Q: Does the Evocation Savant feature apply to evocation spells copied into backup spellbooks?

DyndrilliacThe normal cost of copying a foreign spell into your spellbook is 2 hours and 50 gp per spell level. If you are copying spells from one of your spellbooks to another of your spellbooks (to keep backups) then the cost is reduced to 1 hour and 10 gp per spell level. The Evocation Wizard feature Ev...

Is the RSS feed acting appropriately here?

10:52 AM
@BESW yeah, AFAICT that guy has asked the last 3 5e questions

Cool. Is there anything else I should be doing here as room owner?

@BESW I don't think so...(tbh I'm not even sure what powers a room owner gets beyond moving messages...kicking and timeout maybe?)

Mostly feeds, setting the whitelist if it's a gallery, controlling stars, and granting ownership to others.
I can also set up events and control the title/subtitle/tags.

so if anyone else is running the 5e starter online (or IRL and wants to spend time printing), the catographer/artist from the starter set has the maps for sale on his website. The total for all the player maps is only about $10

3:32 PM
(w/ one fake)

3:50 PM
yeah he did the maps for dead in thay too and sold them as well

can't say I mind spending 1.25 per map for those to facilitate online play

oooh so we can expect a map this thursday, very n cie

yep, I went ahead and bought all 7 unmarked

yeah I think Id only buy the Player versions of the dungeon maps,
there like no reason to buy the world or town maps

Though, fair warning, I just ran the first part of part 2 with my home group and we literally had one combat the whole night. If you want to get all the side quests it will likely take our whole sessions this week
@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah...i debated on those, decided to pick them up, and realized I should have bought the DM version of the town map...

3:54 PM
yeah that is the one case

I'm not sure how folks do town scenes in general, but I figure that for things that aren't a secret, my PCs are competent enough to find theri way around town...

is there any reason not to show players the dm version

@JoshuaAslanSmith there's literally nothing secret on the town map IMO

preparing myself to buy a busybody and put my nose in everyone's business

@JoshuaAslanSmith excellent rubs fingertips :)

4:01 PM
I dont know how true to the characters flaws traits and bonds Ill play though, since one of them is "unsure if the gods exist" which seems crazy to me in a setting where my cleric's magic is literally a divine gift

@JoshuaAslanSmith the odd thing about a high magic world: divine magic doesn't have to come from the gods.
(and/or what hears your prayers is very much up in the air)

right, remembering all those not Gods religious beliefs in 4e

exactly
and with domains, you're almost tapping into a natural power source

just seems wishy washy
I always harbor a desire to bust out Paul's speech about the statue to an unknown god whenever I play D&D. Don't think it would ever go over well though. lol

4:17 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith playing a devout monotheist in D&D would be a fascinating character concept
(especially at the right table, with the right DM)

right, like at face value very cool, but yeah socially within the culture of D&D big hurdles

4:55 PM
gah Play stores get the PHB on friday....Friday!!

5:17 PM
Hi waxeagle - Are you continuing the 5e campaign this week?

@waxeagle ^
@robertF pings via @*INSERTNAME* are the best way to get eyeballs on something

@Joshua - Whoops - thanks.
@waxeagle - Are you continuing the 5e campaign this week? Also, did our PCs progress to level 2 (at least for purposes of gametesting the Basic rules)?

oh yeah we progressed
good article on custom background being explicit to the system

Great, thanks for the link. I need to update my Roll20 character sheet.

5:33 PM
@RobertF yes, that's the scheduled progression even :)
@RobertF I can link you direct to the campaign later (unless it's already in your R20 profile, not sure how that works)
I need to play with the tools in there some more :)

your campaign was not in my campaigns when I looked

@waxeagle - Ok, I'll sign in to my Roll20 account tonight to see if I can access my character sheet.

inviting someone via the link is not the same as their account joining a campaign

Ok - so I'll need to join the campaign on my end from my account?

