2:15 AM
my complex's rental office runs public Wi-Fi that they never turn off. It is maybe 500 meters away from my window, from which there is direct line of sight. Could I use this to just link into them? I know they don't turn it off because I have driven to the building in the middle the night just to look up a phone number.
If that provides data usage to my phone, can I then tether my dead (it still picks up data from hotspots) phone to my computer to chat here?

I don't think the wifi signal would reach
You can get a more powerful reciever but the transmitter might just be too weak
I don't really know though
> I live about 600 feet from my rental office which has free wi-fi. I got a intermitent week signal with your product. Was not useful for use.

500 m is probably a massive overestimate.
As such, 500m is only 1640 feet.
I really don't care about speed, I don't need much speed to chat, or to look up phone numbers, or to check my account balance.
Another key point that may be a part of that reviewers problem is that I will almost never use it while the office is open. I tend to chat at night.
That being the case, I won't be sharing bandwidth with anyone (or at least very few people).
for that price I'm inclined to give it a shot, I can always return it if it doesn't work. I wonder if the reviewer had anything remotely close to line of sight? I can actually hang my head out the window and see the rental office.
in a couple of months it will be dark all the time, so nobody is likely to notice my little antenna outside the window facing the rental office. I'm kind of intrigued!
Although, if it does work, I wonder how long it will be before enough people do it that the rental office gets wise.

2:40 AM
Cheap enough that it's probably worth trying
Lot of negative reviews on customer service though

Yes, that always seems to be a side effect of low-cost.

1 hour later…
3:49 AM
I'm toast. I'm going to bed early (8pm here), but that means that I will probably be here again by no later than four hours after you start work @ElendilTheTall. I hope I catch you.

2 hours later…
6:12 AM
(slightly late) Good night!

7:12 AM
Morning all

8:04 AM
@Jolenealaska why are you trying to route the data through your phone? Plug the antenna directly in to your computer!

8:25 AM
Morning!

@Stephie how do
is all well in the magical environs of the Schwarzwald?

Busy. Meeting at university this mornig, a pile of paperwork ahead, vet appointment with cat and finally getting kids chauffeuered to their various activities.
But yes, everything else is just magical ;-)

Gosh, don't get them mixed up. You don't to chauffeur the paperwork to the university and take the kids to the vet

Especially as this would leave the cat still suffering back home!

indeed
what is wrong with the animal?

8:31 AM
So all well across the Channel?
Cat: mysterious but obviously painful lump at front leg. Vet suspects abscess (happens when involved in a fight) I fear a broken bone. Time and x-ray will tell.
For cat, the pain is secondary, but being confined to the house is horrible. And using the litterbox instead of the neighbours' flowerbeds.
We had a lot of caterwauling last night until he figured that his humans were too dumb to open any doors but were at least cooperative as far as sleeping arrangements went. So neither hubby nor I got much sleep, but had at warm, albeit slightly crampy feet.

I see
well, I'm sure the vet will sort it out
well, that sucks
the job I was going to apply for has disappeared from the website
it was open for another week
they must have changed their mind :(

8:53 AM
Can you still apply? Some other way?

I imagine the job is no longer available, is my point

Mhm. Still applying just as "rehersal run"? For next time something similar comes up?

There is no job to apply to

In German we have the term "Blindbewerbung". Exactly for these "there is no explicit opening" cases.
(And yes, I know there is an English term.)

I don't think there is actually
or at least I don't know it

8:56 AM
But what do you do now? For a living, I mean, not as in "I'm having a cup of coffee".

'not as in "I'm having a cup of coffee".' - that is implied in the way you asked. 'What are you doing now' vs. 'What do you do now?'

Hi @Cindy! Hi Laptop?

I have no job title. It is difficult to define, and in any case I am, as you know, a private person

@ElendilTheTall I know and I respect this.

suffice it to say that I am thoroughly bored and it doesn't pay enough
(which I realise is the case for many people)
the commute is also a pain
so i would like something closer, better paid and more importantly, something I actually want to do

9:04 AM
How long is your commute? Car, train, bus, bike?

car, train, walk - an hour

Ouch. Especially the combination.
I need ca. 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours, but I just drive. And while the autobahn can be a nightmare, I can at least listen to audiobooks etc.
And I don't come here every day.

indeed

Hi @Stephie.

