1:00 PM
wget "https://pm.puppetlabs.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi?dist=el&rel=7&arch=x86_64&ver=latest"
Yes, my puppetmaster is on EL 7

I'll look into it

Aha! so I change "3.3.1" to "current" in the agent yumrepo and now it tracks latest.
Now good luck doing that across 124 systems without a puppet module.

One thing I'd like to remember how to do is run adhoc puppet resources from the CLI
I saw then do this in training...

puppet apply --modulepath=/etc/puppetlabs/puppet/modules some_random_file.pp

No, I've seen people do it without a manifest.
loading my puppet training vm to go through history
puppet apply -e 'file { "/tmp/adhoc": content => "Written from puppet\n", mode => 640 }'

> Programming languages such as PHP have built in functions that can encrypt. An example is the base 64 encryption function

@ewwhite Oh OK, close enough

@MichaelHampton handy, kinda?

@Bob efail.com, eh?

@ewwhite Yeah, it can be useful. Though the times I've had to use that, I had much more stuff to do and put it in a file anyway.
@ewwhite Looks like we'll soon have an official puppet module to upgrade PE.

1:36 PM
@Bob meh, ROT13 4 LYFE
And lets do it twice just to be safe.

@Bob LOL

@DennisNolte Hmmm. Retail | Canada |

Damn Soviet America Canadians.

@Bob face meet desk

1:47 PM
(The proper way to refer to the Soviet Republic of Canada is as Canuckistan, in case anyone was wondering.)

@ewwhite disagree on that part: "It robs us of our creativity and ability to contribute to work, society, the world." i would never live for work society or the world.. fuck all of them.

@DennisNolte Amen to that. If I was a little bit smarter, or trip and fall into a large pile of cash one day, I'll have enough money to retire, live out my life completely selfishly, and contribute nothing to anyone.
Well, except for maybe the handful of people I can tolerate. You know, friends and family. They can partake of my selfish life, but fuck everyone else. What's society or the world ever done for me anyway?

@HopelessN00b make sure you survive until now.

2:08 PM
I think I made the ugliest Puppet manifest ever. And I'm not even sorry!

2:28 PM
morning

@Basil indeed

@RyJones And what a morning...

@Basil yeah? pregnant?

@RyJones "Congratulations sir, it's a FC director"

@ewwhite Disregarded warnings and clicked link, computer now has herpes. What do?

oops

2:32 PM
@ewwhite Just rub some dirt on your balls. The herp can't stand it and leaves.

Download PC Cleaner from Tucows...

heh
I love how ironic those "cleaners" are.

@ewwhite TuCows is still a thing?

@ewwhite Instructions unclear, dongle caught in ceiling fan

So, I don't know if it's just the shitty headphones I have, but I tried using my bluetooth headphones yesterday with a bluetooth dongle (heh)...and it was terrible.
Sound kept cutting out, and when it worked it was a good 1-2 second delay, so hardly usable.

2:36 PM
@NathanC that depends often on the dongle.
you should check for apt-X steroe encoder support and for a non-cambridge chip.
Broadcom f.e. (BLE speaking)
the cheap chips are often falsely advertised as "Bus 1 Device 7: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)"
this one works for us (not exactly audio transfer though):
>> Bus 001 Device 008: ID 0a5c:21e8 Broadcom Corp.
i remember it having a way better recension than the other ones.

@DennisNolte Rocketfish (broadcom chip)
I also got a couple cheap ones that were even worse

@RyJones Oh yeah. Publicly traded too, and about 70% higher value than Radio Shack. =)

It was a royal pain to get working drivers for that thing too

@Wesley yowza

@NathanC can you say the vendor and product id please?

2:42 PM
@DennisNolte As it's at home, not currently :X I'll have to get the info tonight when I'm home, lol

@RyJones I did my math all wrong. I suck. Tucows is trading at $15, Radio Shack is $0.90.
So yeah, a little bit more than 70%

@Wesley depends on the amount of stocks though.

I accidentally a decimal and also numbers.

