscho sack him
@Stephie do you have any hobbies?

@ElendilTheTall, you first! @rumtscho, enjoy lunch!

9:58 AM
@Stephie you know mine already

And besides photography & cooking? You seem to be a man of many talents...?

@Stephie seem being the operative word
cooking isn't really a hobby per se, a man has to eat.
I used to do more baking but haven't done any for ages. Not much point now that me and Mrs the Tall are being stricter with our diets.
I tend to be quite 'faddy'. I will pick something up, be obsessed with it for a few weeks, then rarely do it again
I used to do origami
then I did paracord weaving

I can relate to the fads... But I have better self-restraint nowadays.

photography is the only thing I have stuck with, but it's also the only thing I am even remotely good at

So how long have you been photographing?

10:06 AM
about 7 years

Clearly not a fad then :-)

no
having spent several hundred pounds on equipment helps

What's on your current 'techniques I want to try' list?

I don't think I have one
I have covered pretty much all the bases in my time

Do you sell your photos?

10:09 AM
No

Don't want to, or?

Well, if someone wants to buy one I will sell it to them, but that has only happened once
And I just gave it to him anyway

So what do you do with them? Just 'have' them or do you print them, make books, hang them on the wall, ...

I print family ones for the wall, the landscapes etc I just 'have'
I have looked into selling some at arts/crafts fairs, but the initial outlay on stock is too much

My (inofficial) project with hubbys photos is to make a calendar for charity.

10:13 AM
that's a good idea
does he have any photos online?

Not yet. He's been 'taking pictures' for years, but only recently 'photographing'.

Hello all. How is everyone today?

I mean with all the works, .raw instead of .jpg, proper tagging, post-processing...
Hi @Cindy!

@Stephie I see
@Cindy hi
@Stephie does he have a particular genre he prefers?
I feel like I've asked you that already...

Landscape, nature, kids. As I said - what he finds when he goes outside.

10:22 AM
what camera does he use?
(I am legally allowed to ask this as a fellow photographer)
nothing worse than someone saying "Wow, nice photo! You must have a great camera!"

A nikkon 5300.

user116848
Hi guys!

The photo abobe is really, really cropped and downscaled .jpg - he's not really happy with it, too many artifacts and the focus could be better, but still.
Hi @Arrowfar!

@Arrowfar hi

Hi @Arrowfar.
I'm off for a bit. Have to get my notes together and review. 2nd interview later today! :)

10:27 AM
@Stephie birds in flight are very tricky
@Cindy yay! good luck, let us know how it goes!

user116848
@Cindy Good luck!

@ElendilTheTall Will do!
@Arrowfar Thanks!
You guys keep your fingers crossed for me.

@ElendilTheTall You are preaching to the choir... This pair was feeding their young and really nervous whenever we were close.
@Cindy Will do!!!

@Stephie the best tip I ever got for it was regarding exposure - use Manual mode, and meter off a well lit bit of ground below the bird. That way you avoid silhouetting. Focus is really a matter of how good the AF system is coupled with blind luck :)
Continuous mode is your friend, just fire away and increase your odds of a good capture

@ElendilTheTall That's what he does...

10:30 AM
Good :)
the other thing is to try and get as fast a shutter speed as you can, at least 1/500 for birds in motion
often tricky with longer lenses which tend to have smaller apertures, especially if you are stopping down for quality

He got himself the Sigma 70-200 / 2.8... Just because he wants to get as much light in there as possible.

I see. Still on the short side for birds though :D But once you get in the 300mm range, fast lenses start to get into "Ok, which organ can I do without?" territory

I know... And they get into the "where can I rent a sherpa" weight class ;-)

The 5300's sensor should be able to handle a fairly hefty ISO though. I don't know about hubby, but it took me a while to get out of the "no higher than 800" mindset I had from older cameras. Between the newer sensors and post-processing noise reduction, you can usually get away with at least 1600 and often up to 3200.

But these kestrels are nesting nearby, so you can actually sneak up on them. He's pondering one of these hunting tents though.

10:38 AM
Yes, they can be handy. You can also get simple camo screens rather than whole tents. A bit more mobile.

Mmmh, have to try that ISO / post processing thing. But we'll probably have to go for the tent because we need 360° coverage and there are nosy animals nearby.
We will probably just pitch it and leave it for a few days.