9:20 AM
Hi @FaheemMitha!

@Stephie I'm surprised you have time to come here. It sounds like you have your hands full.

@FaheemMitha what am I, chopped liver?

I do. But I'm reading a documenation and waiting for another meeting.

@ElendilTheTall No, you're the International Man of Mystery. Did I do something to offend you? Seems to be a lot of that going around.
@Stephie Well, SE chat can be distracting. But you already know that.

And I must admit, you (= this chat) get only a few percent of my attention.

9:23 AM
@FaheemMitha only mock offence. But a hello would be nice ಥ_ಥ

@Stephie Well, one would hope so. Seeing as you have sick cats and stuff to take care of.

@Stephie ಠ_ರೃ I'm shocked!

@ElendilTheTall Super sorry. Hello. How are you?

Hello. Disappointed but otherwise ok thank you

@ElendilTheTall Disappointed? Were you hoping for a promotion?

9:25 AM
a job I was about to apply for disappeared into the ether

I should probably do some work, but I think I'll probably take a nap instead. Bad Faheem.
@ElendilTheTall Sorry to hear that. Photography related?

Besides, some paperwork can be dealt with by the brain stem, like for the parents' council. And sick cat is home, I'm 60km away. So no paw-holding possible.

@FaheemMitha yup

I like cats, but I imagine they are demanding patients. Like a feline version of Sheldon Cooper. And with possibly extra attitude.

@Stephie ah yes, the deep reptilian hindbrain responsible for breathing, cardiovascular control, and pointless paperwork

9:27 AM
@ElendilTheTall Applying for jobs is frustrating. And time-consuming. We've all been there.

@FaheemMitha it's even more frustrating when the jobs up and disappear

And it's worse when they lie to you about how you're the prime candidate for the job, or whatever.
@ElendilTheTall True. Was this some online thing?

Or HR writes to you and tells you that you are not qualified. That's always fun.

well, I've never had that

9:29 AM
@FaheemMitha Not really. He's the "silent sufferer" type. Ok, not so silent when he wants to go outside, but otherwise switching from chair to sofa and back, looking miserable and doozing. not interested in much, not even food.

as my CV basically consists of my Stack Exchange profile, I am qualified for most things.

@ElendilTheTall Have you thought of doing journalism related stuff? The Peter Parker/Clark Kent thing/Lois Lane thing.

@ElendilTheTall soo good to see that at least someone understands me.

@Stephie Oh, well, that's good. You don't want to be looking after Sheldon Cooper.
I used to hate paperwork. But I take it less seriously these days. The world is full of far worse things than paperwork.

@FaheemMitha as in a photojournalist?

9:30 AM
@ElendilTheTall Something like that.

No. I wouldn't know where to start

Maybe travel related stuff?

@FaheemMitha You realize I have two kids? Which statistically means six to eight instances of the sniffles or similar per year.

@ElendilTheTall You could try writing a blog to start with. Do you have one?
@Stephie So are your kids more demanding, then? And yes, I know you have two kids.

@FaheemMitha Photography of that kind is A) very hard to get into and B) transient. With a family, I need a steady wage
@FaheemMitha no

9:32 AM
@FaheemMitha ALL kids are demanding when sick. Even if they run a fever (which mine rarely do) and sleep a lot.

@ElendilTheTall Ok. But it could be part time work. And I don't know anything about this. And most things are hard to get into. Unless you want to do some mindless computer job involving PHP/Java.
@Stephie ALL?

Something like a travel blog, copiously illustrated with photos, would be something you could try to start with. See how you like writing about stuff.

@FaheemMitha and to where would I travel, pray tell?

@ElendilTheTall Locally? And maybe Europe.
Ever been to the Durrell thing on Jersey? I hear good things about it.
Well, maybe nap time. Later, folks.

9:35 AM
@FaheemMitha oh yes, I'll just book some tickets and pop over to Jersey o.O
it'll only be a couple of hundred quid

@FaheemMitha unless in a coma, I'd say.

