[Zomis/Fighting] 5 commits. 3 opened issues.

Holy shit.... x32 installer worked on the first try.
That has never happened before.
Let's hope whatever voodoo I just worked also worked on the x64 version.

> Merge pull request #319 from retailcoder/1.21

theoreticly allowed per user install; needs tested. #310

12:18 AM
Gotta go. Ping me when you get a chance to try the one I sent you.

12:50 AM
> I just tried to do a user install with v1.21 and I don't think it's possible. The default install folder is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Rubberduck\Rubberduck" and obviously this folder requires admin. I manually changed the folder to a local user folder, but the installer still requires elevation to continue. Note the Elevation symbol on the "next" button in the screenshot. !image The...
installer may not be checking if Elevation is required, and is requesting it regardless. Or it may intend to register the classes in HKLM\Classes, which will always require Elevation. For the per-user install to work, two things need to happen: the addin .dll file is installed to a local user folder (i.e. %APPDATA%\Roaming), and the Classes are registered in HKCU\Classes. Ideally, the installer should first let the user select a Per-User or System-Wide install, and then the set the default...
install folder and class registry keys to appropriate locations.

@RubberDuck booting... at last. .....re: above - you didn't try to not require admin rights?

1:16 AM
I did set it to a per user install.
One sec. Shifting gears from study mode. Let me check out this comment.

it's still installing in program files...
cleaned up & ready to install. don't hold your breath...
nope
@RubberDuck the installer needs to enable the uninstall button, too
hi @Andy!

> Okay. I wasn't 100% sure that had worked. I followed the instructions from installshield, but I must have missed something. I'll see if I can't make this happen for 1.3 instead. The bug fixes were a priority. I honestly don't understand why the classes weren't registered under HKCU. Will take a look at my test machine in the morning to see where the CLSIDs were registered.

sigh... I don't get it.

there's a setting to require admin privs or not

Yes and I did that. But I meant the 64 PITA thing.

1:28 AM
oh
yeah

> Classes are registered under HKCR/CLSID. I'm still working on geting a x64 installer to work, I'll try registering them under HKCU/Software/Classes/CLSID and see what I get - that's pretty much the one thing I haven't tried as of yet.. hold on......

I understood up front that an install without admin might not be possible.
I updated that comment btw. I'm wondering if it's because the original install was on the machine. Might have to totally uninstall to get a clean per user install.

I always uninstall - I'll test the "upgrade" install after I get a clean install to work ;)
BTW there's this Record class that gets registered...
it's the only one that isn't prefixed with Rubberduck.
oh wait
it's Rubberduck.SourceControl.FileStatus, getting registered under a Record key
{4DDA743E-E3A7-440A-A030-92DF616B2C7B}

> I'm also going to call out that all installs are "per user" regardless of the installer settings, required rights, or location of the CLSIDs in the reg. the add-in can only be registered for the current user. I understand that doesn't change anything here. Just something to keep in mind.

you're referring to the HKCU/Software/Microsoft/VBA/VBE/6.0 key

1:35 AM
Yes.

that one isn't problematic ;)

Yeah. I know. Just didn't want to lose sight of that. I honestly don't care if there's an admin free install, but for that reason, it really does make sense to have a per user install.

true

And honestly, I don't like this guy's attitude about it. I do this for fun.
If he doesn't like it, fork it and fix it.

^^
I'm not going to go out of my way to make an admin-free installer
but I'd like the x64 to work

1:39 AM
Yeah. I want the x64 to work too. That's important to me.
Because honestly, why don't you have admin rights on your dev machine anyway?
Ugh... I really don
Wait. Maybe... Maybe...
No. Never mind.

lol

@Mat'sMug Hi. How's it going?

> renamed x86 setup project to Rubberduck.Setup32

@Andy could be worse.... but honestly it's been 3 days I'm working on getting a COM add-in to run on a x64 environment.... a total PITA
actually, not even a x64 environment - just a 64-bit MS-Office
32-bit Office works fine on x64

first.)

1:48 AM
@Andy do you code VBA?

I do not.

So, you're a moderator on moderators community building?
It's an interesting SE.