And of course I didn't wake it up from sleep before I left, so no remote ha

@NathanC no small RPi or something with wake on lan on the "real" server?
sadly i fried my 2 onboard Lan ports somehow after moving.. new one does't like having WOL...

2:45 PM
@DennisNolte Home PC's wifi only...so no dice :P

@NathanC there is still a way: attach an USB-controller power plug to the RPi, and enable power on $remote command. or get a network power control device, and have your PC boot directly after power failure.
@NathanC no cable pff..

@DennisNolte Mmm...Pi.
@DennisNolte Yeah...my room's across the apartment from the modem, so I didn't have a choice. I'd choose wired any day for a desktop.
Don't feel like running a 50ft cable across the ceiling, though.

@NathanC i wouldn't move anywhere i am not allowed to lay down my own infrastructure.. Sadly i am too spoiled because of the house of my parents, 2-3 Internet connections, all linked, failover, and all the other crazy mess you can do when you got enough time and people who lack understanding in what you do :)

3:11 PM
@RyJones AOL is still a thing. Stupid crap that people inexplicably keep using has a long life span. Not dignified, but long-lived.

I'm harassing the nordic version of HBO streaming on Facebook
They said that they were developing an app for Apple TV in early 2013.. still no app
When I confront them about it they just reply "We do not give out any information about new platforms until they're ready." - and now I've linked them three different articles from 2013 where they pledge support for Apple TV, Playstation, LG/Sony Smart-TV's etc..
They still only support Samsung Smart-TV's and Xbox 360. Not a single app for any other platform.. how is this even possible in 2014?

@HopelessN00b my mum still insists on using the AOL Browser. I've shown my dad the light with firefox but she still clings to her compiled-over-15-years favourites list.
I have disgraced adminkind.

@Nick I feel so let down that none of these have called me. Seems like everyone is getting them.

Bob
@Wesley Heh. I want to see them call @cole. Then he pulls out one of those NT machines :)

A: Change Mozilla settings globally on internal network

ChristosI think that if you sync all the browsers, you re going to be able to configure only one client and all others will follow with the sync.

Is it just me or is this guy off his rocker? He's using Firefox Sync to force every user to use a single profile.

@MichaelHampton I make all users share the same mailbox. You imply that this is a problem?
email@company.com should be good enough for everyone.
At every company.
Let's just have one internet mailbox.

3:54 PM
@RyJones One of the reasons I have trust issues with technology

4:07 PM
@Wesley You just need to accept that on the internet, there are stupid people and that they are wrong and that you can't fix their brains over the internet...

@Christos Not to mention this is a massive security risk. Sync also applies to passwords and any tabs open! — Nathan C 10 secs ago
Bet he didn't think to check what it actually syncs...

Bob
@NathanC You could uncheck those options :P
(doesn't make the whole idea any less awful)

@Bob You sure could, but a user can just check the box on their own...

Bob
@NathanC which would only make sense if they wanted to share their passwords/tabs with others
or... "ooh, checkboxes!" I suppose
@NathanC "I told it to upload my data, so it did. It's a security risk!"
Does FF Sync even apply for settings? I didn't think so...

I don't think it applies to the about:settings stuff since it's cross-platform
But as I don't use it, I wouldn't know :P

Bob
4:18 PM
@NathanC Apparently limited

@Wesley I have a nice zip bomb with a windows ME virtual machine ready for when I get a call :p

@freiheit We can fix stupid! We have the technology! pull starts chainsaw

@freiheit I want new wheels.
@Iain would like them, too

4:38 PM
@ewwhite Send me a pair, too. So that I can sell them and buy a new bike. ;)

@freiheit they're on sale for half-price!
But the Mavic Exalithâ„¢ coating seems scary

@ewwhite half-price would still cover replacing my LHT with a disc-LHT...

@ewwhite New Disc Trucker Frame+Fork is a smidge under $500. Complete bike is closer to $1500.

@freiheit do some Puppet stuff for me, and I'll hook it up.

4:55 PM
@ewwhite That is not how you smuggle stuff!

