@Simon ...
Morning all

Morning!
@schroeder ... Pressure to perform? :-)

1 hour later…
9:01 AM
@RoryAlsop watcha' you back in the UK or still sunning yourself?
hey @ColinCassidy you all ready for the big preso?

@RоryMcCune working on it ;)

@ColinCassidy nice. You been over to the whole defcon/blackhat thing before?

@RоryMcCune yes I went in 2013, so have some idea what to expect. the schedules are up and we're on at a good time, but clashing with big names. Which is kinda good in that we'll get interested people

@ColinCassidy ahh well you know what to expect then. Yeah you should have a good audience, will be fun I'm sure :)

@RоryMcCune yep, more so when it's all over

9:05 AM
@ColinCassidy yeah speaking is what I call "type 2 fun" which is Fun when it's over :)
although I tend to enjoy it once I get started on the talk, before there's always some nerves..

@RоryMcCune I'm usually alright once I get going, it's the before but that scares the shit out of me

@ColinCassidy yeah I think a lot of people are the same, I've started telling people when I start my talk to warn me if I speak to quickly :)
I generally rush my opening 'cause of that

the opening is the bit that I practice constantly, and will probably have that be almost completly scripted out, the rest I rely on notes, or the slides themselves to remind me

my technique has been to run through several times and work out bits for each slide then look to remember enough of the bits as I speak
seems to largely work for me,
but I think everyone's a bit different in what works best for them ...

and in this case I have backup, so I'm only really doing about 20 mins of material, not flying solo for the full 45-50 inutes

9:12 AM
@ColinCassidy yeah that's gotta be handy :)

9:59 AM
@RоryMcCune - nah, here for a couple of days yet, then a week up in the mountains
@ColinCassidy - it'll be awesome fun

3 hours later…
12:54 PM
Man @Simon you've missed some quality reddit drama while you silly American continent people are asleep

@RоryMcCune I'm pretty sure the drama isn't over yet.

@Arperum true but he's missing it unfolding live, like where all the mainstream press sites start writing stories about it
probably 'cause it's disrupting their main source of "funny" or "offbeat" content
^livestream

@RоryMcCune I just went to /r/pics, one of the subreddits that had gone dark (and had all mods removed and opened again. It's quite the revolt there.

@Arperum yeah that and reddit.com/r/todayilearned are two of the largest open subreddits and they're filled with Victoria themed posts
reddit.com/r/GoldTesting/comments/3bypzz/amageddon_tracking < -- list of closed subreddits, quite a few large ones in there

@RоryMcCune Both were closed earlier. So all the mods from both might have been kicked out and then reopened them.

1:06 PM
@Arperum apparently they've been directly contacted by admins and promises (unspecified) have been made to get them re-opened
this was likely a mistake as now they're just filled with Victoria related stuff

@RоryMcCune Promises of "Open up, never tell anyone or we'll kick you of the fucking internet"

well that's the prob. nominally each subreddit is owned by the mods.. if the admins start taking control of popular subreddits, that will be the end of reddit
it'll turn into digg faster than you can say narwhal

@Arperum yeah I saw that, it may or may not be legit... I've seen at least one post which purported to be from an /r/pics/ mod saying it wasn't legit... but then of course who knows who controls that account!

@RоryMcCune Yea, it's kinda hard to figure that one out now.

1:12 PM
it'll come out in the wash though if they've nabbed a sub-reddit like that, they'll be toast

@RоryMcCune They are in for a couple very hard weeks/months either way. Or they've done fucked, or they have a massive trust issue to fix.
Plus need of some communication team.

@Arperum yeah if only they had an employee who was well liked and known in the community who could help them do better in that regard .....
but for me Reddit was always slightly anarchic, community led , and a nice place. When they start doing standard corporate crap like no-notice layoffs, they lose that

@RоryMcCune to the burn ward with them

1 hour later…
2:32 PM
@ColinCassidy ahh I was looking forward to your talk! And, well, verifying you in person. Sadly, I shan't be going, since I decided not to sell my soul to the company that was gonna send me to the conf.
that was a tough decision.
@RоryMcCune I always have trouble with my openings too. As you said, once you get going... Actually my last couple talks I spent extra time setting up the opening, and it really made a huge difference.

@AviD ahh shame in a way as I'm sure going to BH/Defcon would've been fun, but then from what you've said about the company in question and their T&C's I can kinda understand your decision...

yeah :-(

@AviD yeah I try to extra rehearse my opening 5 mins now...

thing is, they were were great about it all - a real human hiring process - right up until the fine print in the contract.

@AviD and then... whammo! lawyers!

2:36 PM
@RоryMcCune it wouldnt have been so bad if that was their excuse. I've met lawyers.
it was the justifying it that was a problem.
Merkans.

2:49 PM
@AviD shame, I more than happy to meet up with anyone who's prepared to listen to me drone on :)

heh

so hot here in belgium wtf

@AviD What's funny is that it's required knowledge if you wanna gain US citizenship through naturalization uscis.gov/citizenship/learners/study-test/…

@TildalWave inorite
someone should try saying "no, Im a REAL merkan, I dunno ANY of that stuff!"