I didn't mean to barge in. I was asked to point Zephyr at this room to watch for close vote requests. I was just trying to figure out why. It doesn't look like you guys have any of those :)
I am a moderator of moderators. Or, I was until the name changed and that joke no longer works

Lol. Yeah.

well we do have a feed of VBA/VB6 questions on Stack Overflow and Super User in this room

1:51 AM
Hey @Andy I won't lie to you. We keep an eye on the VBA tags via that ticker in the corner. If we see crud we tend to VTC it.

(and of course on Code Review as well)
hi @cheezsteak!

ok it can't be pandocs fault. there is some weird infinite loop going on.

@RubberDuck Good. No sense keeping crud around.

It's just been one of those weeks...

pandoc should be catching but isn't. because I can concat 3 files just fine all are a problem. ergo there is some combo
that is causing issues.
two more things:

1:54 AM
Oh. @Chrismas007 made the request?

haven't had a chance to look at the .docx you sent me yet

1. If I write some build scripts what language would you like it to be in? Optionas are any cross platform scripting language: Python, ruby, scala, lua etc.

@Andy what's Zephyr? Mug & I are the room owners. I kind of wish Christmas would have mentioned it.

2. I have had a few beers so bear with me

I can Ruby. Mug, preferences?
Weirdest sentence I've ever typed ^

1:56 AM
lol

I can't ruby but can scala and python. I am not opposed to learning ruby though
honestly its between mug and duck.

I don't any of the above, so I'd go with Ruby ...just because Python is Python

@RubberDuck Zephyr watches a few rooms around the network for cv-pls type messages and posts them in a single room. It shares the room with another bot used for detecting low quality stuff around the network. (I don't control that one)

@cheezsteak your call. I can learn some Python if I've gotta.
I just appreciate the help.
... Idk. I don't mind tossing close votes at crap, but... I don't think I want that in this room.
I don't want the negative energy of a bunch of all over.

Fair enough. You guys haven't used the syntax it looks for at all (unless the search function is lying to me), so it makes sense to not have it in here

2:01 AM
@RubberDuck python or ruby are the obvious top choices
due to popularity

ok I need help understanding how the hell this is possible:

Thanks @Andy. I'll talk to Christmas when I see him.

Sounds good.
Have a good <time of day> all. :)

You too!

@Andy lol that's a solved problem on CR - we say "monking!"
it's always monking time on CR

2:03 AM
Wtf @Mat. How'd you get two different builds there?
Looks like they're both today...

it's a debug build
looks like it's not registered where I think it is

I'm about ready to say to heck with it and just get back to what I'm good at, writing bad code.

scanning entire registry for 1.21.5552.38937

Ya know what sounds like ? Integrated Source Control.

:))))
go ahead
I'll wreck my brains on the x64 installer one more night
BTW, do you have TeamViewer10?

2:08 AM
room topic changed to VBA: Discussions about anything VBA (and/or VB6) [fun] [pushing-it] [rubberduck-programming] [vb6] [vba]

did you just add a tag to this room's topic?

TeamViewer? What's that?

lol

Yes. Yes I did. Because I'm tired of this not being fun anymore.

yesterday, by Mat's Mug
Perhaps we could set up a TeamViewer this afternoon?

2:09 AM
We're going to have fun if it kills us.

good!

Oh! Lol. I thought that was a generic term for web meeting...

search completed. nothing found.

Manually input keys into installer?
Or imported them?
Build order foobarred?

it's a debug build... I did nothing!
searching for 8D052AD8-BBD2-4C59-8DEC-F697CA1F8A66 instead

found the one under HKCR
PINNED!!!
oh found it
ok I'm letting you guess where it is
come on
try
ok

Apparently I'm causing problems

Wait... Which one is that? The one that's running?
No @Chrismas007. No problems.
I just wish you would have run that by us first. That's all.

actually... I'm running .38937........ which isn't there
WTF??

SCRUB ALL THE THINGS
No. That takes forever. I'm clueless.

2:16 AM
I posted that crappy conversion question over in SO's VTC group and they made a big deal about using that VTC tag for the bot to find
Wasn't trying to clog this chat

Oh. Okay. I don't really know what's going on then. Yeah. They're a little picky about that room.

ok I'm losing it. I'm running a build that's not registered anywhere..

