how goes it @sean ?

12 hours later…
1:44 PM
@jrista @chills42 @RowlandShaw somebody needs to handle PotW stuff

3 hours later…
5:10 PM
Hey, I've been noticing that I really like my photos from back when I knew less about the technical side of photography, and I think I'm caring too much about that stuff, rather than the creativity. Do you guys have any suggestions for like, simple little fun projects? Or any other suggestions?

5:21 PM
@VianEsterhuizen follow @dailyshoot on twitter (or go to the website dailyshoot.com). they have simple little assignments every day...i rarely actually do them, but i find that they are good inspiration.
and it's a good stockpile of ideas for when you want to take photos but don't know what to do :)

@L
@laura yeah, that's perfect. Thank you!

you're welcome :) i'm sure there are other sites that do similar things, but that's the one i know off the top of my head

@LauraΨ the dailyshoot is nice

Any more suggestions are of course welcome. Like playing with toy cameras, etc.

@VianEsterhuizen i started just tackling all the different 'types' of photography that'd I'd never known before
most of them you can at least tinker in without a big equipment investment
like astro or macro, etc
i've also heard about methods to help take the technical out of it...like commit to using one lens and only b&w for 6 months

5:27 PM
That's a pretty interesting idea actually, now that I think of it. I do kind of limit myself to what I feel comfortable with and what I feel equipped for.
6 months! Haha. That's a commitment. Yeah, I've been planning on trying that too. It's tough to do I think, but would definitely work.

indeed

similar to @rfusca's suggestion about different types of photography, i often find that looking at or trying different types of art can give me ideas for photos...it can be going to museums/galleries, or fingerpainting at home. there's usually something inspiring to be found in a different medium, if you are an art person generally
(note: you also don't have to be good at a different type of art for it to help get your creativity flowing...i love finger painting nonsense or painting abstract things with acryllics, but i'm not good at either of them :)

@LauraΨ the crowd of people that is 'good' at finger painting is probably incredibly small ;)

@rfusca haha touche. but you get the point :P

;)

5:31 PM
On that note, a co-worker has a calendar of mouth painted artwork and it's incredible. Really surprising.

that is...different

It's in support of a disability of some sort, but it's really impressive.

cool

that's a really interesting. people can be so resourceful...

@rfusca Well, seems there is a new duplicate checking feature added to StackExchange. I can't start a new PotW because the system insists the Aug 29 thread is a duplicate of the Aug 22 thread.
Despite the fact that I've changed the title and body to reflect the new timperiod.
"Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because:
Sorry, this is a duplicate of Weekly Featured Image: Aug 22, '11"

Q: Weekly Featured Image: Aug 29, '11

rfuscaThis is the place to submit and vote on photos for the week of 29 August to be featured on the main site. This contest should showcase your best quality work, demonstrating at least moderate skill with a camera and a general understanding of the artistic aspects of photography. Remember, the sele...

@jrista ;)

did someone....
well, I guess so
why doesn't that topic show up in the list of questions for me?

wierd

and when I tried to submit my own, it said it was a duplicate of the Aug 22 one, not your Aug 29 one...
and something is also wrong with the custom header content
the text and links will not show up

@jrista weird. i also noticed that the header doesn't have text, but the aug. 29 weekly featured image post shows up for me.
post a bug report in meta and the SE developers will see it

the text is actually there
its just underneath the photo

5:47 PM
@jrista @RowlandShaw a mod want to migrate this to the main site:

also strange. either way, definitely sounds like something got broken.

Q: Strobist equipment for beginners

this-MeWhat kind of lighting equipment should i have as a beginner. Basically I want to take some great portrait pictures with a decent lighting equipment. Any suggestion towards strobist accessories ? Thanks

thanks

@rfusca Already on the case

good deal ;)

Was just about to set the site banner, too, but I think I've just been beaten to it

5:51 PM
hehe
@jrista text showing up correctly now

yeah
had to add a hard return, since automatic wrapping was not working for some reason

6:07 PM
ah, ic
craziness

hello all

i'm always shocked when somebody accepts an answer super quick
hey jam

hey

6:50 PM
man, Imre's shot on here meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/1387/… really loses soooo much detail in the small version

7:01 PM
yup
silly size

ya

7:20 PM
Hi guys, can I ask a quick question about image resolution?
I'm a little mixed up about DPI
mega pixels and such.

I can try to help

Thanks! :) It is really some basic guidance
I was asked for digital images of 300 dpi
is that even possible?

Is it being used for print?
It is possible, but completely pointless usless being used for print

They will print it yes

are you using Photoshop?
Also, do you know what size it will be printed at?

7:24 PM
no I am not, I don't currently have it installed, I could install gimp though

How many megapixels on the camera you're using?

