8:44 AM
Okay - Trying to work out combat with RFS characters.
:D

so what is your main concern about it?

All right. Since I'm actually trying to run a dungeon crawl, not a traditional RFS game, I'm thinking that you can have say... 5 XP to get started, so did you want to make up a couple of skills, while I start running an encounter together?
I'm just trying to run a few numbers and if you don't mind, get some playing experience in mind toactually figure out how to do this.

ah, so you are not just trying to make combat work, you want people to start with combat skills and such

If you don't want to play, I'm happy just to brainstorm :)
Well, I want to make combat work, but I'm not sure of the best way to do it...

no that is fine, it would be best to test it out I think

8:48 AM
That's what I was thinking... Now, skill wise. I could easily just start with no combat skills, or give you XP to start with.

well, one thing you could do is start with a couple encounters and let people get their skills organically
starting with xp is probably a good idea
I just don't know how much it probably should be

That could work. Just have a mini dungeon first for character development...

sort of yeah
I think that is the are in which RFS shines

Yeah, I think you're right. And that works with my setting really well actually.

if you have your PC's just make stuff up before they do anything it might be better to use some other system

8:51 AM
But I want to use RFS :P

yeah

Now, I have to find out a way to make RFS work for combat encounters...

that is why I suggest doing it this way

Yup :)

so I think the best thing we can do now is jump into it, like fighting goblins with a skill of 1 or 2 or something

8:53 AM
So, RFS doesn't actually support HP, and I don't want to introduce even more stats for people to keep track of... What do you think of using XP as a sort of stand in for HP?
Hey, ready whenever you are :)
Well pick it up on the go.

mk
that is a good question,...
I don't think xp should be hp,.. I think they should be seperate
we might want to just give my test PC like, 5-10 hp

Try it, and see how it goes.

and either have every defense roll he fails give 1 damage or damage equal to the difference
just a sec

You stand in a deep dark forest, with no idea how you arrived, and no memory of your skills - such as they may be - beforehand. As you turn to get your bearings, you notice a goblin sitting on a log facing away from you. Too late! You stepped on a twig, and now he's turning your way!
Damage equal to the number of dice rolled is what I was thinking of, and your HP is equal to your number of skills?
Well...
Number of skills + 3

ok I am back

9:00 AM
Welcome back :)

we can test that sure, interesting idea

I figured I'd be nice and give you the first move against the goblin. Who will swing his sword at you, and try to block your attacks.

ok, so I will just assume basic, I have a sword

With... His arm. Because he's a goblin and not that smart. (And apparantly multiclassed as a monk)
You have... Damn.

unless you want to make people roll for having weapons

9:01 AM
Equipment.

maybe,... both of us have to roll to have weapons

I want you to roll for equipment, but I want this to be serious.
Roll for quality.

d6

yay
that is great

9:02 AM
You have 1 point to purchase equipment. Do you want a sword, a shield, armor?

I will go with a sword

d6

Wow, that's one well prepared Goblin. He's going to buy a sword, and throw the other 3 points away cause he's cocky.
I'm thinking that weapons count as Skill - 1 to start, so why don't you attack the goblin?

mk
d6

9:03 AM

The goblin screams at the incoming attack, and quickly brings his arm around to try and intercept the blow.
d

The goblin screams as his arm falls to the floor useless. Enraged, he launches foward towards you, with a quick overhand chop.

9:05 AM

ooh

The double rolling kinda sucks... I liked Pixies idea of the GM rolling, but I don't have any idea. I can use RPOL or Roll20 to roll and not spam people though.
Oh no!
This goblin obviously needs glasses! He missed your head, but you got a nasty scrape across the chest.

ok, well, I think I will swing at him again
d

d

9:08 AM

I will spend one xp to get fighting 2

As your sword comes around for a second try, the goblin tries to clamber out of the way. He doesn't, and your well timed swing takes a big chunk out of his midsection. Enraged, the goblin drops his sword and jumps, trying to bite you.

9:10 AM

I'm going to say that fighting 2 will let you defend as well as attack, but some more specialised skills will be one or the other?

yeah
that seems right
if I get a 3 skill from this, it has to be like, dodging or somthing

Well...
If you use your 2 skills to get fighting, it makes sense you could use your 3 skills for sword fighting, then you can make thrusting 4 and parrying 4 for offense and defnese?
The goblin missed your throat, and ended up knocking you to the ground, before crawling backwards reaching for his sword.

the skill I get from this action has to be related to what I am doing
I am defending against an attack with a 2 skill
that means I could spend 2 xp to make a 3 skill, but that 3 skill has to be defensive in some way

Are you defending an attack, or are you continuing to fight with a sword? Just a matter of opinion I guess, but that makes sense.

9:16 AM
d

I forgot to add a dice

I think that 2 and 3 skills should be more multi-purpose, but I'll see how we go.
Yeah, I realised :P

I am dodging his bite right now I would think

That's why the goblin failed anyway lol
The goblin didn't knock you to the ground at all, and is still teaching for his sword
Now I just hear the mortal kombat announcer - Finish Him!

9:17 AM
fight 2 to try to finish him
2d6

d

Draw to player - We're only rolling D6 after all.
The goblin screams as your sword plunges into his body, wresting the last life from him. Though you feel no pride for your act, you rest safe in the knowledge that one less child will die in his sleep now
All right, I'm done for the day. Thanks for the help! :)

mk
glad to help
we can work on this again later probably

9:24 AM
Yeah, I'll be back on next week, so will hopefully have someone else to try and see how multiple person combat is going to go...

it might take some of the random roll pressure off
