12:01 AM
@rawbrawb yes, that.

12:17 AM
@anorton Yo!

1:00 AM
Could I make a PWM current with a voltage (say 5V) and a cap?

1 hour later…
2:17 AM
@coding_corgi PWM current?
I believe you might be trying to make an analog output by using a PWM voltage signal and a low pass filter?
If that is the case then yes, you can do that easily by choosing your PWM frequency and designing the filter cut-off well below said frequency. Then it will average your PWM voltage and give you an analog voltage. But you need (at least) a resistor and a capacitor to make the low pass filter.

@NickHalden He's driving a fan.

@NickHalden Nevermind, thanks though, my stupid motors are broken

@coding_corgi Yeah, stupid motors! :)

@DavidKessner oooohhhh, so is he looking for a variac then?

@DavidKessner Yes I am! I wanna Bugatti or a Rolls, mebe a Lambo....
@DavidKessner Yes, I got them from a stupid broken RC car, from china (no offense chinese people)!

2:25 AM
@coding_corgi It happens. Especially when scavenging for parts.

@DavidKessner No need to tell me.... I tried hacking a Telsla, tried to get some cool parts from it, failed though! :] That would be awful!
@DavidKessner Oh stupid me! God I feel stupid! I didn't read your msg thoroughly! I thought you said: He is a driving fan. Not: He is driving a fan!
No wonder the room got so quite when I talked about cars!

@coding_corgi Ha!

I once got an awesome battery pack (from an RC remote control), I plugged it in, then came back 30 min later and my batteries were super hot, I looked at my circuit, my voltage reg, was backwards! That was about a month ago...
tag:idiotic
@rawbrawb that did not work! :]

@coding_corgi yeah I'm trying get the angelatlarges fake tags working he says but ...

@rawbrawb You figured it out!

2:34 AM
oooh, is does work

@rawbrawb How how how?!

I like @DavidKessner idea of fake question

@rawbrawb They are quite entertaining, I bet most of the are real

@coding_corgi square bracket tag:your-tag end square bracket

@rawbrawb Thanks!

2:35 AM
Hey it worked!

How do I stop twitching on the ground when I electrocute myself?

@rawbrawb Simple. Up The Voltage!

:9664601 nope, still does

@rawbrawb
Ok now I can...
No not really, yet that sounded weird...
It's kind of creepy when people join the chat room, never talk, and just stalk around...

@DavidKessner shouldn't that be

@rawbrawb Yes, except that I'm too tired to spell that correctly.

Shoot, that didn't work

@rawbrawb Shut up

methinks the exclamation mark is not allowed

2:40 AM
@rawbrawb uh oh
[tag:!]
You tinks right

[tag:\!]
I guess escape sequences are not allowed either.

@rawbrawb I'll vote for that.

2:42 AM
@rawbrawb You starred yourself?!?!?!

@DavidKessner you're not to tired to come up with a good zinger though.

@rawbrawb Ha ha!

@DavidKessner Uuuum NO, not possible

@rawbrawb I can do that in my sleep. And usually do.

Actually, I left for dinner and a grocery store visit! :D

I then watched an episode of NUMB3RS (I don't like it for the fake-math nature of it, but I do sometimes like the storyline. I treat it like sci-fi... cool, but not within reach just yet.), and soldered my first set of headers onto an LCD!

2:43 AM
@rawbrawb Dat vas me

@DavidKessner maybe in my own movie!
see ya later guys, goota burn ...

@rawbrawb Sorry. I misread things. I'll stick to zingers.
Bye, @rawbrawb

@anorton Wow! Great job! You were busy,

Bye, rawbrawb!
@coding_corgi :) Well... it was nearly 5 hours.
Now just to make sure my solder holds.

@anorton <jk>You are a math nerd, gEEk!</jk>

2:45 AM
:D

@anorton It will hold on, as long as the metal pads on the PCB stay on, (in my experience)
@anorton Did you tin your tip?
@anorton If freezes in like two seconds, it is so magical!
Good night everyone!

