3:00 PM
that happens to me a lot too lol
I think I'm going to change my name sometime

You do so in 'Edit profile and settings'

I found a better solution to my problem
Pentatonix mix on youtube
no need for so many tabs

new hat
It will
Appear
Soon

Never

Jim
For the CCCC is there something where "turned" and "urn" (synonym for jar) can be something?

3:03 PM
@BeastlyGerbil For what?

Search you must

Oh yeah

@Jim URN!!!! muahahaha

Woo
it
loaded
Look <-

So you meant "appear soon it will"

3:04 PM
No <-

@Jim I don't think so

Jim
Ok, just was the first thing that popped into my head so I typed it

@Jim In general, it indicates a reversal

Jim
Under my rule I'd say anything when solving
I figured but I like to explore coincidences

3:06 PM
And you're right to do so

hmm
well
to wait
for lag
now

Why are we typing super short sentence fragments instead of whole sentences?

So the profile pic gets bigger, probably.

Well
I'm waiting for the lag to catch up
lol

It's kind of annoying honestly
What lag?

3:08 PM
lol

Still better than having removed everywhere :-)

True, it's still legible at least

lol

@GentlePurpleRain- I screwed it up. :(

TrojanByAccident?

3:09 PM
lol

@Techidiot GPR has it and the enumeration is (7)?

He wants to hide the fact that he's the bot of Sid.

Yes, I made it for Gujrat and missed an "a" Too bad
@GentlePurpleRain Go for the new CCCC

Ah, damn

@IAmInPLS ToBeAnnounced? :P

3:10 PM
Sorry, apologies!

@dcfyj Saiid's new name

KangarooByAccident

:34286814 Saiid, we had enough of that mess with ak, we don't need you to start that up...

Start what up?

(removed)
The best part is, I could delete that message and it would break nothing!

3:12 PM
¿(removed)?
Also, @Saiid doesn't mention me anymore

Jim
@BeastlyGerbil finally at the office. Get to look at your puzzle now.

At work? Time to solve puzzles instead of working :P

^^

@Jim I had a look at your but the hex codes didn't decode to anything as far as I could tell. I tried hexadecimal and ASCII.

Jim
@BeastlyGerbil Good, it's working.

3:17 PM
Well I'm off now. @Jim I hope you have good luck solving my puzzle

@BeastlyGerbil Cya

Jim
@BeastlyGerbil I'm on it now. Will report back. No CCCC to distract me (nor any real work to speak of today)

@Jim Lucky. I've got 20 assignments due by midnight

twenty?

@Saiid Have you been procrastinating? :P

3:23 PM
At this point, this is not procrastination anymore

"no"

This is dedication to not doing assignments !

@IAmInPLS Sure it is, He has stuff due and hasn't been doing it.

Jim
@Saiid Luckily I've put myself in a really good position :)

@Saiid "no"?
Why the quotes?

Sid
3:26 PM
Guten abend people...

*Abend :)

@Sid I see this and think Gluten lol

Sid
@Displayname The capital letter is important?

@dcfyj I 'haven\'t' been procrastinating

@Sid Yes, all nouns have to be capitalized. (no matter where they are in a sentence)

3:31 PM
A car goes around abend

@Sid Yes, German is weird like that.

Past participles and auxiliary verbs are the most annoying though

@BeastlyGerbil I thought you said you left...?

I'm about to, sneaking on for a quick few minutes ;)

He did

3:34 PM
Ah

Sid
@BeastlyGerbil Is that an "U" in the link in your puzzle?

?
In the link to my puzzle... Where?

Sid
Tom this risk.... The things written above it..

In the picture above?

Sid
Nvm... It's L and J. Got it...

3:37 PM

I just posted a dumb riddle
race to solve it!

Sid
Literally speaking, your riddle actually has "we".

...yes it does

I think the answer is literally 'one' but not sure

Was thinking about the letters o,n,e as well

3:40 PM

Q: One for All, and All for One

SconibulusWe three are one For ear or tongue Yet not for eye nor hand Of our good three But one lacks three As this riddle lacks we

Hey, you're faster and faster @Sphinx

I wish there was a way to lock a message in a box to prove I thought of it immediately but not actually say it until later :)

There is

@Sconibulus what do you mean?

I mean I have something incredibly punny to say but it's also a huge hint, so I can't say it :)

3:42 PM
There is
Encrypt it, post the ciphercode, then release the decrypter later

^
better yet, encrypt it with the answer, so when you've solved it you will know its right and get the pun as an award

eh, sure
pazeucnnsawzynwzdh

lol
now to break that cipher

please don't try to work backwards from that :)

unless it's just pure encryption
in which case I won't even try
I want to make a puzzle that makes you download a file that's actually malicious and destroys your computer, but I can't think of a way not to get caught

3:48 PM
@TrojanByAccident Great idea.
@Sconibulus I hope it's not a One-Time-Pad, because than you could just fabricate something later.

