01:00 - 12:0012:00 - 21:00

1:12 AM
Android experts (you know who you are):
I want my phone to alarm every 12 hours. Just like a regular alarm, I want to be able to snooze or shut it up until the next alarm. Can I do it?

@Jolenealaska There are alarm apps you could use. Not sure if they will do this.
I installed a couple. Haven't really used them yet.

I have a pill that I'm supposed to take 12 hours, and I suck at it.
I suppose I could use a timer...the one that comes installed only allows 1 digit for hours, though.

1:36 AM
@Jolenealaska Sure.
Set two alarms, each going off daily.

Well!

The built-in "Clock" or "Alarm" app should be able to do that.

That should work :)

Good luck!

1:37 AM
Come back and/or post a screenshot if you need more help.
@FaheemMitha I'm sure we've had questions about that!

The hardest part now is picking the best time.

Not to mention sardony (or is it sardonism?), cynicism...

With my erratic sleep schedule....

That I cannot help you with...
Unless there is a way for Android to predict the best time.

3am, 3pm I guess. I'm almost always up then (I think)

1:39 AM
@FaheemMitha Sure I do! Although I don't know him well...
@Jolenealaska If not, you can always change the time of the alarm before you go to bed.
Then change it back later, or not.
I set my alarm every night before bed.
Because I usually wake up at different times.
So I don't use repeating alarms, just a unique one every night.

The point is that I'm not supposed to. The doctor stressed it a lot. Like clockwork, she said.

As an alternative, you could use calendar reminders instead of alarms: they will not make a sound if your phone's sound is off, but you will still see the notification when next you look at the phone.
Ah OK.
Then fixed alarms it is.

Since the drug is supposed to help my walking, I am a bit more motivated than I would be for just any pill.

By the way, I would like you to check what version of Android you're using. Because, beginning at version 5.0, alarms no longer go off when you set your phone to silent. Settings → System → About Phone → Android Version.
I presume you will set your phone to silent while you sleep, so as not to be woken by other notifications.
(Alarms are a special exception in Android before version 5; from 5 onwards, it involves a bit more configuration. You will probably want to use Priority Mode in 5.)

I don't actually. My ring tone is a very familiar song, it won't wake me up from a deep sleep, but I'm aware of it if I'm lightly sleeping.
The alarm tone I have chosen is a very obnoxious rooster.
That will wake the dead.

1:51 AM
Haha, good.
Good luck!
You can probably set the volume of the alarm separately from your ringtone's volume.

Thanks :) I'll let you know, but it seems that it will work.
As a matter of fact I'm going to change the times to the two next turns of hour as a test run.

Either press the volume button, then quickly press the gear icon in the pop-up; or go to Settings → Device → Sound.
Or just set them to a time 2 and 3 minutes from now...

I've got them set for 5 minutes from now and 1 hour and 5 minutes from now. I'm going to put the phone in the other room and shut the door.
If I can hear it thought that, it should wake me up, too.
That's loud!! :)
How can I look to see what version of Android I'm running?
The alarm volume appears to be separate from the master volume (which is good, I have been known to unknowingly turn the volume way down)

2:16 AM
@Jolenealaska There is this old-fashioned but effective concept of a pill box. Works quite well for keeping track of what you've taken and haven't. There are little cubicles within the box ordered by day/time of day.
@Jolenealaska Go to settings. Then, About Phone.

4.2.2

@Jolenealaska there are many phone apps. @terdon recommended Wakely, which seems reasonable.
No, Timely, sorry. I also have something I installed from Fdroid.

So far it seems that the alarm that is already installed will do the trick just fine.

@Jolenealaska ok
The version history of the Android mobile operating system began with the release of the Android beta in November 2007. The first commercial version, Android 1.0, was released in September 2008. Android is under ongoing development by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), and has seen a number of updates to its base operating system since its initial release. The most recent major Android update is Android 5.0 "Lollipop", which was released on November 3, 2014. Since April 2009, Android versions have been developed under a confectionery-themed code name and released in alphabetical order...
@Jolenealaska Incidentally, the android site has its own chat. Not very active, though.

Yeah, I've been there. I think all of the stacks have their own chat.

2:25 AM
They do.
Anyway, that's a more natural place to ask such questions.

Yes, but there is no one there!
I knew Cerby would come through :)
2 hour Masterchef tonight! Woohoo!
...and I have an alarm set to tell me to turn on the TV!

2:47 AM
1 hour ago, by Cerberus
By the way, I would like you to check what version of Android you're using. Because, beginning at version 5.0, alarms no longer go off when you set your phone to silent. Settings → System → About Phone → Android Version.
Oh, you already figured it out.

3:05 AM
My second alarm just went off. I can't think of a single reason that this won't work just right.
It doesn't even need to be reset.
I need to not let the battery die. That's it.