Well... yeah. There's just one joint that looks a little sketchy. Re: tinning tip: I did the best I could--I got the very tip of the tip, but I couldn't get the rest of it--the solder kept beading up. I've gotta get some flux
Goodnight? :(
Oh well... see ya. :)

@coding_corgi 'Nite.
@anorton Flux is king when it comes to soldering. I won't solder without some.

@DavidKessner yeah... I was watching some of the youtube tutorials on soldering, and most seemed to rely on the flux in the core of the solder, unless they were doing something odd like SMD. After trying it, I think I'll find some flux... :)
Do you know what type of store flux would be sold in? I don't know if there's any real electronics hobby shops near where I live.

@anorton I use liquid water soluble flux in a bottle with a needle-like tip. Works great, but one major downside is that it is conductive and must be cleaned off.
@anorton Yeah, you need an electronics hobby shop or buy online.

2:57 AM
hmmm... ok. Thanks! :)

Don't use flux from Home Depot, sold in the plumbing section. That stuff is acid-based and will eventually destroy electronics that it's used on.
I've also used this. It works, but I prefer the bottle w/needle tip. amzn.com/B008OC24EQ

@DavidKessner Thanks for the tip--I'd probably have picked some of that up... :o
@DavidKessner thanks. I'll add that to my next amazon order. :)
(or the bottle if I can find it)

@anorton Here is the empty bottle: amzn.com/B0058AW1AE

Hmmm... I like the refillable nature of this one as opposed to the pen...

@anorton Sometimes the tip gets clogged. Use a wire-wrap wire (30 awg) to unclog the tip.

3:05 AM
ok

I can't find the flux that I use. It is made by Kester, and unfortunately sold by the gallon. This is the closest I could find. I should mention that flux does get too old, and there is no way you can work through a gallon in less than 5 years (and it usually goes bad after 2). amzn.com/B00023EDNU
Damn, now I'm annoyed. I need to get more flux for the lab, and I can't find what I like...

Thanks for the help! It's getting late over here, so I guess I'll follow corgi's lead in saying "goodnight!" :)

@anorton Good night.
@anorton Here it is! It is expensive by the gallon. Find lots of friends to go in on it with you. :) newark.com/kester-solder/63-0000-2235/liquid-flux/dp/34C5675

3:21 AM
@AnindoGhosh Good evening (or morning, or whatever).

@DavidKessner Morning. I won't know if it's good till I jumpstart the brain with some coffee. :-)

@AnindoGhosh It is 9:25pm here. I'm thinking about bed.

@DavidKessner Would that be because you're an early to bed person, or has it been a long day?

@AnindoGhosh My problem is that I'm a late-to-bed person, but I have to rise early too. After a while it catches up with me, like tonight, and now I'm just tired.

@DavidKessner awww...

3:51 AM
An "energy researcher" that asks a lot of basic electronics questions.

4:26 AM
@DavidKessner That's probably one of the "green brigade" - solving the earth's energy problems, one blown up 555 at a time.

@AnindoGhosh We had a big discussion about him a day or three ago. He caused a big mess that the mods had to clean up. He posted something about "scalar waves", and when I pointed out that if they existed at all then they would violate the known laws of physics. At that point he went non-linear, calling me every name under the sun. We're talking TS level of crazy.

@DavidKessner Ooooh I remember a reference to it on chat. Why do I always have to be away when the fun happens!

He also thinks that the normal scientific method is some sort of conspiracy.

@DavidKessner Was he also the person who posted some youtube video and asked "so how does this work, then?"

Fortunately he's calmed down quite a bit. I'll give him a chance.
@AnindoGhosh Yes, that's him. That was his "proof" that scalar waves is real.

4:33 AM
@DavidKessner Yes, I saw that question at 3 or 4 in the morning, decided I really didn't have the capacity to even be amused by it at that time.

@AnindoGhosh I answered it only so that I could work a Gilligan's Island reference into an answer. :)

@DavidKessner hahahaha

2 hours later…
6:19 AM
good morning
@AnindoGhosh did I miss all the good fun again?

hey guys, I am an EE student. I am having some trouble understanding why RL circuits dissipate more power as the resistance goes up, but RC circuits dissipate less power as the resistance goes up.
0
Q: Why do different resistor values dissipate power at different rates in RL and RC circuits?

