6:47 AM
morning

7:13 AM
Morning!
@kiBytes - U from around Indian subcontinent?

No, from Spain

Ok.
¡Buenos días! :)

what was the thing that lead you to think I am Indian?
my English level? xD (sorry for that, I really try to improve it!)

LoLzz no.. It was morning in India too when you pinged (around 11 am)

7:47 here =D

7:20 AM
I am from India (currently in US).

I meant when I pinged xD now it is 8:20 =)
So it is late over there xD

Whoa! You sure get up early xD
Ya, its around 2:21 AM

7:32 AM
Morning all

morning @RоryM you're early today

@TildalWave yeah, got a test to start today, so nmap scans ho! (external Inf job)

@RоryMcCune nice, I always liked starting fresh projects

@TildalWave I know what you mean. This one should be pretty straightforward but still never know I might find something interesting..

that's the spirit :)

8:33 AM
morning all
Rory - did you guys see the aurora from over your way last night?
we tried but too much light pollution
apparently it was seen as far south as Somerset

I've just posted an answer to security.stackexchange.com/questions/52361/… yesterday and I'm totally overwhelmed how much attention this got...

@RoryAlsop hand a look but unfortunately not, not sure if it was just the angle or not vis from here, was relatively clear so I'd have though we should....

9:08 AM
@Andalur - it is a topic which is close to many people's hearts, and while your answer isn't 100% true (there is obviously that risk from any add-on or extension) it is a pragmatic and sensible answer.
in summary - good work :-)

@Andalur it is a great and concise answer (as @RoryAlsop has told you), but the other answer is great also since it complements very good your very response
In fact yesterday I was talking here about that =)

that is another good reason why there has been so much attention: 2 answers which have, on the face of it, opposing content. It always helps where folks can agree with one or the other:-)
I have upvoted both as they are both broadly correct

@RoryAlsop did that, been there =)

@kiBytes - I hadn't realised I missed that conversation yesterday. I saw the dubstep wubwub chat, but somehow missed the on-topic stuff :-)

dubstep? go for electroswing!
9_9

9:20 AM
that may be better (I don't know what electroswing is, but it must be better than dubstep)

morning @kalina :-)

o/

@kiBytes - at work, so can't check that out until later

don't worry I believe you are not really missing anything =)

9:36 AM
@RoryAlsop Well it doesn't sounds good, at least for a synthpop-fan like I am.

ok, now I need an example of synthpop xD

@kiBytes Depeche Mode, OMD, a-ha, Kraftwerk etc. pp.

@Andalur I can enjoy that as well, but I am not in the mood xD

This morning I'm mostly doing a 70's thing at the moment it's the Jam and Eton Rifles.

Oooo - nice
Had a 4 hour band meeting last night, sat in Bannermans in Edinburgh, and the jukebox there is awesome. Vinnie Moore, Judas Priest, Ministry, Metallica, Pantera, GWAR, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam... etc

9:44 AM
GWAR lol

9:54 AM
I am more into jazz, soul, blues, you know the 50's, 60's stuff...
40's...

Well 40's music isn't so good in Germany :D

and electro-derivates xD (but I can enjoy anything, even dubstep and hip-hop)
@Andalur Mein Musik xD

Blues is definitely my genre of choice, and blues based rock/metal work for me too. All the stuff I play in the band is actually blues based
GWAR are fun live. Not really my kind of music (a bit too heavy and shouty for me) but they do a good stage show

@RoryAlsop I think I'm hooked with the electrostatic noise of the old recordings I like that for some reason...

yeah - I still have an old tape deck that I love the sound of
and I miss my old radiogram for vinyl

9:59 AM
God you guys are sounding so old right now...

Ok, I don't need that, I'm ok with my spotify account and the mp3 versions of old recordings (I find the vinyl-vintage stuff a bit of a hype)
Great music is always young =D, no matter the age =)

never gets old..

Vinyl is good. Live is good. Produced studio material can be good, but often loses energy/warmth
mp3's can be good at sensible bit rates, but devices such as all Apple products have really bad mp3 fidelity
good MP3 players are so much better

I don't know @RoryAlsop , I believe in Nyquist-Shannon...

