5:52 AM
Morning all
> "It is said, Percy, that the civilized man seeks out good and intelligent company so that, through learnéd discourse, he may rise above the savage and closer to God. Personally, however, I like to start the day with a total dickhead to remind me I'm best."

1 hour later…
7:21 AM
Tum tee tum

@ElendilTheTall just a quick "good morning" to you so that you don't feel too alone ;-)

@Stephie morning.

7:59 AM
What was the highlight of your day (so far)?

@Stephie there has yet to be one

@ElendilTheTall Not even a tiny one? Try harder...

@Stephie Nope

@ElendilTheTall Should I go and find a cute kitten pic from the WWW?

knock yourself out

8:16 AM
Threw in a doggy too, just in case you are more of a dog person.

i'm not
they are too enthusiastic

Feeling grouchy, are we?

almost always :)

Oh, look, a silver lining: I got a :)

you lucky devil, you
so, what are you up to? are the neighbour's kids back yet?

8:21 AM
Nah, not yet... probably tomorrow or so, they can be a bit spontaneous.

how very un-German

She's Dutch ;-)

ah, that explains it
literally unGerman

But he's not only German, but Swabian. That can mean grumpyness as an art form!

ah. my wife has/had a Swabian penfriend
she was nice, but she was the archetypal humourless German
you couldn't make a sarcastic remark (and as you know 95% of my remarks are sarcastic) without it being picked apart. "No, zis is not the case, because..."

8:24 AM
Sometimes it's just another kind of humor - British humor doesn't go down well with many Germans.
Oh, I see.

what kind of humour does go down well with Germans?

Problem is, if you only speak the language but don't speak "culture". I stick my foot in my mouth often enough.
Mh, let me think. Actually hard to say as I'm "thinking" in English atm.
Morning, @Jolenealaska! Or rather 'night!

@Jolenealaska hi jojo

12:26 am
I will be 48 tomorrow.

I hear 48 is the new 30
...

8:28 AM
As it turns out...

@ElendilTheTall keep this up and she will start to act her age - and get acne again!

hold on, I need to call Dragon...

@Stephie no fear of that, believe me

There is a Dragon amongst us.
I finally got the last little detail for my book.
It will now write itself:)

@Jolenealaska Book?
Speaking of details...

8:35 AM
yes, @Stephie, I'm writing a book.

... yeees....???
Don't make me comb through hundreds of pages of chat log....

It's actually pretty old news for this chat, but I have been working on an autobiography.
I've never really thought of my life as colorful, after all it's the only life I've ever had (as far as I know), but I have been convinced that I do have a story to tell.
Just the last few days when I haven't actually had time to work on it, the final detail came to me.
I am going to put it together as a diary, starting on my birthday.

Ah, cool! Which means it's a good thing that you'll be 48 <nudges @ElendilTheTall>. I think those teen celebrity "autobiographies" written by mass-producing ghost writers are so ridiculous...

I didn't say it was a bad thing
Jojo knows my opinion of older women (¬‿¬)

there is no ghostwriter here, but I do have a perfectly pedantic editor in mind.

8:42 AM
@Jolenealaska Faheem is a busy guy

@Jolenealaska Oh, good editors are priceless! So when will be able to buy it? And will you self-publish or do have/search for a publisher?

life is too short for that, I'm self-publishing through Amazon.
a very nice thing about that, is that I can include videos and links to other works.

@Jolenealaska Let us know if you need reviewers ;-)
(admittedly biased, but hey, five stars are five stars)

I also have a marketing plan that may pay for a US tour during the winter. My goal is to have it done by Thanksgiving. I've already talked to a few people at the MS Society, and it is not outside the realm of possibility that individual chapters of the MS Society will each pay for a leg of the trip.
I'd actually rather be home for Thanksgiving than Christmas.
Christmas in the Brown household is full of way too much drama.
But if I can't squeeze in all the stories by then, I'll just keep writing until all the stories are told.

8:51 AM
The Jolene Brown Story - Vol. IV: January - April '96

Thanksgiving? Tough...

not really, I've been telling these stories for damn near 48 years.

@Jolenealaska and that's just in here

You know how Anne Frank called her diary Kitty?

Admittedly, no.

8:53 AM
mine is named too

when I speak (the best way for me to type), I speak to Dragon.

Tall, Tall, Tall
damn

My Dragon has big hair and walks with a limp
speaking of hair, I just got mine cut. I took off 6 inches.

length or volume?

