@ElendilTheTall Holy Crap!!!
The other day we were talking about weird phobias (butterflies??! Really!?!). I wracked my brain trying to think of a phobia of my own. I'm a wee bit claustrophobic, and I don't like going to the dentist, but neither of those are extreme, or odd.
I got it.
I hate, hate driving over long bridges. I don't mind being the passenger, but I can't stand driving on them. Somewhere in New England there is a very long, high bridge. I don't remember exactly where. Some enterprising dudes would drive it for you for $10. They each held signs on opposite sides of the bridge.
I paid them every time.
There is no way I would drive that bridge. 26 miles? Forget about it.

12:45 AM
One of the obstacle courses in basic training had a long high one of these:
That didn't bother me one bit. It freaked out a lot of people though.

1:05 AM
OK guys, help me out.
@rumtscho
@ElendilTheTall
@Cerberus
And anyone else who might want to chime in.
I want a tablet. I would use it to watch videos, surf the web and chat.
Since I have a long and healthy relationship with Amazon, I'm leaning towards the Kindle Fire.
I'm leaning towards the $154 option.
In terms that would make sense to me, what is the difference between 16 GB for $184 and 8 GB for $154?
I hate the learning curve that comes with new techie stuff.
I resisted Windows for 3 years.
Basically, I want to always have something to entertain me if I am in a line or something.
Being able to bring videos to bed would be cool too.
Gaming is a non-issue. I don't play video games that need more computer power than Baldur's Gate.
A nice feature would be the capability to plug in an external keyboard.

1:47 AM
Hmm..."8GB (4.8GB available to user) or 16GB (11.9GB available to user) of internal storage"
Also: "USB 2.0 (micro-B connector) port for connection to a PC or Macintosh computer or to charge your device"
So does that mean I can connect this?

2:15 AM
@jolenealaska flying visit!

Hi hon!
Isn't it the dead of night?

3:15
Early flight and a drive to get to it

Thought so.
UGH!
I have an event tonight.
I've got my hair in hot rollers.
I'm going to this:

Lol
And a green face pack?

I did the face pack yesterday.
Don't look now...
Shshsh
Stop talking about him.

2:22 AM
Sounds like fun!
I will advise you presently.

How lucky is the person who said, "Hmm, now that it is legal but the state hasn't worked out retail, so I'll start doing members-only parties!"
And then gets an address of 420.
The place is perfect.

Will you have access to Wifi while waiting in line?

Umm.
Oh, the party.

Probably not, but I would have things saved.

2:27 AM
I don't have much time, I need to go to bed half an hour ago.
If you have things saved, then you can use those.
But 4.8 GB is very little.

been there, done that

For games, films, photos...

3 or 4 favorite movies?

One movie can be 0,5 GB or anything up to 5GB.

Hmmm

2:28 AM
A game can be 0.5 GB.
There's also photos, and lots of stuff we didn't think of.

I won't install any games but Scrabble

So you say now.
You will probably regret having that little space.

For $30 more I can get 16gb

It is a terrible rip-off, but, unless it has a slot for memory cards, I wouldn't even consider 8GB.
The second disadvantage is that the tablet has no access to Google Play, where most of the good stuff is, games and applications.
You can probably get Google Play to work on it, though, if you hack it a little bit.

What I am most likely to do is: Chat here, answer questions on main, read books, and watch videos.
That is pretty much it.

2:33 AM
You will probably also surf the web and play games...

Oh yeah...surfing definitely
Games, not so much.

But you don't need much storage for surfing.

Nope

The thing is, with electronics: you never know how you will use them, and, if you are unable to do stuff you turn out to really want, you're screwed.

That is a cool thing about Amazon.
They bend over backwards to make you happy.
If I realize within a month that I should have spent more, I think they would facilitate the upgrade.

2:38 AM
Really?

I broke my first kindle by putting my knee though it.

Ouch!

They overnighted a new kindle to me at no charge.

I would probably recommend a Nexus 7 over a Kindle Fire HD: ebay.com/sch/…
@Jolenealaska Wow, that's very nice.

