9:00 PM
No. Lemme try and get some pics

@RoryAlsop
^I think this shows it
@DavidFreitag is that what you were thinking about?

@RоryMcCune That guy is wrong, the new double-keyed cards can fit in both sata and pci M.2 slots
@RоryMcCune And, yes

yeah but the general principle of fitting it..

So am I to use the Key M space?

@RoryAlsop Yes

9:06 PM
If so, that now makes sense. It was entirely covered by the graphics
Thank you for being patient

@RoryAlsop The good thing about the GPU is you don't even need to install it to get running.
And, once you do install it, it's a simple matter of switching slots.

I thought you were meaning either the key E thing or that short pcie slot

@RoryAlsop No problem. I'd hate to have you buy 1700£ worth of parts and be stuck pushing the brown stuff up a hill with a pointy stick
@RoryAlsop The short pcie is a x4 connector, it is effectively useless, cover it. The Key E slot is for a laptop-style wireless card, you probably don't need it.

holy shit
1700 in parts o.O

@LucasKauffman He said 3000£ was ok, I told him that I could build one for half that :P
32GB of ram, 980 Ti, 3.5GHz hex core i7

9:13 PM
@DavidFreitag 3.5. they sell that
what is Rory going to run on that?

@DavidFreitag s'a similar spec to my PC with a nicer Graphics card.. and I think a slightly faster CPU

@LucasKauffman three 4k monitors and ED presumably

I got the i7-5820K

@LucasKauffman mine runs VMs very nicely

9:15 PM
@RоryMcCune 10 at a time :P?

I can have a couple of VMs running at the same time as doing other stuff and not really notice

@RоryMcCune Yours and the one @Rory got are socket compatible...

they can have CPU babies :O?

@LucasKauffman well remember there's browsers and stuff too

32 gb is for chrome

9:16 PM
@RоryMcCune how much ram did you get since you use vms?
Also, you aren't using the stock cpu cooler are you...

@DavidFreitag initially when I got it 16, but I've gone up to 32 as it's not that pricey an upgrade :)
@DavidFreitag dunno guv, the base PC was a present from my missus, so it'll be whatever PC Specialist put on it... doubt it'll be the stock one tho'
they do quite a nice line in custom PCs

@RоryMcCune I really fought with whether or not to give @RoryAlsop 64GB. Instead I chose 32GB in 4 sticks upgradeable to 64 if the heat sync will let them fit

decent case selection, reliable builds
@DavidFreitag I'd say 32GB should be enough for most tasks these days..

maybe video editing could use more

9:19 PM
@RоryMcCune Does it look like that nonsense ^^ ?

@DavidFreitag been a while since I've had the case off, but I don't think so..

I swear by Noctua

@RоryMcCune Tsk! you should regularly de-dust it!

@DavidFreitag for me it'd be more like de-cat hair it
the top fan is nice and warm for cats to sit on

The heat sink will allow another 4 of these awesome red chrome memory sticks, @David
If I need

9:20 PM
@RоryMcCune Cat hair has a significant dielectric characteristic. Over time it can actually effect your computer. You should probably get a vacuum :D
@RoryAlsop Perfect, that's exactly what I planned.

Awesome choice of cooler by the way. Love the fact it had a 12" and 14" fan built in

@RoryAlsop That's the best cooler on the market. It will outstrip anything but super custom liquid jobs.
You should be able to OC the crap out of it and not notice any thermal issues.

Hoping I don't need to OC... My plan is to see how slow and quiet I can set the fans
As I'll probably have this in the room next to my bedroom

@LucasKauffman This is teh cooler that I selected for @RoryAlsop newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608024
@RoryAlsop Which I figured, but it's nice to have the option if you so decide.

My existing one is quiet but I can still hear it at night

9:24 PM
@RoryAlsop I turn mine off at night, that's just a waste of power.

@DavidFreitag sweet

Also, pretty much every OS needs to be rebooted regularly to avoid issues.

@DavidFreitag except z/OS

@LucasKauffman Linketh me mine brethren.

I actually do turn it off at night now.

9:25 PM
z/OS is a 64-bit operating system for mainframe computers, produced by IBM. It derives from and is the successor to OS/390, which in turn followed a string of MVS versions. Like OS/390, z/OS combines a number of formerly separate, related products, some of which are still optional. z/OS offers the attributes of modern operating systems but also retains much of the functionality originating in the 1960s and each subsequent decade that is still found in daily use (backward compatibility is one of z/OS's central design philosophies). z/OS was first introduced in October 2000. The newest version is...