8:56 AM
a little of each!
I am now officially shoulder length.

Oh, the visit, right... How did it go?

Remember that I was working on gumbo for 50?

Mhm, I'm struggling to grow mine.
Absolutely. That's for Sat., right?

Marv got a little petulant that I had very little time for him.
So I introduced him to the concept of a quickie.

And was he a quick learner?

8:58 AM
Good grief, who hasn't had a quickie by middle age?

Not really.
Marv

Stupid question. Marv.
lol

I think it takes them a half an hour to get out the sheet with the hole in it.

Marv will soon enter legend, you realise.

which brings up the second point...

8:59 AM
'Pulling a Marv' - the act of being sexually ignorant or incompetent, or both
'Dude, I was so drunk, I totally pulled a Marv'

But very eager to learn:)
I think I'm going to use a pseudonym.
There are a few people that I don't want to read the book.
Even though they are in it

Marv, for example?

Mrs. Marv

that would be one, but more especially, his wife
the other one that comes to mind is CN.
He doesn't know that I never liked him.

Good grief, married, never had a quickie and adulterous? Gee, are men that scarce in Alaska?

9:02 AM
@Stephie he flies in

you're just going to have to read the book!
the thing with Marv has been going on for over 10 years.

@ElendilTheTall Even if he does...
So name the three most important points in his favour?

Rumi had a point about changing the character of Marv too much.
So I'm not going to.
I'm changing the name of Chickaloon, my name, the name of the Lodge and the place where Marv goes after he swings through Anchorage.

@Stephie Pulse, full set of limbs, willingness to learn
:D
ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

I am including several recipes and a lot of cooking tips especially for people who are facing new disabilities.

9:07 AM
@ElendilTheTall except for the last one, that's not too unique. But who am I to judge? My love life has been monogamous for literally two decades. To each his own, right?

My kitchen is perfectly laid out to do cooking videos as well (a la ATK)

What's 'ATK'? My google search returns the German equivalent of "anti-terror martial arts". I have a hunch that that's not it...?

@Stephie America's Test Kitchen
but funnily enough, Jojo is also a highly trained ninja
she can kill you with a sous-vide machine
very slowly and gently

Good point - never mess with a cook. They can handle a knife and various other dangerous tools. And if all fails, they can still poison you ;-)

I met somebody today who's birthday is the day after mine. She also told me that she's deadly at Scrabble. :)
she said she'd come to my birthday party if I come to hers

9:13 AM
Speaking of knife skills, I have to go and train my minors - there is chili con carne and apple crumble on the menu and the gramps are comming over in two hours.

@Stephie I sharpened my Global yesterday. I just have to wave it in the general direction of food now and it falls apart for me

@Jolenealaska awww. will you have party bags?
filled with miniature liquors...

just party gumbo!

@ElendilTheTall Oh, so the hard stare lost his edge?

9:14 AM
and lots of it

oh, @Stephie
how'd you like that action
Guaranteed to cause shock and awe on the strasse of Germany
strassen?
you get it

No, we are too polite... but the shoes are borderline - and it's 'Straßen'.

@Stephie ah... I apologise
I have no idea how to do the double S/B thingamajig

In a pinch, write 'ss'.

I... did

9:19 AM
True. But I have the 'ß' quite handy here on my keyboard, so no excuse for me. You are permitted to write 'ae' for 'ä' etc.

I planted four of my very well-traveled seeds. All four have turned into little plants! :)
I also dropped one. Dammit.
Can't find it anywhere.

Ok, tests confirmed: Gravity still works in Alaska. Check.
@Jolenealaska How do you lose a plant? How tiny is it?

So do carpets :(

@Jolenealaska I can see the headlines now - "ALASKA SUPERMARKET GROWS OWN WEED - POLICE RAZE IT TO GROUND"

I didn't lose the plant, I lost the seed

9:21 AM
@Stephie sorry, lose
loose/lose is a pet peeve of mine

@ElendilTheTall <hangs head> You know I can't type.

I know, I know
you know (now) I can't resist calling out incorrect loses

Consider it a keyboard based form of dyslexia ;-)

we all have our crosses to bear
@Stephie dyslexics of the world, UNTIE!

