@Jefromi reposting is bad, but editing an already closed pizza question into a cheesecake question is much worse
what they should have done is to post a cheesecake question without touching the pizza one
and so I prefer to encourage the posting of a new question on a new topic, rather than encourage their edit which left 0% of the original content of the question

1:17 AM
@rumtscho Oh, I did not read the edit history carefully enough, yuck.
Maybe we can just delete the first closed one and prevent dup-closure, since it was enough to even trick me?
I wish we could invalidate the dup close votes so that it can't essentially get closed as too broad with only three votes...

1:53 AM
@SAJ14SAJ Ah, yes, I have different renderings of that map.
Coke sounds really strange to me.
Pop I would not say either, but it's less weird.
I guess I say fizzy drink or soda?
But I don't drink such beverages.
In Dutch, it's frisdrank, "fresh drink".
Also odd.

10 hours later…
11:52 AM
Happy Friday, everyone.

2 hours later…
2:00 PM
@Jolenealaska Nicely done, direct, to the point.

Hmmpff.

@Jolenealaska Now you hate praise? Never mind then.

It's just not the kind of question that leads to editorializing.
Speaking of which, did you read my pizza answer after I edited it?

I am not sure I saw an edit to that.

It's somewhat less flowery.
10
A: Is our oven at work powerful enough to bake pizza?

JolenealaskaAbsolutely not. There are a lot of tricks to get good thick (or thin) pizza with oven temperatures under 300C (572F). The people at Serious Eats have researched the problem at great length and with excellent results. Few home ovens reach 300C. I made this pizza last weekend using the recipe in th...

3 hours later…
4:41 PM
@derobert I broke down. I ordered that Amazon Fire for $99. I figure it might be good for a kitchen TV, so I don't keep taking food into my office.

@SAJ14SAJ Wait, why'd you get that instead of a Roku?

Roku is icky? I don't know anything about Roku. :-) But you can play android games on the Fire. And then I can friend myself and send myself gems in Dragonvale, since I have no real friends.

LOL

Plus, with pretty good (for android) processing power, I am hoping it will improve over time.
The only three streaming services I care about are Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon, and they are all covered so... there you have it.

They are on a Roku too. And a lot more. But yeah, if you want to run Android apps, a Roku doesn't do that.

4:45 PM
I tried downloading android emulators, but they are terrible, terrible.
I should still try the real dev kit one, but I suspect it is more than trivial to set up.

No, the dev kit one is fairly easy to set up

I will probably try it tonight during tv watching time. Need my Greys Anatomy fix, which is so sad.

in the dev kit, you go to Manage AVDs, then click new...
I wouldn't call it fast, though!

But does it have the play thing to download applications?

Ummm... not sure. Let me check.

4:47 PM
This is my hot new i5-4th gen box! With 16 gb! If it cannot emulate android, what can?

well, my brand new virtual nexus 4 is booting

Cool :-)
They are chintzy, with the device though. It doesn't pack with an HDMI cable.

doesn't seem to be a Play Store on it. Guess I'd have to load it...

I tried that on one of the other emulators. It seemed to install easily, you just dragged the zip over the window.
And all of the andoithingies showed up.
But no matter what I did, the play store said "no connection."
Even though I was browsing.
So I gave up on that emulator.
Another emulator, you didn't need it, but Dragonvale wouldn't run at all.
So that one I gave up on.
Because, after all, how much effort am I going to put in in emulating a free to play game so I can give myself free stuff I am too cheap to buy :-)

lol

4:56 PM
On the other hand, maybe Android is fun to develop for..
All I need to do is think of a killer app that at least, say, 10 people would want.
Cat Of the Day :-) Its probably been done.

LOL
You could try Flappy Cats

@derobert Never heard of it.

Surely you heard of Flappy Bird during its several-day-long 15 minutes of fame?

Erm... no?
Is that like this Angry Bird thing I keep hearing about, which now seems to be borged by Star Wars?
I actually tried it for 5 minutes. What a horrible, irritating, not fun game.