@ElendilTheTall Is that a problem?

<slaps forehead>
(unsure, which)

@Stephie Ah.

@FaheemMitha one does not simply go to Jersey
or anywhere involving sea, air or rail travel
@Cindy is that you?
or is it just your default page opening again?

9:47 AM
@ElendilTheTall It's me!

hmmm
prove it ¬_¬

@ElendilTheTall Let's see..... I don't think I can. >.<
Hi @Stephie, @FaheemMitha.

@Cindy Hi! Laptop here yet?
Or are you still lounging at home, being paid for waiting?

@Stephie Nope. Still waiting.

have you spoken to anyone @Cindy? If that's your real name? ಠ_ಠ

9:58 AM
I did receive an e-mail from my manager late yesterday. I should receive a phone call this afternoon letting me know what I will be doing next week. Perhaps I can find out something then.

jeez aloo

@ElendilTheTall I assure you it is.

you remain under suspicion

@ElendilTheTall Nothing like a good heads up! Sheesh! I mean, if I have to travel, I like to plan a little more in advance.
@ElendilTheTall Story of my life. ;)

well
what's for lunch?
or breakfast?

10:07 AM
For breakfast, I'm trying to decide between scrapple and eggs or steak biscuit. For lunch, I'm thinking about the Chinese take-out that I didn't get yesterday.

'steak biscuit' sounds weird
biscuit is a scone, I know that
how does one serve steak with it?

Not exact, but similar.
How about you? What's for lunch?

ah, so a 'chicken fried steak'
that looks deeply unhealthy
I approve
lunch is once more a crappy cup noodle thing

No leftovers?

Bye everyone! I'm off for the afternoon's madness...

10:19 AM
@Stephie See ya!

@Cindy Alas no
Have you always eaten such large/involved breakfasts?
It seems to be an American thing
When we went to Boston, we stayed at a B&B run by an old lady. She gave us cereal, toast, fruit, then offered us bacon and pancakes. My usual breakfast is one slice of toast. She was genuinely shocked.
Apart from anything else, who has time for a big breakfast?
that old lady was smart as whip. used to work at MIT. her brother-in-law invented e-mail.

10:35 AM
No, not always. And compared to American norms mine are quite small. For example, if I have scrapple and eggs that's precisely what it is. No toast, potatoes, or other sides. Time-wise I have been able to enjoy that more in the past year. When I am working I often don't have time to cook. Re the biscuits, I make and freeze them as well as the cooked meats. Nuke 'em for a few seconds and then heat in the toaster oven and I have breakfast in less than 5 minutes.
@ElendilTheTall Cool.

she also drank like a fish
there was always a glass of wine secreted somewhere

@ElendilTheTall Not cool.

but she was nice, and her apartment was about 3 seconds from Quincy Market
it must be worth a fortune

@ElendilTheTall I'm sure! Quincy Market is a fun place. I wish we had something like that here!

mrs the tall liked the clam chowder from there
I preferred the pizza
Regina Pizza, IIRC

10:44 AM
I remember that I had pizza there, but can't recall any name. I haven't been there since the mid/late 90's.

Pretty good, but not as good as the one at 58th and 9th in New York
Naturally I didn't express that opinion in Boston...
Though I did buy a Yankees cap... dangerous is my middle name

@ElendilTheTall I'm surprised you found one in Boston.

@Cindy it was a chain hat store, they had them all
I believe the fact that I was already wearing a Patriots cap helped
and my accent
a British accent in the States goes a long way, I found. Heck, maybe I should apply for a job there
though one guy in a store on Newbury St did ask "So you guys are from Australia, right?" ಠ_ಠ
I replied, in the standard British deadpan sarcastic way, "Listen, there's no need to be insulting", it flew over his poor head, and he backpedalled furiously.
Apart from anything else, Mrs the Tall sounds more Scandinavian to the untrained ear than Australian

@ElendilTheTall Lol!

@Cindy ohgodimsorryididntrealise

10:53 AM
@ElendilTheTall I don't think I've ever heard a Scandinavian accent.