@waxeagle when you look at teh campaign page and invite people from there it needs to be via email for them to permanently join the campaign I believe
probably not unless he made it public
he needs to send invites out via email address (mine is joshuaaslan@yahoo.com and thats also my accoutn email).

5:40 PM
@waxeagle My email is rfeyerharm@gmail.com.

wow there is a lot more documentation on roll20 vs when I last ran

gotcha, I can't access R20 from here, so if y'all are around this evening I think I have everyone's email adress at this point :)

@waxeagle Are we continuing the campaign Thursday evening?

@RobertF I'm free if you guys are
(and generally to the room, we have 2 open seats, feel free to join us)

Sure - but no pressure if you need more time or have other things going on.

5:49 PM
@RobertF nah, I don't have anything on thursday night
my regular gaming group is MIA for the next few weeks, 5e or 4e
(or one open seat pending @JoshuaAslanSmith's IRL friend he said he might have join us)

Yeah just invited him
he is in for the rogue

@JoshuaAslanSmith cool, scrubbed your message to protect from the googles

BTW are there rules about party composition in D&D? If we had all played wizards I think we'd have cleaned up with multiple magic missiles. In past games I've played there was an unspoken agreement that one party member could be a magic-user & one a cleric. It was assumed magic-users are rare, even in a fantasy world.

theres no explicit you cant do this thing, but its asking for trouble
5 wizards you say, well I have this helmed horror....

@RobertF I like to have all 4 umm.... "roles" filled in a party, but I'm not opposed to uniquely composed parties in general.
@RobertF well...if there were 3 wizzies all casting magic missile...I probably would have made sure it took 2 missiles per gobbo :)

6:01 PM
4e worked well with each of its roles filled but the all striker party also really really shined so long as those strikers had the spread of different power sources and damage focuses (charge, aoe, ranged, specific damage type combos like frost cheese or radiant mafia)

(I scaled them way down for the ambush and scaled them up a bit higher in the dungeon)

dramatically it worked quite well

(trying to get a feel for how scale works with 3 vs 4 or 5)

Yea, any sort of magic resistance spell that shuts down the wizard's spells and the players would be in trouble.

int is probably the least used save

6:02 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith and rightly so considering it's used so many other places

wizards usually have dex as their next highest to bump their low ac, but dex save effects usually (even in 5e from what I can tell) just avoid damage, not conditions and other mega bad effects

but 2 clerics and 2 wizards could be an interesting 4 man party...

so one of your wizards just got dominated/charmed and now hes casting fireball into the party

damage output would be an issue

cant wait to touch pally and also try out the rogue and fighter subclasses/builds that we havent seen
I want assassin to be everything the 4e version couldnt be because it tried to be too narrative in a mechanics driven game
also when a garotte both silences and grabs you, thats pretty powerful in 5e I think

6:05 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith srsly disadv on attacks and no V component spells :)
(M and S component still seems possible unless actually restrained)

Right, Im interested to see how the martial classes handle mage killing
obviously Im just hoping/guessing garrote makes a return

@JoshuaAslanSmith hard to imagine an assassin without one

lots of people loved that blowdart ranged assassin in 4e, but yeah with Assassins Creed being SO BIG I'd image the assassin is either melee based or there is a choice between melee or ranged specialization
I figure the shadow/ninja monk will work like the lame (though I hope actually work this time) original assassin

if it can avoid needing multiple turns to get it's damaged stacked up....

6:09 PM
the PHB3 assassin was great in concept...lousy in actual execution :(

classic example of looks great on paper, but in actual play it falls flat, some of those later AEDU classes before Essentials hit definitely smell of 0 playtesting

6:41 PM
Is Roll20 the most popular online tabletop RPG resource, or are there others? I'm told WotC was developing an online tabletop for 4e but it fizzled.

