@Davïd I don’t get it; there’s nothing there. I tried ‏ all over the place and nothing helped. It worked because you touched it. No fair. :-(
But thanks. :-)

11:37 AM
@Susan You possibly might have wanted ‎ ... hmmm....

12:02 PM
@Davïd Arg, yes. I also tried &#8207. I still don’t understand the “embedded” thing, but at least I now have two ways to make it work. Next time. Hopefully. Please stick around just in case.

12:22 PM
@Susan Ha! Btw - Barton has an interesting discussion of that problem (see half-way down page 105, onto 106).

@Davïd Thanks. The Greek question was kind of too easy. I wouldn’t have tackled the Hebrew.
Does archive.org normally scroll down like that?
Who is “Ha., who practically rewrites the book”? (From the part on v. 9.)

@Susan It does if you put the viewer app into mode/1up. It has several different viewing modes actually.

@Susan I haven't read this one yet, but it looks worth consulting.

@Caleb It had never occurred to me to change that. OK, interesting.

@Susan Paul Haupt. (And what Caleb said.)
@Caleb @Susan I generally use the 1-up view if I want to target the page/location a bit more closely, 2-up for general reading/context.

12:40 PM
@Davïd That would’ve been helpful in searching for my BDB reference. That took me forever, especially since I didn’t realize it ignores the matres for alphabetization. (Or so I gather.)

Q: What did God put into the human heart according to the Masoretic Text of Ecclesiastes 3:11?

DavïdEcclesiastes [= Qohelet/Kohelet] 3:11bα reads this way: גַּ֤ם אֶת־הָעֹלָם֙ נָתַ֣ן בְּלִבָּ֔ם gam ʾet-hāʿōlām nātan bəlibbāmᵃ Also he has put העלם in their heart ᵃ antecedent is bənê hāʾādām in 3:10. This has traditionally been read as indicated in the transliteration above -- as if it ...

^^^^ There you go, @Susan! :)

1:36 PM
@Davïd Thanks! And for broadening to "Hebrew" rather than "Masoretic" - more interesting. (Is this ?)

2:24 PM
@Susan mebbe... ;)

2:56 PM
@Davïd Well, if you decide to answer that sometime, maybe this one too. Otherwise it seems to me we need a tag for or or something, because it's different from normal translational issues.
...

@ScottS That was a helpful addition. FWIW, I find the LSJ easier to use than Perseus for this (plus the added value of being the latest edition, rather than the old Liddell & Scott, butno Jones). You can just type into the LSJ headword... box and hits wll autosuggest/complete.
@Susan Or even just , although "conjectural" they almost certainly are. Or maybe might get a few candidates.
@Susan Yeah, I realized the original title was a mistake within moments of posting.

@Davïd Where the LXX and MT differ, less conjectural. But there is easier.

@Susan Yep, makes sense to me.

@Davïd I’ve wondered how useful tags are if the person posing the question rarely knows they apply, though.
@Davïd Too bad there’s a character limit.

3:37 PM
@Davïd OK but this is the other problem I have. In order to bold where one side is Hebrew and the other side is English, the ** have to go on the wrong side of part of it, which I just did and it looks fine, but it’s dumb and I don’t get it. And no amount of ‏ etc. seem to help.

2 hours later…
5:11 PM
@Davïd That site has a daily query limit. At least in my country. - After a while of use, I must wait until the next day. :P
However, at this time I have free access (for a short time) to app.logos.com.

@Davïd @Susan Unless you happen to be in Russia this week, in which case you might not be able to get any formats of anything.

4 hours later…
9:11 PM
@JackDouglas - Do you have a moment for a (gasp!) database question?

@Davïd sure :)
as long as it is not MySQL ;)

@JackDouglas ;) Nope! Just getting you a screenshot....
@JackDouglas Here we go.
I'm using LibO Base -- wanting to get a one-to-one relationship (at red square on screenshot) but failing miserably.
Any idea where the best place is to get guidance on that?
The Libo Base documentation is woeful. :(

so each PTLoad has one StaffSession and vice versa?

Just so
It's meant to be able to manage staff tutoring loads year-on-year.

is PTLoad.SSId nullable?
I mean does every StaffSession have exactly one (not zero) PTLoad

9:18 PM
so the StaffID and SessionID combine to produce a unique "annual" value, and that has one "tutor load" set of data to go with it.
@JackDouglas Yes ... yes?
Think so! :/
unique "annual" value = SSId

the 'normal' way of doing that would be to have one table with all the info in PTLoad and StaffSession, have you a reason not to do that?

I used to do this sort of thing with Access back in the day ... but that was a looong time ago, and I no longer have access to Access (as it were).
@JackDouglas Hmmm...
@JackDouglas I've set this up on analogy to one I used to use in Access -- but it was much more complex, and hung a number of things off that "staff/session"/SSId type value.
Maybe I don't need it in something this simple.
Would there be any alternative to Base that a numpty-user amateur like me could use?

if you do need it, you probably want to switch it round so the FK is from PTLOad to StaffSession, then additionally add a unique constraint on PTLoad.SSId

I checked SoftwareRecs.SE, but the obvious Q&A didn't give much help.

but I dont know LibO specifically
are you using Linux?

9:23 PM
@JackDouglas I tried it the other direction - what would be the primary key in the StaffSession table, then?
@JackDouglas yes

@Davïd still SSId

In access you could have two combined values = a primary key - maybe can do that with Base too

well you could ditch SSId and make (StaffId,SessionId) the PK
but that's a different question
@Davïd I won't suggest Access then :)

@JackDouglas :)

you want the DB to be a file you can copy/send around?
postgresql is a 'proper' database but it's not file-based like Access/LibO

9:28 PM
@JackDouglas So, this sort of thing, then?
@JackDouglas Possibly - for the moment it's "just for me", but if it proves useful, would be valuable to be able to share with colleagues.

hmmm, I may be leading you up the garden path here - you can have it either way round
you just need the unique constraint as well
in the latter case on StaffSession.PTLoadId
in the former case on PTLoad.SSId
pick your poison ;)
but a single table is much easier and simpler if you can get away with it

@JackDouglas :) Just for the banter, these are the "edit" options on the join.
@JackDouglas I think I'll give that a go and see what happens.
That's been useful -- at least (it seems) I'm not barking ... either "mad" or "up the wrong tree"!
Will let you know how I get on. Very handy you were lurking in the Library on a Friday night! :)

'no action' is the usual unless you are sure you want deletes/updates to cascade (sometimes useful, sometimes dangerous)
have fun

@JackDouglas Thanks for the warning, and the other advice - very grateful!
Hope the rest of your weekend improves. ;)