No, quite different

4:59 PM
It got uninstalled.

5:55 PM
Have y'all played Threes?
The cat has, but didn't like it, I recall.

@SAJ14SAJ I tried to show you up on the tomato size question!

@Jefromi I am happy with my imaginary fruit-based standard. We know the USDA portion sizes are crazy anyway :-)

Yeah, that's pretty much how I judge them too.
Wait, what, a large onion is only 150g?

We all know onions don't come in grams! They are weighed in stone!

It doesn't have a diameter, but medium is 2.5" so large must be ~3", and I swear those things weigh a lot more than 1/3 pound...

6:05 PM
3" doesn't even seem that large for an onion.

It looks like the person who asked this question thinks "statistics" is a mountain in Antarctida

I tried to give benefit of the doubt and create a real question out of the legoland thing...

Anybody who knows what the term "expected value of the mean" means will know that the answer to the question is completely useless for all practical kitchen purposes

The same user has posted a few pretty, uh, questionable questions on other sites.

@Jefromi What legoland thingy?

i don't get the legoland reference.
Oh, never mnd, way at the bottom.
That makes no sense.
You are far to generous, if I had noticed that I would be saying we need Not a Real Question back!

That's just odd.

6:32 PM
"unclear what you're asking" generally fits the not a real question ones anyways
"It's unclear what you're asking, because you seem to be asking something nonsensical and obviously that couldn't be the case..."
Also, for cooking ground meat: pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/…
My grandmother discovered this recently and got everyone one.

@Jolenealaska New research on cannabis use, just published: a higher percentage of THC does not result in more addiction, or barely. A higher frequency doesn't result in more addiction either.
Peggy van der Pol will defend her dissertation next week based on this research project.

@Jefromi Like holy unnecessary expense, batman!
@Jefromi Off topic because you are clearly to stupid to live?

Haha, yeah, I dunno, it's a fun gift I guess - haven't quite figured out much to do with it yet.

Not you.

@Cerberus It's almost completely non-addictive, at least physically. Some people do become psychologically addicted, but even that's rare.

6:37 PM
In my tiny new apartment kitchen, I am ruthlessly moving out all of the items I don't use regularly. I just don't see what utility that would have that the edge of a spoon doesn't.

@Jolenealaska Yes, they do point out actual causes of addiction.
Mainly financial and other personal problems.

@SAJ14SAJ For ground meat it's definitely way way better than a spoon or spatula edge or anything, just because it has more edges, it doesn't take nearly as long to break things down.
I don't know if that really makes it worth keeping around but

Yep, if you're spending money on pot and neglecting your bills, it's an issue.

That has never really been something I have considered a problem, but then I don't use ground chicken.
@Jolenealaska But I need a Gold Plated Le Creuset pot!

I don't do a lot of ground meat either, the biggest thing for me is sausage and eggs, where I do kinda like the sausage small enough to mix in.

6:40 PM
For $300 per, they might as well be gold plated!

@Jefromi That does take a couple of minutes with the spoon. The trick for me is to let it cook a little, then you can mash and crumble pretty easily. Trying to do it when it is completely raw is futile, and fully cooked is too late.

The water trick works just fine!

Yup, didn't know about the water trick before.

@Jolenealaska Water trick is just wrong. Poached ground chicken. But I imagine if you are using ground chicken, you don't care.

You can't tell the difference once it's browned.

6:42 PM
It does sound kinda prone to overcooking - get it fully cooked with just the water, then brown from there...

AGain, ground chicken. Universe collectively wonders why?
I cannot think of any application for ground chicken that would not be better served by another chicken form factor, like poached and shredded, or or roasted and shredded, or cut up in chunks, or substituting cows.

I do use ground chicken upon occasion, but I grind it myself in a food processor.

@Jolenealaska I think what they mean is that people who have financial problems, regardless of the source, are more likely to "escape" into a pot addiction (or any other addiction, like alcohol).

