@SmokeDispenser Part of the immigration process, for any country, is to make sure of the motivation of the immigrant. Hence seemingly absurd procedures still have some rational justification.
@ThomasPornin and I understand that (and even approve of it) but I need to pay a Heathcare surcharge based on every year I plan to be there - it's NOT a pre-payment of healthcare tax (which I can understand) but it's a fee for the privilege to pay the healthcare taxes
@schroeder From my experience, you'd normally be looking at between a week and a month for a new car, in stock config, and twice that if you want something non-standard (like a different colour)
@SmokeDispenser The Commonwealth of Nations is an organization of whom some independent states (53 for now) are members. UK is one of the members, Canada is another member.
@CodesInChaos, I, for example, wouldn't have gotten into national health care if I didn't have a job below the threshold as my parents are in private health care.
isn't healthcare in EU now supposed to be unified in the sense that if you're paying for your healthcare in any EU country you can seek treatment in any EU country?
@TildalWave this sounds wonderful. My health care in China consisted of having the village shaman chant the names of all the forgotten idols of old, and rubbing weird pastes on me. I also got a nice powering too.
Rubbed powder all over me and kept chanting Mao Zedong Thought. I may be slightly exaggerating in that there were no chanting or singing... but the rest, yup.
@TildalWave allegedly. For personal reasons, I was unable to verify the authenticity of the rhino horn powder. Instead, I laughed and gave him a thumbs up
@SmokeDispenser I had to sign something at the beginning of my studies that I can't switch during my studies, but I'm pretty sure I had to right to choose afterwards.
@Adi lol - nope - when I first started contacting UK immigration lawyers, they kept saying, "you don't need a special visa, you're German and an EU citizen" just because of my name
I am trying to find a way to block I2p and Freenet darknets in a coorporate network. Does anyone know way to block them (on firewall)? Do I need to close particular ports or block entry nodes (like Tor)?
Thank you in advance
looks like hell is getting a bit chillier today... "To make Windows a more comfortable home for Web devs, the bash shell is coming to Windows." (from the MS Build keynote)
Thomas said he's using it because of the hardware support: if it doesn't work on OS X then it'll never work, unlike Linux where it could theoretically work if you spend your life on making it work.
@RоryMcCune That's the good thing about Ubuntu: the release cycle goes at about the right pace. Not too slow with regards to newer hardware or software (like Debian stable), not too fast to be reliable (like Debian testing)
@ThomasPornin yeah I'm going to try my laptop on Xubuntu 16.04 when it comes out, should be a good match it's a little bit old hardware-wise but pretty mainstream
@QPaysTaxes well, it's accumulating flags now presumeably -- usually you can post a question/answer in here that needs attention and it accelerates the review process
@ThomasPornin yeah I used lubuntu for a while, but I (and this is a bit of a wishy washy thing) just liked xubuntu's GUI more, plus it seemed to have a better default package list (build essentials by default for example)
@MarkBuffalo In my practice of code writing, an important ergonomic point is that my brain shall be able to predict the outcome of editing actions -- I don't wait for the visual feedback.
@ThomasPornin I have this same issue, when it sometimes lags while I'm already typing the code it's about to suggest... or it basically overwrites what I'm trying to write with something totally bs
@RоryMcCune I have to say, if this works as well as I hope it will, it'll be amazing. There are so many things I pop into a VM for that I'll be able to do natively now.
The main points that make me prefer Linux over Windows on my own PC are the economy of RAM and the much smoother handling of updates. Ubuntu-over-Windows won't really fix that.