NS works - yes, but ipods have such poor reproduction that NS doesn't really come into it

10:07 AM
Well I guess that it really depends on the chipset, I read an article once

the physics around needle rates etc for vinyl produce such an amazing warmth
yes it does. Apple have not gone down the route of high quality audio
unfortunately
they have gone down the bare minimum consumer acceptable route

it talked about Apple changing the chipset from one which was great to another that it is just fine...

just fine may be an overstatement

I can't remember the iPod or iPhone version

their cost savings were impressive

10:08 AM
@RoryAlsop The iPhone 4 has a damn good DAC chip. As do most of the older iPods.

and many normal humans don't care about audio fidelity, so the model works

It's the amp thats lacking, but you can always use an external one if you really care.

@Terry - hmmm. I'm tempted to entirely disagree with you, but while at work I'll struggle to pull the data

@TerryChia External amp on iPod?

it's an 'okay' implementation

10:10 AM
@RoryAlsop I match that definition, I am ok as long as the sound is fine enough
For my standards my iPhone 4S sounds fine with spotify in max quality

@RoryAlsop Well, damn good as far as consumer products go. It doesn't compare to the audiophile type players but those are clunky.

In most cases I would rather not listen at all, than listen to something with sound quality that I dislike
I don't listen to the radio at all
I only ever use my phone for audio if someone is trying to indicate a band I may wish to listen to, or there is a backing track I need to learn

@RoryAlsop I am ok with the radio most of the time, but It is true that some songs sound really bad...

apparently I'm so tired I can't even spell my own name today

@RoryAlsop That's.... really extreme. I care about SQ (I'm using expensive in ears after all....) but outside noise really cancels out the minor stuff.

10:12 AM
In the car I have my empeg, which has audio reproduction so far in advance of anything else I can buy that I don't see any alternative (in fact I bought 3 so I can have one at home and a spare in case of damage)
It's one of those areas I am a bit annoying about, I think. It's just an area that is so easy to get right if companies are willing to spend a bit, that it frustrates me that they don't offer decent sound quality as standard
And my lead singer is so much more extreme than me. At home he only uses Genelec speakers that cost many thousands each - specifically for their flat response, hooked in with a sound system that costs a year's salary....
(to be fair - he does produce some excellent sound for the band, so he must know his stuff)

My car has a professional audio system (BMW) I don't really know how good it is from an expert point of view

@Terry - to be honest, I never really liked radio anyway - too much talking. I did enjoy it when I was little and made my own cats whisker set,but that's different

@kiBytes If it's those consumer type ones, probably really bad.

BMW have pretty good speakers, but the actual audio kit is about average

@RoryAlsop Heyyyy, no one is talking about radio. I agree that sucks. :P My setup is my iPhone 5s hooked up to my Westone 4 reshelled customs.

10:17 AM
@TerryChia it does sound great (from my point of view, of course) it even has HiFi loudspeaker and built in equalizer
Unfortunately the car doesn't have the best acoustic or outside noise isolation...

@kiBytes Well, my smartphone has an equalizer too, but if I use the internal speaker it sounds of course terrible.

I generally think that individuals should have a sound system that sounds good to them, but I wish manufacturers could provide better for those that want it without ramping the cost up to stupid amounts
@kiBytes - BMW's tend to be okay at noise reduction/soundproofing. What model do you have

@RoryAlsop That is exactly what I think, I really envy people who has this extra perception with the sound

@kiBytes envy

@LucasKauffman I must say that I bought it last september and it is the 2003 model

10:23 AM
@kiBytes ah :p

And I still find myself a bit uncomfortable when talking about it and the amount of attention it drags...

@kiBytes do you have a bluetooth earpiece?
those are mandatory with that type of car

But it is great!

but I haven't got the bluetooth earpiece XD it has the mic integrated in the steerwheel and all the stuff...

10:25 AM
@RoryAlsop We wanted to rent a Golf here in Norway but got a free upgrade to a Volvo V40, the sound in there is just magnificent

on the other hand, since my standards for music quality are lower than the hifi guys
I can enjoy music in most places xD
now, how can I remove some chat lines? xD
Well I will flag a few since I prefer not bringing my car thing with the kibytes profile
Thank you to the guy that removed it =)

You know that this is security SE, where people should know beforehand what kind of private information to post and what not?^^

@kiBytes you're right if I drove a Bugatti Veyron like you I'd probably want not to see a record of that too
:)

@Andalur yes but it is also a friendly site, if I think about this I don't really have a problem with that, but I just prefer random people not knowing that
> Your recent moderator chat flag was inappropriate and declined. Please use moderator flags in chat only in very serious situations.
Ok =)
I will keep that in mind for the next time...