BrandonPhysically what is happening here? RL My thoughts on this are that the inductor supplies a certain current, and current through a larger resistor dissipates more power. RC This one I'm not so sure about. I would say the same about voltage, but I think the current caused by this voltage will be ...

please check it out if you have time!

@Brandon You're leaving out important information there

that's interesting. could you tell me more?

@Brandon eg. where does the voltage/current come from (source) and what frequency it has.

6:31 AM
Hallo
@jippie yes :)

I can say that we are using ideal voltage sources connected to an RC loop through a switch
@jippie

@Brandon ah, maybe add a circuit diagram then. Just edit your question and hit Ctrl-M to open a circuit editor

@jippie, thanks for the info. I added an example RC. Hopefully that will help ppl understand my problem :)

@angelatlarge Hi

@jippie I don't know - I'm missing all the fun anyway, this last week or so. Today too, I'm off most of the day on a meeting. Hoping the meeting turns out productive, it's important for me.
Wish me luck, all. Will see you later!

6:44 AM
@AnindoGhosh Good luck sock master

@angelatlarge Thank you :-)

@AnindoGhosh Bye!

@AnindoGhosh enjoy

7:07 AM
@jippie Best for your mains frequency logger: edn-europe.com/en/…

yes, i think I will order couple of them

Is @DavidKessner related to Manti Te'o?

7:36 AM
I'm shopping for I2C repeaters: mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=PCA9517, why is the TI one 3x the price of the NXP one? am I missing something?
all I'm seeing is and extra 0.5v tolerance on the ios for the TI one

@StaceyAnne NXP is Dutch and the Dutch are "zuinig", you know that ;o)

7:52 AM
haha

@jippie lol
@StaceyAnne Yeah, its almost like the same thing, but it is double the price
I am checking Digi-Key prices

speaking of mouser vs digikey, do you generally find that the prices are the same for caps/resistors/discretes accross distributers?
or is it worth shopping around

@StaceyAnne Unfortunately, I can only check the prices of these distributors and imagine the day I could buy from them. Yeah, being an engineer in Turkey market sucks.
I cannot go out and say, oh, yeah, I am going to use this IC and optimize my design a lot!
No, instead an engineer in Turkey should say; "Oh, yeah, I will go and optimize my design so that it uses parts that I can find in the local market!"

@abdullahkahraman, I'm thinking of visiting Turkey for when I'm travelling around Europe next year

@StaceyAnne You may like it a lot, as I hear from other tourists. When are you planning to come?

8:08 AM
I'm going to be in europe from the end of december
not exactly sure about the order yet, in terms of which country we visit when. I'm probablyt going to try and stay somewhere where winter is a bit warmer for the first part of the year

@StaceyAnne Eww, why winter?

because I need to be out of my country for 10 months of the year
lol
or at least 6

8:25 AM
@StaceyAnne Did you commit a crime?

haha, no, I just don't pay taxes if I'm out of my home country for more than 6 months of the year

@StaceyAnne So, you say the taxes add up and meet the travelling expenses? Wow!

taxes cost a lot more than the travelling expenses, I pay my expenses for flights off with about ~3 months of taxes

@StaceyAnne That is a lot!

that together with spending less than I would have at home makes it definitely worth it

8:39 AM
@StaceyAnne What about your husband?

it works out about the same for him. my taxes pay off my flight, his pay off his flight. we don't think about it that way - we work it out together, but the numbers just essentially double

@StaceyAnne What about work?
Man, this is crazy!

we both work online. Adrian is a linux admin that makes sure webservers stay online all the time, I'm a hardware designer

@StaceyAnne Wait, I thought you were a software girl. Plus, how can you work online if you are a hardware designer?

