1:13 AM
I just finished writing a puppet module to manage chrony since I didn't like the other one. Let me know what you think.
Wow. Putting that on the puppet forge was a lot less painful than I was expecting.

Q: Database backup regardless of backup made through a control panel?

developerI know that all CMS or CMC platforms have some sort of walkthrough for their users to fully backup and restore the database or the whole website. While we all can perform such backups (and there are even plugins which automate the whole procedure) and restore them in necessity (such as when we mi...

Miss the point much?

I understand what he's asking. The backup process for the CMS we use is a PITA. I'm not sure what started you on the line of questioning about whether he can restore or not, tbh
Obviously it's only of value if it works. That's a tautology, so what's your point?

@TomW You might know this, but he doesn't seem to. Whichever method he picks, he's probably going to lose data and then blame us.

I don't think that follows. The responses seem to indicate that he has the same attitude as I do

If he did have that attitude, he would not have asked this question to begin with.
Nor would have have admitted that he has no idea if his backups work.

The implication is that he hasn't done any yet. It looks like a "If I were to..." question

4:51 PM
The qustion boils down to: Are these backup procedures fit for purpose? And that's something we can't answer. At least not without trying it ourselves.
And I have enough work to do without taking on someone else's work as well.

@MichaelHampton And I thought I can outsource all my sysadmin duties to you... :(

You can use my puppet modules, when I get around to publishing them :)

do they work on Windows?

@MichelZ Probably not

@MichaelHampton then I have no use for them unfortunately

5:04 PM
@MichelZ And I can't really do your job anyway if it's all Windows :)

@MichaelHampton And I thought linux people can do everything
:)

@MichelZ Yes, I can go wading in a swamp, but why would I want to?

'cause it's fun

You have a strange idea of "fun".

I am a strange man

Q: Scary islamic messages on mouse in LibreOffice - a virus?

yuviThis is weird. Today I opened an excel file with LibreOffice. Suddenly I saw the mouse changed color, and stuck to it was a message in Arabic, which changed every second in a loop. I can actually read Arabic so I immediately recognized it as Islamic messages praising Allah (including the Takbir)...

I wonder if I can install windows 7 on a poweredge and have it auto activate.

7:54 PM
@Hennes it probably doesn't have the OEM activation certificate for windows 7 in its bios.

Aye. I would be very surprised if it worked.
Nor do I want to run win7 on such a server
But i am curious
Right now I am just playing around. Writing down serial numbers, compile times with 2GiB and with 4GiB. With a siple 15K RPM SAS drive and with a SSD. etc etc
I already got surprised when doubling the memory from 2GiB to 4GiB did not influence compile times. Not even with make -j 16.
Not that getting the fastest kernel compile on an ancient OS (freeBSD 8.4 which was on a DVD which I had handy) is important. But trying to figure out what the limiting factor is is fun and potentially useful

@MichaelHampton the links point to your error10 account and 404 rather than your ringingliberty aacount

Right. DRAC 5 (W126) ordered via ebay. I managed to restrain myself and did not buy the fancy version with 4 additional Gbit ports.

8:02 PM
or they did at 5:30 am this moring

@Iain They shouldn't do now.

Clearly I did not drink enough 'Kanon' yet.

And woohoo, 13 downloads already!

@Hennes That's a bit small, no?

8:13 PM
The beer? The glass ?

@Hennes The image.

Aye.
I can link to a huge one if you want

@MichaelHampton I've been out cyclingg all day and just catching up with my incox

And I threw in Arch Linux support just because the only other chrony module only supported Arch, and was kind of crappy to boot.

@MichaelHampton I'll have a look at it properly when I get some time, not that I use chrony atm

8:23 PM
@Iain It's the default in RHEL 7, and it's a lot more flexible than ntpd for some situations, like running in VMs

8:33 PM
@MichaelHampton I have one system running it then put it's not puppet controlled yet - it's just a tester to have a look see and I haven't done much of hat really

@Iain Surprisingly it's over a decade old, I think the first version was in 2002

So my RAID array threw another URE during the rebuild over the weekend
On another new drive
Not just a warning but a full URE, so now I get to go and see if I can remap that sector to get the rebuilt done (and accept corrupted data)
Fuck this monday in particular

Hi, should I address questions regarding enterprise use and maintenance of an apple Xserve raid on serverfault or apple.se?

@hexafraction What kind of maintenance?
I don't know if we have any OSX server experts on SF
But RAID is a pretty common topic

@MarkHenderson Moving an entire array from an XServe raid with a failed controller to an identical chassis, with no documentation as to the layout or RAID type of the arrays in the chassis
@MarkHenderson If I ask on SF, could I get migration to Apple.SE? My first resort would be SF as I don't see much enterprise content on apple.SE

Yeah, that would be on topic here, though I don't know how much help you'll get

OK, thanks! I'll probably ask tomorrow when I'm on-site if I can't resolve it myself before then

Bob
11:49 PM
@MarkHenderson How new is it?

@Iain @Wesley (get a kayak, loser!) Weeeeee! I can bike on d water!!

@Bob Well, sorry "new" as in "not one of the failed ones from friday"
They have 20588 powered-on hours
So 2.35 years old
But they are out of warranty because they sat around for almost a year before I installed them