I literally got it the next day,.

2:39 AM
That is impressive.
But you will probably only notice how small that storage space is after a while.

Yeah...probably.
I notice that it has a camera...
that is one way I could see whipping through memory.

Photo's are far smaller than video or games.
One photo is about 0,002 GB, depending on your camera/settings.
But hey, does the Kindle lack a camera??
I assumed it would have one.
That is another reason to get a Nexus instead.
You may not use it much, but, when you need it, you will be very glad you have it.
When you quickly want to send us a picture.
When you want to scan a QR code.
Etc.

Yes, the kindle has a camera.
I think I would carry it everywhere, as I do my current kindle.

Ah OK.
This is the latest Nexus 7, I would get this one instead of the other link I posted: ebay.com/itm/…
It is a lot cheaper than the Kindle, $100.
And probably more capable.
16GB of storage.
And it has Google Play.
That one is second-hand, though, but from a seller with a good reputation.
By the way, are you sure you want a 7" tablet?
Not saying you shouldn't, but it is something to think about.

The only reason I want 7" is portability.
If I can't stick it in my purse without thought, forget about it.

2:52 AM
Right, so 7".
So the Kindle is not a bad tablet per se, but it is fairly old, it has no Google Play, is fairly expensive, and I think you really need 16GB.

OK
If I do go with the Kindle, I will get 16GB.

I think that would be wise.
But give it some more thought, take your time.
Purchases like this need to ripen.

:)
Yes, I will consider at least through the weekend.

Hehe.

I need to finish getting ready. Who knows? My next ex-husband might be there.
Thanks for the advice!

3:05 AM
Haha.
Have fun!
See you on the morrow.

That is the plan. I love fun.
I am even taking a cab, so no worries.

Good, good.
@Jolenealaska By the way.
I see Amazon has another version, the HDX, which is faster and has 16GB for $180.

3:23 AM
Hmmm...as if I wasn't already confused.
200 is my absolute upper limit.
Hi Tall!

At the airport! Catch you on the flipside y'all!

where are you going?
business or fun?

Spain! Fun!

YAY!
So wife and kids??

Of course

3:26 AM
Double YAY!!!
Have a great time.
Give a hug to each of them. Only you need know that it's from me.
Spain is on my bucket list.

Will do! Cya hon!

Yowza on the food scale!

4 hours later…
7:18 AM
@Jolenealaska it's tough to give advice here
Personally, I'd never buy a Kindle Fire
it's as different from a real tablet as a Playstation is different from a PC
it's more of a unitasker, a media playing device
the problem is with the videos.
The Kindle Fire has tons of limitations you might run into or not
but it is the only one which can play back Amazon streaming videos
and it can't play streaming videos from any other service, like Netflix
I think YouTube is OK, it's subscription media services they don't allow
but they also refuse to let other Android devices play their own videos
so if your primary goal is to watch movies, you should choose based on your subscription (and you can't change your mind later unless you buy another tablet).
The USB port on a tablet is meant for the tablet to become a computer's periphery device, not the other way round
you can connect a keyboard using a cheap adapter though, at least on standard Android
It works without the need for installing apps, so maybe Amazon's tablet supports it too
As for the storage capacity, you don't want to store videos on it. You stream them.
The smaller device will probably be fine. Data doesn't belong on a tablet, it belongs elsewhere.
You only keep on the tablet what you are currently consuming, you don't use it to keep large collections of documents or media
one exception is if you want to use it as a music player and insist on always having all your music available in your pocket
oh, if you need a tablet which you will carry around, you probably want Internet connectivity
I don't know how it is in the USA, here it's practically only the mobile phone network when you're on the road. Wifi spots are uncommon.
So you'd need a tablet with LTE or at least UMTS if you want to use Internet on the road (which is quite useful)
unless the Whispernet allows you some kind of Wifi access, I don't know that
but if you want mobile Internet, you'll have to pay for a mobile contract with data. Ask somebody American about these things, I don't know how your price structures work
You may get away with not having Internet on the tablet, if you preload it with the stuff which you want to use while you're on the road
note that even with a contract, watching films is not usually an option, because they use up too much of your limited data

7:41 AM
Amazing timing...

but streaming music, using the navigation, checking mails, using apps for finding an ATM or a restaurant or whatever you need nearby, etc. is all useful when you're out
more useful when you're in a foreign city than at home, I don't know how often this happens to you

well....
perceptions have changed

if you just want entertainment when you wait in the doctor's office, getting a few books preloaded on the Kindle app should be enough
@Jolenealaska changed how?

fascinating last two hours.
Luckie, Linda and Mary

who are they?