I'm a firnware girl that got thrown into the deepend of board design with one of her clients

8:43 AM
Oh, wow, you travel and work at the same time, together, that is great!

my speciality is fw for FPGAs, I have my own devboard that I use to prototype code and it goes everywhere with me. My client asked me to design a cct for him
yeah. It's awesome. he's literally 5 ft away from me at all times. we're like coworkers.
I have literally spent 24/7 with my husband for the past 9 months
I think I can count on 1 hand the number of hours I've been more than speaking distance away

@StaceyAnne I don't get this sentence, forgive my lack of English

of all the hours in the past 9 months, only 5 have i been away from him

@StaceyAnne Oh, I get it. We have the same saying in Turkish, too.

anyway, this is kinda soppy for the EE chat, but as a girl it brings a huge amount of security to have him by me all the time. I feel like I have my own personal bodyguard

8:48 AM
@StaceyAnne You don't get bored?

no. never. we have so much fun together. he's my best friend

@StaceyAnne That's so cool. I am happy for you.

I think it's the way it's supposed to be.
Lol. I told Adrian he's my own personal bodyguard, and he said I'm his own personal chef.

9:30 AM
@StaceyAnne He has a point, lol

haha, yeah. I don't mind :)

2 hours later…
11:07 AM
Is there any way I can find what parts are drop in replacements for other parts? For example, It took half an hour to discover that M24C02-RMN6P was replaced with M24C02-RMN6TP. is there an easier way to get this information?
maybe my part searching skils are crap

11:38 AM
@StaceyAnne, in the good old days you'd pull out your transistor substitution guide ;-). But I don't think you're missing anything, some manufacturers do a good job of listing recommended replacements and some don't. Some (and their suppliers) are also proactive and I've received e-mails in the past to warn a part I've purchased is becoming end-of-life with recommendations on a migration path.

@StaceyAnne I generally google for <part-number> cross reference
.... and I'm back from my meeting.

12:24 PM
Hi

1:16 PM
hi @Rocketmagnet

1:43 PM
Hi all.

@DavidKessner hi david

@yogece, how is your VHDL going?

@StaceyAnne no stacy i am having other high priority work
@StaceyAnne i think i would start by next week.thank u for your concern
@StaceyAnne @DavidKessner do you have beagle board xm

@yogece Nope.

@yogece, neither do i

2:01 PM
@rawbrawb hi

@yogece What's your VHDL issue?

@DavidKessner from opencores.org, we can get so many ready made code for many block.but i dont know how to integrate those modules for xilinx.i am not well in VHDL/verilog
@StaceyAnne from your previous chat with abdullahkahraman you mentioned work in online.how do you test the firmware on hardware(how you are able to connect with remote hardware)

@yogece, I have my own development board that I use to test firmware.

@anorton Uh oh, that's bad, the sparkfun solder does have flux in it (I bought the same kit), I used that same solder and iron and the same thing happened (solder balling up and falling). Meaning it's the end. You will probably need to buy another (different iron) and some different solder.

2:17 PM
@StaceyAnne if possible can you tell which dev board you are using?

@yogece, of course. I'm using an atlys board by digilent. digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?Prod=ATLYS

@coding_corgi corgi do you know about beaglebone xm?

@yogece Hello

@rawbrawb do you know abt beaglebone xm?

@yogece no

2:25 PM
@StaceyAnne nice but cost is $349

@yogece No, I kind of want to stay away from beagle bone, they seem to have more for less in the raspberry pi,

@yogece, FPGA boards tend to be expensive. If you're looking for something cheaper/smaller to try, there is the Atlys Spartan6LX9 microboard for $89: xilinx.com/products/boards-and-kits/AES-S6MB-LX9.htm
although it's tiny in both physical size and FPGA area

@StaceyAnne What's so special about FPGA?
Boy, the room got quite when I asked that question...

2:42 PM
@coding_corgi, it's a loaded question.

Heya all

@yogece Excuse, I did not read my msg, I meant: No, I kind of want to stay away from beagle bone, they seem to have less for more $ than the raspberry pi, they don't seem to have that open-source feeling either...
@StaceyAnne In general?

@rawbrawb Brief update: I am being "escalated" up the food chain, to APAC tech strategy people... nothing concrete till then.

@coding_corgi, FPGAs are mainly used by girls that can't get hardware right first time. (just joking before I get slapped)

@yogece Ah, yes. That could be a problem. It doesn't help that most cores are not written well.

2:45 PM
@AnindoGhosh so is that tech/marketing group?

