I thought octopus and spider.
But octopi have tentacles.
@Alconja "Grit" -> Corn?
Or is that taking it a little too far off?
The other definition that comes up is "Determination".

No comment. :)

It's possible. Remember though, we're eventually looking for a 9-letter word, and the definition's going to have to be at the beginning or end

is "by means of" an indicator I'm unfamiliar with?

Not one I'm aware of. It could very well be a split marker.
(where "infamous guts" is the def and "grit and character" is the wordplay)

i suspect guts is an indicator, and character the def, personally
but that makes for some tricky open-ended wordplay

12:14 AM
Hm, "guts" could be something to do with internal letters

yah

either looking only at them, or taking them out ("gutting")

_(...)_ + (via?!) + [grit] = [character]

Well, if we go that route, the word could be "*hitler*" or something.

Oh, like "character" as in "person" rather than "moral quality"

12:16 AM
oh. man. that makes it really open ended :)

Q: The tags on this puzzle are correct

stacksfiller What should I call this kind of puzzle?

12:58 AM
@stacksfiller Nice clue! I wrote a similar one based on the same wordplay that I never used because it's orientation specific:
Mistake made by knocked up students (2, 4)

1 hour later…
2:03 AM
AMPERSAND
(infAMous; PER SAND; an ampersand is a character)
oh, sorry, should have said @Alconja

Nice work, that's it. (though it's not just a character, it's "and character" (def))

ah, of course
that's a nice touch

2:21 AM
What is the grits?

Oh.
Ah, I see it now.

Ah, nice one!

CCCC: Legal matter and billiards together save from danger (6).

strictly, the next CCCC is meant to be set by whoever solved the previous one...

2:32 AM
Oh, sorry.
Should I delete mine?

it's OK! I'm still trying to come up with a good one. At the moment yours is lacking an enumeration (the bit that says how many letters)...
anyway, tell you what,m yours is RESCUE
so it's still my turn :-)

Yup.
I thought it would be easy.

(not very convinced by "billiards" indicating CUE, by the way)

I see that now; "cue" is the the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word "billiards" because books always mention someone doing something while sighting the cue or marking the cue.

cryptics tend to have to be pretty precise, exactly because they're difficult.
just a little bit of sloppiness can make a clue unfairly tough

2:36 AM
Yeah.
That was my first one. I'll try to do better next time, and figure one out so I can try again.
Irreparable
(Probably wrong.)

Nope, not that.

3:34 AM
(I realise that there is something a little unsatisfactory about my latest CCCC. I can see a few ways to remedy it, but I think applying any of them might give more away than I want to. There is another slightly naughty thing but it was deliberate. None of the above is likely to be very helpful unless you are close to solving it.)
Actually, I will make a small change. I don't think it gives too much away.
I'll post the revised version and then delete the old one. Oh, wait, I can't. Perhaps a moderator can either delete or amend it for me. Revised version coming up:

I'll delete for you.

CCCC: Final condition of Dorian Gray's picture: damaged, indeed destroyed (11)

If I got it right, then you're a sockpuppet of a currently banned user. Sorry, I'm going to flag you right now. Apologies if you aren't who I'm thinking you are.
what do you mean?

@Ankoganit That's not appropriate. Raise a mod flag instead - spam/offensive flags are seen by every moderator and user with at least 10k network rep. Us 10ks can't do anything about it, and it's neither spam nor offensive.

@Mego Ooops, sorry, can I reverse the flag?

@Ankoganit It's already been marked as invalid. Please be more careful with your flags next time. :)

Q: The adventitious 18-gon

GamowToday I have drawn a regular $18$-gon on a piece of paper. My drawing shows the $18$ vertices of the polygon labeled as $P_1,P_2,\ldots,P_{18}$ in clockwise order, and it also shows all $135$ diagonals. Now looking at my drawing, it seems to me that the three diagonals $P_1P_{10}$ and $P_2P_{14}...