@Stephie if he uses manual exposure, then adjusts the ISO until he gets 1/1000, he should find it will give nice sharp results as far as motion blur goes
this was ISO 500 and 1/1000

Yeah, he saw that one. Made him want to roast our uncooperative kestrels on a spit ;-)

@Cindy back so soon?
@Stephie well, at the moment they will be at their least active, probably moulting
once Autumn comes around the young ones will start hunting
Spring is the best time, they will be at their least cautious while they concentrate on lurve

@ElendilTheTall it's frequently a very short time though

10:46 AM
@ElendilTheTall Year, we have the young literally everywhere - but not in a position to get a good shot.

@rumtscho yes

less than a week for some species

@rumtscho Hi! How was lunch?

@Stephie very interesting
they had "glazed radishes" as the only vegetable option

@rumtscho As in...?

10:48 AM
well, that and red sauerkraut, but I hate sauerkraut
I've never had cooked radishes before, only raw
they were surprisingly good

Sauerkraut or Rotkraut?

rotkraut
I only eat raw cabbage, I don't like it cooked

Brilliant. Sort of an obvious choice for August. <shakes head>

well, they had some kind of Braten, so this was the obvious complement

10:50 AM
Cat: This is it. I've died and gone to heaven.

I like it when they have a Braten, or any kind of slow-cooked meat. It's something I like, but rarely make at home.

@ElendilTheTall Wait until it tries the wasabi. From Heaven to Hell in .0001s!

the photo actually makes me mildly nauseated
<gag>

@ElendilTheTall why, are you a no-sushi eater?

We appreciate your self-sacrificing attitude. <slight bow>

10:52 AM
@rumtscho oh come, surely I don't have to reiterate Elendil's First Law to you of all people?

@ElendilTheTall I have to be sarcastic, or I'll lose my credibility as a British?

@rumtscho firstly 'a British' just sounds wrong. Secondly, I am deeply saddened that you, perhaps my first conversant here, is still unaware of EFL
(by which I mean Elendil's First Law, not Equivalent Focal Length)

Well, you can correct the situation, or continue being sad. Your choice.

Heck, even @Stephie probably knows it and she is a relative neophyte
Never eat anything with less than 2 legs or more than 4
(this naturally only applies to animal products)

flippers and flukes don't count?

10:58 AM
?

11:08 AM
when you say "legs", you mean "legs" and not "appendages homomorphic to legs"?

I wouldn't eat whale or dolphin, put it that way

but you would eat alligator?

I'd try it

If you'd try alligator, what's keeping you from snakes?

But I should point out that absolutely not eating two sets does not mean that I will automatically eat anything from the remaining sets
I would take each food on a case by case basis :)
But if you want a simplified, Reader's Digest interpretation of EFL, basically I fucking loath seafood

11:13 AM
seafood can be tricky

@rumtscho Define 'tricky'?

It's a common dislike for some and the greatest thing ever for others

mrs the tall loves it

Ok, I'm off to feed the minors. See you around!

@Stephie cya

1 hour later…
12:30 PM
@Stephie are you back?
minors suitably sated?

Jay
12:46 PM
morning

hey jay

Jay
how are you this lovely morning
morning @Stephie

It is, thankfully, afternoon here

Jay
yesterday after work i took a nap that lasted until my bedtime
so i stayed up until like 3am ><
i feel all out of sort right now

eek
I bet
I always feel horrible anyway when I nap

12:48 PM
@ElendilTheTall - sort of back. Almost ready to leave, coaching the (freshly scrubbed) minors' writing lessons.

Jay
normally a 1hr nap is great. but this time i wasnt able to wake up

summer holiday writing lessons? treat!

And no, I'm not a Tiger Mom.

Jay
@Stephie but summer is almost over. you leave them alone :'(
@Stephie Isn't Tiger Mom a term normally coined for strict Asian mothers? Do nonAsians use that term also?

I've never heard of it in any context

Jay
12:51 PM
@ElendilTheTall basically imagine a asian mother scolding her son for getting a A- for one of his grades. and you get the quintessential image of a Tiger Mom
Usually followed by guilt trip and future scenarios in which that A- will lead to homelessness and death

well, yes, I get the general idea, I'd just never heard to it referred that way
It's a bit like the High Expectations Asian Father meme

Jay
@ElendilTheTall haha great reinterpretation.

have you seen Jiro Dreams of Sushi?

Jay
no. idk what that is

Actually, I'm doing them a favour - the elder will start secondary school and while he's extremely bright his handwriting is abysmal and his speed slow, so it's simply an attempt at getting him a better chance of competing with his new clasmates.