There've definitely been studies (don't have a citation on hand sorry) that suggest exactly that - self-medicating, escaping, filling time, and so on. I think they tried to give drug "addicts" another option and found that they were quite ready to take it over more drugs, not what you'd expect from someone desperately addicted.

Yeah...
But the problem is also that, once you are psychologically addicted to drugs, your actual problems tend to get worse because of that: if you're stoned/drunk all day and spend lots of money on drugs, that is unlikely to improve your situation.
At least tobacco does not alter your mood, it merely causes cancer in the long run.

6:50 PM
But it is hideously addictive.

Speaking of which, I bought 5 bottles of pretty good Alsacian (spelling?) wine for about 30 % of the normal price.

Cerbling, don't you still have more beer than you could drink?

@Jolenealaska Yes, for those who are susceptible to the addictive effect. I know plenty of people who are not.
@SAJ14SAJ I do! I have a full crate!

@Cerberus And now you have a surfeit of wine?

I'm not a huge fan of white wine anyway, but, if I drink it, I prefer it to be very sec, like Alsacian.

6:52 PM
Isn't nicotine considering mood altering?

Yes, well, I will serve the wine to guests and bring it to dinner parties as a present.
@SAJ14SAJ I would say yes, but only a little bit.

Are you a smoker?

It does not impair normal thinking.

I never have o I have no experience with this.

I cook with wine, but I've never developed a taste for drinking it. I don't like beer either.

6:53 PM
No, I have never smoked or used any drugs except alcohol.

Most people don't need any impairment to their normal thinking!
They come, as it were, pre-impaired!

@Jolenealaska Very wholesome!
@SAJ14SAJ Quite!

I do like bourbon.

When was the last time I drank alcohol, let me think...
Sunday, my 1.5 glass of wine, the small glasses we talked about, remember?
@Jolenealaska Ah there you go!
By the way, did you know that spirits have a higher chance of causing certain kinds of cancer than lower-% drinks?
Oesophageal, I think.
Or doesn't whiskey count as a spirit?

I bought a single beer to make bread a few days ago. I thought I'd at least finish it, but I didn't. That doesn't surprise me. (the cancer thing) Yes, whiskey is a spirit.

6:57 PM
Right.

@Cerberus Ve are vatching you.

We're lucky to not be very susceptible to addiction, I guess.
@SAJ14SAJ Noo not the NStAsi!

I just got out my old iPod 32 to see if I can assist myself in Dragonvale.
It is so TINY.
I cannot believe I ever played with it.

Assist?

Send myself free presents, as a pretend friend.

7:00 PM
Ah.

If any of you are addicted to Dragonvale, two questions: what, are we stupid, or what? And, do you want to be my friend?

Hah.
Is it fun?
I don't normally play multiplayer.

It has a lot of people on Arqade talking about it. I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it.

Same.

@Cerberus It shouldn't be fun, but it is a nice distractor from time to time. It is not really multiplayer.
But the gimick is the hardest to come by currency is something you can send to someone else for free once a day.
So then hopefully they send it back.

7:05 PM
Hmm.
What genre is it?

I don't know, dragon breeding?
Slow games that make you wait for stuff to mature?
Free to play with obnoxious ability to buy stuff for real money?
Which I NEVER do.

Hmm I think I know the genre.
Like Farmville?
Which I've never played either.

I have never played farmville.

I have a strange and unrelated question.
Do paedophiles whose faces you have seen look strange to you?

@Cerberus I wouldn't know. How do I know if I have met any?

7:10 PM
I have seen two, and they both look really unhealthy, skinny, maybe inbred.
Well, there is this guy from the Paedophile Society who was on the news today.
(It was banned today by the High Council, the highest court below the European courts.)
It's probably a coincidence.

It worked, I am my own cross-platform friend.
I have given me a gem!

Congratulations, Intellectual-Property infringer!
Not that I think that's wrong...

I haven't done anything wrong.
i downloaded a free to play game to two different devices, and configured it according to its rules!

I'm sure you've violated the terms of service that you "agreed" on hehe.

I made a decision some years ago not to read those things. The only change in my life is saving many many hours.

