6:43 AM
I MUST LEARN FRENCH
And @ElendilTheTall, another good source for learning languages is uk.babbel.com

1 hour later…
7:51 AM
@Gigili Bummer
@Gigili Wanna great reason to learn French? This is gorgeous:
It also goes to show how badly Disney treated the novel.

@Gigili thanks, I'll check it out

Tall! :)

jojo!
what's the happy haps?

I just got up and it's exactly midnight.
This is behavior that is not encouraged by my family.

there's that rebellious streak again

8:02 AM
It's a good thing they are 3000 miles away.

have you tried putting a blanket over your cage?

hehehehee
did you look up enough to see what I got in the mail today??

sodium bisulfate?
is this for avocado part deux?

woohoo!!
More avocado experimentation!!
In high school, how popular do think I was when we picked lab partners??

you do need a pet
having said that, perhaps it's better you don't have access to animals :P
'Look, I crossed my chihuahua with a tomato plant!'

8:08 AM
On that day I was more popular than my sister!! :)
HA!

'now i get tiny, annoying tomatoes!'

heeheehee
Speaking of my sister: How cliche is this?
She has a 1 pound Yorkshire Terrier.

does she carry it in her purse?

You call that a dog??
yes

does she wear enormous sunglasses?

8:13 AM
she has been known to!

is she ridiculously wealthy?

She just moved back to Des Moines. Dad bought her a condo (long story) to get her out of his house.
She lived in LA for years. She was ridiculously wealthy for a while when she was married to a billionaire.
That's with a B, and I'm not exaggerating.
When I remember his name, I'll Google him.

didn't she get a massive cut when they divorced?

Not big enough. They weren't married long and they had a pre-nup.

ah
my next question was going to be does she like British accents, but if she's not loaded... ;)

8:19 AM
She may have gotten a few hundred thousand, but she could spend that in the blink of an eye.

couldn't we all?

This is how loaded her husband was. During her heyday, Julie was a very successful model. At one point she had a kind of scary stalker.
Her husband got his security guy to wipe the internet of her.
It is harder than hell to find any mention of her anywhere.
It took days just to find that commercial on YouTube.

commercial?
also, it is more or less impossible to wipe anything from the internet

The only reason it survived the great wipe is because it's part of a compilation.
You would think so, wouldn't you...
Are you there so I can send a message then quickly delete??

yeah
shoot
gotcha

8:25 AM
You haven't seen the commercial??
With the dude from Seinfeld?

nope
what does she do these days? does she still model?

Na way!! Hold on, brb
Nope, the years have not been kind to her skin. She still has an amazing body, but her modeling career is over.

is she blonde, by any chance?

there she is

redacted

8:31 AM
Yep.

front page of Google - her husband needs to get his money back :)

You can find recent stuff with her

she was wiped maybe 15 years ago.

there's either an old photo of her on her site, or it's majorly photoshopped

8:32 AM
show me

oh
no wait, wrong blonde :)
well, she's pretty in an obvious kind of way
:D

there's a somewhat recent thing in a magazine, some compilation of fashion advice.
Very, very photoshopped
Art is the first name of the husband. I'm getting there.
He gave us (the family) a tour of his jet once.
The walls were covered on suede.

how nice of him
that would be a bitch to clean

@Jolenealaska A tour IN his jet, to somewhere, would have been nice. Showing it off like a museum... ugh.
and hello @jolene and @elendil

And he had an office in the back:
hi rummi! :)

8:39 AM
@rumtscho hello there
wie gehts?

The office had a desk so big that the jet had to be taken apart to get it in.

@ElendilTheTall danke, gut
@Jolenealaska why not take the desk apart?

One big piece, I guess <shrug>

I doubt it was an ikea flat pack

It was just part of the tour

8:40 AM
it was probably made from compressed condor beaks

I didn't know that trees grew in pieces which are larger in all dimensions than a jet door

Dad said, "That's how the other .00001% live."

you could have told him he obviously got too small a jet if the desk wouldn't fit through the door :)

Obviously!

@Jolenealaska If I was one of them, I'd live like that too. No sense having the money and not treating yourself.

8:43 AM
Damn, I wish I could remember his last name...I'll ask next time I call home.

But I'd skip the one-pound-dog. A dalmatian is a good show off dog, and reasonably sized.

me too! Yappy little thing!
Have you seen the dog puppet video I uploaded last night?

are dalmatians nice dogs, character wise? I have had contact with cocker spaniels, they are very friendl, but also a bit dim and too laid back.
@Jolenealaska I saw the guilty dog video, but it bored me after the first third.