3:25 AM
Yes, just make sure it goes off every day.
Usually you have to mark all the weekdays.
Hasta mañana!

3:36 AM
@Cerberus I did! I'm soooo smart, especially about techie stuff :)

2 hours later…
5:56 AM
@ElendilTheTall I think he is either related to the oven, or he likes to split checks. One of those, anyway.

6:53 AM
Tall!!
Guess what?
I have my whole book pretty much outlined. It's a good thing too, I am slowing down.

Substituting active dry yeast and tepid water with instant yeast and milk
Hello, BTW
Any ideas?
will it work?

Yes, it will work.

Sure?

Instant yeast and active dry yeast are pretty much interchangeable.

Great

6:59 AM
Yep, I'm sure.

Thanks

A: active dry yeast and rapid rise yeast

JolenealaskaIf you're making the dough by hand, you can substitute 1:1, expect the bread to rise a bit faster using rapid rise or instant. If you're using a bread machine, use 25% less (slightly over 1 3/4 tsp to substitute rapid rise or instant for one packet of active dry). From King Arthur Flour: One...

And this:
7
Q: How to convert a recipe calling for active dry yeast into rapid rise yeast?

KatieKI have a recipe for rolls where the first stage calls for 2 packages active dry yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1/2 cup warm water to be mixed until the yeast is proofed, and then 1/4 cup cubed butter is added to the proofed yeast. Then all of that is added to half of the flour (2 cups) and 2 tsp salt ...

Have your milk just barely warm (105 F or 41 C).

7:15 AM
@Gigili you don't need to add the yeast to the liquid, just stick it in with the dry ingredients

I was just about to say that!
:)
I just figured out a way I can prove that the slight discoloration on my kitchen walls is not smoke damage from the fire.
There is a tiny sticker on a wall that has been there for over a year. Her handyman should recognize it and be able to approximately date it.
No line of demarcation?

Handyman/archaeologist

:)
(that's the cleaning crew)
I only noticed the sticker because I was cleaning a window.
The window that the handyman replaced about a year ago.
SCORE!!
For dramatic effect, I haven't removed the sticker. I did look behind Raquel though. No line.

pffft, the recipe calls for creme fraiche

got milk?
and 24 hours?

7:28 AM
Milk, yes... but 24 hours??

I've never tried cultured butter, is it an American kind of butter or what?

It doesn't have to be buttermilk. Anything with active cultures.
Actually, cultured butter is the opposite of American!

Life gets very complicated!
I actually found a recipe for homemade creme fraiche and buttermilk

Yes. Cultured butter is common in Europe especially. It's almost unheard of in the US.

7:32 AM
The problem is I don't like to wait that long (36 hours)
A supermarket in the US:

That is the trick. You can probably get away with 20 hours, but less that it will just be warm lukewarm mikk or cream.

That is one of two US brands I know of :)
I used the blue one in broiche.
And that looks just like the shelf at my local Fred Meyer.
It's actually easier to find imported cultured butter.
Almost every large grocery store carries Kerrygold, which is kind of Irish. The other US brand I know of is a big name in organic products.
This is funny: The Kerrygold is at the far right of that picture. I was using the magnifier to see if the price label said the name of the store.
At my Fred Meyer, the Kerrygold is on the other side of the kiosk.

8:02 AM
@Jolenealaska continental europe

Hi! Got your coffee poured?
You've heard my contiguous vs continental rant, right?
right=left
I was no good at that in the army either.

@Jolenealaska yes

The walkthrough of my apartment with the landlord is in 3 days.
I hate moving soooo much.

yup. it's easier to just torch the place and change identities*

the thought has occured

8:13 AM
*Statement made for comical purposes only. Don't try this at home.

too late!

I think I recently wrote my nerdiest answer yet on SA.

Q: Which average weight % of the banana is edible? i.e. Which % of the banana is not peel?

Tachibana ianI got ~1 Kg of bananas and I want to calculate the calories in it. Provided that the peel is discarded, which is the remaining mass of bananas from the original Kg? Since I have no weight measuring equipment at hand I looked up for the info, but couldn't find anything.

It's really sad that it is true.

8:30 AM
oh how I want to break free, wo oh oh
sorry, your last line set me to singing I want to break free

How is it that I had to Google a Queen song?

I don't know
it's a sad gap in your knowledge

Tragic really. I dearly love Bohemian Rhapsody.

what other legendary Queen songs don't you know?

8:42 AM
The Seven Seas of Rhye?
Crazy Little Thing Called Love?

Those I know (of).

you should know Crazy Little Thing Called Love off by heart!
a classic!

I'm sure I could sing with it, but not off the top of my head.
I just wrote my first question on Writers.