7:21 PM
This could even be a felony under the CFAA, I think.

I don't know what that is.

Yeah nobody reads those things.
Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
But don't worry, nobody is going to care.

I will put the second account in my cat's name, so it is all good. Which one of them do you think wants to play, the black and white or the maine coon?

Haha.
I imagine the Maine Coon might get jealous of the dragons?

@Jefromi "In general, in most jurisdictions, the calories would be based on the edible portion (or the commonly eaten portion), so oranges without the peel, nuts without the shell." But before I edited it it went on to say "... idiots without the blather."
But I may be feeling uncharitable today.

7:25 PM
@SAJ14SAJ Haha, I think you might be.

@Cerberus She would pounce them, they are only a few inches high.
And that is zoomed in on the 7" nexus.

@Jefromi I'm almost at my 50,000th search in my Google history. Do I get a prize when I hit 50k?

@derobert How do you know that?

I imagine I have more anonymous searches than authenticated ones.
I almost always search from the address bar, or by right clicking text in line.

7:27 PM
Wow, that's a lot, I'm only at around 52k total between work and personal accounts, not sure if I had it enabled the whole time though.
@SAJ14SAJ If you're logged in and have web history enabled, it doesn't matter how you ran the query, it's a query as you.

@SAJ14SAJ if you're logged in, they'll count

Well, if you have to opt in, I never did.

I honestly don't remember what the default is for that one.

@SAJ14SAJ if you visit that link, it'll tell you if you're opted in or not (and also let you change it)

I think if you disable it you won't get some of the personalized search stuff though? I forget that too...

7:29 PM
The first thing it ofcfers is a chance to turn it on, so I think you have to opt in.

"Turning off your search history may limit or disable features such as Google Now, smarter search results and predictions, and recent searches on mobile devices."

The only personalization I have ever noticed is geographical.

The most obvious search personalization is if you have a query that you use a lot, it'll promote the result that you click on, with an annotation.

@SAJ14SAJ So she would be a good player?

@Cerberus Probably, as most of the game involves waiting, and she is really, really preternaturally good at sleeping.

7:31 PM
@derobert It says I have search history turned off, yay!

@SAJ14SAJ That's what Miracast is for...

@SAJ14SAJ Cats are masters of waiting!
@SAJ14SAJ I once had to turn it off, so I think it's on by default? Is it possible that you turned it off in the past?

@Cerberus Seems unlikely, but who knows?

Who, indeed?
I used Google Now for a while, don't remember why.
It didn't do much that was useful to me.

If all the bad guys in the world were as stupid as these, we'd have the best world ever

7:33 PM
Have they added more useful stuff in the mean time?

@Cerberus never heard of it.

Hello, Rummy. We may be stupid, but are we really bad?

@Cerberus Well, it can't do half the stuff it tries to do if you don't have web history on... but yeah, it's currently I think useful if you have some kinds of interests or tasks, not as much if you don't.

For the last 1-2 weeks, some bot consistently suggests edits which replace a whole answer with spam

@SAJ14SAJ An Android thing.

7:34 PM
Doesn't google know the only thing we want from them is search, mail, and reader, and they failed us already on the last one.

and because they do it from an anonymous user account, it never sees the light of day

@rumtscho Is that new?

@SAJ14SAJ music is nice

it is not exactly a secret that on Stack Exchange sites, the edits get approved by a human, not by a machine spam filter

@Jefromi I think I had it turned on then. But I can't really think of anything that it could do for me that's faster than the way I use my phone now, but I may be mistaken.

7:35 PM
but whoever spent the energy to write the bot didn't spend any energy to research that fact
@SAJ14SAJ it happens very frequently now.

@rumtscho Hilarious!

@Jefromi Google Now has started informing me of new meta.Unix.SE posts

On SE there are probably 5 iditots will approve the edit clicking within nanoseconds.

Perhaps because you see your own edit (but others do not)?

Right after they post their homework questions.

7:36 PM
Those people have enough reps?

Which is actually useful, because otherwise I miss them...

