3 hours later…
9:11 AM
@jrista: i'd like to get your opinion on this small-scale photo contest I am running :)
http://www.flickr.com/groups/grass-hoppers/discuss/72157629602621691/
which pic would you pick as #1 and #2?
@all: comments are welcome :D
and the submission ends in next 3 hours, so the judging will start very soon

10:08 AM
hey @ShutterBug

@ShutterBug Hmm, some are very nice images, but maybe not perfect for the theme, and others that fit the theme aren't great images. Ones that are both IMO would be Kumar Bishwajit's Holi festival one, Samy Abdul Wahed, Zayed Imam, and maybe Shoummo.

@ShutterBug did you buy the tickets?

10:27 AM
@jrista I got a couple of bug shots :) it's a very interesting balance between urge to get a nice photo and urge to stay away from bees that sting
@jrista @rfusca Bumble bee

11:26 AM
should'v changed to f11

11:48 AM
@MikeW thank you :)
@fluf I got them from the cricket board as a gift, but wont be able to take a day off from office :(

@ShutterBug ahh well thats awesome of you :)

12:07 PM
@fluf yeah, too bad my team made it to the finals, which, tbh i did not expect lol... no I am kinda regretting the decision... anyways I'll keep my commitment :D

12:36 PM
hehe
@ShutterBug flickr.com/photos/ksmit/6856478408/in/photostream how do you like my reverse macro ?

1 hour later…
1:45 PM
@mattdm - I went to go make some updates to this answer of yours, but I'm not even sure if it is salvageable when considering the newest changes with the iPad. What do you think? photo.stackexchange.com/a/18230/4892

2:17 PM
@dpollitt hmmm. most of it except the resolution still applies, yeah?

hellloo
This probably has changed "very limited RAW development options"
and the resolution, yes
and after reading this(displaymate.com/iPad_ShootOut_1.htm), I think that the color calibration is less of an issue. They seem to think that the color is almost spot on out of the box.
but the fact that you can't adjust the calibration is still true.. just maybe less important now that it is more accurate and the color space is larger
I will say - thank you for your response. that has guided me in my purchase of an ipad :) I will be testing it out on vacation next week to really put it through its paces
I'm using photogene to convert RAW to jpg then editing in either photogene or iphoto

3:03 PM
@fluf whoa! you're totally at it! good progress mate ;)

:) I'm a fast learner but there's still a lot of room for improvement
thanks :)

just so you know, theres nothing better than a dedicated macro lens if you're really dedicated :)

@ShutterBug I think I'd pick #1. Both are good, but #1 really shows skill with a camera and artistic flare. The little boy who is the subject has a great expression on his face as well.

3:29 PM
@jrista I think he was suggesting to look at all of them and pick the top 2, not just rank the first two on the list

1 hour later…
4:42 PM
@rfusca exactly :)

Hey everyone! Looking for some shopping advice :-)
Anyone have thoughts on either the Nikon D5100 or the Cannon Rebel T3i?
Looking for comparisons between the two, specifically areas like lenses...

Sorry, I'd love to help but I know nothing about Nikon

NP, thanks @Vian

I will say, you should go to a camera store and try out both bodies because Nikon and Canon have pretty different interfaces

Or if you do have a camera you particularly love, I'm open to suggestions
@VianEsterhuizen good point. I have used Nikons before and know their interfaces fairly well

4:53 PM
I don't know if you've played with either camera, but way before I was a Canon lover I found Nikon very strangely set up. But that may be a lot different.

@VianEsterhuizen Played with both very briefly, going to head out today and test them more thoroughilly

I was actually just going to try to up sell you to the 60D haha, but doing a quick comparison. I don't know why you would. The T3i and 60D are almost identical
For the $150 difference between those two, I would rather get the T3i and get the EF 50mm 1.8 II

Yeah that's why I'm looking at these two, so I can have some cash left over for more lenses

Which Nikon actually has an equivalent for, and I would highly recommend it if it's anything like the Canon one

4:59 PM
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm
That's the lens I'm talking about
That best buy deal seems fairly decent, the lens would be quite useful

Thanks for your advice @Vian!

Also, are you just getting into photography or you been at it a while?

I'm a hobbiest photographer, but when times got tough ad to sell my older Nikon
So I'm fairly out of practice
having only been using crappy cheap digital cameras / cell phone cameras for the past 4+ years :-(

Oh, okay
All I was going to say in big giant billboard letters was BE WARNED, YOU'RE GETTING YOURSELF INTO AN EXPENSIVE HOBBY
But I'm sure you know that

haha!