@AviD "Obama sounds a lot like Osama to me!"

2:54 PM
hey @TildalWave, have time for a logo request?

could do, shoot

I want to Israelize the owasp logo.

what, again?

@TildalWave still
wait, did you already do that?
did I already ask you?

in other words, you want a wasp crawling out of the David's star?

2:55 PM
damn this senile thing is crazy
@TildalWave heh, nah
so till now I just had "Israel" written next to it, I was thinking of making it like blue and white stripes
like the flag

@AviD the Greek one? :))

ha
this one, derp
The flag of Israel (Hebrew: דגל ישראל Degel Yisra'el, Arabic: علم إسرائيل 'Alam Isra'īl) was adopted on October 28, 1948, five months after the establishment of the State of Israel. It depicts a blue hexagram on a white background, between two horizontal blue stripes. The blue colour is described as "dark sky-blue", and varies from flag to flag, ranging from a hue of pure blue, sometimes shaded almost as dark as navy blue, to hues about 75% toward pure cyan and shades as light as very light blue. The flag was designed for the Zionist Movement in 1891. The basic design recalls the Ashkenazi Tallit...

googles symbols of the state of Israel

or like wavey stripes

you expect a tsunami?

2:58 PM
thats the pathetic one I've used
source PNGs and EPS at owasp.org/index.php/Marketing/Resources#tab=WELCOME, whatever you like
@TildalWave tsunami, why?
a tsunami of PEOPLE, at the conference

How about I just change the logo's button to look like there's Israel's flag in the background?
@AviD what do those blue stripes represent?

btw - if anybody is planning a trip to the Levant, you should aim for October 13 - AppSecIL gonna rock!

I dunno, but their position would suggest to me the sea and the sky

> The blue stripes are intended to symbolize the stripes on a tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl. The portrayal of a Star of David on the flag of the State of Israel is a widely-acknowledged symbol of the Jewish people and of Judaism.
@TildalWave I think there is also that

yeah in other words they have to be stripes not waves
@AviD you have a link to a big PNG of the logo?

3:01 PM
@TildalWave ahh I meant waves, like a waving flag
@TildalWave Take your pick - owasp.org/index.php/Marketing/Resources#tab=WELCOME. Also EPSs.
I dont know what those are, but you graphics people seem to like them ;-)
I wouldnt even bother with the star, just the white and blue...

thanks ... OK, I'll trow together something

thanks!
free ticket to AppSecIL is waiting for you ;-)
and beers on me, ofc - if you ever happen to make it down this way
hahahaha, that wikipedia
> It has been alleged by some groups that the blue stripes on the Israeli flag actually represent the rivers Nile and Euphrates as the boundaries

3:40 PM
@AviD just a fast preview but how about something simple like this ^?

Thanks!

oh wait that's not finished LOL ... it's just cycling through ideas, I'd have to polish it a bit if you wanna use it for print ans such ... but gotta go now, be back in an hour

thats a nice start. I guess the middle should also be white... what about the wasp?
@TildalWave no rush, I'm getting off now for the weekend anyway...
btw see e.g. Dublin's logo:

@AviD I'll make layers and then play with colors and backgrounds a bit, will see what comes out of it, not everything that is in the head later actually works. OK, I'm off for now

bucharest:
switzerland
just some ideas....
Russia
@TildalWave thanks!

4:16 PM
Just picked my missus up from her trip to Oban... With the bonus being, she brought me back a bottle of Oban Single Malt :)

hmmm - with candied ginger?
love that pairing

@schroeder ya know I didn't get any candied Ginger, ... will have to try that tho'

whatever Oban uses for their ginger, I haven't found something like it here - it's all too sweet here
in Oban's tasting room, they have bowls of ginger - amazing pairing
$100 for Oban here :(

@schroeder yikes! hopefully somewhat less here as it was bought at the distillery...

1 hour later…
5:52 PM
can someone please kill me
the weather in europe wtf

@LucasKauffman surely it's cooler than Singapore?

@RоryMcCune it's not
@RоryMcCune I'm having more trouble here than I had over there

6:46 PM
@AviD sorry, took me longer to get back than I thought ... you're OK if I do this through the weekend, right?
I like the Switzerland one, and Russian one is OK. Other two are just lazy (Irish one is just color overlay, and Romanian one is ... well, like it is LOL)

7:18 PM
@LucasKauffman pretend you're on holiday, maybe that'll help...

7:55 PM
It's much hotter here than Singapore. Marc Heal says it's 27° there at it's hottest. Still over that here and it's 10pm
Makes the Moroccan tagine I just had feel right at home...

Q: True random number generator C++

ncomputers.orgQuestions Do these codes generate true random numbers? If not: can you prove their pseudo-randomness? For computers with more than two CPUs #include<chrono> #include<iostream> #include<thread> using namespace std; #define Mili 7 #define Base 7 #define Thrs 2 typedef unsigned char Num;...

not acceptable on CS because we can't read C++ code
would be shot down on SO as a code dump with no clear question
would Sec.SE or Crypto take it? It's a really crappy question but amenable to interesting answers

@Gilles Code Review?