12:56 PM
@Jay it's a documentary about the best sushi restaurant in the the world
the owner, Jiro, is a complete perfectionist
his son basically can never be good enough
worth a watch

Jay
@Stephie Yes that exactly what a Tiger Mom would say.
@ElendilTheTall stabbing pains in my heart

@Jay the term has come up - it's expanding from Asian to non-Asian moms somewhat. We have many of these (what I call) "lifestyle kids".

Jay
@Stephie haha i think its fine as long as you also reinforce that you love them unconditionally.

And no, we debated whether we'd do this or not. We even discussed this with his past and some future teachers.

Jay
@Stephie Suicide rates for students suicides in asian countries are much much higher than in the west because of "tiger moms"
as long as you show them that even though you have high hopes for them and push them, them failing is not grounds for you not to love them anymore

1:01 PM
Our son is a bit of a special case, though. He skipped a class and is gifted (as in "tested by professionals", not as in "I think so").

Jay
@Stephie ah I hope he is relatively big for his age. Kids can be pretty cruel sometimes. I remember in grade school there was a kid who skipped a grade and was super tiny. And he was made fun of.
Im sorry lol i dont know why im bringing up worst case scenarios

@Jay Lol. Don't go into diplomacy eh? "We beat him to death with his own shoes."

Jay
@ElendilTheTall My face is too expressive for such line of work
im a pretty straightforward type of guy

@Jay, don't worry, we've thinking about worst case scenarios with this child for years.

@Jay ha, that's funny

Jay
1:10 PM
@ElendilTheTall would you like to dispute that? lol
have you known me to beat around the bush?
both literally and figuratively?

@Jay no, i mean, straight etc
the straight part of straightforward. it just tickled me. ignore me. I'm hysterical with boredom

@Jay and yes, he is tall. Was the tallest boy in his class. Good at sports too.

Jay
@ElendilTheTall I'm pretty gayforward type of guy just doesnt have the same ring

@Stephie God or good?
:)

Jay
@Stephie Smart, tall and athletic? Man i hate him already.

1:13 PM
@ElendilTheTall <rolls eyes>

Jay
haha jk

I AM SPORTNOS, LORD OF SPORTS
SACRIFICE YOUR BALLS TO ME

Jay
@ElendilTheTall oh god dont go there lol

that one was just for you :D

Jay
@ElendilTheTall every time anyone mentions or infers castration, i get super uncomfortable down there

1:14 PM
^ agreed

HAHA

In Soviet Russia table flips you! ノ┬─┬ノ ︵ ( \o°o)\
soooo
what are the plans for the weekend?
it's a Bank Holiday here so we all get Monday off

Lucky you

@AnubianNoob should've thought of that before you rebelled

Saturday: finish the app for another company here
Sunday: Stay up all night building a program for Hearthstone streamers

Jay
1:27 PM
@ElendilTheTall what is a bank holiday

In between: Finish SE chat app MVP but that'll probably leak into the week

Jay
@AnubianNoob stop giving away stars like fortunate cookies at a chinese restaurant

And get my roguelike engine up and running

Jay
Im going to see my family this weekend
i didnt go home last weekend during my birthday so im going home this weekend.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!

Jay
1:29 PM
and ill be able to pick up my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone my sister got me for my birthday
its good to have a sister who makes a lot of money :D

@Jay like Labour Day or Columbus Day
@AnubianNoob you're making a SE chat app?
does the API allow that now?

Yes I am, no it doesn't

so you have to do some jiggery-pokery

Exactly
That's a really bad time to take a screenshot haha

Jay
@ElendilTheTall oh so basically an European only holiday?

1:39 PM
@Jay no, a UK only holiday
there is no European only holiday

Jay
oh ok

even if there was, it would be a toss up as to whether we'd follow it
we Brits are reluctant Europeans
@AnubianNoob will you have notifications for mentions?

@ElendilTheTall I will

Jay
1:54 PM
I think im going to plan a weekend getaway soon. rent a cabin in the moutains with some friends
really need a change of environemt
(i might be going through a quarter life crisis)

yes, your spelling is getting worse by the hour

Jay
one of my friends and i were just talking about how adult work life is just like high school

@Jay well, I certainly hate them both

Jay
i feel like my life isnt progressing the way i want to
Im hoping a weekend away will break this negative pall

@Jay that's true of the vast majority of people I would think

Jay
1:56 PM
@ElendilTheTall doesn't make it any less depressing :/
this cabin looks pretty cozy and cute
with a nearby lake and kayak and stuff
and relatively cheap with like 4-5 people