Naturally I just bid him good day and scattered the doormen with my cane as I swept out
@Cindy it's just like the Swedish chef from The Muppets
uncannily accurate

@ElendilTheTall Naturally.

but Mrs the Tall's accent isn't Scandinavian in any case

But her accent is slightly different than yours?

Completely different
I have a somewhat 'received pronunciation' accent, Mrs the Tall is from the far north of Scotland
i will find some youtube examples in a minute

11:10 AM
A few days ago I pointed Venus, Jupiter, and the Dog Star out to my daughter, as they are very prominent in the morning this time of year. This morning, she ran up to me and said "Daddy, Daddy, I can see the Dog's Guitar!"
To be fair, she had actually found the Dog Star all by herself, so it was a net win

Moments like that are precious. :)

Yes indeed. Sirius will now forever be the Dog's Guitar
it will go with the Cat's Pyjamas

I miss those days. They pass quickly. You don't realize that until they have passed.

11:33 AM
here you go, where she talks about the Highlands and Hebrides
that is more or less Mrs The Tall's accent

Interesting. I like the sound of those dialects much better than some of the others.
More pleasing to the ear.

yes, it is a more breathy, gentle accent
@Cindy have you heard Gaelic before?
It's weird hearing it out loud... normally I hear it muttered under the breath

11:52 AM
I couldn't understand a thing! Is that fairly similar to Celtic?

@ElendilTheTall and by now, you also have learned the phrase for "these damned Englishmen" even though you heard it muttered softly?

@Cindy there is no such language as Celtic

@Cindy English is less related to Gaelic than, say, to Italian

@rumtscho gloic is a common one

@ElendilTheTall My bad. I though there was.

11:55 AM
pronounced 'gloych'

@rumtscho hi!

with the '-ch' as in German buch

hi @Cindy
@ElendilTheTall "common one" as in "the preferred curse word"?

@rumtscho 'idiot'

I see. So people like the language because even the insults sound mellifluous?

11:59 AM
i don't know about liking it per se
it's their mother tongue
Welsh is a lovely language too
It has lots of English smattered through it where there isn't a Welsh word or phrase

Ah. I have never had contact to people whose mother tongue it is. So I've seen it referenced or used by people who chose to use it. They tend to have a soft spot for it. Usually they're of the "incurable romantic" type, and use it to create a Marion Zimmer Bradley style atmosphere.

there are no native Welsh swear words, for example

I also knew one scientist who loves it without the "wise old druids and brave highlanders" overtones. I have no idea how he came to it. But he even had his e-mail signature in that language.

@rumtscho Ah. Well, in the far North West of Scotland and the Isles, they often prefer it. All the road signs etc are bilingual

The guy is a Jew living in Israel, no idea how he came to see Gaelic as his hobby.

12:02 PM
Even Englishmen like myself gain a little respect when we can speak a little

@ElendilTheTall no?! How have these people survived before they started adopting loanwords?

@rumtscho ¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
@Cindy There was a Brythonic, which Gaelic and Welsh stem from, I believe, but few words survive. Mainly in place names. Combe meaning valley is Brythonic, as is tor, a pile of stones.
The Welsh are basically the descendants of the native Britons
pushed into Wales by the Saxons and Angles coming from Germany
You still see Welsh people with almost Southern European colouring - black hair, tan skin, usually small of stature - basically showing their ancient lineage.

@ElendilTheTall A wealth of knowledge! All very interesting. :)

i try

I wish that, in the US, we were taught more in school about other countries. Same with other languages. They have very few choices. When I was in school I had to choose between Spanish, French, and Latin. I took a year of Spanish but I really had no interest in any of them. I wished, at the time, that they offered German or Russian.

12:16 PM
We had French or German
Nowadays they have much more choice I believe
In terms of learning about other countries, most of what I have learned is self-taught
everyone teaches their own history
of course, our history embraces quite a few countries anyway
we were either invaded by them or invaded them ourselves

@ElendilTheTall Here it varies depending on the school district. I have a cousin who is several years older than I am who lived in a neighboring city. She took German in high school and went on to become a German teacher. She is retired now.

