awesome as a window manager with no desktop environment for myself but it's not for everybody and certainly not a place to start. I don't much care what other people use actually. If I'm setting up a desktop for somebody without extant preferences I'll start them with vanilla Gnome-3 Shell for a while but eventually run them through a few options and let them pick what they like.
