6:00 PM
@RubberDuck Thank you thank you I'm working on this since 10... :(

You don't find anything.... you have a value, so you decide what to do with it

That ^

Your input is 1, so you output "POSITIVE" or whatever it is that your logic is supposed to do. Now do you know where to output? What do you need to do with the results?

Can you write example code, because I don't understand. Tell me if in this rst is 1. We know result is:
1
2
3
Show me is here 1 or not?
Use code please

I cannot write any code because I dont know what the code is supposed to be doing!!!!!!

6:04 PM
@RubberDuck I wonder if my file content is exceeding the maximum limit for a String...

It usually goes input > logic > output

I suppose that's possible.

Check if in rst is 1
Public Sub NatureOpinion(pOpinionId As Long)
Set rstNatureOpinion = Storage.GetDataSource("Volcano", "RstToNatureOpinion", AccessMode_ReadWrite, pOpinionId).Rst
End Sub
that is my rst
query
select tag from tags where opinion_id=:ID

@RubberDuck I gave up SU because some of the people there are not very nice - but still recommend that site for quite a few Qs posted to SO (though mainly installation/short-cut keys/charts and the like). Formulae I like HERE and would point out that often people ask for, say, VBA and seem delighted with other solutions - which they would miss out on if formulae and the like were exclusively SU.

I can see that. I love SO answers that say "Don't use VBA. Here's a formula."

6:16 PM
Sometimes even a formula is "overkill".

    FileNameAndPath = (InputDirPath & InputFileName)
    Debug.Print ("Processing: " & FileNameAndPath)
        ' IO operations
        Dim fileToCopy As File
        Set fileToCopy = FSO.GetFile(FileNameAndPath)

        Dim streamToCopy As TextStream
        Set streamToCopy = fileToCopy.OpenAsTextStream(ForReading)

        'Dim text As String
        'text = streamToCopy.ReadAll

        Stream.WriteLine streamToCopy.ReadAll
        'Stream.WriteLine text
    Debug.Print ("Appended to " & OutputFileName & ": " & FileNameAndPath)
@RubberDuck I don't think that's even it... This is also giving invalid call

@RubberDuck I deleted my meta 'answer' re macros for lack of interest but did mean to ask whether you might want the stats to show progress. (I gave up when the only changes seemed to be those I made and after about 2,000 was not prepared to continue unassisted).

Ah I think I found a clue

I gave up.
No idea where it stands.

I deleted files that were originally CSV (where the extension was changed by another sub) and it seems to be going through OK so far

6:23 PM
@RubberDuck Problem is everyone has given up - though in a rather forlorn hope I still generally delete [macros] from new questions.

HOLY CARP that was it.
Now I feel stupid. It works good for regular txt files

@pnuts I've just not had time. Between work and our open source project. I barely look at SO at all these days.
@Phrancis very good. Perhaps a filter is called for?

@RubberDuck Yeah the filter will be in another sub (used to copy files as a batch)

@Phrancis Proud of ya. Well done sir.

6:31 PM
Evidently the conversion from Excel file to text file must have carried over some meta-data with it that VBA probably went WTF when I tried to shove it into a String lol.
My original code looping over the array later works just fine now too

@RubberDuck You have done more than your share, are adding much greater value elsewhere and there are ~9 million others that might (but don't!) shoulder at least a straw or two each of the SO burden. Anyway SE is partly the issue (for not making mass edits easier). mehow deleted about 500 [vba] tags in the space of a few hours - shame they weren't [macros] instead!

@pnuts I'm sure that clean up needed to happen to.

No it did NOT. Just vindictiveness against brettdj.

Oh... I wouldn't know about that.

6:47 PM
hey lads

@It'sbeenapleasure another name?
what's with this one?

I am deleting this account and leaving SO for good

nooooooo!!!

just wanted to say thanks for the happy days and wish you luck in the future

@It'sbeenapleasure are you still maintaining vba4all.com?

6:48 PM
probably gonna quit that too as well

oh... I wanted to ask you if you could add Rubberduck there :/

@it's Care to give a hint as to what this was all about?

well it's been a pleasure! ...leaving SE in general, or just SO?

i can sure
what do you want me to add

rubberduck-vba.com?
that'd be awesome =)

6:50 PM
@It'sbeenapleasure It's been nice having you around as one of the VBA experts, hope you're not gone forever!

yeah thats not a problem.
any description youd prefer?

well the Twitter account says "Rubberduck is a COM add-in for the VBA Editor (VBE) that provides an amazing range of functionalities that take programming in VBA to a whole new level"
could be that I guess

I really hope to see you around, you're not disappearing from the WWW right?

@It'sbeenapleasure and to you friend. Stay in touch. I'm not hard to find elsewhere online.
It's been a pleasure and an honor.

^ dont STAR that
Rubberduck is on the main page vba4all.com

Amazing! thanks a million!
vba4all is already on our About box ;)
@It'sbeenapleasure noted!

oh btw: ever heard of resharper?
do a reVBAtor ;)

lol it's been my inspiration for things like Refactor/Extract Method and Refactor/Rename :)

There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things. – Phil Karlton How many VBA modules declare variables looking like this: Dim v As Long, vWSs As Variant, Mrange As Range, Vrange As Range Or like this: Dim i As Long Dim LR As Long How many procedures have cryptic […]

seen this?

no, i see now! great job

thanks! @RubberDuck has been working hard on source control integration, too. next RD will rock!

good stuff lads

@pnuts needs a new arch-enemy... :(
@It'sbeenapleasure I wish you all the best in your new endeavours, great things are ahead I'm sure.

