00:00 - 20:0020:00 - 23:00

8:00 PM
@LucasKauffman So you do security stuff for their clients?

@Adnan yea
that's what makes it so diverse
you get to go on different engagements
like 2 weeks here
then 2 weeks there

@RoryMcCune No no, it's a national financial institute. They handle financial auditing for government agencies.

@Adnan ah the big 4 arent a financial institution

@LucasKauffman I never even mentioned the big 4.

@Adnan ah I thought you were going there :P

8:03 PM
@LucasKauffman I wish.

@Adnan whats stopping you?

@Adnan that's a dangerous wish

@LucasKauffman Lack of experience.

@Adnan mmm I had none when I started

@LucasKauffman Did yous start a normal position or an internship?

8:05 PM
@Adnan btw I know IOActive is looking for source code reviewers

@RoryMcCune Really? Why?

@Adnan Experience is a lantern which sheds light on the path you have already walked through.
7

@Adnan normal psotion
@Adnan are you uk based?

@ThomasPornin It would be nice if you were responsible for candidate selection.
@LucasKauffman Finland.

@Adnan well the big-4 are an ... interesting employer in my experience. On the one hand a great way to get experience in the field, on the other they don't understand techies, they work their staff very hard and the paperwork/policies make things hard in a lot of cases where they shouldn't be....

8:07 PM
ah thats IOActive is looking for the UK
I know Wim Remes was looking for resources

@Adnan every company has it's downsides, I've tried a variety. I'd say that big-4 are a good place to start off at for the fast experience reason but unless you want to be a partner, they aren't a good bet after a while as the work level is usually v. high...

@RoryMcCune New term in this context as well. What's a "partner"?

@Adnan they own the company

@Adnan partner is the highest level of a big-4 and it's where they make the big money. UK partners were making £500k a year when I was there.

Partner = part owner of the firm. Takes a lot of the risk and a lot of the money
@rorym - top UK partner was making over 8 times that!

8:10 PM
@Adnan they have a load of risk there as @RoryAlsop says. Theoretically they can loose their house / possessions if a job goes wrong....
@RoryAlsop nice (well for them!)

Yuukh! I'm not into that.

@RoryAlsop is the risk the same for an advisory partner as an audit partner

@Adnan yeah me neither, which is why I didn't stay :) They can still be good places to work for a while, but not somewhere long term...

@Adnan It's how professional firms (accounting firms, law firms, consulting firms) are often organized. You have partners who own and run the firm, and associates who do the bulk of the work.

@RoryMcCune Unless you make partner. Which involves a lot of work and ability to sell business.

8:12 PM
@Xander Since all of this is new to me, I'll assume we're talking about something like Boston Legal.

@JeffFerland and no social life

@Adnan Yes, exactly.

@JeffFerland indeed you need to be a great salesman + able to deal with loads of pressure + be a great politician + be lucky :)
@LucasKauffman oh yeah and give up 10+ years of your life to the company :)

I remember meeting our EMEIA managing partner

I have respect for the people who do it crazy hard to achieve...

8:13 PM
and realizing he was given these speeches in all other countries

I've always thought that it would be best to have the person driving a company be somebody who sucks a politics and gives you everything straight. Just keep them from the customers.

he's never home
@JeffFerland the thing is that partner's are in general the ones doing the sales, unless you are a managing partner, I'm not sure if they do sales too, but I suppose so

@JeffFerland heh only problem is how they get started out. Tech companies can work like that as the idea is the kernel of it, but consultancy is ultimately a people profession, so the leaders need to be good at that kind of stuff...

One of the reasons I left EY was not seeing my family as I was never home

@LucasKauffman @RoryMcCune Having spent 7 years in a CPA firm, yup and yup.

8:15 PM
I enjoy the people managing bit though

Sometimes you can also become partner if you arent doing any sales, like I know EY Netherlands recruited the ex-prime minister of their country

As well add the techy bit

@RoryAlsop I really liked CEO wrangling.

Heh, yes @Jefff

... which is probably why I've dragged the Oracle VP fellow into our office for two days straight. I wonder what was on his calendar before he talked to me.

8:17 PM
:878737 ahh yeah the japanese have a name for that. Amakudari which means descent from heaven

to be honest I only have had one sour experience so far, which was a partner bailing on the team making a good manager quit to resolve a problem
but that partner was gently pointed to the door I heard
anyway /rant ^^

@RoryAlsop BTW have been merrily covering the Shetland Isles in Portal requests today. I hope there's not an upper limit on how many you can have outstanding... Today I got the most northerly point in the UK and the most Northerly bus stop in the UK :)

@RoryAlsop how did the Travel elections go?
Congratulations to all! Well deserved results. — Rory Alsop 21 mins ago
Oh :( Well, better luck next time!