Cockers are the #1 (by far) biters of veterinarians.

The idea was nice, but I guess the whole length is meant for people who can't get enough of dogs.
@Jolenealaska really? why?

8:46 AM
@Jolenealaska I read that as vegetarians at first.

Dalmations can be great dogs, a lot of them are a bit overly high strung.

If I ever get a dog, I'll probably go to the animal shelter and get a mongrel. No need to support puppy mills with buying adorable pure bloods.

surely you would build a robot dog?
K-9

@ElendilTheTall I don't have K-9 any more, my smartphone died :(

oh dear

8:50 AM
I can't really explain the Cocker thing except to say that historically they were very, very over-bred just after one won the Westminster dog show 2 years in a row. It ruined the breed. Get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel instead.

Yes, this picture pushes my cuteness buttons.

But still, I don't think I want a "I'm a little princess" dog. It would have been my choice if I had gotten a dog when I was 11.

Personally, I love Border Collies.

I have seriously been thinking about a pet lately, but the terms of my lease don't allow it :( It's one more thing which has to wait for the damn dissertation.

8:53 AM
don't king charles' have problems with their ears?

All floppy eared dogs have ear issues

all the more reason to get a cat :D

@Jolenealaska really? What kind of issues?

Grrr international copyright issues and so on... can't see the video.

8:55 AM
Just a lot of infections due to build-up of yeast or bacteria. Some dogs always have ear infections.
Darn it- That's a good one.

if my aunt's cocker did, I didn't notice. Probably my aunt never noticed either.

Border Collies can be amazingly trainable.

I have a phd-colleague who got a border collie puppy. She's crazy about it, treats it like a child.

They're almost that damn smart.

@rumtscho cough proxy cough

8:58 AM
There's a great joke: I'll try to find it...it's too much to type.

Now she has to move to another city, where she will live alone (she had a flatmate here). She has been commuting 150 km per day because she hasn't found yet a place which means all her other requirements and is close enough to her new workplace that she can go to the house in the lunch break so the dog won't spend 8 hours at once alone. (The dog is grown up now, not a puppy any more - back then they wouldn't leave it alone ever).

@rumtscho how long to go till your dissertation is done?

@ElendilTheTall I wish I knew it. Once I get all results done, I can start writing it up. But the problem is that I'm at a very frustrating stage. I get something together, go to my supervisor. She says "not good, start over". Rinse, repeat. About 6-8 weeks per iteration.
But she is somehow incapable of telling me that my ideas are not good enough for her, she requires to see a result before saying it's not good enough.

tut
have you asked how she thinks you can improve it?

9:03 AM
Yes, I have. It doesn't work :(
I'm getting more and more done, but it's slow. Very slow.

If everything goes well, I'll have the text written and submitted by April. After that I will still need to defend it in an oral exam, but I will have the time to look for a new job then. And with a new job, I can move into a bigger flat.

then you can start looking at jets

But slowly, the April deadline starts looking unrealistic. It can be met still, but only if nothing unexpected pops up in the middle of it.
@ElendilTheTall On an entryish level salary? I said I'm looking for a new job, not for a billionaire to marry.

@rumtscho perhaps your priorities are wrong ;)
if you'd concentrated on marrying a billionaire first, you could have done dissertations at your leisure
with all the dogs and jets you could eat

9:08 AM
@ElendilTheTall I don't know. If marrying a billionaire requires me acquiring the habits and duties of a trophy wife, it's too high a price for the privilege of spending a few millions during the few years the marriage lasts. May also leave me with unhealthy spending habits for afterwards.

depends on the billionaire I guess
I'm sure you could find one who's attracted to intelligent Eastern Europeans
I think i'll have to try these
fried bread and cheese, what's not to like?

SAJ Would love those.

make some dips
they'd rock
my kid would love them
especially if I didn't roll them up all the way and made cheesy snails

@Jolenealaska haha, I just read your joke. I somehow overlooked it when you posted it, and now I saw the large picture. But I'm afraid I don't know dog races that well. I even don't know what all of the races mentioned look like, even less their character.
@ElendilTheTall these look good, yes.

really?
which ones didn't you know?

9:23 AM
It's funny 'cause it's so exactly dead on.

@ElendilTheTall afghan is a name I have heard, but don't know what it looks like. I've never heard of shi-tzu or malemute, or a springer spaniel. And I don't know what a mastiff looks like either.