Sorry for any confusion man. Feel free to drop any Qs that deserve attention in here. (good or bad)

and it's running

frakkin enter-accident ruined it

I'm one bad decision away from installing VS on my wife's laptop...

lol
@RubberDuck could it be that... I need to register the classes under wow6432?

> I'll look farther into it, but an admin-less install may not be possible with all the COM registration that happens. Please feel free to fork and attempt a fix if we don't get to it in a timely manner.

2:23 AM
I just deleted the wow6432 node for Rubberduck.Extension, started Excel... and it still works.

> @retailcoder just fyi... HKCR is not the true location where classes are registered. It mirrors the contents of other locations: The content of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT comes from two sources: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes. If a subkey or entry appears in either location, then it also appears in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. If the values of entries in the two Classes subkeys conflict, then only the value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes appears in...

interesting
well that explains it

> @christophocles same for HKCR/wow6432node I'm guessing?
> @retailcoder I believe so, yes.

@ckuhn203 I appreciate you guys spending the time on this, I know it is not a high priority versus other tasks.

When I have time this week, I do plan to hack together a registry key to install this addin on my work PC, same as what I did for MZ-Tools v3. After I have it running I will show you what I did.
> Thanks @christophocles. I imagine it involves exporting the keys and creating a .reg file manually? I may be able to assist in that endeavor tomorrow if I have a few extra minutes.

I'm out Mug. Hoping I can sit down and knock out a chunk of code tomorrow.

cool
'night!

2:36 AM
> I might have found what I missed. Will follow up. helpnet.installshield.com/installshield16helplib/…
> I've just experimented a bit - it seems the only keys that matter are under HKLM (excluding the add-in key itself, registered under HKCU/Software/Microsoft/VBA/VBE/6.0/Addins64). I successively removed them from everywhere I saw them and launched Excel only to see Rubberduck still alive - it only died when the HKLM keys were removed. I'm giving up on this one.
> I can confirm that in v1.21, all of the CLSIDs are registered in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID. This was not the case in v1.2.

The only registry keys in HKLM are the ones related to the installer/uninstaller.

3:01 AM
> Ok I think I scrubbed my whole registry clean - backing up, I'll give it another shot.

The Wow6432Node keys are only for 32-bit software running on x64 right? You seem to know your registry stuff, do you think this would be a working setup for a x64 build?

![image](https://cloud.githubusercontent.com/assets/5751684/6680629/6ebf5666-cc30-11e4-8fa6-12eac1910f28.png)

3:18 AM
> @retailcoder correct. Wow6432node is used for 32-bit applications on x64 OS. So the 32-bit addin has its CLSIDs under Wow6432node, but the 64-bit addin would not. The part that actually makes the VB editor load the addin is this key (for 32-bit): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VBA\VBE\6.0\Addins\Rubberduck.Extension For 64-bit, it appears to be: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VBA\VBE\6.0\Addins64\Rubberduck.Extension So yes, I think your setup looks correct. But I don't have a...
copy of 64-bit office to test it. This seems to confirm what I just said: mztools.com/articles/2012/MZ2012018.aspx

3:37 AM
ugh. 2nd time regasm.exe gets messed up
reinstalling .net 4.5.1

4:17 AM
ok I think I'm making some progress. The x64 installer isn't registering all the keys.
turning "require admin privs" on ..and starting over.
switching to per-machine install
and removing manual registry keys from installer (except add-in key)
building
ugh

4:37 AM
it's registering under HKCR all by itself... replacing HKCR with HKCU in the generated .reg file, re-importing into installer, rebuilding installer.
it's... nagging me
it created the keys where I wanted them, mirorred to HKCR as expected
oh fuck
I created the keys under HKCU\Classes... should have been HKCU\Software\Classes...
uninstalling
rebuilding
damn thing isn't registering the goddamn keys I'm telling it to register.
and if I import the keys manually into the registry, add-in still can't be found.
this is nuts
NUTS
trying HKLM for the heck of it
FML

5:01 AM
> non-working x64 installer

5:14 AM
oh wait
wrong build version was registered... trying one last thing
and if that doesn't work then I can still upload the x64 installer with a post-install step (regasm.exe) to get it to work
looking good
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!