@BeastlyGerbil Everyone thinks it has something to do with Prince, but I was just looking for a random assortment of words to use that wouldn't conflict with other usernames. Kind of like "correct horse battery staple".

nah, I encoded it with an answer to the puzzle
vigenere style

Which puzzle are we even talking about?

CCCC: Infirm lions running back and forth (6, 7) (a1z26 sum for confirmation: 134)

That one->
Infirm = soft, runninG back? and 4th?
or maybe it's running back anD fortH

3:51 PM
@TrojanByAccident That doesn't sound like a solution...

@GentlePurpleRain Is that a hint?

Nice riddle @Sconibulus :-)

No. I just meant you didn't provide a phrase for the solution.

Oh, I know
I'm 99% sure that infirm will be the def

@Sconibulus "well you're half right"

3:53 PM
@Sconibulus Another hint?

twotwotwotwotwotwo, for everyone lazy

well = pit, you are(UR) half riGHT
scon's word is URGHT

@Displayname wot wot wot?
Ok, my turn to post a puzzle

@Displayname or, you know, just 'two'

Sid
Why is it that when I post a puzzle I like, I get far less upvotes than the one which I don't like?

3:56 PM
Because

I said so

man, you guys and your cryptic clues. I had no idea they existed till I started hanging around here. I read the wikipedia page on them, and I find them fascinating, but utterly confusing nonetheless

@Matt Excuse me, you forgot to give a word length for your clue

how do you know where to separate the definition from the wordplay?

3:58 PM
I hadn't really heard of them either until the CCCC started

> There may be a word or phrase such as "or", "is", "and", "to be" indicating where the split is between definition and wordplay, but there often is not. The solver must figure out the location on their own.

you usually don't until it's solved, unless something looks very definitionish

Oh. well then
with the latest clue, infirm clues anagram to me

@Matt Interesting.

@Matt (and @Jim if you're interested), you might want to look at Deusovi's excellent Cryptic Clue Guide.

4:01 PM
but (6, 7) really discourages that

Jim
@GentlePurpleRain I've read it a couple times, but coming to know it is a process

I hear you.

Q: Two brothers, two watches

IAmInPLSTwo brothers, Jack and Joe, were born in May. One was born in 1932, and the other, a year later. Each brother owned a watch, which was previously possessed by their father. Considering their age, the watches worked pretty well. Nonetheless, one watch gained ten seconds per hour, while the other...

It took me a long time to get the hang of these clues.

Jim
Yup, which is why I'm here...to learn

4:02 PM
I think the only way to get good at them is lots of practice.

Jim
If it's not uncomfortable, I probably don't like it

forth could probably be 'fourth' in wordplay, but could it be in definition?

Hmm
No, I don't think so

Sid
Why can't lions be the def? Lions could easily mean "animals"..
Maybe not..

I got a cryptic crossword app, but in my first puzzle, I was only able to solve three clues

4:05 PM
@Sid It's not at the end

I want to take 'lions running back' to be one thing for some reason
but I don't know enough about football

Theo Riddick

Jim
Theo Riddick is the Lions
yeah
which I liked because of "The o"

don't teams have like ten of them?

not more than a few

Jim
4:08 PM
kinda sorta but not really

it would be uncommon for more than 3 different running backs to play

in a game or a season?

there are other positions that might see handoffs, fullback, even quarterback
still, it's usually clear who the starting running back is

Jim
@Matt agreed

"the o" doesn't help because (6, 7)

Jim
4:10 PM
agreed

unless ... theory, which can be infirm is 6
but I fear I am stretching too far

Jim
I'm awful at these, so I'll be on my way :)

I'm no better

@Matt Generally, infirm things can be stretched :)

also generally, the word "theory" is followed by the word "of", so again, I think I'm off the mark

Jim
4:14 PM
runningback can be RB, but i don't know how that'll help either

Hey, I've got a question. Who would be interested in having a separate room specifically for Cryptic Clues and such?
I'm going to assume that means 'sure, I'd use it'

For me it means the opposite.

lol
well for anyone that wants

what was it, three rep-caps for a hat?
I'm about 30 away from #1 if so

three rep caps in 15 days on 3 different sites iirc
unless 3 consecutive rep caps on one site is a thing

4:23 PM
nah
it's just 3 rep caps total

oh, it takes three sites? probably won't happen

what site doesn't matter

well, then I stand corrected
@Sconibulus how about a hint on your music box?