Afghans are those big skinny ones with very long straight coats
malemutes are like big huskies
springer spaniels are your archetypal gun dogs
floppy ears
mastiffs are massive, with big droopy faces
shi-tzus are just plain cute
an afghan
malamute

My dad and his lovely trophy wife have a shih-tzu. The dumbest dog I've ever met.

springer
mastiffs (french, there are various sub-breeds)

@ElendilTheTall really? I couldn't recognize the difference between a springer and a cocker spaniel then.

9:29 AM

those are cockers

And I am a very, very bad person. I now want a coat made from Afghan pelt.

smaller, shorter legs essentially

@ElendilTheTall are these in your picture adult?

look like it to me

9:31 AM
I have the sneaking suspicion that my aunt had a springer spaniel for 15 years and thought she has a cocker spaniel

Springers are slightly less nuts.

@ElendilTheTall thank you for the explanation, I learned something today.

@rumtscho then my day has been worthwhile

@Jolenealaska in what sense are they nuts?
or do you mean they bite too?

excitable

9:33 AM
I have always imagined that the trethupe dogs are the ones who bite the most
I don't know the word for Trethupe in English
A "Hupe" is the thing which was once used for making a signal when you are on a bicycle, before you had bells. Now clowns use it. You press it and it makes a shrill tone.

little yappy dogs

I'm calling Cockers nuts 'cause they're so prone to bite. Springers are very excitable, but nicer.

a friend of mine had a springer that really lived up to the name, he would jump up to chest height to say hello
and my chest is pretty high

Yep :)

And the combination "Trethupe" suggests a Hupe which is not supposed to be pressed by hand, but trodden on in order to produce the sound.

9:36 AM
The only time I have met a malamute was while I was walking in the woods, turned a corner and there he was, growling, head down - for all intents and purposes a goddamn wolf in the middle of a British forest
owner trots up "you've just scared him, that's all"
I scared him?!
naturally, being British, I apologised and moved on

This is a Hupe.
@ElendilTheTall Poor you. But yes, I can imagine that he was also scared. Fight-or-flight instinct and all... guess which one a malamute will choose.

i am the very soul of affability
evidently I smelled dangerous
not unlikely - I do usually exude a hard edge of deadliness (as well as the aforementioned affability)
O.o
@rumtscho a book for you
@besw hello, by the way

[wave]

all well at the Pacific branch of Seasoned Advice?

Oh, yes.

9:45 AM
I just had a small fire in my kitchen

Last night I did a curry tofu scramble with seared bell peppers, served on a bed of rice and lentils.

@Jolenealaska are you ok?

It was excellent; I've finally figured out how to season tofu okay.

@BESW interesting

one tiny bit worse and I would have had to use the fire extinguisher,

9:46 AM
what made it a 'scramble'?

The tofu was crumbly bits, kinda like dryish scrambled egg.

Yep all is well

I fried it in a pan with onions and garlic, tossing and cutting with a pancake turner.

@BESW did you make copious roti? curry is nothing without masses of bread to eat it with
@Jolenealaska good. be more careful young lady! :P

@ElendilTheTall That's what the rice is for.

9:48 AM
At worst I ruined a pan and a under-burner thing-a-ma-bob

@BESW you can't scoop the curry up with rice!

@ElendilTheTall It's not a sauce.
Tofu doesn't take sauce well, at least not that I've figured out yet.
I put the spices and seasonings directly into the pan as I fried the tofu, so the tofu itself is the curry.
So you get a bowl with rice and lentils on the bottom and a heap of curried tofu and onions on top.

yes, tofu seems to repel liquids
well, now I'm hungry

The "wet" of the meal comes from the rice, not the curry.
Then tonight I was meeting with a client, so my mother baked sweet potato, regular potato, red bell pepper, carrots, and onions, to serve on the leftover rice and lentils.

have you been vegetarian your whole life?

9:57 AM
No, and I'm still not.
But my family cooks vegetarian-plus-fish for meals, for a wide variety of reasons.
I eat a lot less meat now than I used to, for health reasons, but we were doing veg+fish family meals long before that.

ah, that rings a bell
meat hard to come by/expensive on Guam

Depends on the kind of meat; fresh local non-fish meat is not readily available commercially.

@BESW you don't have animal farms?

Yes, but we don't have enough agricultural land to make animal farming commercially viable.
You can't get much fresh meat at the supermarket. You have to know a guy.

@BESW Interesting. I don't know much about population density in Guam, I would have imagined it like a place with few people and enough land for them to have lots of agriculture.

10:08 AM
We've got 160,000 people in less than 550km2 land, and a lot of the south half of the island is totally undeveloped.