@VianEsterhuizen no, I don't really know
@VianEsterhuizen They are from on digital form already up on their website
I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I don't have almost any technical knowledge in this subject.

I'm not familiar with Gimp, but it should be as easy as resizing the image. In Photoshop, there's an option when resizing the image, to convert it to XXX DPI. It's not going to do much for the quality of the photo.
Usually when people ask for 300dpi, they mostly mean they want a high resolution photo for the best possible print quality.

whew. Mental note - few sunsets are worth sprinting for :/

@VianEsterhuizen I'm downloading gimp right now
@VianEsterhuizen That makes some sense!
I will try to find this option in gimp, I'm sure it will have it!

7:30 PM
I'm sure it will too.

@VianEsterhuizen Thanks for the help!

@RowlandShaw lol

Is this a printer requesting this?

@rfusca Just downloading into LR (whilst whiping brow)

Q: Confused about DPI's: Large JPG file to print

IsaacAnd my apologies if this sounds a bit too basic but I can't get my head around this. I have a digital image I took with my camera. 4000x3000 pixels, and GIMP claims that its resolution is 72x72 DPI. I would like to print a thumbnail of this picture in the highest quality possible. What I was to...

7:32 PM
@VianEsterhuizen yes, I am actually helping out a friend (who has no of how to use a computer) so I'm not absolutely sure about the specifics, since HE didn't really ask
@rfusca I'll check that out!! Thanks!

@Trufa np, there's a wealth of info on the site about 'DPI' through searching.

@rfusca yes there is, but I found it quite not helpful in most of the cases, this answer is making me make more sense about it.

@Trufa Ah good.
@RowlandShaw did it turn out ok?

Yeah, I find most stackexchange searches to be of little use to me

@rfusca Looks OK - will chuck up to flickr in a sec

7:37 PM
cool
@VianEsterhuizen lol everybody says that, but never have trouble lol
like that was the second link when searching for 'dpi'
Since this is software related, I wonder if there's another SE site where this user might get a better answer - photo.stackexchange.com/questions/14461/…

What I've noticed is Google search: The more detailed your question, the better the results. SE: The less detailed your question, the better your results.

twiddles thumbs whilst "broadband" uploads

lol

And by "question" i mean query

lol, one of the managers here just threw a keyboard out the door of his office
6

7:43 PM
That is amazing!
hahaha
I've always wanted to see something like that

@rfusca lol

ya, he was screaming on the phone, hung up, and out came a keyboard
you could hear a mouse fart around here right now

hahahaha. Absolutely amazing.

yup

I'm sure there's something you could do to break the tension

7:46 PM
if i squint just right it looks like a model of the solar system

heh
3 of the sunset next to it, by the way :)

8:01 PM
@rfusca lol, can you throw it back in without them seeing you doing it? that would be hilarious

@VianEsterhuizen sorry to bother again.

@Trufa What physical size do you want it printed?

@RowlandShaw I can't tell you the exact size but it will be small, in a brochure
(it also doesn't have to be extremely accurate)
@RowlandShaw I can't tell you the exact size but it will be small, in a brochure

can't see why they would want such a high DPI for such a small print

@JamWheel I'm not sure either :)

8:06 PM
Yeah. I agree. I think the photo as is would probably be okay. Not ideal obviously, but you should be able to get away with it.

@Trufa that would work for 3.4" x 2.5" @ 300 DPI
of course the PPI figure in the EXIF is pure fiction, as it depends on the output device

@RowlandShaw What calculations did you do there?

1024 / 300 and 768 / 300 :)

@RowlandShaw ohhhh
for some reason I was not getting this

It's as simple as that -- you can get some software to save the DPI figure into the file, but it's really a bit meaningless
...as few printers go only by that figure
similarly, with the right sort of image, it could be blown up much bigger

8:17 PM
@RowlandShaw hmm interesting!
So where do the mega pixels come in??

1024 x 768 = 0.7MP
I've had success in the past blowing up crops from a 2MP camera to 3 feet x 2 feet

@RowlandShaw sorry again (I seem to be slow today) what was the math?

megapixels is literally a count of the pixels in an image, so 768 rows of 1024 pixels is roughly 0.7 million (aka mega) pixels

@RowlandShaw ohhh but what does it men then that my camarahas 6 mp or 10 mp? that I can have more pixels by more pixels? nothing more that?

Yeah. "Megapixels" is just a measurement of the digital size of the photo

8:25 PM
so, take the photo I took earlier; It is (5616 pixels x 3744 pixels)
Or roughly 21 million pixels (so 21MP)

Oh, so that wasn't really all that complicated!