10:55 AM
GUYS IT'S QUESTION OF THE WEEK TIME
QUESTION
OF
THE
WEEK

@kalina nicely volunteered there
@RoryAlsop look a volunteer

no.

@kalina you mention it, you volunteer, those are the rules

listen, if you want My Little Pony fanfics on your blog, then sure, let's do this

did you not wonder why the DMZ was always so quite at those times
@kalina don't try that I've seen you post techy stuff

10:56 AM
but I assure you, it will be your fault, not mine

you can do a post on SQL server security

pssh, you've never seen me post anything technical

@kalina yeah that SQL query thing on SO

that was casual stuff
certainly nothing technical there
all children over the age of 5 should be able to do that

sounded technical to me

@kalina and if it's so easy you should be able to do a great blog post on it :op
@ManishEarth I didn't need to know that existed... eww!
2

3 mins ago, by kalina
no.

@kalina rulebreaker

You guys accept a more business approach security topic for the QOTW?
I have a little paper ongoing (in Spanish) that I could translate into English for your blog
Also we could prepare something different for April the first

QoTW should have been published now

11:03 AM
(something like It is time to roll your own)

@RоryMcCune Quite what? ;)

I finished it off yesterday and think I scheduled it correctly - might be 1pm, not sure
might be in 1 hour ...

@TRiG thank you typosville fill in the blanks...

I'm not quite time-synched today

@RoryAlsop rdate -s ntp.rory.net

11:05 AM
from this iPad?

@RoryAlsop well it can have an SSH client :)

it doesn't

@RoryAlsop well I did say "can have" :) You mean that $employer don't realise that all iPads need SSH clients!
Tsch

hahahaha @TRiG. Yes, I know that, I'm just not with clock/ntp/watch/phone and I know that the DMZ clock may not be my local clock
$employer may notcare, and $me might not want to have to use the iPad any more than necessary

11:07 AM
there you go web based SSH
I'm sure that's completely trustworthy

lol

@RоryMcCune "
IMPORTANT NOTE: When using the consoleFISH (or any other web SSH client) you have to be aware of the fact that all data you send is available in unencrypted form at the tunnelling server, where (theoretically) it could be read. **It is thus important that you trust our security policies** when connecting to your servers via the secure shell client provided on this site. For further details please consult our notes on web shell security."

@kiBytes yeah at least they're saying explicitly "you have to trust us"

That is, completely trustworthy, they can't be lying xD

bet you it still doesn't stop people using it for sensitive stuff

11:11 AM
I have opened a bug today in one of our systems
it seems like they have to use both private key and certificate to sign some data and store the serial number of the certificate used
but they really don't bother to verify that the certificate they are reading the serial from correspond to the private key they are using
so I was making a test (and I didn't really know how this stuff was working) and I changed only the private key
and the system was telling me that everything was smooth and great but when verifying the signature with another application an alarm arise
Well, the responsible of the system thinks that it is not a bug and that I am very picky
:(

@kalina - thanks for volunteering to help with blog posts :-)

@RoryAlsop Have you not noticed how @AviD is always missing when it comes to QOTW time?

heh - it's Friday, isn't that the weekend there?

It is carnival (mardi gras) this weekend in Spain =D

@RoryAlsop hey once you approve my flags I get the deputy badge

11:20 AM
@RoryAlsop DENY! DENY!

...

@kalina .. .... ..

@RоryMcCune ... .. ... .. ...

what can I say, site #21st deputy

@kalina cheeeeevooooo whoooooore

11:46 AM
@TerryChia hahahaha, as @RoryAlsop says it is weekend.... I spend most of the day upstairs cleaning, cooking, and kidsing.

@AviD Write the damn post and I'll stop bugging you. ;)

@kalina - dammit, if I'd known that...
it's okay - I think I rejected 1 of them

@TerryChia im sure I dont know what we're talking about 0:-)

@RoryAlsop now now, if you start rejecting them just because I'm the one raising them I'll take it personally

heh
I think you know how I approach them. That said, It doesn't tell who raised them, but it is obvious which ones are yours :-)

11:48 AM
only because of my unique style

... That's probably true, yes.

roryalsop on February 28, 2014

Camil Staps asked this question back in April 2013, as although it is generally accepted that using a BIOS password is good practice, he couldn’t see what protection this would provide, given, in his words, “…there aren’t really interesting settings in the BIOS, are there?”