Yeah, I dunno, honestly it's really hard for me to keep track of which features are released and which aren't, so I'm trying to make sure before I say things...

@SAJ14SAJ I think that even the quickest people will have a doubt when they see that 100% of the original text is being replaced

It does what @derobert just said (if you have sufficient history stuff enabled), knowing sites that you frequent and notifying you about new posts on them.

@Jefromi What are its most useful features for you, like things that save you time?

7:36 PM
@SAJ14SAJ this kind never gathers enough rep to approve others' edits

@rumtscho You can rarely go wrong by overestimating stupidity.
@rumtscho Now that is a better argument :-)

@Jefromi New posts...but the sites I read have dozens of new posts every day, and I go to their pages anyway.

But I know at least one on our site who falls in the category, and approves edits.
Not naming any names.

@Cerberus Not saying that's useful to everyone, just starting to list features.

But I don't want to get into "OMG your thing is not useful for meee because I use my phone differently!".
Yeah OK.

7:37 PM
hm, saving time... sports scores, if you're into that; calendar/reminder type stuff, including smart cards that are able to pick up fresh information, like 'with current traffic, it'll take you 45 minutes to get there'

Okay.

links to directions for stuff like that

CAn it predict lime futures in time for us to stock up?

@Jefromi I use the reminders all the time. Though they're somewhat broken when you have multiple devices

@Jefromi Is it different from tapping your caldendar widget and tapping on the location to get directions? Is it faster?
@derobert What kind of reminders?

7:39 PM
@Jefromi In particular, it pops up on all devices, you say 'remind me in an hour' or 'remind me tomorrow' on one device

@Cerberus The thing is, it combines a lot of stuff, so you don't have to remember which app, you don't have to remember that you have an event to go check for.

@Jefromi the reminder stays in the notification bar of all the other devices

@Jefromi Hmm how should I imagine this?

not exactly saving time, but sometimes helpful: articles related to things that you've searched for recently, nearby interesting stuff, movie showtimes for later, etc

When I have an event, I get a notification from my calendar app?

7:40 PM
@Jefromi you can't dismiss it from the other devices, because that'll clear the reminder. If you say 'remind me in a day' (etc) on the other devices, it changes the reminder time again... sometimes adding an extra hour/day, sometimes just setting to a day/hour from now
The only way to clear it I've found is to reboot the device.

@Jefromi OK noted.

@derobert Ick, haven't seen that.
Right, but you get it at a scheduled reminder time. This is like, well, I just want to check what's up right now... oh, there's that thing in an hour and oh I only have 15 minutes before I need to leave.

@Jefromi log two or more devices into the same account, set yourself a reminder in an hour, you should see it. At least, happens every time for me. All the devices are Nexus ones running latest stock

@Jefromi So is this in case you often have appointments that you have no idea how far away they are?

@derobert Yeah, by haven't seen it I mean I don't use multiple devices.

7:43 PM
Like, several irregular business meetings a day at different locations, like in different cities or neighbourhoods?

@Cerberus I dunno, I have a dinner thing tonight and it was helpful to see the reminder when I glanced earlier.

@Jefromi I'm surprised they haven't force-fed you a tablet or two....

I think generally the more busy you are the more useful it is?

@Jefromi Because you didn't know where the street was at all, something like that?

No, I mean, it's like hey this is happening, so you're going to have to leave work at this time
and not just for calendar stuff, it can pull things from gmail if you let it, like flight info

7:45 PM
So it is like, it automatically sets a reminder? I do that by hand if needed, I must admit.

@Jefromi Though Google needs to work on its reminders. For some reason, they added another set of fully independent reminders in Google Keep.

So, an example of saving time: not having to do things by hand.
@derobert Yeah, not saying things aren't weird in some places..... this is just the general idea of what it's supposed to do.

@rumtscho Thankfully there is this warning: Our system has identified this edit as possible spam; please review carefully

@Cerberus yes, but when you do it by hand, it can't change because there is a traffic jam / train broke down / etc., and now you need to leave 15 minutes earlier.