@rawbrawb "Alliances & Facilitation" apparently?

@coding_corgi Almost all solder has flux in it.

@coding_corgi, the processor based PC is really good at being flexible. I can use a PC to perform any operation that I want to by writing code telling the processor what to do. An FPGA is the opposite of a processor, in that I can tell the FPGA what to do, and it will be able to do that thing, and only that thing, in a very optimal, very efficient way. with no process wastage.

@coding_corgi r u using RPi

@coding_corgi FPGA's are awesome!

2:47 PM
@StaceyAnne stacey what about this boards papilio.cc/index.php?n=Papilio.Buy

@PeterJ Ha ha!

@rawbrawb Also suggested I meet the energy harvesting group, also APAC.

@DavidKessner Yes, I know, isn't that what I said? That it had flux

@yogece, that's also a good FPGA board to get started

@DavidKessner What a geeky answer....

2:49 PM
@AnindoGhosh hi

@yogece :-)

@AnindoGhosh that's good idea. Have seen what LT is doing in energy harvesting? Totally misses the market in terms of price.

@yogece Not yet, going to though... The place where I get all of my gEEk stuff has like 20 unsold

@AnindoGhosh beagle board or Raspberry pi

@PeterJ, ehm, you'd better be careful, or you'll get in trouble like @jippie was the other day
2

2:50 PM
@rawbrawb I know. However, it seems some niche players are breaking that price point massively. I'll research a bit and discuss.

@yogece EAT YOUR PI! Beaglebone boooo! Though their beagle icon is cute...
@StaceyAnne Ha ha!

@yogece Depends what you are interested in doing.

@AnindoGhosh Very true...

@AnindoGhosh yep there's lots of ways of doing it far cheaper ...

Can't believe I bought a couple of perf-boards that only have metal pads on one side...

2:52 PM
@AnindoGhosh do you have one?

@rawbrawb I got some pointers today, need to read up on them.
@yogece I borrowed a RPi for a few days, decided it's not useful to me.

@AnindoGhosh then whats your interest

@StaceyAnne Could you find the msg, this will be an entertaining morning...

@AnindoGhosh i am like"trade of all is master of none" i go everywhere

@yogece Probably the Papilio is my next board
@yogece "Jack of all trades, master of none"

2:56 PM
@yogece Makes two of us, you should try to master the basics though...

AFK for half an hour. TTYL people

@AnindoGhosh Which is better than a jack of one

@coding_corgi you can change tires on your car with a jack of one.

@rawbrawb No duh...

@AnindoGhosh may i know about your elect skills like fpga,analog design,uP,uC

3:01 PM
@yogece He is actually a photographer, which really surprised me...

@coding_corgi that may be, some times hobby may turn into business

@yogece ... Why doesn't he use his EE skill? Nevermind it really isn't my business...

@coding_corgi Thanks!

3:17 PM
@abdullahkahraman y0! ;]
Boy your name is hard to spell...

I'd better head off, it's late and drop bears will be out soon, chat with you all soon.

@coding_corgi Hey
@coding_corgi I thought you had retired?

@coding_corgi why use dog picture?

@abdullahkahraman Nah... I was very tired and grumpy... It was morning! I woke up like 5 minutes ago...

3:23 PM
@coding_corgi put your picture

@yogece You! ;]

@yogece Why some weird shapes?

@abdullahkahraman Thanks!
@yogece You! ;]
@yogece Why? Corgis are too cute! Sadly I don't have one... Not yet...
@abdullahkahraman Ha ha!

@coding_corgi @abdullahkahraman i am unable to put my picture in the chat room

@yogece Why is that? :S

3:24 PM
@yogece Sure...

@yogece Edit your profile and after your edit, click on "Apply these changes to all of my accounts."

@abdullahkahraman my rep point is only 78 i may need extra to set my pic
@abdullahkahraman let me try

@yogece No you don't...
When I get my corgis I am definitely not going to make them do this when they get off the G650:
Maybe something like this:

@abdullahkahraman i did but no change

@yogece Log in logout...

