Technically I would write: SUM(ARRAYFORMULA(VALUE(range))). The ARRAYFORMULAtakes on a range, just as in a custom function. It's very powerfull. If you leave out the SUM, then a formatted range of values is returned. In many cases you can avoid having to copy/past formula, which is more laborious and faulty.