@RobertF I tried it once when it was in beta, it was built in java and...did not look very nice...certainly couldn't hold a candle to where R20 is right now
(it never made it out of beta)
There are some others out there, but AFAIK R20 is the one most people who play online use

And it's free!

exactly

@robertF @waxeagle I managed to play multiple sessions it was quick and dirty, and sometimes clunky, but what it did best was you could directly import monster builder and character builder files from your account (it just grabbed them off the server) and modeled all of the 4e powers perfectly
but in general roll20 has much much better implementation
@robertf 5e is going to have codename:morningstar

@JoshuaAslanSmith that's cool (my internet sucks so that's part of why it seemed so clunky to me)...but one of my reqs is that something like that work with my sub par internet speeds. R20 does that

6:44 PM
right right
I think why it needed low latency is that monsters and PCs werent actually stored locally or in the same server system as the stuff running the map, so it needed to communicate with the server for char builder

makes sense to me. I mean they were loath to let the client do anything re: monsters or characters
you couldn't even change your stats without doing half a dozen postbacks

I need to fiddle around with Roll20 some more - can we upload gif or jpeg images (like maps) to Roll20?

@RobertF yeah, if you open your own campaign you can :)
we're going to have real maps! on Thursday instead of my crappy hand drawn ones :)

@waxeagle if we are officially players as player we might be able to add stuff to a library or our own, not 100 percent sure

@JoshuaAslanSmith cool.

6:50 PM
hazy memories
@robertf there are beta signups linked in one of the blog posts for codename morningstar
I figure that beta invites will go out after gen con

@Joshua - Ok thanks I'll take a look.

So...what would you do if you found yourself with a beard of feathers? (that leaves when you sneeze)
or suddenly turned blue
(there is some awesome RP stuff on the WM sorcerer table)

This is what new CIA recruits are asked, right? It's a trick question.

@RobertF lol if only. those are real effects that can be the result of rolling on the Wild Magic table :)

49-50: You can't speak for the next minute. Whenever you try, pink bubbles float out of your mouth.
I can see a lot of potential running old D&D modules in Roll20 by scanning in the module maps. Don't know if there are copyright issues or if the resolution would be too fuzzy.

7:07 PM
@RobertF shouldn't be a problem with copyright as it would be considered fair/intended use I think (as long as you aren't hosting them for distribution)
One of the things that is high on my list is to run a 5e conversion of Barrier Peaks

Ooh, that would be fun - I've never played that one. A few years ago I downloaded a bunch of pdfs from the d20 Midnight campaign books, which was discontinued by Fantasy Flight Games in 2009. Seemed like a fun (if bleak) setting.

yeah the sorc table, my fave is where you turn into a potted plant

I haven't played it either, but it's a classic

barrier peaks has the thingamajigs right?

@JoshuaAslanSmith isn't that great? So many great opportunities for RP and just silliness. It needs to be in the right campaign, but it's cool. the only thing I don't like is how DM dependent it is

7:14 PM
right

basically, I think I'll let the player dictate when he wants to role on the table to get back his adv power

I guess thats supposed to reinforce the theme
sorta like a gm compell

Barrier peaks has a deck of cards for different hi-tech doodads, as I recall.

yeah...there will be moments for it
@RobertF yeah, and they were...dangerous/deadly

if you crit fail, its really a crit fail lol

7:16 PM
For a truly zany campaign, use the wild magic table in the module (2e?) where the PCs fall down a rabbit hole to Wonderland.

Ive always wanted to make a knight who used the power armor
its treated as heavy plate
and you get jump jets
and crazy bonuses to strength and endurance

@JoshuaAslanSmith yep.

they need to fix their old article archives links

@JoshuaAslanSmith looking for the 4e barrier peaks items?
@JoshuaAslanSmith prepend "archive." to the url, it might work

8:00 PM
hey that worked
man they really do need to fix this stuff
they are so bad at transitions
argh was searching power armor not powered armor

huh, it popped for power armor for me...but it's way down in the results and they aren't alphabetical by default
(helped to filter to dragon content)

8:13 PM
hmmm
Im sure it was in the like 200 or so items that came up for power and armor but instead of filtering I went to find the name and hit the wall, but then I had to respond to a service call