Um, I don't seem to be able to find a puzzle that I am searching for in the main site. Was it deleted due to some reason? It was something about a magician and some mathematics in it.

I was wondering about that one
Taken at face value, the problem was obviously impossible, so there had to be some sort of trick

I wonder what the persons intended answer was...

Sid
@Ankoganit because? I was actually interested to know what the OP had in mind

The OP themselves got deleted.

Sid
6:49 AM
Was it "Him" again?

Uhhhhhh
What?

(I may be completely wrong, but I suspect the OP had no answer in mind in the first place. That was just an upvote-bait to get enough rep to chat. Of course, that's just my surmise.)
@Sid yep

Sid
Yeah, that thing was impossible. The magician had to be really lucky. Something, Like one in 100,000 probability-like thing.
@stacksfiller It's an old trouble, popping up,every now and then, to annoy users.
And, I believe, I must applaud that guy's perseverance.

I'm not sure applaud is the word I'd insert there. hehe

@stacksfiller Reoccurring problem user.

7:21 AM
Is this just me or has there been an update ad there is a blue line box surrounding 'Stack Exchange' in the top left corner

Hm? Where?

Oh no, reloading makes it go

You made me pause a Kurzgesagt video :(

sorry! :P

Hullo!
Also, Kurzgesagt is great

@Deusovi If it wan't for the word reoccurring I would have thought that was from Up Goer Five or Thing Explainer

8:12 AM
I don't think that puzzle is obviously impossible

The current CCCC reads really well as a sentence

Oh wait, the condition was the audience member could remove the card, right
Okay that's obviously dodgy.

Hi @Alconja!

Hey

Have you seen our latest problem?

...probably not

user33948, a reincarnation of a random marsupial

Ah that... Yes. I mod flagged back when they first posted here. But the less said the better. Let's move on.

9:35 AM
I notice you haven't flipped a triangle yet on your avatar - are you still planning to do it?

Not while people are thinking I might. :)
Better trick: tell people I might, then don't while they're waiting (less effort too)
2

And how are your wrap-up posts coming along?

:) you guys aren't going to let me get away with not doing them are you?

Hmm got the CCCC but I feel like I cheated a bit

What?

9:48 AM
Parsed it, chucked it in an anagram solver to check, turned out to be a word I didn't know and would never have gotten

using anagram solvers etc, isn't totally cheating. I think looking up word lists etc are fair game
You still have to parse things and narrow choices and often it doesn't help anyway

@Sp3000 Thanks. Glad you like them. :)

10:51 AM
Hello hello, time consuming puzzle idea.
Time to draw 32 images...

@stacksfiller Glad you like the surface reading. It's a thing I care about a lot in cryptic clues.
@Sp3000 I don't think you need feel bad about it. If you want to wait and see whether someone else gets it unaided, feel free; if you want to post the answer, feel free. Of course I can't guarantee you got it right, not knowing yet what answer you believe you found :-).

Q: Gear cube solving algorithm

latsCan someone please let me know how to i match the colours in the very first stage of solving Gear Cube as I am having difficulty in the first stage itself. I need simple and easy algorithms.

Oh... indeed. I see, I see. (and I too meant to compliment the surface read earlier, very nice).
(though, doesn't that make the 's on Gray extraneous? Or is that allowed?)

It's read as "is" and is used to say (definition) is (wordplay) a lot

Ah, of course. It's on the split. My bad.

ah, that's nice
I had the 'in' 'deed' reading but didn't think to put picture* inside it

Well, since we have so many people here.... who's up for a speedrun CCCC? :P

Q: Put me before new

Soha Farhin PinePut me before new I make it too new! Literally, burning wood. I identify! Every company has me. Mark me, but how? I am one! Now, what am I? Worry not—I will help you; I am a word that defines all of me. I am also a weapon, but that is a rather obsolete me.

In case there should be any doubt: yes, Sp3000, that's the correct answer and correct explanation. Well done!

I figured it was correct based on your comments prior to posting the revised one and jumped the gun :P
But yeah, new word of the day for me :)

Glad to be of service :-).