7:46 AM
Excuse me...sorry
fingers kind of dead
OK

Warning: I have to go in 15 min :( Signed up for a workshop. But until then, I'm all ear

Lucky or Lucky or actually very
...crap, then maybe best saved for another day.
I will take to heart all you and Cerby had to say.

@Jolenealaska OK. I'll write more if I can think of something else. But really, consider your scenarios for data usage, they are important. You can't add mobile network capabilities to a tablet which does not have them already, but if you don't need them, it's cheaper to buy a Wifi only tablet.

a lot to consider...I won't jump into anything. In the meantime I want to write about Luckie(y)shit (I kid you not), Mary and Linda. So, I'll catch you soon.
G'night

I'll be out for the next 10 hours at least. But let's see what comes later.
Have fun with your mysterious entertainment
and if these are new friends you met, I'm very, very glad for you!

1 hour later…
9:00 AM
hi folks

2 hours later…
11:12 AM
@rumtscho @Jolenealaska also wants to use it to watch videos away from home. It has no mobile Internet: usually those tablets are more expensive, but she wouldn't want that anyway, because mobile Internet is very expensive in America.
Besides, she would eat up her expensive data plan way too fast watching videos.
So she needs to be able to store videos and games on it for offline use.
4.8 GB really is far too little. After installing a couple of apps, a game, two HD films, it's full.
And it really sucks to have a tablet that is always (nearly) full.
A keyboard you connect through Bluetooth, not wired.
Bluetooth keyboards shouldn't be too expensive.
You can probably sideload Netflix and such on a Kindle.

You shouldn't need to sideload Netflix: amazon.com/Netflix-Inc/dp/B005ZXWMUS/… ... also T-Mobile data isn't insanely expensive. Just somewhat expensive. As long as you have T-Mobile coverage.
Anyway, going back to bed.

@derobert Jolene is on a very low budget...
$30/month is probably more than she cares to pay.
Go back to bed!
But it's good to know that you don't even have to sideload Netflix.

It's $10/mo if you already have a T-Mobile cell phone plan. Otherwise, at least $20, so yeah. Unfortunately Netflix can't cache content offline (e.g., on wifi) for later viewing
I think Amazon Prime Videos can, on Amazon Fire tablets only.
And now... bed.

I think she has Amazon Prime.
But she can always just download her films.
And I think she doesn't have a mobile plan currently?
Maybe is prepared to spend $20/month for a mobile plan, I don't know.

7 hours later…
6:05 PM
@TFD: Why did you remove the ["Case closed your honour"](http://cooking.stackexchange.com/a/56714/34942)? I thought it was funnier with that phrase...
Note: no critique: just asking; didn't roll back...

6:30 PM
@Jefromi Thanks for the edit. :)

6:49 PM
@Fabby I might avoid putting jokes in fonts that large; if you're going to draw extra attention to something maybe it should be the core of the answer. But it's totally fine to do things like that; feel free to edit it back in, it's your answer.
And TFD doesn't seem to have been in chat, so won't be notified by your @ there. But you can @ on the answer for editors (it won't autocomplete but it does work) if you want to point it out.
@Cindy Yup!

2 hours later…
8:41 PM
@Jolenealaska hi, are you here? You wanted a listener for a story, and I am home now
I have an hour or two until bed

Hello, people.

2 hours later…
11:09 PM
@Jefromi I just wanted to know... Every community is different. ;-)
But a mod that doesn't visit the chat room is a bit sad, though...