@derobert I thought maybe calendar events with location added to them did smart stuff?

7:47 PM
For example, when I go to one of my jobs, I need 15 minutes to get there, but also 15 minutes of preparation, like maybe doing my hair or getting my stuff. So I just have a weekly entry in my calendar with a reminder 30 minutes before.

@Jefromi through Google Now only, I think...

@derobert Right, duh.
@Cerberus This isn't really for "time to go to work", I think most people do fine with that.

@derobert Right, I see. I suppose that could be useful if you often go by car or train.

More for irregular stuff, especially stuff where you're less likely to be keeping track of exactly when you need to leave.

I set a reminder for an irregular appointment by hand if I think I need it. But how does Google know how much time I need between being reminded and stepping out the door?

7:49 PM
@Cerberus GOOGLE KNOWS ALL.
Of course, it doesn't—it just tells you when you need to step out the door.

DOES IT
@derobert But then it's too late.

@Cerberus Yes, that's why the NSA wants to spy on it so much.

Doesn't it automatically add some number of minutes based on past behaviour?
@derobert TRUE
I think 90 % of those features, like those related to spending money and pop culture, would be useless to me, but I might like to use it for the 10 %. If only it could do that offline, I might start using it again.

@Cerberus Again, it is of course possible to do everything by hand, but the point here is that if it knows time and location, it tries to intelligently figure things out for you.
And it's something like, bzzz, you need to leave at this time to make it, 10-15 minutes ahead of time or something.

Okay, is that a fixed number of minutes?

7:52 PM
And notifications aside, it'll start showing up in google now if you go look at it sometime before as well.
I have no idea.

I guess maybe 10 minutes would be enough in most cases.
But, if it's important, I would want full control.
And when I'm setting the appointment anyway...

It's basically always enough ahead of time for me, unless it's like... it thinks I'm driving and I'm actually going to bike, or I need to go run these 5 errands before I go, or whatever.
If you want full control of every single detail, no, it is not for you.
That's kind of orthogonal to whether it's in general useful, though.

Depends on the appointment, I guess.
So how does it know whether you will be going by bike or by tram or whatever?
Do you set that when you set the appointment?
I would probably be scared it might use the wrong method if it did this automatically?

You can set a general preference... if you go back and forth a lot it's not super ideal.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Amazon just added GI Joe to free streaming movies. How can we resist?

7:56 PM
@Jefromi Oh, I do that...
Still, it often takes about as long both methods.
So the warning might still come in time.

Yeah, I think most people (especially in the US) have a primary mode so it'll be generally useful for a lot of people.
And then for me, I do bike a lot and drive for longer things, but generally the things I'm biking for I'm not as worried about reminders anyway, so...

Cerberatticus, your phone cannot live your life for you. :-)

For me, it depends on whether my bike has been stolen again, the weather, time of year, time of day, day of the week, and maybe caprice hehe.
@SAJ14SAJ Alas! But perhaps it could do so for 10 %.
Is there a version of Google Now that works offline?
Perhaps an Xposed mod?

.. that one?

That an Xposed mod?

7:59 PM
@Cerberus Yes, definitely an Xposed mod.

Looks odd, for an Xposed mod.
I didn't know they had those on Youtube.
I'm clicking it, but it won't install?
Do I need to play it on my phone or something?

@Cerberus Yeah, you can't install an Xposed mod on your Windows desktop, right?

@derobert Why not!!
I want.

@Cerberus maybe if you write an AutoHotKey macro for it...

Yay!

8:11 PM
Just map <kbd>c</kbd> to play cobra! c ooohhh braaaa! and it'll be OK

But now I seriously wonder whether we can set up Google Now offline.
@derobert OK OK will do.
I can't find anything.

Anyway, time to go home. Good luck searching for your Google Now Offline.

@derobert I'm searching, but www.google.com says "page not found, no Internet connection".
Offline Internet doesn't work!!

@Cerberus gasp

8:34 PM
Yeah it's weird.
