@EsaPaulasto "The Book" says to never put a full body human subject in the center.

Aha, a human is different from a dead object. Sounds legit, thanks, @MichaelC

@AJHenderson Have you tried the 100-400L? After being used to your 70-200 II the 100-400 will likely disappoint. Nowhere near as fast and nowhere near as sharp.

@MichaelClark yeah, but from what I hear, it is slightly sharper than the 70-200 IS II with a 2x tele on it
I'd get it as a secondary lens for use from the back of a wedding
still not set on it though, I'll have to do a lend of it first

The EF 400mm f/5.6 is very slightly better @400mm than the 70-200 II + 2X III. I don't think the 100-400 @ 400mm is that close. And the 100-400 is a dust pump. And I'd use the 70-200 II + 2X for sports, but not for a wedding.

Q: How to achieve consistent results in a home studio, when I can't leave my rig set up for too long

minor9I'm going to start shooting videos of myself in a small room in my apartment, using a DSLR camera and a simple three-point lighting kit. I'll mostly record guitar lessons, so the camera angle and lighting setup is important and have to be consistent throughout my videos. But I only own this one c...

while the OP doesn't see it, video actually adds some video specific concerns to this one
so it should probably be shipped over to Video Production
I went ahead and answered it on Photography since I think it will benefit video production and had already started a general purpose answer that would have worked for photo shoots as well, but then it occurred to me as I was writing it that it really is very different for video than for stills.
@MichaelClark I suppose that's fair. It certainly isn't my first choice, but sometimes there isn't a whole lot of other option without getting in the way
I was forced in to using the 2x I had on loan at the time for one wedding and my thought process was to get something slightly better, though if it isn't as much better as I'd been led to believe, then I wouldn't bother
I hadn't looked seriously at the lens yet since I'm no where near purchasing it and something better may come out between now and then anyway
but thanks for the info

@MattS. yeah they are very colourful

Found an odd thing about GIMP. It can not rotate an image freely, only 90 and 180 degrees and a mirror turn.
I forgot to turn the above photo straight before exporting it, but I thought it's okay, I'll just fix it in GIMP beforeb resize and unsharpen mask. But GIMP can't do it :P

@EsaPaulasto Nice image

9:33 PM
ty, it was a nice morning too :)
But I was tired after a night at work and could not hold my camera straight, and also missed leveling all the photos in export.
^^ the same problem with this one :P
Not quite a problem actually, I can always simply go and export them anew. Only showing the photos here as examples of what it is to do these things in the morning after a nightshift at work :)

10:01 PM
One thing is a problem though. The reflection on the water mirrors the amount of camera roll, so it would be important to keep the camera straight when there's reflections off a water surface in view. Leveling such a photo in post does not make for pleasing results.

does a polarising filter filter reflections out?

No, not really. Some, but not all.

Anonymous
@EsaPaulasto and would it make mirrors look dimmer?

In some cases a polarizing filter only makes the reflections more clear.
Dunno what it does to mirrors, newer took a shot at mirror with a polarizer on. Good question :)

Anonymous
@EsaPaulasto does it qualify for Q/A?

10:15 PM
Ask - Can a mirror be used to test if a polarizing filter is working as it should?

Anonymous
@EsaPaulasto what I explicitely want to know is "What would happen if I took a picture of a mirror with a polarising filter?"

Though I don't know if that is a real problem... When I bought a CPL filter at first I did not see much difference in photos, so I did some experiments to find out what it does and what not. But I don't remember anymore what those experiments was.

Anonymous
@EsaPaulasto could you please ask it for me?

Why don't you ask it? Worst that can happen is that it gets closed.
Anything beyond that is only good.

@EsaPaulasto i'm busy translating something, also, I don't care much about rep :)

10:21 PM
Heh, well, I should be able to answer it, so I'd rather not fake that I'm actually asking it. Though I fail to give an answer to you now :(

ok then I'll ask it later

Q: How does a polarizing filter work?

user137630I know what a polarizer does to the light, and how it works technically (filtering out some of the oscillation directions of the electromagnetic radiation), and also how this affects pictures (removing or enhancing reflected objects, and providing a clearer picture in general). I was wondering ...

A: In which situations should I use my circular polarizing filter?

GuffaA polarizing filter removes secondary light, i.e. light that has bounced on a surface and become polarized. This happens when light bounces off of things like a water surface, glass window, and even in the atmosphere. (Light that bounces off a metal surface doesn't get polarized though.) If you...

@EsaPaulasto a computer screen does a better job, and no, it isn't reflections that polarizers impact, it is glare
which is a slightly different thing, yes, it's a type of reflected light, but only a particular one
I'm having fun with scanning from photos now
ie, fun with curves
making offwhite backgrounds white and solid blacks

@AJHenderson can you please elaborate?