5:10 PM
Good luck though

Thanks @Vian! I appreciate your input

Definately thoroughly try out the cameras, especially when choosing between the brands and don't leave out other brands if you're really looking. Like Pentax
And maybe look at some lenses you expect to buy or buy in the future and compare prices and so on.

Good advice
I wanted the Sony NX-7, but it's way more expensive, and unavailable at the moment
Newer non-SLR technology

Once you're with a brand, it's tough to switch

Yeah and I've always been a Nikon guy

5:17 PM
I was always going to be a Canon guy, my mom has been shooting Canon since she was my age. I really had no choice haha
Also, Nikon has this, which I bought anyway. Got to tape over the logos or something if I go in publice but I'm quite happy with it because it's a fairly good deal.
I'm also pretty interested in those mirrorless cameras, never tried one though

@VianEsterhuizen lmao @ taping over the logos
@VianEsterhuizen I played with them at a local shop, they're really light!

:P
Really light? Hmmm, I know that should be a good thing but I like using things that have a bit of weight to them

@VianEsterhuizen I know, it's a mixed bag
I could get some really interesting shots with those, and they could be great for hiking with
(I'm in the Appalachian mountains, lots of great photo spots around here)
but I too am used to cameras with some heft to them
Headed to lunch and then to check out some cameras. Thanks again for your advice @VianEsterhuizen!

Yeah, I get what you mean. I've been keeping an eye out for good deals on compact cameras
No problem
Good luck, and make sure to come check in here again and let me/us know what you decided

5:42 PM
Will do!

5:53 PM
@Josh the sensor on the Nikon is much, much better than the Canon
much cleaner
its the same sensor they put in the D7000 which is top notch, but the Canon has the same sensor they put in their lower end cameras
lens-wise its a wash between the two brands

I have to agree with @rfusca here on the sensor and I have a t3i

:)

6:10 PM
J. Walker has arrived. The party has begun!
Hello everyone.

hello

Hey, that spider picture was scary. Would have been nicer if he used a higher aperture. Hey did you take the spider picture?

@JWalker which one?

@rfusca The one that I'm replying to.

yes, but it was already f/11 - depth of field is rather thin at macro distances

6:13 PM
I understand.
HEY EVERYBODY! I'M REALLY HAPPY TODAY!

apparently - any particular reason

Yeah... I TOUCHED A CAMERA! HAHAHAAAA...

ok...

Yeah!
Sorry... I just got excited.

indeed

6:16 PM
What's your favorite picture that you ever took?

Beautiful. Is the red one a rose?
These three are my favorites.

I love your picture of the moon!

cool :)
Thanks

6:21 PM
Thanks. The fence one won a blue ribbon at a photography festival down in St. Louis.

Really? nice

I also like this one.
It won't upload.

@jrista @rowlandshaw - do you think we could contact all the potw winner and see about the rights to offer a book that is the collection of PotW photos
2
@JWalker too big?

@rfusca Probably

@jrista @rowland not for us to sell, so much as to offer to buy directly from the printer

6:25 PM
@rfusca So what were you saying about the collection? I don't think that I am quite following you.

We run a weekly contest and I was thinking it might be nice to offer a book that is a collection of all the winning photos

@rfusca A book? Like for people to buy???

@JWalker yes

@JWalker ahh my pet cat :) I have one in my back yard
living in Africa and all it's how we roll

lol

6:35 PM
>:D

if thats the cat you talk about disliking, I think I understand why

hahaha
I always find it funny how people think we have elephants and lions in the streets

wait...don't you!?

I've never even seen a wild lion

well thats boring
why live in Africa then

6:36 PM
very
we've got spiders and snakes though :(

we've got that here

We do have the small deer that you see every now and again
and in George (home town) there are leopards in the woods (though I haven't seen them)

leopards...now there ya go
I'm gonna need a picture of you with your head in a leopards mouth
just to prove it

There are wild elephants in the Knysna woods that I know of (50km away from George)

(and its punishment for the great puppy slaughter of '12)

6:40 PM
@rfusca I don't think my head will fit

@fluf you're head is that big eh?

don't think the cats are as big as lions

dang, go get a lion

btw have you seen how big a lion's paw is O_O
the male paw when relaxed is like bigger than my hand with my fingers extended

no surprise
its like they use them to hunt and kill or something
;)

6:44 PM
hehe
I'm sure I have a pic somewhere
it was insanely hot that day

ic

also white tiger
I know you can't really see the size of the paw because there isn't anything to compare it too but it was taken a couple years back :P didn't know better
night off to bed early

lol
nod

That lion picture that I took was at the zoo.
We have a ton of deer in our backyard.