Look at this... I offer @freiheit free bike money!
well, in exchange for services

@ewwhite What Puppet stuff do you need?

5:16 PM
sup suckers

@MichelZ Nerd.

5:36 PM
@Wesley nooooooo!!!!

@MichelZ yeeeeee

5:52 PM
@freiheit I'll make a list.

@Bob all the NT4 boxes are gone!
However

When autoformat fails...

Coworker and I were just talking about how fickle this W2K server was being
Coworker: maybe it's just having a tough time with life because it's almost old enough to get it's learners permit
Cole: It's rebeling
Cole: you know kids that age.

6:10 PM
We got an invitiation tho a PRFCAT party.
20 years of the same old program running business critical stuff. Fun.
(based on a 16 bit paradox db)

@cole Pretty soon it'll drive away into the sunset and won't be home until after curfew.

6:25 PM
No excuse for this server installation. The tech didn't understand the rail kit. #sysadmin #hp #supermicro #rack http://t.co/00xoNgzMu1
Yay... twitter

@ewwhite Wow!

@NathanC I hope it gets into a car accident and dies.
@ewwhite whoa!

6:46 PM
Anyone use policy based autosigning in puppet ?

@freiheit heh

I've written like 10 powershell scripts in the past 2 weeks.

Wumpus Q. WumbleyAn error message from apt-get wouldn't mention aptitude. Did you alias apt-get to aptitude and forget about it? It may be time to unalias apt-get

Who does that?!?!

lol

7:18 PM
It's funny. Assert that you should get a divorce if you feel the need to run your spouse down in public gets people indignant, but the running down of the spouse is apparently A O K

8:10 PM
@Bob The same people who run Debian and Ubuntu.

Ugh, SuperUser. Why do they even...
Wow, great story. However, uninstalling Chrome is not a way to fix not being able to download files in Chrome.HopelessN00b 52 secs ago

I mostly don't go to SU these days. Too depressing.

@ewwhite I've been considering starting to use twitter
Maybe not with my real name

8:25 PM
@HopelessN00b it's ok, that guy then read some other googles. I wonder if he used the google to do that.

@HopelessN00b Keep getting rep on SU so you can be Lord High Noobslayer in the next elections.
Heck, @JourneymanGeek got elected to SU and he's one of the sickest freaks in this place.

I'm glad I deleted all my accounts on non-SO, non-SF sites.

8:41 PM
I read several SE sites semi-regularly, like Travel

8:55 PM
@Wesley It's the delete votes I really need the rep for. At this rate, in ten years, I'll be able to cast enough delete votes a day to cancel out at least 15 minutes' worth of crap.

@mfinni Haven't seen you in a bit - how's things?

Things is good, busy
Still at the same client for the last year+ now, still their exchange admin but working them through a 6000-user child company divestiture
Lots of Quest tools lying around here, which is good, but a lot of adjunct work to make it all happy too

@Basil @StorageVixxxen

9:14 PM
@mfinni Good good. Learning new things? Staying competitive? Getting paid cheddar? =)

@freiheit I have something for you...

@ewwhite freiheit@gmail.com

rawr... I was just going to send pics.

@ewwhite whatev

No really...

9:27 PM
@ewwhite whatever communication method you prefer is fine

Well here it goes... NSFW.
Look at that rear-end!!

@ewwhite Did their own bar wrap job, huh?

and those curves
It's some guy who is going to move to Seattle... and decided to ship his belongings and take 6 weeks to ride there from Chicago.

@ewwhite Fully loaded tour?

9:38 PM
@freiheit Yes... at the bike shop, the people were concerned that this guy had never done any touring before..

the end of that route is right by where I work

@MichaelHampton So about 2 and a half of my commute round-trip every day for 6 weeks?

Yeah, I think 50-60 mile average days, with some rest days thrown in, ought to do it.
If the guy's in decent shape he ought to be fine, though I think he should visit his doctor rather than his local bike shop about that part.