@TRiG Hmmm. No, this isn't code that he wrote, so it's explicitly off-topic
:22553293 um, no, “help! my homework is due tomorrow”

@Gilles I think it's worse than that - the code comes from a website ASKING for the world to help to prove its pseudo-randomness
so - either the OP is the website operator, or it's not and the OP wants credit for helping the project

@schroeder OH

that's the guy who wrote the code

8:39 PM
I hadn't noticed that the link was to his own site, I'd assumed it was material from the lecturer

"I wrote code! Prove I am great!"

> They generate unpredictable numbers thanks to the uncertainty principle.
oh wow

so - back to the original problem: what site would be appropriate?
it's his own code

Can you write a comment explaining why he has no business going anywhere near security or crypto? I'm a mod on CS so I have to be a bit more easygoing
But... since it's his own code, then CR would indeed be appropriate

yep

8:41 PM
Thanks, that was very helpful!

that's me - deflating egos, one forum at a time

This site is about computer science; we can explain to you what “pseudo-randomness” and “true random” mean (your code is neither, by the way), but we don't parse C++ here. I'm migrating your question to a site where I think it's appropriate with minor edits. — Gilles ♦ 24 secs ago

nice dig you got in there
I don't even know what to say about what's wrong with his approach. It's a little like generating a random numbers by counting how many ants walk in a certain direction in his ant farm
you have perception errors, selection bias, and self-referential interference

9:26 PM
@RоryMcCune I didn't miss any of it, it was happening last evening.

@Simon have you seen the front page today... it's be a s**t show the whole day.. /r/pics/ was particularly amusing, the whole front page was victoria related imagery

@RоryMcCune I haven't been on it yet today so time to lurk!

@Simon it's fairly funny
is the live blog

lulz

@RоryMcCune for those of us who don't care to read hundreds of pages that assume the reader already has all the context, can you explain what all that fuss is about?

9:34 PM
TL;DR: very important employee to the mods was fired, mods revolted

@Gilles the trigger point is that they fired (with not notice) the lady who ran one of the bit parts of the site (the ask me anything bit) this left the people running that bit of the site in the s**T and they weren't happy
comes against a backdrop of crap communication between the people running reddit and the unpaid mods they rely on

mods now on endless complaint on how poorly Reddit treats their volunteer army of mods

and also recent censorship of what people thought was a free speech area of the Internet
it was extremely tone deaf to fire the most publicly identifiable reddit staff member in a bad way
she is (from what I've seen) a very nice person and did not deserve (as far as I'm aware) to have that done to her

Silicon Valley references everywhere on reddit, I love it!

and now the AMA mods don't seem to want to work with the site admins...
which given that AMA is the highest profle bit of the site, could be painful

9:40 PM
so what's next? everybody moves to greenit?

voat - apparently

voat is the current front-runner if they can get a hosting company to actually support them...

Voat is under extremely heavy load. We are working around the clock to scale our infrastructure in order to accomodate new users.

We will be back as soon as the fires are out. Maaaaah. (goat sound)

I wouldn't be surprised if this is reddit's "Digg" moment...

9:43 PM
The admin who fired her is getting downvoted to death

annd now it turns out the reddit CEO fired someone for having cancer np.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/3c0idl/…
short of finding out she shoots kittens, I really can't see how this could get worse for her

A: Generating random numbers from thread timing in C++

GillesA true random number generator (TRNG) is a source of bits such that each bit has a probability of exactly 1/2 of being 1. Your code is obviously not a TRNG since its bias will heavily depend on the timing of operations. A pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) is a deterministic algorithm that pr...

@schroeder I started
it's too hot to analyze his computation part, I suspect it's flawed, it looks fishy
EEEEK
I just realized I migrated to crypto, not code review
but I posted a CR answer, not a Cr answer

9:58 PM
I was wondering
@Gilles oooh - I learned something from your analysis!

You learned something from Guigui?!?

very clear explanation!

I wonder how I managed to migrate to Crypto
I must have typed CR to refer to code review, which doesn't work, the dialog box requires a substring of the name or of the URL
but “CR” is a substring of 4 different sites plus their metas, so I had to pick “Crypto” in a list with 7 other sites

Well, I have to say this about the question: I now understand random number generators a lot more
thanks @Gilles

@schroeder you're welcome
I wonder what I taught you though, apart from the part about CPU jitter (which I'd only barely heard of until today) this is all rather basic stuff
there are more detailed explanations here and on Crypto
generating random numbers is a very hard problem

10:07 PM
but having a crappy, crappy example to compare against made a difference
seeing the basic theory (which I knew) in context, with references, to his code finally made some things hit home

I'm still not sure how crappy his code is
the “PRNG” part

difference between learning the rules of a sport, and watching someone playing it
@Gilles yeah - but that's the point - he should already have had a statistical model to work from - without that, it almost doesn't matter how good it might be
@Gilles and as a result, he should be able to demonstrate on his own whether it is statistically valid

oh yes, definitely
he's a crank
which is why I regret migrating to Crypto, even if it's possibly on-topic (not necessarily, because he never said he was making a cryptographically secure RNG, and non-CS RNG have less stringent requirements)