I'm sure you could through in some trigonometric functions if you wanted to impress your friends ;)

@Trufa well, of course you'll need to divide by the square root of pi raised to the natural log of the speed to light to be really accurate

and apply ruffini! you should always do that!!

I wonder if you could get plancks constant in there?

8:31 PM
oh, well it was just assumed that you would multiple by that... everybody knows that

well @rfusca @rfusca and @VianEsterhuizen I have to leave to university now. Thank for all the help and forgive my brain speed today
I might still be hangover :)

ciao, have fun at class
lol

that was cruel

@Trufa typical student. Or was that just me?

@RowlandShaw hehe I quit my job last friday so its been quite a crazy weekend

8:34 PM
@Trufa eek, what was your job?

(I quitted before I had to throw around my keyboard)
@rfusca I do SEO, and manage adowrds campaings

ah, ic
i'm sorry ;)

hehe I'm so happy I quit!

@Trufa ya, the ironic thing was that he wasn't even yelling and throwing a fit about work...he was on the phone with this doctor lol
@Trufa well thats good, i wish i could quit my job

@rfusca believe me you would if you were making the pay I was
(less that 500 dollars a month)

8:37 PM
ouch

:(
yep...

Not to make light of your situation but with his doctor!? hahahahaha

I did it for the experience, you have to start somewhere!

"You need to lower your salt intake ..."
"**** THAT!" *throws keyboard*

@VianEsterhuizen I can't imagine it was good news
Well see you later!
Thanks again!!

8:39 PM
@VianEsterhuizen actually it was more like... 'i want more codeine' 'no' throws keyboard
@Trufa ciao!

I'm having trouble keeping in my laughter at work
@Trufa later!

@VianEsterhuizen lol yup :)
luckily i'm home now

go into the office tomorrow and sit at your desk with a crash helmet on

lol
he would not find that funny
but he's not my boss

Or put a target up on the wall outside his door

8:48 PM
well, he almost hit the person who sits right outside his door

LOL - get pipe insulation- the circular kind with a split down one side and fit it round the edges of his keyboard

lol

that would be seriously funny
and a damn good reason to go in early

lol
i'm not going in tomorrow, working from home

go in early, do his keyboard, go home - perfect

8:49 PM
hahahaha
that would be awesome

:)

You would be a legend among you chose to admit it to

at my old place
we used to put tape on the bottom of each others mouses so they wouldn't work

i got in early one day and setup a whole plastic figure cowboy vs indians battle on his desk one day....

among those who you*

8:50 PM
was an 'in' joke and we all knew what it was immediately
well, the CEO employed his daughter on a contract to do some marketing work

@JamWheel oh ya, i did that in the days of the ball mice, I'd tape the rollers inside

and i did it to her - went home and forgot about it

lol NICE

came in the next day - she was incandescent with rage

ya, i had to stop a coworker from calling IT about their mouse once

8:52 PM
turns out her dad the CEO had brought her in early (they arrived at 6am, office normally opens at 9) and she couldn't work because of her mouse
3 HOURS I HAVE BEEN SAT HERE BECAUSE YOU PRANKED ME
CEO shows up "for f&^ks sake James"

@JamWheel hahahahahahahaha

starts having a go at me
"ok ok I am sorry - can I throw a "but" in there though please?"
"... go on"

'but' your daughter's an idiot ? lol

"how many people were in the office at 6am?"
"2 of us"
"and how many PCs are there in the office?"

nice

8:54 PM
"Just don't f^%king do it again, James" <leaves>
lol

lol

I apologised profusely to her afterwards and explained the 'in' joke and how I had forgotten she wasn't in on it
very amusing
got her to admit that perhaps it was a little dim not to think of using one of the other 40 PCs in the office as well
see, i get myself in trouble...

no, its a lil' dim not to inspect your non working mouse

well, yeh
but at a loss for that
40 other PCs
in 3 hours

lol ya

8:56 PM
that hadn't occurred to her

@jamwheel I often unplug peoples mice ever so slightly. Just to the point they stop working

@VianEsterhuizen lol, always fun

She was just using it as an excuse not to work

we pranked a lot in my previous office till somebody took it too far

another fun one
@VianEsterhuizen no, she was genuinely livid with me

8:57 PM
put a woman's 'pad' stuck to a monitor screen

print screen their desktop with everything minimised - set it as wallpaper, hide the task bar and switch off desktop icons...