Z/OS rocks

@RoryAlsop you can actually set one up yourself with Hercules, I have the image lying around somewhere

Current z/os will still run stuff written in 1970
I get to see ones at work

> IBM has started to allow Java code running on z/OS to execute above the 2 GB bar, again for performance reasons.
LOL

To be fair I don't get to play on them

9:26 PM
@DavidFreitag it even runs python and SAP

@LucasKauffman Interesting.

@RoryAlsop oh btw, did David explain with your new computer you dont need to pay for cycles you use :P

I have often toyed with the idea of making a single board beowulf cluster

they brought a new model to market which also supports docker

Lol @LucasKauffman

@LucasKauffman Speaking of docker, did you see the docker crates kickstarter was successful?
@LucasKauffman I want that case.

@DavidFreitag I want an IBM Emperor
but I dont have the money, not even if they give one for free and I just need to pay for the electricity :(

Yeah I can barely afford anything. I think the CEO where I work has a sixth sense about people wanting a raise, she hasn't been at work all week :/

@RоryMcCune aaaawwww yuuuuh

9:32 PM
Yeah, that looks like two of the ones we have

@RoryAlsop you got one of the new ones :O?

I don't think it's that one, but the front of them looks very like that. All angles and skits and lights
Think they took a leaf from sgi/Cray

@RoryAlsop have you had them longer than a month :P?

@LucasKauffman Yeah that thing definitely has some sweet FPGA porn in there.

@DavidFreitag these things are the bomb, very pricey, but the bomb

9:42 PM
@LucasKauffman Xilinx is working directly with Intel to produce server CPUs that have on-die FPGA capabilities.

@DavidFreitag but do they run COBOL?

@LucasKauffman Depends on the software
The following design film.... HNNNG so much pron

even from a security perspective, z/OS and RACF are really really cool
one of few systems which managed to implement clark wilson and brewer nasher properly

Looks like these z series mainframes are all about optimization and offloading
And they are using TONS of FOSS software, which is.... surprising.

@DavidFreitag FOSS?

9:50 PM
@LucasKauffman Free and Open Source Software.
Woohoo tautology

why is it a tautology?

@LucasKauffman free and open source software software
ATM machine
@LucasKauffman Not the name, what I said

10:30 PM
@RоryMcCune quite possibly - and I'm also the 2nd Mensan

10:47 PM
@schroeder 2nd ?

@RoryAlsop 3rd? I'm assuming

11:06 PM
@LucasKauffman that's really interesting, I wasn't aware of Brewer and Nash or Clark-Wilson before.

@DavidFreitag heh I run stock heatsinks mostly.

@JourneymanGeek Stock heat sinks are awful, you should probably stop. Especially when you consider a decent cooler is like $10 that is WAAAAY better than a stock one.

@DavidFreitag: Was going to go with a hyper212 or liquid cooling. I've not had serious issues with it but planned incremental upgrade will almost certainly not have a stock cooler
I don't OC so,,,

@JourneymanGeek Liquid cooling is not as efficient as you would think. Unless you spend a serious amount of time and money on a custom job, you're better off with a nice noctua.

@DavidFreitag Oh, I wanted it cause it would be possible for me to undo the radiator and blow it out without mucking around near the processor
Place I live in is fairly dusty

11:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well, that helps, but still. The stock coolers do not have nearly enough thermal mass to keep a rig running for a decent amount of time. That, and the clips on them must have been designed by a chimpanzee that had a full-frontal lobotomy.

@DavidFreitag: I was running er... 7-12 every day
Now, not so much, desktop goes to sleep while I'm at work ;p

@JourneymanGeek You're doing it wrong. The proper procedure for dust removal in a PC is vacuum.

@DavidFreitag: er. Dosen't quite work for cleaning out heatsinks for me
I use a gas duster

@schroeder I meant 2nd on what scale?

@JourneymanGeek They make special small handheld vacuums specifically for this purpose.

11:19 PM
ahh
I'll have to look at it

Otherwise you're just moving the dust around instead of cleaning it.

(anyway, I'm putting off updates till I work out my desk situation, and whether my dad's upgrading)

Then it's in the air, and that stuff is not good for your lungs.

heh. I blow it out, then wipe down (dry) with a microfibre cloth
mostly works for me

@RoryAlsop lol in count within the set of Mods
@RoryAlsop I'm unsure what other scale would be available to me, aside from IQ score and length of membership

11:29 PM
@schroeder "Length of membership" hehehe
I didn't know that was important for a moderator.

@DavidFreitag whatever floats your "boat"

@schroeder Whatever blows your "dress" up