While Camil reckoned that the BIOS only holds things like date and time, and enabling drives etc., the answers and comments point out some of the risks, both in relying on a BIOS password and in thinking the BIOS is not important! …

Could somebody explain me how this QoTW works?
How can I propose one, how can I vote for one
and all that stuff?

that link higher up that @Terry posted about @AviD - is a meta post collecting questions. It should explain it.

Q: Requests for Question of The Week blog posts

Rory AlsopSince starting the Security Stack Exchange Blog on 15 July 2011 we have some excellent blog posts, and a large number of these are from our Question of the Week posts. Going forwards, it is probably simplest to post your favourite Questions of the week as answers on this question, and vote for yo...

12:08 PM
I have read that and I still have the same questions:

write an answer suggesting questions you would like to see on the blog

1. How do I propose a QOTW? Just proposing one at meta? Is there any weekly question on META? Should we use always the same?

vote ones up or down
always use that one. Once they get posted I delete them off from the answers on that meta question

@RoryAlsop ah, ok
so in that very same thread I can add an answer
and it gets voted until it is published or ignored forever

yup

12:10 PM
wooo
things to downvote
downvotes all the things

downvote this @kalina!

@kiBytes downvotes @kiBytes

A: Requests for Question of The Week blog posts

kiBytesI propose a question regarding this topic: Is Adblock (Plus) a security risk? The article itself doesn't need to center itself in the AdBlock thing, but it really can go further into the security implications about browser's plugin. I would love to help with the writing =)

so @RoryAlsop I believe that is the way more or less...

@kiBytes Yep, now go write it up. ;)

@TerryChia I will, eventually =)
Is there any License thing with the writings?
Because I may use it for my blog-to-be thing
(in Spanish)

12:21 PM
@kiBytes CC license like all SE content I believe.
I usually cross post the stuff I write on my own blog.

@TerryChia ah, ok, great I am trying to collaborate with a "serious" published magazine in Spain so I wouldn't like to have problems with the Licenses (if I cross-post, publish any)

@kiBytes Better clarify with @RoryAlsop though.

I will when the time comes =)

Q: What's the correct way to verify an SSL certificate in Win32?

briangreeneryI want to verify an SSL certificate in Win32 using C++. I think I want to use the Cert* API so that I can get the benefit of the Windows certificate store. This is what I've come up with. Is it correct? Is there a better way to do this? Am I doing anything wrong? bool IsValidSSLCertificate(...

500 free stack overflow rep for a good answer in the next 23 hrs^^
Sorry to spam it in here but I really don't want to have to award the bounty to the only answer that's currently on there

@kiBytes - then when you go to the security.blogoverflow.com site I think you can use OpenID to register. Check to see if you can set yourself up as a contributor role - if not, I can change a subscriber to a contributor very easily
@DaveR - good call.
Guys -go give Dave some good answers, stat!

By the way, I know it's Windows and I can only apologise :-P

@DaveRandom It's not so much Windows as C++. :P
C++ is awful. ;)

@TerryChia not that I particularly wish to get involved in language wars, but your preferred option would be...?

@DaveRandom I really rather just use C for low level stuff. :P

12:45 PM
@TerryChia Oh right OK, well actually my specific use case is C, although you won't like that use case either
(PHP src)

@DaveRandom Ah see, that leaves you wide open to mocking in this room. ;)
Ok, I'm done kidding. /backtowork

@TerryChia I am fully aware of that, I don't pretend otherwise :-P although in fairness, the whole point of this exercise is to make PHP's core security better, hence github.com/DaveRandom/php-src/commit/… is my real use case, but since my verify code is almost identical to that question I bountied the linked q instead of asking a new one
I'm basically leveraging openssl.org/docs/ssl/SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback.html to get at the Windows native cert store

@TerryChia Apparently, since I got the OSCP course between 01 July 2013 and 31 October 2013, I can upgrade to PWK for $50 only. Sweet!

@Adnan Ah neat!

going home now, later!

12:56 PM
@kiBytes See you!