Q: Theoretical hardware recommendation for low-latency infrastructure

Jean-PaulI do algorithmic trading as a hobby, and I'm about to step up my game in terms of latency. I have two questions regarding appropriate hardware and database software. Question 1. Before I will purchase my hardware, I would like to know what is in general a good setup for storing many datapoints...

@MichaelHampton pretty sure that stretch from Montana to Seattle is going to kill him

9:46 PM
@RyJones Sure, it'll be hard. But after 1000 miles of rolling hills it ought not to be TOO hard.
(The midwest and great plans are NOT flat!)

He'll likely die.
so we're just waiting on the news reports.

@MichaelHampton yeah, I grew up there, thanks for the tip

@ewwhite O, ye of little faith.

he's fortunate that the section at the end is rail-to-trail, so the grade is gentle, if constant.
riding over to Eastern Washington from Seattle is a common thing for moderately fit riders

@MichaelHampton local bike shop to get the bike fit adjusted just right is important. 50-60 miles in 8-12 hours doesn't have to be any more strenuous than walking.
@ewwhite When his brakes give out while carrying 100 pounds of gear down a 10,000 foot descent?

9:50 PM
No, when hit by a driver.

On I-90?

Usually the story goes like, "X was riding across [large part of US] on a bicycle and was struck and killed by [yokel, drunk driver, BUS]"

You can ride on most of the interstates out west, but you need balls of steel and extremely puncture resistant tires...

Oh, that's just the Daily Mail. They love stories like that.

Exactly.

@ewwhite I'll raise you a hippo...

@ewwhite So sandpaper, spare brake pads, and a vehicular cycling class?

Where are all the news stories about people who don't get hit by drunk drivers?

@MichaelHampton on youtube with scary gopro videos
So, I do think the danger is greatly overstated, and he'll be fine biking over provided the limit is wide open on a credit card

10:00 PM
@MichaelHampton "Cyclists safely completes commute with absolutely no bad interactions with any vehicles" isn't exactly newsworthy.

Motel-to-motel cycling?

@MichaelHampton usually called "credit card touring"...

@MichaelHampton the people that I know that have done these types of crossings seem to end up replacing everything they brought with a stouter thing at least once on the trip, under duress, via fedex.

@freiheit CC touring, for when you don't like slow-cooking in your own body soil and human juices.

@RyJones Yeah. I can see that. Me, I do my shopping beforehand and don't just buy the first thing that looks good from Wally World...

10:02 PM
@RyJones The bike pictures I saw already show a quite stout bike with stout components. That front rack, for instance, is a tank. Will probably need fresh brake pads and a new chain at some point, though...

@freiheit I don't know enough to judge.

One great thing about the bar-end shifters on that bike: if the shifting is a smidge off, you can turn a little thing on the shifter to switch from indexed to straight friction and just adjust on the fly (instead of requiring immediate work)
@RyJones "Surly" is a brand known for making stout stuff.

hello

@mossy Tasty tasty hunk of man meat

@freiheit Oh, the guy said he would ride along rail lines in case he wanted to take the train for awhile to rest...
...

10:17 PM
@ewwhite OK, maybe he is going to die. Of stupidity.

@ewwhite There's some ambiguity in the word "along" here... :)

@ewwhite that is a spectacular way to die.

I got this!!

I think the "ballast" width for a modern railway gives enough room to ride on reasonably... Some even have trails... Or maybe he just means on-road routes that stay near the rail routes...

@freiheit have you seen the mountains of ballast used out west? it's at the angle of repose and it's steeper than shit

10:19 PM
@MarkHenderson sup

@ewwhite I saw one of those with a lightweight outrigger, so you could tip over sideways to escape death. that one looks too heavy to get out of the way

@freiheit the latter

@MarkHenderson dad pls
WHY CANT I COME IN HERE AND SAY HI LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE
3
I have to deal with this shit every time i go outside, mark
Just let me chat like a non celeb
OK
@MarkHenderson seriously tho, he's creepy.

10:22 PM
@mossy Sorry if my face offends you :(

@MarkHenderson It doesn't respect my souls personal space.
why are you awake
isn't it like 5am

Hmm?