7:39 PM
@RubberDuck take a look at this one:

Q: How Can I Initalize and object with help of properties of initializing object in VBA

sgp667I have two objects that need to interact with each other one is called Collateral the other is called Model. Model is an abstract Class is implemented by Model_A, Model_B, Model_AB. Each Collateral object has a collection of models as one of its properties. In order to initalize each Model I will...

I like what you're doing. VBA has no constructors, so you're right, you'll need factories; Class_Initialize cannot be parameterized, and runs before any other code in the class - so you can't use it as a constructor. — Mat's Mug 23 secs ago

@Mat'sMug Very nice question.

Woohoo!!
> ' DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE is usually better written as ' HERE BE DRAGONS

LOL
Would this actually be a good use of the since the code is written specifically to be used by beginners?

done

Q: Text files: Copy, Rename, Append/Merge together

PhrancisI wrote 3 subroutines related to batch data processing, they will be used together. A bit of background, I wrote this for my admin colleagues who do not write code. An application dumps daily .ack files onto a shared drive which contain data processing messages (success, errors, etc.). I wrote ...

A: How Can I Initalize and object with help of properties of initializing object in VBA

RubberDuckFirst, lets answer your question. How can you dynamically create instances of different class that all implement the same interface? As was pointed out, VBA doesn't have any constructors, so you're correct. A Factory Pattern is called for here. How I tend to go about this is define a public enu...

not enough actually ;)
I'd have gone all the way to static factory class!

@Mat'sMug I just did...
Not static, but full blown factory class.

:)

8:48 PM
Man. I wish we could award bounties to questions.
I'd like to reward that question more...

9:03 PM
That is a very well put-together question (and answer)

9:30 PM
> It can be easy to make a small error that causes an infinite loop, which can mess up things and crash the VBE. It would be nice if Rubberduck could catch an infinite loop at compile time (or at another time besides run time, whichever is most ideal).
> :+1:

@retailcode, shall we see how far we can push the parser? =;)-

Github has emotes? Weird!

lol
yeah, they're a bit hard to discover though.

:smiley_cat:

@Phrancis You're a genius.

9:43 PM
I have now officially ruined all of our repositories' seriousness. :sweat_smile:

:shit:
That's it. I'm going to MSO and asking for emoji support.

Relax. Just in chat. =)

O. Sure.
The Symbols emoji actually could be pretty handy on github

Hey @PetLahev.

9:50 PM
Hi Guys, how is going with the Git integration, I couldn't wait for that :)

It's coming along. Slow, but sure.
I had to make some changes to the API to get the actual integration to work.

yeah I saw it. I actually monitor all your changes quite close :)
btw. great work

Making sure the changes were backward compatible took some time.
lol. I'm glad someone is paying attention. Thanks.

@PetLahev hey! so you saw the refactor/rename happening? :)

I'm heading home now, but you just made my day @PetLahev. Thanks for stopping by.

9:53 PM
Well, I'm getting about 20 emails per day from RubberDuck project so I may missed some but I did see changes in the API + all the fixes you've applied

@Phrancis that just got bookmarked!

@PetLahev First CR answer of yours, on my first VBA question... Awesome!

20 emails! ouch! we gotta be annoying!

@Mat'sMug nope, actually finally something interesting in my inbox

9:58 PM
@Mat'sMug that's is so cool. I love it in VS so we're going to have it in VBE. I can't believe. I'll test that!
@Phrancis is it you? Really, great I thought I should give something back to the community. Btw. great work I had hard time to find something :)

I'm planning to work out the few kinks remaining tonight, and then I'm merging it into the Next branch :)

@PetLahev Yup! Good review too, I like your ideas a lot

> I read somewhere that ANTLR can evaluate conditions. I need to read up on it.
> If this inspection happens, expect a bunch of other ones too, like ConditionIsConstantInspection ("condition always evaluates to 'true'" or "condition always evaluates to 'false'"), and other things I can't think of at the moment.

Well, TTGH. I feel like I actually accomplished something of much more value than my normal day-to-day stuff. It's going to save a lot of man hours and customer frustration/escalations. Back in a bit from home.

same here

10:03 PM
I got pulled away for work stuff, so I just came back to wish you all a good night
Bye!

later @Blackhawk!

WAIT, MEHOW IS LEAVING SO?

(gotta go now)

kk, have a good night!
@It'sbeenapleasure Thanks for all of the many, many helpful comments and answers over my year and months on SO!

10:20 PM

10:36 PM
@RubberDuck @Mat'sMug Is there anywhere a bigger version of this image?

10:50 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg No.. why?
Actually.. the original .pdn file was on my now-fried desktop's hard drive... it's gone!

@Mat'sMug my brother asked. he liked the image.

I can make another though
But I like the white-letter "branding" better

@Mat'sMug no need.

@SimonAndréForsberg He wants a RD poster? :D

10:53 PM
My brother says that he really liked the image, just FYI :)
oh, I already said it...
@Mat'sMug lol. do you have any RD posters?

lol not yet... when that happens be sure we'll also have mugs!
