@NathanC there is still a way: attach an USB-controller power plug to the RPi, and enable power on $remote command. or get a network power control device, and have your PC boot directly after power failure.

@MichaelHampton local bike shop to get the bike fit adjusted just right is important. 50-60 miles in 8-12 hours doesn't have to be any more strenuous than walking.

@MichaelHampton the people that I know that have done these types of crossings seem to end up replacing everything they brought with a stouter thing at least once on the trip, under duress, via fedex.
@RyJones The bike pictures I saw already show a quite stout bike with stout components. That front rack, for instance, is a tank. Will probably need fresh brake pads and a new chain at some point, though...
One great thing about the bar-end shifters on that bike: if the shifting is a smidge off, you can turn a little thing on the shifter to switch from indexed to straight friction and just adjust on the fly (instead of requiring immediate work)

I think the "ballast" width for a modern railway gives enough room to ride on reasonably... Some even have trails... Or maybe he just means on-road routes that stay near the rail routes...

Is it possible to install software on Linux without package manager at all?
@Wesley I usually feel like blowing up the data center would suffice without any actual human fatalities... The tricky part is that to really do it right, I'd need to get something into the offsite backup tape box(es)...
Like, oh I don't know, a non-case-sensitive SQL collation combined with a case sensitive comparator in the application causing the correct number of records to be returned but exactly 0 records to be processed by the application