@jamwheel ridiculous
@rfusca wow. Gutsy

screen of all desktop icons + put it as background + hide actual icons = classic
@JamWheel wow, thats crazy that we both did that at the same time

:)
lol
great minds, once again

indeed
@VianEsterhuizen ya, the pranks ended there

8:59 PM
@VianEsterhuizen a bit ridiculous - she was nice enough, just young - not wise to these things yet - she saw the funny side in the end

@JamWheel thats good

we used to have stress toy wars

@VianEsterhuizen looks like you've got a good shot of winning this week's PotW

stress balls being thrown etc - was quite violent at times
my best mate put a bulldog clip on my ear once
in the office
sneaky git
i chopped him in the leg with a wooden metre ruler though

We used to have a remote fart machine that we would set up in vents in halways and would set up as somebody walked by. They would always do the overly exagerated "Where did that come from?" look just to make sure people knew it was them. Once it worked out so perfect that two guys walked past eachother at the same time at the right spot and each was disgusted with the other
@rfusca It's pretty early to get my hopes up, but that would be nice.

9:03 PM
lol, awesome

haha, fart machine was a good one
at the photo lab I used to work at - we used to booby trap each other's darkroom doors
the guy who used the floor mounted enlarger would often be in doing long exposures on huge prints so we could take ages over it

what were somethings you would do? That reminds me of the dorm room one I always hear about where people would fill the large garbage bins with water, lean it up against the door, and knock on the door.

we had to build in slow release mechanisms because the door opened inwards, he would come out and get covered in coffee creamer powder
we couldn't use liquids cos of the prints

lol

prints were like 1m x 3m sometimes, quite a price in paper
haha, we took the bolts off his chair once, he used to come up to it and chuck himself on it and he did, it flew off the pedestal and deposited him on the floor... RUN!

9:10 PM
Yeah, I figured you wouldn't go to those lengths with prints around. Pretty good though. Sounds like you take your pranks seriously.

where seriously = "too far"
lol
i love being pranked as well
which annoys everyone cos i always laugh as hard as they do
the prints were all 'in house' stuff taken in the studio

Really. I find that a lot more fun if the person has a good sense of humour about it.

hmm two zoo pics this time
maybe i should submit a zoo pic

My last day of work at my job is on Wednesday. I need to do something good before i leave.
Yes, make it a theme. Everyone has at least one good zoo picture.

hmmm

9:20 PM
hello

this might work with a crop across it to make it the right size

@JamWheel very nice shot

@Francesco thanks

yeah. Really nice.
a crop might work but I really like the lines in the photo. Rule of thirds at it's best

@rowland you can always multiply by the planck constant. As everyone knows, it is 1, in the proper systes
system
for that matter also the gravitational constant and the speed of light are 1 in the proper unit system :)

9:25 PM

@VianEsterhuizen thanks,i was thinking for the banner comp, but i can nvr be bothered to crop the image lol
dunno about thirds at its best - is an interesting angle though

can't decide between those two
hmm, neither work great at the small size though

I think the monkey is great

for the banner I would like the second one but with a less distracting background

@Francesco ya, i know :( thats my big problem with it too

9:28 PM
it's a pity because has the right shape to be a banner pic :)

ok submitted the monkey

yeah, the only thing that doesn't work for the second one is the background. Other than that it's a great shot

hey @dialex

Seems this week will be a "zoo week" =P

By the way, with the seagul all I meant is that his eye is almost at the intersection of two 1/3 lines and then his wings almost follow those lines.

9:32 PM
ya, we've discussed having theme weeks btw

thx for warning me about the title ;)

np

Theme weeks owuld be pretty interesting

yup

i think we'd need to announce the theme a week or two before
give people time to create a shot for it if they like

9:34 PM
but I think you shouldn't forget these "free weeks"

oh ya, not every week

maybe you could alternate, "theme" with "free"
;)

maybe like once a month or something

yea yea
like, for example, the first or last week of every month

@jrista - what do you think?

9:35 PM
that's a great idea ;)

Yeah. First week of every month or something. That would work well I think. Then announce the next one while the current one is running

some could be specific like 'bugs' or some could be general like 'constrast' or 'color'

yeah any subject

I used to be on a forum with something similar
that had another rule:

9:36 PM
ya, its a fairly common idea

the winner of the contest would get to choose the next theme
:P

ya, there's a thing like that on a canon macro site that I saw

Yeah. Photo.net has the monthly project too

i'll make a meta post and the community can chime in on the idea

great!

9:39 PM
@rfusca sounds good

cya everyone ;)

Q: Picture of the Week themes

rfuscaIts been brought up that it might be interesting to devote the occasional picture of the week contest to a theme. I'm envisioning announcing a theme 3-4 weeks ahead and then accepting entries around that theme. (We could also publish a full list of themes far in advance.) Pictures wouldn't nee...

@DiAlex ciao

10:06 PM
good night everybody :)
@jrista I worked on some stairs photo but still no results worth to share :)

@Francesco night!

@rfusca :) bye!