@Cindy it's very hard for a single school to offer multiple foreign-language options
it has to employ sufficient teachers (including substitutes) for every language
in such a way that it can somehow go through yearly differences in language popularity without having too much of an overcapacity or undercapacity in each of the languages
then, for a good program, it usually also has to enter some kind of cooperation with other institutions/foreign schools, so the pupils get the opportunity to borrow media in the target language, to go on language vacations, get contacts for pen pals from the relevant country, etc.
In Bulgaria, the best language-oriented highschools concentrate on a single language
the student chooses his highschool based on the language he wants to learn.
The ambitious ones do it, anyway. These specific schools have rather high entry criteria.
hello @JohanLarsson! We haven't seen you here for some time.

hello

Or have you been in the Frying Pan before? I remember you from the Incomprehensible Room.

he was here last week
you're the one who skipped town and left us :P

12:25 PM
I have been here, even discussed cooking once :)

Well, after two years of never taking a vacation, I have to use up the days I've accumulated, or they'll run out when my contract is over. Also, now I have a hobby which actually needs vacation days.
@JohanLarsson how unusual. Today's topic seems to be languages.

@rumtscho i know, I was just pulling your leg

@ElendilTheTall could you pull the other leg the next time? You're doing it so often, I'm starting to worry that this one is getting longer than the other.

@rumtscho I always alternate

OK, I have a kayak meeting again. Will be offline for a few hours. See you later.

12:36 PM
happy trails

12:52 PM
and then there was one...
yay, two
unless he's just turned his computer on...
aaaaaand another college shooting in the States

1:08 PM
@ElendilTheTall seems like it's becoming a regular thing.

indeed
Arizona - no license required for handguns or long guns, no permit required for concealed carry, no restriction on magazine capacity

I swear people have gone nuts! Did you see this? wcnc.com/story/news/local/gastonia/2015/10/08/…

Jay
Did the position of "blog" and "chat" get swapped recently?

I think that woman is actually legitimately nuts

Jay
I keep accidentally clicking on blog instead of chat

1:18 PM
@Jay you use your mouse? what kind of coder are you?

Jay
Also did you hear about the recent gun threat scare?
Right before the most recent gun massacre, there was a threat posted on 4chan or soemthing

@Jay but yes, it does look to have been swapped

Jay
last weekend someone posted a threat for a college near philadelphia
didnt say the exact college, just a college near phildelphia
so the fbi pretty came to phialdelphia and set up perimeters and extra added security
the threat for for monday(this week)
luckily nothing happened
@ElendilTheTall I KNEW I wasnt going crazy!

it's because the blog is sooooo popular

Jay
Also all of my art supplies got here except for the textured sponges

1:22 PM
Hello.

Jay
got so lucky. caught the delivery man right as i got home

user116848
Hello!

caught the delivery man, got lucky. gotcha

I wonder, why do these shooting happen so often in colleges?

@Cerberus @Arrowfar hi

Jay
1:23 PM
he was slightly delayed and i got home a bit earlier yesterday

@Cerberus why :)

Oopsie.

@Jay Congratulations.

Jay
perhaps because the shooters attend those college. And its during the college experience that their "psychosis" becomes fully realized?
i can see how some ill-adjusted people can have a melt-down during college
between not having parents to structure your life and balancing schoolwork and other parts of your life
i think i might have a ulcer or sore at the back of my throat

@Jay no comment

Jay
1:28 PM
i thought it was strep but no other symptoms of strep except for the painfulness when drinking water/saliva
@ElendilTheTall stop it I havent had sex in a long time, its not that

@Jay You think that's it, a sudden change of structure? But then how about kids who don't go to college but get a job at 18?
Why don't they shoot their office?

they don't get paid enough to buy a gun

And students do?

student loans
(I was only half serious)

user116848
@ElendilTheTall :)

1:33 PM
I must confess I have no idea what guns cost. $300-400?
@jay any idea?

I think around that price, a few hundred.
You think it's the student loans?

Jay
@Cerberus going to college seems like a lot more of a change compared to getting a job right out of high school.

Causing desperation, just as with Muslim terrorists?
@Jay Why? If you get your own place?