8:42 PM
@rorym - doesn't look like any restrictions. Cool submissions!
@tildal - sadly I came last :-(
2

@RoryAlsop You're still on top here!
2

@RoryAlsop coolio. Well I've submitted about 20'ish around shetland so far, so it'll be well represented if they all get accepted :)

9:22 PM
@Lucas, @RoryM, @RoryA, @Xander, and @Jeff. Thank you all for the help. I guess now I have a better understanding of all that fuss.

@Adnan It occurs to me that I really screwed up. First off, I didn't charge you anything. Second off, you have a good understanding, so I've also lost future opportunities to charge you as well. I make a lousy consultant.
4

@JeffFerland I can offer you understanding-erasing training for 150€/hour.
On a different topic. Has any of you ever played with tunneling HTTP over SSH over DNS?

@Lucas I've been using OzymanDNS for little over 3 years, but it's very slow (high latency). It's generally not so well-written. Have you personally tried iodine?

@Adnan yea I used, I was able to surf comfortably
as long as you aren't using it to download tons of data you should be fine

9:32 PM
@LucasKauffman I mainly use it to check my email in the airport.

But that's illegal :o

@LucasKauffman Really?! Interesting..
In that case I'll stop doing it.

the network I used it on was pretty reliable though
I"m not sure if the network is slower how this will impact the performance

@LucasKauffman My home connection is pretty neat, and I've used OzymanDNS in more than 12 airports, same shitty performance.

Well can't say I was unhappy with iodine

10:21 PM
@Polynomial I forgot to ask you if you'd want an invite to thebox.bz?

@TildalWave You're there? :D

@Adnan Yar ;) I've 10 invites left but I need a guarantee that you'll share, not just leech

@TildalWave Oh no, I'm already there. I have 285GB up (3.4 ratio). I was just surprised to find someone from there here.

@Adnan I'm not maintaining my ratio that well lately, but it's in + and I'm not using the site so much any more. Thought @Poly would find it useful since he said his TV HDD died

@TildalWave, yeah I haven't been active there as well. Recently I'm more focused on BitMe, Waffles, and TvT.com

10:31 PM
@Adnan UL: 299.71 GB DL: 270.72 GB (used to be ~ 3:1 before)

@TildalWave But to replace a hard drive worth of TV shows will take lots of time and seeding effort. I don't think it's a very good solution.

It's still a good source for Blighty TV... I'm on UKNova also but haven't been to the site in years

@TildalWave Daaamn.. we have an experienced private torrenter here.

@Adnan Yar! :) actually... Jolly Roger :))

@TildalWave I Should've expected. Slovenian :D

10:36 PM
@Adnan Oh like that tells you much. :P

@Adnan oh, I used to know this, but then I applied it to itself and I lost it
2

@TildalWave Well, I know that you guys are banned on RevolutionTT, What.CD, and HDBits.
@Gilles Nice one! :D

@Adnan Wasn't me. Honest!
@Adnan hmmm actually, are sure about these ones? I'm not sure why it would even apply, you sure you're not thinking of Serbia? (we don't even border it, btw)
I'm on HQShare just fine... never used the ones you mention, but I don't see any ban in place :O

@TildalWave Actually now that you say it, I think it is Slovakia.
I probably confused the two names

@Adnan nope, we don't border Slovakia neither LOL

10:44 PM
@TildalWave Who said anything about borders?
I'm talking about the names.. they're easily confused, at least I easily confuse them.

@Adnan Just so you know you were not even close :P

@TildalWave Well, to me, all countries that use the word "Kurva" are the same :D

@Adnan we don't

@TildalWave Really? Awwh! What do you use instead?

@Adnan Kurba :)))))

10:47 PM
@TildalWave Oh please! It's the same!

@Adnan well OK then, I succumb
On a side note, I kinda hate when people (especially the ones here) think we're all of Slavic origins. We had a lot of culture here way before Slavs even "swam that river" as we say it here. It's an interesting place historically, with Celt, German, Illyrian, Venetian,... roots way before Slavs came. I would say that still shows and there are great differences with other "Slavic" nations. But yeah... who cares LOL
And I hate the name of my country and have no idea what it's supposed to even mean (tho it's obvious what it's supposed to suggest). Fuck commies!