3:28 PM
@coding_corgi You are a potential computer engineer lol

@abdullahkahraman no change abdul

@abdullahkahraman Yes... I shall have more corgis than the queen! I shall be the next bill gates or steve jobs!

@yogece You have now enough rep to even create a chat room..
@coding_corgi lol

@abdullahkahraman thanks abdul

@abdullahkahraman Doesn't mean I can't one of these babys:

3:32 PM
@coding_corgi may i know your name
@PhilFrost welcome phil

@yogece STALKER!!! ;]

@yogece Bond. James Bond.

@abdullahkahraman They all seem to have a big price tag...
@DavidKessner That's 007 for short
@abdullahkahraman Not funny! ;]

@coding_corgi Hope money will not change you :)

@coding_corgi very nice name
@MLM hi

3:34 PM
@abdullahkahraman It won't just means I can have a rolls, g650, etc. maybe one of those hot alienwares, etc.

MLM
@yogece hey

@abdullahkahraman I can have more geek stuff! Which reminds me... I need to get a scope...

@MLM do u know about beagle board xm

MLM
@yogece nope

@MLM <jk>Move to AVR: ;]</jk>
52 mins ago, by PeterJ
@coding_corgi, FPGAs are mainly used by girls that can't get hardware right first time. (just joking before I get slapped)

MLM
3:38 PM
I have used AVR once
make some leds blink

@MLM sad... JK JK!

MLM
What do you use to program an ARM board? what kind of code is it

@MLM Do you have an Xbee?

MLM
@coding_corgi no

@MLM That's a good question... I think it's like C++

3:39 PM
@coding_corgi How much did you saved?

@abdullahkahraman None yet! :] I am going to talk to my dad about that...
@abdullahkahraman Don't think I am going to get a scope yet though...
@MLM Board? I wonder if there is like an ARMduino with like an ARM and female headers etc. ...
@MLM I hate searching for ARM, because if I don't put something geeky at the end the results are a bunch of arms...

MLM
@coding_corgi found this "Program in C, C++ with GNU tool chain - Program in Java with standard Android SDK"

@MLM Cool... That's way better than AVR! Hear that @jippie! BETTER THAN AVR! :]

MLM
That is at least for the pcDuino

@MLM Oh...

3:46 PM
am back.

MLM
@coding_corgi It has "Arduino-Style Peripheral Headers (Adapter Needed for Shield Form-Factor)" - I think this is what you are looking for

@MLM There is now an official Arduino board called the Due, that is ARM based. Programming is in the Wiring language (variant of C++). There is also the Texas Instruments Stellaris Launchpad (and recently the Tiva Launchpad, ARM Cortex M4)) for a mere $12.99 including international 3-day FedEx. This is programmed in C++.
@MLM The Tivo Launchpad will take 3 months to reach the market, though. The Stellaris ARM Launchpad is available now.

@AnindoGhosh This looks a little better: mouser.com/ProductDetail/Atmel/ATSAM4S-XSTK/…, yet scary to buy if it goes out of stock, take a look at the factory lead time...

@coding_corgi Better than what? It's vaporware, and it's priced at 10 times the Tivo ARM M4 launchpad, with no serious advantages.

3:53 PM
@AnindoGhosh ...

@coding_corgi I'm trying to understand why a product that will become available around a year from now, and is priced at 10x the price of competitive products, would be "better".

@AnindoGhosh It looks better than programming in wiring...

@AnindoGhosh But it's made by Atmel!!!

@coding_corgi None of the Texas Instruments Launchpad products are programmed in Wiring. Wiring is what Arduino uses, and I'm not even sure your comment is warranted there, in that the language used on the Arduino is the same language Atmel ships its AVR-GCC for. Are you making a considered statement, or just saying something to say something, please?
@coding_corgi See this: Programmed in straight regular C++, has an ARM Cortex M4, is available today, and is 12.99 inclusive of international shipping: estore.ti.com/Stellaris-LaunchPad.aspx
@coding_corgi As a matter of fact, the Stellaris Launchpad has two processors, the second being used for real-time, in-circuit debugging of the main one which you program. What would you need to achieve that with an Atmel board?

@AnindoGhosh I get it!