11:24 AM
EXTENSION?

Yeah :) wanna explain how?

ooh

sixoneten* and phone numbers can have 4 digit extensions?
It's sort of an &lit i think???

huh, did not know "hash" meant "mixture"

Yeah, basically :) (in an office the extension's basically all you use as a sort of "internal" phone number, which is what I was going for)

11:26 AM
@Volatility think along the lines of 'rehash'
Oh my
Did I, the cryptic cripple, just get a CCCC???

:) gj - now have fun setting one >:D

Ahhhh I have a clue somewhere that I sort of like, but I'm not sure if it's 100% fair (i mean, it seems fair to me, but I've had issues before)
And people tend to want CCCCs up fairly quickly, so not sure if I should think of a new one

Well... personally I think it'd be better not to feel pressured to rush :)

I might spin my potential cryptic past Deus or something

@Volatility I do believe that's how hash browns get their name, if I'm not mistaken

11:32 AM
Speaking of fair clues, is an anagram of a word with a letter removed alright or a little unfair? I remember there being discussion about this a while ago but can't remember the general consensus. E.g. "Endlessly skirt around danger (4)"
@Sp3000 makes sense. I just think of md5 and all that :)

I've used it before... I'm not sure
Some people see it as an indirect anagram

Playing with the fodder a bit before anagramming is okay IMO, as long as the word is still verbatim (so "endlessly dress" would be bad)
@Volatility ... and what does a cryptographic hash do to its input? :P

It performs a hard-to-reverse function on it :P

... by mixing it all up :P (actually I should have just dropped the "cryptographic", since the same is true for hash tables to distribute the load)

11:51 AM
I have a cryptic which I really like
Unless it breaks cryptic rules
I promise I'll post it once it's got a thumbs up from Deus!

12:25 PM
@Volatility I agree entirely with Sp3000's assessment.

ok, cool, thanks

12:56 PM
Anybody knows what happened to yesterday's puzzle about the magician and the seven cards?

It got deleted.
The person who posted it is somewhat infamous around these parts.

Why? What did he do?

I'm not sure, entirely
I wasn't around for it

Well it seemed like a weird question. I wonder if it had a solution or not

1:14 PM
We don't think it does.

Good aftermornight all

Hullo Rubio
Hullo to Will too

1:32 PM
@Rubio Mwhaha it's contagious!

Indeed. :)
CCCC: on hold - @TheGreatEscaper will post a new one when ready

Super sorry for the delays guys D:
I have a clue ready
I just need to confirm with an experienced crypticer that it is legal
Deus doesn't seem to be around anywhere that I could get him, any experienced crypticers volunteering to sit out this CCCC and check my clue?

I wouldn't worry too much, we're happy to correct or give suggestions when one isn't

Should I just post it, then?

unless you suspect it's horribly unfairly broken, go for it

1:38 PM
Alright
CCCC: Great beginnings glorified a French square (11)
Oops
There we go :D
I hardly think it's broken, but there's one thing in there that might disagree with a cryptic purist?

Looks good at first blush, and a nice surface reading. I suspect I know what's going on but I don't know enough to get to an answer

1:53 PM
In the meantime, I've gone down the dangerous path of making an ambitious puzzle
during the school term.

grabs the key from the planter

(this is a low res image so as to remove any potentially puzzley aspects of the image)

from under the planter

it's inside the planter.

under, i tell you

1:55 PM
...

all the best puzzlers put their keys under the planter ;)

... you can see it though :P

Maybe. You can see the key.

Plot twist: The key IS the planter

that's a red herring. obviously.

1:56 PM
Yeah the key is definitely still visible even in low res.
Anyway it'll be a puzzle in the guise of images of the walls of a room, much like an escape game

the visible key opens the box that has the bomb

Of course it does. That's why I grabbed it. So some other numbskull doesn't go opening random boxes.

