Q: How do I take a photo of people before a bright window?

user2019515How would you take a photo of people who are posing in front of a window? Ideally both the people and the background should be visible. I usually get either the background being overlighted or the people being near black. I haven't tried a flash because I want to avoid a big reflection in the w...

Wouldn't exposure bracketing also work?

6:25 PM
possibly, though depending on the quality of the optics and the amount of light inside and outside, the lens itself may still bleed light over the people without a flash
if they try doing it with any kind of lower end lens, it is going to get a glow around people that will kill the edges of people
even with a good lens, it likely still wouldn't be ideal
the reflection shouldn't be as much of an issue as he expects though since the window itself is likely far brighter
and moving it off camera would remove the issue entirely

@AJHenderson does this exposure problem also happen with film?

I'd expect so
though possibly not as severely
digital sensors are more reflective
but the optics themselves are going to disperse some amount of light in to the shadow if there is a major difference in brightness
(normally you don't notice if the image is evenly lit because it isn't enough to defeat the light that is actually being resolved there)
sometimes the effect is even sought after as it softens edges
in other news, finally got around to ordering a replacement for my broken N3 cable
atleast I hope it is the n3 cable that is broken
and not the fairly new remote trigger
figured I should probably get my remote trigger on my camera working sooner than later with under 6 weeks till baby
that way I can setup the camera in the corner of the hospital and just trigger it remotely from my pocket

7:36 PM
hey

8:20 PM
hey

ah ha
life
:)
how's it going?

8:51 PM
pretty good
getting baby on the brain

eh?

my first kid (a son) is due in 6 weeks

oh cool
i see
new subject to photograph
:)
plus a little person to look after

yeah, plus 2 weeks and 2 half weeks off work probably
and possibly more working from home beyond that

heh

8:58 PM
I'm still figuring out what to do about birth photos
need to check and see how comfortable our duula is with a camera I think

look the opposite direction

she's a family friend too

lol
i was lost for a second there

so I can hopefully get her to take some photos for me, otherwise I will put the camera on a tripod
and remote trigger it I think

thinking she was surrogate, then it dawned on me - you want her to take the photos :)

9:00 PM
just do wide angle shots and crop as needed
haha, yeah, Duula is someone who coaches a woman through delivery

yeh, a tripod in the room won't annoy any of the medical staff :)

it's a big room
I could set it up out of the way
and I have a wireless trigger

yeh, tripods seem to find themselves in the way i find, regardless of how you tuck them away
they are like living things

the delivery rooms are HUGE

wall mount! :)

9:01 PM
like the size of a hotel suite
I actually thought about wiring it in to the TV in the room so Danielle could see the baby coming out

omg

they have a mirror they can use, but the TV would give a far better shot

i am sure she doesn't want to see it as well as feel it
lol

it actually helps with delivery because you need to be able to see if what you are doing is working

this is starting to sound like a multi camera production :)

9:02 PM
the big thing is that whatever I do, it needs to be low maintenance as the baby actually arrives
I'm probably only going to have time to push a button in my pocket a few times
on my remote trigger

yeh
i imagine there are angles you do and do not want to catch

well, that's what cropping is for too
with a 24MP camera, I can crop a lot

hehe
