gotta say, R20's snap to grid tool works really well once you sort it out. Specially for the couple of maps from the starter that are drawn 1:10 instead of 1:5
(then again if your map isn't square...)

Q: Does picking up a weapon from the ground take an action

briddumsRan into a couple of question while playing D&D 5th: Does drawing a weapon take an action Does picking up a weapon from the ground take an action

Q: DnD 5 ed. Return of the Old Deities (From Time of trouble - [FR])

ThamiarI was surfing on the internet, and I have encountered rumours that in 5th edition of DnD in Forgotten Realms world, the Old Deities will come back (Bhaal, Myrkul,Leira and so on.) What is more, I have heard that Bhaal is confirmed. Is it true? Someone read about it? Are there any official source...

Q: Has DnD5 failed to completely address the bias towards Fighters, to the detriment of Wizards?

hal9000Lets call out the elephant in the room - Historically DnD greatly favours Fighters over Wizards. Has DnD5e completely fixed this bias or has DnD5e left Wizards as second class citizens? Fighters get more hit points, feats every level, multiple attacks, no limit on attacks per day, and the list ...

Finally hit the halfway point on my DPAD sheet

And I've got half a dozen things planned for v3 if I get there before the PHB drops

yep
Interesting only 1 copy of PHB on sale from a 3rd party on amazon
couldve sworn all the books were available there earlier
hmm and same thing on Barnes and NOble
same company, wizards rpg team

1:59 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith huh? they are all on preorder

are you preordering from amazon or Wizards rpg team?
It looks like WOTC is selling direct through amazon vs. to amazon

nah, they are listed as the author
the retailer is still amazon

gotcha
it was displaying weird because I wasnt logged in I guess

previous editions had all of the primary authors' names on them...interesting choice

aw man select stores get it the 8th but it doesnt come out til the 19th
thats super lame

2:02 PM
yep
if it wasn't a $20 price difference I might go buy one off a shelf somewhere

and if I hadn't decided to pull the trigger on 2 sets of Tact-tiles I might be more willing to do so...

hmm yes
I kinda thought that the raffle wouldve already happened
and that I wouldnt have to make a choice to buy before the raffle went off

@JoshuaAslanSmith you can ping GN in main chat and ask what to story is.

I mean I pinged GN on a comment on the question she wrote in meta 2 weeks ago

2:31 PM
that's a first (i think), 5e answer to a 4e question...
note to self: Mordenkainans' sword is an evocation spell

2:48 PM
hah
yes

(it feels and plays like a conjuration spell...but it's not)
wizard makes a huge jump from 9->10
getting to stack your abil mod on all your spells has a lot of value

3:06 PM
yeah
Id imagine

Q: Passive checks or active checks when looking for monsters or hidden objects?

Juan AlonsoThe basic rules 0.1 state on p61: When your character searches for a hidden object such as a secret door or a trap, the DM typically asks you to make a Wisdom (Perception) check. Such a check can be used to find hidden details or other information and clues that you might otherwise ...

4:16 PM
I'm kind of amused at how useless potent cantrip is right now
Putting school features in basic that are completely pointless is...kind of pointless

haha
what does potent do?
Im debating whether to DV that question or no

4:44 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith half damage on a save with evocation cantrips...guess how many wizard evocation cantrips have saves :)

actually it's any cantrip (not limited to evocation)...still doesn't make a difference...

Sacred Flame is the only one...I assume wizards will get some in the PHB

5:16 PM
yep
sacred flame is nice as a backup
and the wizard pregen didnt get light
so I guess its good I have it
and its thematic

yeah, the wiz not getting light is strange IMO
(then again, cleric is nearly required to survive right now)
which seems to fall counter to one of their design goals

yep
but also no spare the dying on the cleric
I would honestly drop sacred flame for spare the dying

also odd and annoying

The pre-gen gets handaxes for throwing
and cleric being MAD means its got about as good a chance of hitting as the spell does
probably better though
easier to generate advantage on it
in theory

@JoshuaAslanSmith at L1 the handaxe is 4/10 of a point better by DPR
(it's worse when cover comes into play, and it's less thematic, and will eventually fall off the table)

5:22 PM
true
its just a dc 13 save isnt that hard to beat
and no damage on a miss

yup

and only 1d8 damage
at least give me 2d4 if theres no mod involved
cleric cantrips leave a lot to be desired

exactly. against Goblins, give me the +4 vs over needing an 11 to save (it's the same thing, so more damage wins)

though I think Thaumaturgy>presditigitaion (however you spell it)
because thaumaturgy seems built for social encounter and social moves as it were
presuade, intimidation, perform etc.
where as the wizard option seems to help with minor mechanical things

yeah, thaumaturgy is sort of like some of the 4e cantrips that let you sub arcana for various skills