Jay
@Cerberus for the most part, people who get a job out of high school stay in the same home town. Aside from change of scenary their life isnt that much different from high school
Idk im just shooting random ideas.

user116848
I feel like joining the discussion. Can I?

user116848
1:37 PM
:)

@Arrowfar pfff, you don't need to ask

Jay
Im by no means an expert on mass murder... only an intermediate killer

it's the frying pan, just barge in

Jay
erm i mean... im a teddy bear

@Jay too late... you on a big ol' list now son
they'll probably paint you as a Chinese sleeper agent

Jay
1:39 PM
I wonder what my activation/trigger code is

"There is no pho, Mr Magoo"

user116848
@Cerberus So um, you think muslims kill because they want to create desperation? I don't follow.

@Arrowfar no, he means they are desperate themselves

@Jay Hmm you think so? I suppose, if the large majority stay in their home town, that leaves many fewer people with a sudden change of structure outside colleges.

Jay
@ElendilTheTall Hmmm might not be my trigger but certainly enough to make me want to murder someone. Running out of Pho.... trembles

user116848
1:42 PM
Yeah, okay. That's not why they kill I think.

@Jay urge to kill rising, rising, falling, rising, falling...

Jay
Oh im going on a Pho date on Saturday

@Arrowfar No: many young people who join e.g. IS do so because they are desperate: there is war in their country, their village has been destroyed, there are no jobs in their region, they have no future: that sort of thing. (Of course there are also others who join IS for other reasons.)

Jay
and by date i mean with a straight guy friend as a platonic thing

user116848
I'm not taking sides but you know... you know... :) I'm a muslim too. Hey!

user116848
1:43 PM
:-/

We're all something.

Jay
This place we are heading to is supposively the most authentic pho my friend has ever had(he's came to the US for college. he was originally from north vietnam)

Has he been there before?

Jay
I learned something new today

Or is it your idea?

Jay
1:45 PM
Pho is a breakfast food in Vietnam

user116848
@Cerberus Yeah I see your point.

Jay
Here in America its more commonly eaten during lunch or dinner

@Arrowfar OK.
@Jay Same here.

Jay
@Cerberus Yes, he is taking me there because i expressed how much i loved pho

If he is Vietnamese, then I'm sure he will know!
I like Pho; the only problem is that it is impossible to eat.

Jay
1:48 PM
@Cerberus impossible how

The spaghetti-like, wet noodles slither off my spoon. Actually, aren't you supposed to eat it with chopsticks?

Jay
@Cerberus you only use a spoon?!?
Pho noodles are quite different from spaghetti, in terms of thickness, shape and flour used to make it
but yes you are suppose to eat it with chopsticks and the asian soup spoons

@Jay I don't know! What should I use? Last time I ate it, a friend had made it. I think we were given spoons.
Right.
@Jay I know. That was just to indicate the general shape.

Jay
@Cerberus spaghetti is round, pho is rectangular in shape and flat

It's still worms.

Jay
1:52 PM
@Cerberus lol

What should I have said, then? Worm-like, wet noodles?
I repeat: I know what the noodles look like. That is not the issue.

Jay
lol you are fine, im just being pedantic

Haha all righty then.
You don't find Pho difficult to eat?

Jay
@Cerberus not at all. no more than any other noodle soup
although ive eaten it often enough to develops my pho eating skills
ive notice that other people dont eat the right proportion of soup to noodle
so that at the end they end up with either too much soup or too much noodle
i dont really pay attention but i always eat proportionally so that i have a good ratio of soup to noodle through the meal
I can see how eating pho with just a spoon might be difficult though

Tip of the Day: make your own pho by boiling spaghetti in Heinz Chicken Noodle Soup and adding a splash of soy sauce
<runs away>

Jay
1:56 PM
@ElendilTheTall I will Ctrl + Alt + Delete you!!!

try it, phool

Jay
@ElendilTheTall Theres no soy sauce in the broth. it would've been minusculely more accurate to say adding a splash of fish sauce
and perhaps a beef soup instead of chicken noodle

@Jay i know, I was being deliberately goofy

Jay
@ElendilTheTall no need to deliberately do it. You already naturely emit enough goof

@Jay G-waves

Jay
1:59 PM
btw what color is your hair again? blonde? dark blonde? brown? Gray?