@ElendilTheTall <waves white flag in vaguely northwesten direction>

9:25 AM
ahem... northwestern
:P
Again, another perfect joke set up
which I will diplomatically leave alone

If you find another typo, feel free to keep it ;-)

@Stephie I'd soon run out of room in your case :P

Okay Tall, question for you. I really love my headsets, and I have grown accustomed to Bluetooth.

ok
(nice to have you back by the way)

I want to find an ergonomic Bluetooth keyboard, but can't.
Crap
All of the Bluetooth keyboards are tiny.
they are made for mobile use.
However, I only intend to use it at home. The Microsoft wireless keyboard has a sucky range.

9:32 AM
so you want an ergonomic (as in split keyboard?) wireless keyboard with what kind of range?

I am very meticulously organizing as I unpack...
@ElendilTheTall probably split, at least big.
I can't stand the delay that "regular" wireless keyboards have (I've tried 3 or 4)
besides, I always have a Bluetooth dongle going.
I don't need another one.

As it is I'm running out of USB slots.

Do you not already have issues connecting more than one Bluetooth device to that dongle?

That's including the 3 to 1 thingermabobber
probably not...
I have only connected my phone and the headset at the same time.
I have very good reason to believe that the problem is in the phone.

9:36 AM
how small is too small?

I would like one quite oversized...
brb

hmmm
I don't think you will find one that is both full or oversized and Bluetooth

that has been my experience

you either get small bluetooth or large wireless

the wireless keyboard and mice combos I have tried (3?) have had an annoying delay if I put my feet up and hold the keyboard in my lap. The problem seems to be distance related. However, the Bluetooth headset hears me all over the apartment.
I think when I replace my phone, the Bluetooth headset will be fine.
I am working on a scathing review of VeryKool phones.

9:41 AM
who knew a cheap make few people have even heard of would have negative points? :P

precisely
but they're for sale on Amazon
GCI got a deal apparently
I have found the perfect dumb phone to actually use as a phone.
I'll keep the VeryKool free device since I only use it for tethering and free Wi-Fi anyway.
it wasn't my imagination...
The smart phone I have is about as bad as it gets as far as usability.
that's how GCI and (probably the federal government) got a hold of a boatload of them.
The dumb phone I want is engineered for use on construction sites.

I know the kind of thing
big buttons, rubber bumpers

Perfect for me in many ways.. Yep
did I tell you that I am reviving Ripley's Results??

I don't even know what Ripley's Results is...

Ripley's Results is the name of my dog training business.
Once upon a time it lived in a strip mall in Maryland.
the complex I am in now is full of dogs...
OOH!
I Googled an old client of mine to use her as a reference.
Check this out!!
This is the same couple who have that ridiculously colorful house they're trying to sell...

9:54 AM
oh yes

She told me that story while I was working with her dog.
the elementary school that I still have nightmares about was named after their family.
I've been saying "she", but I should really be saying "they".
I just have spent more time with her, than with him.
at one point she asked me if I'd be willing to drive her dog from Des Moines to ( California??)
she couldn't stand the idea of her little precious being in a kennel for the flight.
Of course I quickly said yes.

$10 a mile!

hell yeah!
of course her little precious couldn't be in anything but the best hotels when we had to stop
more dollars than sense
I was really hoping she would hold on to that idea.
Honestly, that little dog was the most difficult dog I have ever worked with. truly a spoiled rotten Princess.
I really do need to replace my keyboard and mouse.
Sometimes it is just easier and faster to use a keyboard and mouse to make corrections to Dragon, but the joy of using the headset is that I can be very comfy while using it. The keyboard is a pain in the ass.
I am very good at the Free First Lesson....

10:07 AM
hmm

the Hubbell's First Free Lesson was a doozy.
I have a very practiced little spiel of giving my resume, during which time I size up the dog. Then I ask the clients to demonstrate a few things for me "just to get some perspective".
They had mentioned that occasionally they have to put the dog in her kennel...
So, I asked Charlotte to put Coco in the kennel, just like she normally does.
What followed was some of the more amusing things I have ever seen as a dog trainer.
Charlotte put several Yum Yums in her pocket and then sweetly called the precious cocoa over to eat a few.
Then Charlotte whispered sweetly into Coco's ear that the kennel wasn't a bad place to be.
Coco had done this routine a few times so she got a few more Yum Yums before running away
then Coco got a soothing massage, more sweet nothings, and was gently placed into her kennel while Charlotte quickly closed the door. Then Coco got more Yum Yums.
15 minutes later, I asked if I could try.
Two claps, a point, and a "kennel up" worked just fine.

Lol
people (try to) parent in the same way
begging and pleading and bribing

yes, it's a phenomenon I've noticed.