@TrojanByAccident Are you suggesting this because you don't like the cryptic clues clogging up the Sphinx's Lair? Or just because you want a place to be able to discuss them in more depth?

4:26 PM
I added a little something this morning

However, it does get rather confusing when we have some people spouting off stuff for the CCCC, and others on a completely different track, discussing a new puzzle

It might be a good idea to move the cryptic clues to a separate room. They do occupy a lot of the discussion here. It doesn't bother me, because I enjoy them, but others might not appreciate it.
@TrojanByAccident Why don't you suggest it on Puzzling Meta, and see how much support it has.

I don't mind it here. I enjoy seeing the solutions go by

@GentlePurpleRain Eheh.. about that...

@Matt, but you could easily see them in another room, too?

4:29 PM
I could

Jim
CCCCs feel like a way to keep conversation going in here at times when there's not
But I also love chaos

I personally don't often feel confused about that, I think the CCCCs have noticably increased the amount of activity in this room though, and I don't think that's a bad thing

but I am less likely to pay attention in 2 rooms contemporaneously

Jim
@Matt ditoo

^^

4:30 PM
hundreds of buttons
"the better part of a thousand"
leads me to 512
specifically 8 bits

the more helpful change was probably in the message
512 is 9 bits, isn't it?

Chat on mobile is a royal pain. I hop on chat when i'm not home from time to time, but I won't do more than one room at a time. I'd quite prefer keeping the CCCC here, personally.

omg
yes it is

@TrojanByAccident What about that...?

The app keeps teasing me too - there's a new chat thingie built into it now, but it won't let me use it; thinks I'm not logged in. so I end up pushed back to the web version. So annoying.

4:33 PM
what's more interesting is that there are 8 different notes used in the treble line, and 9 in the bass line

@GentlePurpleRain You see....

@Rubio When did that happen? I would love integrated chat in the app.
@TrojanByAccident No, I don't...

It's happened twice, actually
and then it goes away

@GentlePurpleRain I see....

But it started happening maybe a week ago
There's a setting in preferences somewhere for it, even

4:35 PM
Do you mean the mobile chat website? There's no chat built into the app.

Eh. Yeah it might be an update mobile chat version rather than in the app
I honestly didn't pay it much attention as it never worked right
[✓] Use new mobile UI if your device supports it in Chat prefs
And oh - I see now... it actually says there that "Currently, this only applies to the live chat view and the rooms list. " That explains a lot.
When it says "view" it seems to mean it, cuz you can't actually interact in it.

Nice
Congrats @Rubio

Based on the score of 11 here.

Huh. Nice, thanks! :)
Oooh. I'm all italicized and stuff.

Don't let it go to your head... :)

@GentlePurpleRain There's 21 for Gareth, though?

5:04 PM
NOW MY REIGN OF TERROR SHALL BEGIN. GROVEL BEFORE ME, LESSER CREATURES, OR FEEL MY WRA... er. sorry, what was I saying?
6
@TrojanByAccident Gareth has already been exalted

@TrojanByAccident Yes, but he was made an owner a while ago. He wasn't at 21 then.

Oh
Forgive my ignorance, mighty rulers

He was somewheres around 15 if I recall aright

Hard to say. He shot up pretty quickly...

Now I have one more person I can blame for all my issues in chat. Great.

Sid
5:06 PM
Master Rubio, What dost thou command of me? :P

I think I upvoted him to 16 between Emrakul asking if he wanted to do it (and me quoting his prior response that he'd do so if asked) and someone actually making it so, which was about 5 minutes, so
I'm pretty sure he was at 15 ;)

@Sid I'm pretty sure that should be "What dost thou command of me?"

Sid
There you go

I'm pretty sure it should be "What is thy bidding, my master"

durnit ninjaed

5:07 PM
"It's a disaster, skywalker we're after"

oooh! I love that @Sconibulus
Annnnd now I have to go play it. Thanks. :)

"but if he could be turned to the Dark Side"
"yes, he'd be a powerful ally, another Dark Jedi"
"He will join us or die!"

Luke, use the Force, and run! Run to Dagobah! Run to Dagobah!

<spoiler alert>! :P

@Sconibulus So here's the real question: Original, or Special Edition?

Sid
5:09 PM
Star wars?
Not my forte...

I don't think I've seen it in five years or so, so I'm going to go with Original?

I don't have headphones and am at work :<3(
(sad man with giant nose)
((hence the sadness))

lol. Well, you know how it goes; mute it and watch the new animations. (that's the diff between original and S.E.)

hey, I saw that corvette a couple days ago

5:12 PM
I can't decide what my favourite quote from Star Wars is. Either "I don't like sand [...]" or "I've seen a security hologram of him... killing younglings (not Anakin)". I think I haven't managed to watch either of those scenes without laughing.