?
looks oddly un-deer like

6:54 PM
I'm gonna submit this one for the 'fire' contest for the picture on the frontpage.

ah, ic
@fluf you gonna try a fire photo?

Sorry... I'll fish around in my files and see if I have and deer pictures. OH FISH! Does anyone have any fish pictures or pictures taken with an underwater camera?

@jwalker - btw, this question suggests you may want to read this

@rfusca Why did you put a link to that question here?

i'm saying..you asked that question...and it indicates you might want to read the book I linked

6:59 PM
Okay... I feel really dumb. I will slap myself in the face for you. I will definitely take a look at that book.

lol, k

I like the January 23 picture. i.stack.imgur.com/BWRDZ.jpg
@rfusca What's that supposed to mean?

@JWalker nothing...

I'm bored...

@JWalker yup

7:04 PM
What's the worst picture you've ever taken?

@JWalker check out this one meta.photo.stackexchange.com/a/794/1917
@JWalker lol, probably a picture of nothing particular by accident....got deleted half a second later...

@rfusca Nice... I see you also posted your rose picture for that contest.

@JWalker yup

Do you know if you're allowed to post the same picture for multiple contests?

"A specific photo may be submitted at most two weeks in a row, and not more than four times a year."

7:06 PM
Thank you... I've been enlightened
Have you eaten lunch yet?
LOL

yes

Are you still hungry?

no

Good... I'm still bored.

go take a picture
3

7:09 PM
AWESOME! You know how to cheer a guy up! Would you mind if I star that message?

ok...

This is the picture I just took. I'm not bored anymore. Thanks rfusca!

:)

I work for a large, international logistics firm. Currently I focus mainly rail logistics involving real time reporting of rail statuses with ad hoc user generated queries and data warehousing of operational metrics to drive up internal efficiency. I'm proficient in MySQL (although I don't prefer it), Postgresql, Oracle, PHP, and C#.

7:30 PM
@JWalker Thats me :)

7:55 PM
@ShutterBug ah, sorry
@ShutterBug: Well, doesn't change the fact that I like #1 :P
#2: pusan_sm says: Pursuit of Happiness !
@rfusca Assuming all the submitters have provided valid ways to contact them via their accounts, we could if we wanted to.
Mods and Admins can view anyone email address.
@fluf Bees are pretty benign until you start acting all fearish around them, you know. ;)
I never have a problem with bees...my brother always freaks out, and they always go after him. Just stay relaxed...they'll never bug you.

8:25 PM
i guess i'm wondering if we should

I think if we did, it might be better to wait until the end of the year so we have more content. Unless your thinking we would just do a small booklet every year?

@jrista i didn't have a timeframe in mind
just thought it might make a good coffeetable book for folks

1 hour later…
9:39 PM
@rfusca I think @Laura already had done something similar

9:59 PM
Really? Where can I see it at?
Is anyone here right now?
Hello!
Hey guys I'm back!
lorem

@RowlandShaw really? hmm i'll have to ask her when she gets back

dolor
Oh! Hi rfusca!

Have you ever been downvoted?

it happens

10:11 PM
Yeah... :( I got downvoted for the first time today :( x2
Did you downvote me? >:-(
Just kidding... LOL

10:33 PM
@rfusca Thanks!

Sorry you're competing with my new toy for my attention @rfusca ;-)

@JoshGitlin lol i understand

Mostly nature photography, scenery, etc

ic

10:38 PM
I'm in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so lots of nice vistas here!

very nice

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. It runs for 469 miles (755 km), mostly along the famous Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Its southern terminus is on the boundary between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina, from which it travels north to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and offers access to the Skyline Drive, the major north/south artery through the Park. The two All-American Byways are separate...

so a decent tripod is in your future
ya, i know where they are ;)

@rfusca indeed! I looked at some but adding a tripod to my shopping experience today was more than my poor ol credit card was willing to bear for me :-p

@francesco best note on a flag, ever
@JoshGitlin lol for sure
just don't get a cheap 30 dollar one, worse than no tripod
(but don't let folks convince you that you need a 500 dollar one either, there are ones inbetween)

10:42 PM
haha thanks!
Okay, off to play with my new toy :-D

ciao, enjoy
post some pics in chat!