Jesus people, you're the boss. You're their parent not their goddamn friend. My way or the highway

Kids respond to me in very much the same way as dogs do.
Another amusing thing is what happens after "doggie day care".
Dogs never want to leave.
Not only am I making this apartment perfect for me, I am also keeping in mind emergency foster parenting.
I could have been unpacked by now, but I am being extremely meticulous about it.

10:28 AM
Start as you mean to go on

That is exactly the plan.
I want to really have a place for everything, and that is its home.
If I can't find something, that means I have put it away wrong.
I'm not done until I have no more "wrong".

sounds like a plan :)
oh, @Jolenealaska CSC :)

I see we're back to the @Jolenealaska and @ElendilTheTall show. I could sell tickets.
@ElendilTheTall I still don't know what that means.

@FaheemMitha all part of the show

11:00 AM
@Jolenealaska csc

I'm working on gumbo as we speak. I stopped by the Legion today and saw that they had put yesterday's Cornish hen on the steam table. This stuff was so dried out as to be inedible.
Score!
2 gallons of chicken broth, no charge!

sweet
oh, a site you might like: chefsteps.com
quite a bit of sous-vide stuff

once upon a time I noticed that my mother had a ridiculous number of crockpots....
Yes, that's Michael.
I'm on their mailing list and I've taken a couple of classes from them

ah
carry on

I'd go to the car right now and get the last of my groceries (especially those for the gumbo), but I'm disinclined because it's dark out, and both of the handicap spaces are occupied.
in an hour, USAA (in Texas) will be open.
I need to stay up until then.
They have really pissed me off.

11:18 AM
oh?

yeah. You tell me if I'm being unreasonable.
I have been very happy with their customer service (as far as the peons) they're great. I am also very happy with the renters insurance, the car insurance, the business insurance, and the bond I am buying through them.
However, the checking account has pissed me off.

I realize that it is bad form to write a check when you don't actually have money in the account. However, since I had cash in my pocket, I wasn't concerned.
After spending all weekend trying to give them money, without success, I started to become concerned.
I couldn't actually speak to anyone at USAA all weekend, but I did talk to my little credit union here.
after speaking to my credit union, and then to the super nice person who answered my questions when I called Monday morning, I learned of the way to make cash deposits to USAA from Alaska.
it's convoluted, but in order to make a cash deposit, I have to buy a money order and then bring it to the UPS store with my ATM card. They scan the money order, and use my ATM card to treat the money order as cash.
So far so good...
in fact, the first deposit I made that way was instantly credited to my account.
So, I bought a money order for all the cash I had and deposited it the same way.
It wasn't until several hours later, and after USAA closed (they're three hours behind me), that I thought that a hold had been placed on that cash. A four day hold.
So I called and pleaded my case that the hold should be listed in this one specific case.
They knew that the money was in the form of a Western Union money order. I told them that that money represented all my cash at the moment, but that direct deposits were coming their way quickly.
I went up the food chain with my requests and case.
When I finally got a person on the "executive board", she sounded like she was reading a script based on keywords I was using instead of actually looking at the problem and trying to solve it. It was only in an aside that she mentioned the possibility of wiring the money.
Of course by now it was too late, because all of my money was tied up in the hold.
They do all of their check clearing overnight. The hold on my funds was released at midnight. Between 11 o'clock and midnight, I bounced three checks, at a fee of $29 per.
saw not "thought"
lifted not "listed"
worse than the fee, (which totally ruined my birthday because now I'm broke and can afford my new phone) are the bounced checks and the reputation that comes with that.
Plus, each of those bounced checks will bring a charge on the other side too.

11:38 AM
(⊙_☉)
so why did they put a hold on it?

I'm still not clear why, and I've read all of the fine print that I can find on the subject.
The best the "executive" could parrot is that since my account is new they couldn't tell whether or not the money order was counterfeit. And then she went on to defend that policy instead of giving me alternative options (like wiring the money).
in 15 minutes I'm going to log off here and look more closely at the math. I'm fairly certain that nothing would have bounced without the hold.

banks are a law unto themselves

The hold that I was never told about, that is ridiculous on its face (I can only buy a money order with cash), that I was specifically told would not happen (" deposits made like that are like bringing cash to a bank"), and that no amount of pleading could get them to lift even in the face of a difficult, and unexpected, circumstance...

11:53 AM
hmmm

12:13 PM
@Jolenealaska These Hubbell people were clients of yours?

12:54 PM
tumbleweeds in here...