I don't know what you're talking about. Those lines were in a Star Wars movie? (*cough*)

Sid
And I am watching "The scent of a woman" from 1992. Al Pacino is the man!

I actually learned to appreciate the prequels as fantastic comedy movies.

I really wanna see Topher Grace's 85min cut of all three prequels.

@Displayname My favourite quote from Star Wars is "Are you kidding me? I'm blind!"

5:22 PM
I'm a little partial to "Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?"

Apology accepted

@Rubio I've seen it, it's quite good

Q: Since when has Darth Vader had a sense of humor?

TimpanusIn Rogue One, after Darth Vader makes the comment This comment displays a sense of humor that seems entirely out of character for him. Is it ever explained in-universe?

jar jar has 2 lines

5:26 PM
Heh. I read that thread when it was on HNQ

*“We were promised a reward,” she gasped. “A h-h-handsome reward!“*

*"I am your reward,” the Sith Lord said. “You don’t find me handsome?”*

Or on "Related", I forget
I enjoyed it
@Matt How did you see it?

it was on youtube or vimeo or something

I've only watched ANH, none other SW movies. Didn't like A New Hope

but it's so good... and Empire and Jedi are even better

5:28 PM
@Rubio Same

what didn't you like about it? If I might ask

For those who have watched them both, which do you prefer, TFA or R1?

The trailer is, but I have looked for the full cut and it seems to have never been released.

I enjoyed Rogue One more

Rogue One had a better plot, but far worse characters

5:30 PM
I'm more excited to see the continuation of the saga, but there were so many moments in RO that just made me happy to see

@TrojanByAccident Someone asked me that on the way out of the theater. My answer to you is my answer to them: they're totally different, I don't know that either was better than the other. I think I enjoyed Rogue One more, but that's probably largely because it stands alone instead of being part 1 of an arc

Rogue One felt like it began life as the best Star Wars video game ever, and got turned into a movie

It just felt... Unrealistic.

@Sconibulus Yeah they completely forsook character development to get everything in there plotwise they wanted to

Especially with the Wookie copilot.

5:32 PM
Unrelated, isn't earning Nice Question, asked via Mobile, supposed to be a hat?

yes

Sid
@Jim Does your Newton puzzle require colors to be converted to hex?

How do you fly a spacecraft if your copilot doesn't even speak a recognizable language? He sounded like he was just yawning really loudly all the time.

I wonder why it didn't happen then

I personally enjoyed Rogue One tons more

5:33 PM
maybe it's just slow

What question?

10
Q: One for All, and All for One

SconibulusWe three are one For ear or tongue Yet not for eye nor hand Of our good three But one lacks three As this riddle lacks we

When did it reach 10?

@Mithrandir Everyone needs to speak the same language?
I dunno, long enough for the badge to register

@Sconibulus No, but all of Chewies lined were just... yawns.

5:34 PM
Han was able to speak both, and Chewbacca clearly understood 'Common' or whatever

On the Winterbash website it says you have the hat

I assumed it was a vocal cord thing

Do I get a hat if I singlehandedly sing the entire Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat musical? :P

ahh, now it's showing, I guess it was just slow, I sort of figured it'd show up on the same pass as the badge was awarded

it's possible
you might get a lot of strange looks, depending on the context

5:36 PM
Who, me? :P

yes

like I said, it depends on the context :)

Don't you love when people decide to write half a sentence in one language and the other half in another?

@Mithrandir For those of us who aren't Jewish/don't understand Hebrew, what time of year is it? (not sure what parashat-vayeishev means...)

5:41 PM
That's when we read the parsha called veyeshev, that's where the josep s ry is

@TrojanByAccident things get weird when the other language is written the other direction

So, for laypeople, it's essentially the time of year when the story of Joseph is read/remembered?

Yep
So I know basically the whole musical by heart

@Matt Oh jeez

Now I know why you're #6 in Winterbash :P

5:50 PM
Not sure whether this is spam: lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/6322/…

I think it answers the question, albeit not the best of answers.
Although, it's also a super old question

@Mithrandir Looks like blatant self-promotion to me.

I have a question - Is documentation in other languages allowed on SO?

@GentlePurpleRain Well, a promotion of some sort anyhow

So spamflag it?

5:53 PM
@TrojanByAccident How do you mean?

I was going to ask that too.
@Mithrandir I did.

Well, I found a documentation that popped up that was in all Japanese

Was it on the Japanese stack or actual SO?

Actual SO

Link?

5:57 PM
Wasn't sure whether to accept or reject

Because chat likes cutting off names, I keep reading yours as "TrojanByAcid"...

lol
Actually, translated by google, it's just a bunch of text repeated anyway
lol
spam then