> x64 work!

3 hours later…
9:12 AM
Well done! Well done.
So you ended up adding the keys by hand then?
I'm gonna edit the release in a little bit so we have one unified 1.21 release.

Fixed the bugs we did. Better we made it. =;)- v1.21 is here! (yes, including for 64-bit Office!).Filed under: Programming, Rubberduck, VBA

Yup. Still want that.
So, some interesting info. The x86 installer puts keys in both Wow6432 and Root.
Still trying to figure out if it's HKLM or HKCU
Installed under HKLM on my test machine.

We got it to work. Let's make next release cleaner (likely 1.22 or something)

Well, we're set up for it now.
I need to pull master into next and remove 1.21.

Yup

11:55 AM
Bug fixes go into a branch that get merged into both branches.
Bam. We can work on 1.3 and release patches.
We're getting good at this Mug.

12:16 PM
We'll need to change ClockAhead for kjname (and keep the url) - saw the tweet? lol

Yeah..... I saw that.
Oops.

btw I have 5 Careers 2.0 invites to give people.

Ohh. Why didn't I think of that? I need to troll that site for jobs too.

Do you already have an account @RubberDuck?

Yeah.

1:45 PM
I don't ;)

> The one missing functionality is "Delete" - I left it out because I want to implement a "Safe delete" instead (hopefully for 1.3), so that one can't just delete a module/class/form that's actually used somewhere.

Thanks again for the feedback!

2:25 PM
@Mat'sMug You don't have a Careers2.0 account?
Oh shit @ticker a C++ & VBA question
+1 for that guy

A: Accessing a nested structure in C++ from VBA

RubberDuckYou can't pass VBA Types as arguments. (I know. I know. VBA....) What you'll need to do is pass in/out the individual properties. Something like this (I don't know C++ so bear with me.) void Function1(Output* Field1, Output* Field2, Output* Field3)

Let's see if I got that right.....

3:08 PM
Okay, but I'm telling you that you can't pass a VBA Type like that. That's why you're getting the "Mismatch" error. — RubberDuck 5 mins ago

@cheezsteak Nope.. I'm a business analyst now ;)

3:29 PM
@Mat'sMug would you like one?

3:48 PM
If you don't know who to send it to, I can take one, sure :)

I have 5 to give. I need an email for you. Should I just use rubberduck-vba?

@cheezsteak @Mat'sMug anyone want to review a Tree class when I finish it? sigh

@cheezsteak retailcoder at gmail ;)
@RubberDuck sure! ...eventually!

@RubberDuck will do

I hate it when I look at my code and I could either make a fix in 10 minutes, or refactor and make it right. I just can't say no to making it right.

3:55 PM
@Mat'sMug it says that email has already been sent an invitation.

oh right I had one over a year ago, didn't do anything with it, thought it had expired...
it's tied to the SE account??
meh, nevermind then
lol I don't need an invite

@Mat'sMug do you think it makes sense to make an [Office13] label?

for 2013?
isn't that Office15?

@cheezsteak... is that? Is that?... That is!

yes and it works from a separate project.

@Duga that is seriously annoying
looks like 2013 is the pain point

I think so.

I'd like to know why

@cheezsteak Yeah... it does, but doesn't. Have a good one.

> It might be @danwagnerco. It could at least help us figure out if it's an issue with 2013 or x64. Both are a bit suspect at the moment, but the x64 installer was tested on 2010 I believe.

geez... when did I actually start to know what I'm talking about?
Short story is probably, yes. An abstract base class looks called for at a glance. — RubberDuck 30 secs ago

> x64 installer confirmed to work on 64-bit Office 2010.

Did you uninstall the previous 1.2 version?

Try running `c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework64\v4.0.30319\regasm.exe (install-folder)\rubberduck.dll /codebase /tlb` - just to be sure ;)

4:41 PM
when did we get a new CSS?

@Duga ah, an interesting one!
what's "stby" for?

> When right clicking on an item in the Code Explorer, it would be great to have a "Rename" option. Not only does this move us toward removing the need to ever open the built in Project Explorer, but it also would mean there's almost never a need to open up the Properties view.

@Duga And I never caught it because I hate that syntax... damn.