5:27 PM
yep

1 hour later…
6:50 PM
debating including the MT wiz/cleric on the graphs. I feel like they need to be there, but they change the scale so dramatically it's hard to see any granularity in the rest of the graph
(specifically the wiz)
Ill have this public (at least to chat) in a few minutes, as soon as I finish locking down sheets
enjoy

multi target

ah okay, so thats how the damage worked out so good
so cleric and wizard are still the win button that we talked about earlier

yeah the idea that the cleric and wizard compete on damage at high levels is based basically solely on single target (ish) numbers.

6:57 PM
(both the single target versions of the cleric and wiz get powers that have multiple areas of effect, I gave them 1 target per area or in the cleric's case, since it's 10 areas, one per 2 areas)

so the ST wasnt as bad as we initially thought, but the MT is, and would destroy the scale of the rest of the comparisons I take it

aye

the wiz especially just dominates if you give them sufficient targets

so for balance I need to fill my dungeons with magic resistant or magic immune enemies

6:58 PM
if you look at the graph source tab, you can see the progressions

yep i started looking at it all

@JoshuaAslanSmith just limit the number of targets really

sometimes you just want that goblin horde to be a threat
5e thats only at level 1 or 2
orcs probably viable until lvl 5

yeah...make your cleric spend their L9 spell before the goblin horde :)
cuz yeah, meteor storm has a range of...like several miles and is 4 areas of...death

hahaha
really really hoping the eldtritch knight or whatever it was called for the fighter actually works
I pray each class gets at least 1 subclass/path as powerful as the wizard and cleric seem to be

7:02 PM
it should give a few solid melee area effects
well...they probably won't get anything past 4th level spells, but that will probably be fine. The catch will be what the opportunity cost looks like. Am I better off attackign 4-5 times, or casting a spell?
(similarly, how do CS dice work, do I get them every round like some versions of the PT or 1/rest)
cuz I'd take 3d8 over the slightly improved crit chance and +1 ac

combat superiority dice

does that mean combat superiority?
ah
yeah one of my players was using those in the playtest
they definitely added combat utility to the fighter

some of the iterations of those were cool
I'm not sure what the final version of that was though and how closely it will be reflected by the PHB battlemaster

even in the final, the fighter was able to impose advantage on the next attack against the target or disadvantage on the next attack the target made
yeah
I really need to make up some kind of dungeon world combat system that works like 4e but retains the lightness of DW
then sell it on drivthrurpg
though nobody else may want it
might be seen as counter to the spirit of the game

7:21 PM
might be...who knows though, there has to be someone else who is looking for good tactical combat for DW
adding different version of fighter just for kicks
so we can see how they scale

nice
guess I just need to puzzle it out

ok, 2 guesses who gets the title of 2nd best fighter at L20
(don't look)

7:41 PM
2nd best fighter?
do you mean the fighter class
like which specialty you take?

yep

2nd... may I infer that great weapon is first?

@JoshuaAslanSmith yes
(by about 200 points)
options are Ranged, Dueling and TWF (the other 2 don't have an effect damage)

8:28 PM
need to check their base effects real quick

+2 to hit on ranged, +2 damage in melee, +str to second smack

hmmmm
2 guess?
hmmm

yep

TWF or deuling

dueling, by a good chunk over Ranged over TWF

8:30 PM
interesting
lance?

that's a warhammer or longsword for the dueling fighter

ah, you should totally do mounted fighter w/lance

figure they'd go duelist...right?

yep
I mean why not
longsword as backup

yeah, they might be a case to pick up GWF late instead of defensive actually

8:33 PM
thats basically how my pally rolled in the playtest

gotcha, will calculate and return :)

lance and shield on horseback
anyway
done work
talk to you later

ciao
lol that wins

8:58 PM
though it is very competitive with the GWF
Next step is to trace the Rogue's various weapon combos

nice
how close did it get to GWF?
Id imagine if there is a mounted feat similar to that in playtest it could get even closer
Mounted Combat > great weapon fighting feat

@JoshuaAslanSmith 20 DPAD at L20
it's basically 8.5 vs 8.33 all the way up
they are very nearly the same
you just get +2 to your AC and a horse as a mounted fighter :)
and if you lose your mount, switching to the Longsword costs you a good bit, but it's not a huge hit, specially when you factor again that +2 to AC

yeah toats

9:16 PM
its interesting to see how much tiers matter for the fighter, and how little they matter for others.
ok time to commute. back later