1:30 PM
I find it amusing that Durex condoms were made by a company called SSL International. You know, SSL, for extra protection.
4
Ah, I'm easily amused.
3

@deed02392 They're also amusing.
@AviD I wonder if "Heroes: Reborn" is code for "Heroes: With Actual Planning"

@ScottPack Actually, I have to agree with @deed02392. It's kind of assholish to reply with lmgtfy links to the regulars here.
It's safe to assume that the asker had indeed Googled the issue already.

To be fair, I also don't do that to people that I don't have some level of comfort with. I.e. I wouldn't have done it to a non-regular.
Also. Agreeing? With somebody other than me? What are you? Some kind of sociopath?

@ScottPack Good one.
No, actually, it's pretty good :D

I appreciate the encouragement, it's still early. I've only started my first cup.

2:02 PM
@ScottPack Taken out of context, that sounds really funny.

2:16 PM
@Adnan and just like SSL, the protection fails quickly if you don't cover the whole thing
or if you poke a bunch of holes in it

@Adnan What happens if someone uses sslstrip? ;)

@TerryChia That person might get pregnant.

@TerryChia depends, if they misuse your "information" or leave any viruses behind

So i get to spend a fair portion of today training some people from NASA
user image
3
cc:/ @ScottPack @RoryA @Adnan

@DavidFreitag What sort of training? And where?

2:24 PM
I mean, it's only NASA langley so it isn't like i'm going to be hanging out with rocket scientists all day...
@Iszi Training them on the specifications of one of our Instruments

@DavidFreitag Ew. I don't need to know the specs of your "instrument", thanks. I don't even think I want to know why NASA wants to know.
3

@Iszi They're going to be buying a bucket load of our hypoxia simulators. Apparently NASA wants to start training regular commercial pilots like they do with Airforce and Navy pilots

@Iszi It may be good martian bait.

@DavidFreitag That's not true. She'll leave you empty and alone when you need her most.

@ScottPack I wouldn't know, but i suppose you reach the bottom of the bottle eventually

2:32 PM
For sufficiently short definitions of "eventually".

@DavidFreitag Oh yeah, your hypoxia simulators. My ex would kill to try one of those.

hypoxia simulator

Man, Mt Gox has become a real funny story. :P

@TerryChia Do tell/link.

@Adnan They lost over 400 mil worth of BTC and is filing for bankruptcy.

2:38 PM
They lost all money

(I lost about 12k EUR with them, by the way. Motherduckers!)

@Adnan What? You mean a belt?

@Adnan you had your coins with Gox?

@Adnan Ouch....

guess no beers huh :(

2:39 PM
@ScottPack Believe it or not, it doesn't work as efficiently as hands. Using your hands, you can balance the pressure on the air ways and the major arteries to achieve the best result.
@LucasKauffman Only about 35 BTC.

At the expense of telltale bruising.

@ScottPack You see, that's the thing. She loved being asked about the bruises on her neck and wrists.

Goddamnit @tylerl!

Some people, they're just difficult to understand.
@TerryChia I kind of deserve it. I was told many times to take my money and put it in an EU-based market.

@Adnan she liked that you strangled her?

2:42 PM
@Adnan Why not just keep it in a offline wallet..?

@TerryChia easyness

@Adnan Kinky

I store my coins on two exchanges

@LucasKauffman Not really worth the risk though...
At least for such huge amounts.

@TerryChia I kept a bit more than half of it in my wallet. I needed about 20-30 BTC ready for quick exchange.

2:43 PM
@TerryChia that's nothing, there was a guy on reddit who had 7.800 coins on gox

@LucasKauffman Lmao.

@LucasKauffman Right after spanking, slapping, and forced sex, this seems to be one of the most common fetishes.
I, too, was surprised to know that.

@Adnan I thought you were trying to build up a reputable public profile? ;)
Might wanna stop discussing your sex life here.

@LucasKauffman :|

Wow

2:45 PM
@LucasKauffman You know better not to ask this outside Skype.

That's low blow.
Of course, @Adnan wouldn't know about that any longer.

@ScottPack why the dude is womanator o.O

*some weak comment about how you guys oppress me for my life style, all while shoving it right in your throats*
my life style, I mean.

sounds like Kalina

Holy crap. I just learned that Leviton is a 100yr old company that's only had 3 CEOs.

2:54 PM
@ScottPack wow
that's kind of nuts
family business?
seems like generally you get that when a family controls the board

Maybe, I'm not sure.
From my understanding they're pretty big to be a proper family business, but I've never really lookd.