@Khale_Kitha It's clearly a brown glass pot :P

Oh, fine, fair enough

1:57 PM
"clearly" - I do not think it means...what you think it means.... :P
I like escape games - but I like point-and-click games, in general.
Provided they aren't the ones where you have to just click randomly until you hit the magic pixel.

@JohnHC Well played - and welcome to PSE btw :)

I found the magic pixel, TGE.

@Rubio Thanks

@Khale lol. Anyway I suspect it'll be a LONG time until this puzzle is completed
At least, if it ends up going to the scope I currently plan it to go to

Now this - this I understand, TGE.

2:07 PM
Morning, everyone!

Q: Number 88 from the digits 2 0 1 and 7

KatakatoCan you use the digits 2 0 1 and 7 only once to create the number 88 ?

Morning Deus!
Evening here, though.

...Oh, I see AK returned while I was asleep. :/

yeah

Dang, 2*7^2 - 10 uses the 2 twice

2:33 PM
@TheGreatEscaper Oh man I'm excited

Hehe, TGE
This one's a stretch, but here you go: (hahaha)
(I'm aware that that, in no way, looks like 88...but still)

What about (7/0)^2 = ∞∞, the 1 slices them

lol

if you post that, will upvote

nice John =D
sqrt(-207) You can imagine that the answer is 88. (- is a sideways 1)

2:41 PM
Apparently, my power of imagination isn't that good

Referring to the sqrt of a negative being an imaginary number :P

ohhh
heh

I have a solution if you're bad at writing 7s
I mean, it's totally legal to misinterpret a 7 as a 4
totally...

oh, that's what you did.. lol

7=4 for sufficiently large values of insanity
3

2:46 PM
7=4 for sufficiently small values of handwriting =D

or if you fail to close the top of the 9
7^2 = 44

Realistically, though - this question is very broad.
It states that you can use 2, 0, 1, and 7 only once

There's no mention of not using any other numbers =D

I noticed that wording too

2:47 PM
^^^^

but I really hope that's not the answer
And additionally, it's tagged as a 'riddle'
Which probably suggests some weird interpretation

And if you REAALLY want to get picky..

Most likely just using other numbers

the answer is just 88

You can use the digits 2, 0, and 1
And 7 once.

2:47 PM
...Or that the user just didn't know the tag system here.

because 88 = 88
and using 8 is not banned

wow hexomino is awesome

Oh, good point, it's a new user

...I don't see a riddle tag
Oh, it was removed, a while ago - okay

@Ankoganit elaborate?
The board game, or something else?

2:48 PM
The user

@TheGreatEscaper The user hexomino

not just the user

A: Number 88 from the digits 2 0 1 and 7

2:49 PM
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh wowzers
That's pretty

those 10 upvotes came fast

very

Well deserved too.

idk why the asker hasn't gotten more votes

I wonder what the intended answer was, though
Well, it depends honestly

2:50 PM
assuming, if he knew the solution before posting he should get as much credit

You know the rule, Matt. Question askers don't get upvotes. :P
Sadly.

It's always hard to tell with this kind of stuff, though. And we're also assuming that this solution is unique (it's entirely possible that there's another, less pretty solution, that we overlooked)

Agreed

not just that, questions don't count toward tag badges

2:52 PM
I've popped it an upvote since it gave me some enjoyment

but our site is weird like that
"can use digits to make a number" well if not for that, I'm not sure what I would be doing with all these digits
so it looks like OP doesn't want the repeated decimal used?

...anyone else have any issues with clicking on spoilers not staying? Mine hasn't worked for weeks.
(if not longer)

works for me

kk - must just be my browser acting odd, lately.

works here

2:56 PM
Interesting - unblocking quantserve.com allowed it to start working.

...eh? double factorial?

Script must be from there, or it's a side-effect.

Double factorial is the worst notation in existence.

0, 1, and 2 get nowhere. 7 factorial once is already insanely huge.

7!! means 7*5*3*1

2:56 PM
@Deusovi agreed

Oh what

Okay, maybe not the worst. That's sin^2 vs sin^{-1}.

sinful.

dammit