I just... can't handle it

I checked for dupes, I wonder if it will will manage to stay open?
Out of 30+ accounts, I don't think I have ever written a first question that remained open!
*may not actually be true

user13107I ate some East Asian dish recently and it looked something like this: [image source: http://www.thetabletopcook.com/images/tabletop-cooking-homemade-taiwanese-hot-pot.jpg] I had never eaten anything that looks like it. I dislike this kind of food intensely

LOL
I own two hot pots!

hot pot is the name of the food, not a kind of dish

It's also the pot.

only where you shop

8:56 AM
foolishness
random stuff floating in salty water...mmmmmm

It's very social.
Usually more like fondue than a stew.
Without the dipping sauces it would be pretty boring.

bah, social
that requires friends

or the internet
Guess what I did today!

you can eat shabu shabu over the internet?

(you'll never guess)

9:01 AM

I zipped my favorite jeans!
I couldn't sit down in them...

If it wasn't the ingredients, I could bake a cake every two or three hours

there she is.
@Gigili did you see the banana bread recipe I posted here a few weeks ago?

No?

Apr 10 at 12:31, by Jolenealaska
Hold on, this is a very cool recipe:
It was really, really good.

I could spend all day long in the kitchen, if it was a bit bigger and fully equipped, e.g. 2+ KitchenAid stand mixers etc.

I pawned my KitchenAid a couple of years ago. Just now I have a used stand mixer.
I went so long without one that it was eating a hole in my soul.

9:16 AM
@Jolenealaska It might sound a bit funny, but What other fruit can I use to substitute banana?

Not a thing I can think of.

Haha!
Lack of ingredients, again

Zucchini bread is very much like banana bread, but the substitution wouldn't work in that recipe.
It's worthwhile to allow the bananas to get very overly ripe too.
Almost entirely black.

banana and chocolate chip muffins

I should go shopping then

Yum, anything chocolate-ish is my fav

I am a big fan of danish pastry too

I've never heard of golden caster sugar.
Is it less refined? Or does it have molasses added?
It's funny how similar those two recipes are.

and muscovado sugar

@Gigili The video attached to that recipe (the ATK one) is worth watching if you haven't already done the free trail.

9:32 AM
I have :(

Muscovado is a lot like American brown sugar.

@Jolenealaska it's unrefined, yes

Instead of added molassas, it hasn't had the brown removed.
@ElendilTheTall Would Sugar in the Raw be a reasonable substitute?

@Jolenealaska i have no idea
regular caster sugar or even just regular granulated would be fine
it is not soft, it's in grains

My writer's question got an answer. "Consult a lawyer" Dammit!
Even Google isn't helping me figure out D---O.O---b.

I think it's just a rephrasing of the top answer - ie it means it's too perfect

I surprised that the question hasn't been upvoted more.
I missed the "especially as it applies to art" line.
Somehow that makes the question seem less interesting to me.
I forgot that I could see vote counts on that stack. Cool.

Ingu ShamaWhy was this member's account suspended for such a long period of time? I'm pretty active on this site and I've not really seen this member do anything especially heinous.

I saw Mad Max: Fury Road last night
2 hours of noisy brilliance

It's showing at my neighborhood theater.
The last "mad max movie" I saw starred Mel Gibson.

that's because he's starred in all of them bar this one

Really?

11:27 AM
yup

damn pink piece.
I've only seen the first one, and I don't really remember it.
Will the current one stand alone?

there's a sequel planned
it stands alone so far as the previous films are concerned

That's what I meant.

yeah, you don't have to have seen any of the others
Charlize Theron is remarkably good

Did you see her play the real-life serial killer?

11:36 AM
yes, I think so

I was quite impressed with her acting.

She's great

Other than that role, I don't really know of her.

looks a bit different in MM

Yep, that's different alright!

they took 480 hours of raw footage to film Mad Max
that's... mad!

What's average?
(hours of raw footage)

i have no idea, but you can be damn sure it's not 20 days' worth
ah, Wikipedia knows all: the average shooting ratio is between 6:1 and 10:1
so for your average 2 hour movie - between 12 and 20 hours!

That feels really low!
Morgan Freeman recorded the entire narration of Shawshank in like a day.
But there was a weird hum on the recording.
The second time, it him like two weeks.
That would really suck!

Rumbledethumps is a traditional dish from the Scottish Borders. The main ingredients are potato, cabbage and onion. Similar to Irish colcannon, and English bubble and squeak, it is either served as an accompaniment to a main dish or as a main dish itself. Cooked leftovers from a roast meal can be used. However, to make fresh rumbledethumps one needs to lightly sauté the shredded onion and cabbage in butter until the onion is translucent and the cabbage wilted, then add some potatoes mashed with butter, salt and pepper; after thoroughly mixing the ingredients, they are placed into an oven proof...