320/km2 says Wikipedia, this is really a lot
Most of Europe doesn't get this much density

The upper half and middle is denser than that, and the lower half is a LOT sparser.

if you are looking at county-analogues statistics of course, the major cities have more.

You get family farms and "ranches" in the south, and everyone who has any arable land--even just their yard--grows something to eat or keeps a few chickens or pigs.
But the farmers who are commercially viable are growing crops, not raising animals for slaughter.

My pork buns that didn't make the contest cut:

10:13 AM
Nice. Very colourful!

pretty yummy too!
next year they'll be entered

@Jolenealaska they look good. And I'm glad you didn't have much damage from the fire, it scared me a little when I read it

It was a bit scary for about 10 seconds.
Alaska population density: 0.46 /km2
Half a person per square kilometer!

That must be awkward. You have to walk a kilometre to give yourself a hand.

10:22 AM

Is there anyway to make these legible??
They'd be pretty funny shots for my avocado experiment.
Do not try this at home!

10:44 AM
Seriously though, I'll try but I doubt I'll be able to do much. It's not really my bailiwick.

@Jolenealaska use a tripod. If you don't have one, put the camera on a pile of books.
@BESW I think it's easier to help her take a better picture than to repair an out of focus image

Agreed.

Ah! That's what it is! I couldn't remember how I got that salt label legible. I used books. D'oh!
aarrgggh
now it won't focus! It keeps saying it can't! It has a piss poor attitude.

11:01 AM
not enough light, or too close
lenses have a minimum focus distance, and the ones with a very short one are extremely expensive

I'll try it outside when it gets light out. Right now it's just frustrating me.

@Jolenealaska another idea I had after you submitted your sandwich recipe

I've got pretty much exactly the same conditions now.
Yeah??

we can't fly Elendil to Alaska for your next submission, but next year he or I can make your sandwiches and take a picture here.

Ooh! Great idea!

11:05 AM
It also gives you a test eater

yeppers! :)

Which is a bit of "cheating" in the sense that we will have to use our local olives brand, not Mezzetta
but frankly, I always found these sponsored recipes silly, because they always work with food produced by another brand.

Yeah, I won't tell them I didn't buy their olive oil either :) I can send anything that's distinctive.

2 hours later…
1:33 PM
@Jolenealaska out of focus is out of focus hon

4 hours later…
5:59 PM
anyone here?

yes

Do you know anything about truffles?

:( nope

I think I might make a truffle risotto tonight. I cant think of what I want to serve with it.
Definitely a first world broblem.

6:32 PM
@Jolenealaska with it?
risotto should be eaten in heaping bowlfuls
there should be no room for anything else!

yeah...I'm thinking of cooking for CN. He loves mushrooms, so he should like truffles. I have .45 ounce of black truffle, so not enough to make huge bowls.

well in that case, just make mushroom risotto and use the truffles to boost it

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking. Dried porcinis and fresh criminis.

yeah
creme fraiche, lots of parmesan

With a small strip steak done in a Nasa hot cast iron pan.

6:39 PM
if you must

do you mix in the creme fraiche.

yah
at the end
when I make it, I go the whole hog and use my acidulated butter as well

do you mix in the creme fraiche?

Y.E.S
you're repeating yerself woman

acidulated butter?

6:41 PM
yup

The repeat message was supposed to be an edit...weirdness

adds an oniony, zingy hit
cuts through the creme fraiche and cheese

it doesn't say how much vinegar.
here we go:

Acidulated butter
265g sliced onions
500g ordinary dry white wine
500g ordinary white wine vinegar
665g unsalted butter, cubed and at room temperature
● Combine the onions, wine and vinegar in a deep pan and place over a moderate heat. Stirring regularly, cook th

6:49 PM
that's the one
he does an amazing savoury butter too
butter with ketchup, marmite, worcester sauce, cumin, smoked paprika, various others
freeze it in cubes and chuck it in chilli, meat sauce, you name it

Ha! Any other great purpose other than the risotto?

I'm sure you could find something :)

(for the acidulated)

anywhere you need a bit of zing

so it's just for the initial saute of the dry rice?

6:54 PM
no, it's for mounting

mounting?

stirring in at the end

so you'djust use regular butter in the beginning?

butter and olive oil, usually

Any particular mushroom risotto recipe a favorite?

6:55 PM
heston's :)
it's an umami bomb
shallots, garlic, creme fraiche or mascarpone, parmesan, fresh mushrooms, dried porcini, acidulated butter iirc
stock, naturally
and rice, of course

is it online?

it's not, but I can more or less remember it
it's risotto, it's always more or less the same