@mossy why dioes everyone think its 5am?
Its 8:30am
And Ive been at work for over an hour already

@MarkHenderson ah, i don't know time zones.
i just guess most of the time.
what year is it?

10:40 PM
@mossy 2022

Q: How to install software on Linux without package managers?

Boda CydoI'm completely puzzled about how to install software on Linux without package managers. I recently messed up apt and I'm unable to apt-get install anything. Is it possible to install software on Linux without package manager at all?

oh god

10:55 PM
@MarkHenderson lick

@Wesley prr

11:11 PM
@MarkHenderson Ever had a day where every problem seemed like a perfect scenario to be solved by a killing spree?

I'm not really a fan of moving.
Kinda a pain

@Wesley I usually feel like blowing up the data center would suffice without any actual human fatalities... The tricky part is that to really do it right, I'd need to get something into the offsite backup tape box(es)...

@freiheit What if your DC is Amazon. =(

@Wesley Cancel your account?

@freiheit ...

11:18 PM
@Wesley say really terrible things about Jeff Bezos as publicly as possible

@Wesley Yeah today
Like, oh I don't know, a non-case-sensitive SQL collation combined with a case sensitive comparator in the application causing the correct number of records to be returned but exactly 0 records to be processed by the application
And people sending me todo lists asking why certain things are overdue when in fact I did them weeks ago and even sent them an updated schedule just 2 days ago
And the guy on ebay that told me this MD1000 was going to come with a PERC 5/E and it only came with a SAS 5/E so now I need to find a fracking PERC in a hurry
I have loads of RAID controllers lying around in the office but none that have external connectors

Oh and that I found out this morning that because our UPSes are quite short, but the server underneat the UPS is quite long, if you slide the server back into the rack too quickly it yanks the IEC cords out of the UPS
Because they are, for some inexplicable reason, as loose as a goose
And I got a call from our cable suppliers this morning that they don't have a particular cable in stock and will part-ship me the order, but the one hting that's missing is the one cable that I actually need
The rest was just tacked on because it seemed a pity to waste a flat rate shipping fee
What else has gone wrong today? I think that's about it, and I've only been here for 2 hours

11:36 PM
@MarkHenderson On top of it all I've got huge family drama happening right now.

@Wesley uh oh

@Wesley Ohh well my wife's family drama sorted itself out thankfully
Jump onto gtalk if you wanna bitch about it

I almost did here, but I just don't want to air dirty laundry in Google searchable, and archivable areas. :P
And now that I said that, poof! =)

@Wesley you can't make everyone happy
you can, however, slip them MDMA

@Wesley Ugh families are the worst

11:40 PM
@MarkHenderson One of many reasons I don't want to get married. :P
That makes families multiply.

And the stress of someone dying usually spreads its wings to cover everything else
@Wesley yeah well it's better than being alone
Having somewhere warm to put your penis three or four times a year is nice too

@MarkHenderson I dunno about that. :P And you can still have friends, acquaintances, and hobbies. Just no one to bicker over carpet colors with.

@Wesley Puhlease. On all matters of home decor, there is no arguing. You let her decide and you just agree.
And if you got a good one, she will know not to choose rose petal bedsheets and pink doona covers

11:56 PM
@HopelessN00b eheh. I've been hitting over 50 closevotes a day for the past two days
At this rate, I should have our review queue cleared out in a few weeks, until we get more dumped on us

WOW so I just got an email from our ex-client who cancelled their contract with us, but cancelled it in an incredibly unprofessional manner, wanting to be all chummy
I wonder what he wants...

@MarkHenderson enjoy telling him you're booked solid

Enjoy telling him to pound sand into the orifice of his choosing.

@RyJones He hasn't asked for anything, yet

YET

11:58 PM
@Wesley He basically said "Thanks for letting me trick you into handing over your IP that we were not entitled to but wanted to take without paying a license fee"

@MarkHenderson Immediate forward to your boss?

@Wesley I dunno. My boss will get all emotional about it and rant and rave on about it
I don't need the ear blasting
