@JourneymanGeek I obviously need to buy some dress clothes if I'm going to interview places - but shit, it's so hard to find stuff

@Cole: nice thing about asia is, in theory, there's still reasonably priced custom tailors ;p
(bad thing is, I'll probably not be very comfortable in a long sleeves and tie)

Also.. Fuck Yeah 20k!
3

@TomO'Connor Fuck yeah indeed. Hit it this week meself

Dan
I've just started eating the chewiest Wham bar in the world. I'm fucked if the phone goes

@DanilaLadner Did you mention me to jcape?
and ooooh....
God bless you, you don't know how much you are helped me, Thaaaaaaaanks man - take care , if there is any way to send me PM please do that, again thanks ewwhite — A.G 4 mins ago

3:05 PM
@TomO'Connor: enjoy the right to protect posts ;)

@JourneymanGeek Er.. yeahh..

oh wait, you're a mod. Enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling of... the number turning over to a bigger number ;p

basks in his snark farm

Oh no, at 20K you get to delete stuff.

@MichaelHampton And how was that different to a week ago? ;)

3:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek it'll cost me a butt ton of money

@Cole: yeah
@Cole: or I could always steal my dad's One Coat. The one that he has stashed away somewhere cause he hates it ;p
Engineers ;p

Healthcare client... "The software told me to add domain services to the system... then run dcpromo. Is that okay?"

Here's a thought. I think it would take me a considerably longer period of time, if I were starting from 1 rep, to get back to 20k, than it has this time around.

@TomO'Connor: quite probably true
and there's usually a point where it gets easier

@JourneymanGeek I'd probably get banned for snark quite early on.

3:09 PM
@MDMarra A client installed another domain controller by accident!!

Why does the client have domain admin rights to do so in the first place? @ewwhite

Seeing the Samsung Smart TV question makes me wonder if Ubuntu will ever release theirs.

@TomO'Connor: I tend to just pick folk who no one cares if I snark about on SU ;p

@Cole Healthcare.

...and?
I would assume they'd be even more restricted

3:11 PM
WmiPrvSE ... why is this eating up 100%?

@ewwhite BackupExec?

no, it's a VM

@ewwhite AV on the VM?
I've seen Symantec products do that (SEP/BackupExec)

nah

@ewwhite Process Monitor

3:16 PM
@TheCleaner client tried to turn this VM into a DC... and installed a bunch of weird programs on it.
he's the security auditor...
...

@ewwhite wat

:) I'm saying use Proc Mon to figure out what wmiprvse is doing

@ewwhite security people are stupid, never let them near any systems.

@DanilaLadner SO I see!

bqatever
Whoops, mis-spelled. Bqhatevwr

3:19 PM
@ewwhite Security Auditor (n) - def. = someone that runs 3rd party tools and scripts on your network regardless of impact and then says your systems are insecure but can't really explain why, just that the tools say so.

wow this is perfect definition.

A: How can I block outside mail FROM postmaster@mydomain.com?

Michael HamptonThe fact that someone can send you mail addressed to your own mail server's IP address has absolutely no bearing on whether the mail server is an open relay. Open relays accept mail for any and all systems outside their administrative domain and forward them onward. This clearly is not what's de...

@MichaelHampton ...did we get the date wrong twice?

3:31 PM
Looks like I'm planning a two-day-trip to Buenos Aires for work. Anyone ever been?

@voretaq7 Third time's the charm.

@DanilaLadner no it's not. I like "Someone who tells you your systems are insecure, then asks you to do things to make them less secure."

I may light everyone on fire.

@voretaq7 I love that question.
Bit of a crush on the OP, too.

Dan
3:33 PM
Didn't you take him for a drink?

Yeah, at least once.
Was supposed to meet him last night in Worcester, but i was feeling so tired, it didn't happen.

Dan
You shouldn't do that, everyone will expect a piece of the Tom

Serverfault dating.
@Dan You just want one.

Dan
@TomO'Connor I thought I'd better not change my avatar at first - I bet you're positively wet now

How would you handle this - tell manager our issue with Lotus Traveler is because we're using older AD and objectClass isn't indexed. Wants "proof" that Traveler does want use it for lookups to AD. Provide proof - pushes back and says "Ok, See if they can offer any more assistance on the searches until we get upgraded."
Then sends "Sounds like they will be releasing iPhones in the US in the next couple weeks. Need to do whatever it takes to get Traveler stable. Make sure this is one of your top priorities."

3:35 PM
@TomO'Connor is he hot? Put him in a box and ship him to me.

DUDE THE ONLY THING TO BE DONE IS TO UPGRADE AD

Dan
:(

I don't know what else to tell him.

Dan
What's the issue?

All the hot guys I know are not interested, already engaged to someone, or straight (and it's just creepy when the straight guy keeps asking for sex!)
@Cole . . . Index ObjectClass?

Dan
3:36 PM
I'd have thought a gay man screwing a straight man would be like a straight man screwing someone who claims to be a lesbian.

I.e. pretty hot

@Dan Cole's boss is an idiot. How can he give him the cyanide he needs?

@Dan Lotus products use the objectClass attribute to do lookups against AD for authentication. Prior to 2008, this attribute isn't indexed - Lotus products are also insanely LDAP heavy and killing our DC and causing Traveler to puke.

Dan
@Cole Ah, yes, well, you're fucked

@voretaq7 If I do that - then we'll be on NT4 and 2003 forever. They JUST implemented AD in 2007.

@Dan Yeah, it's fun when it's just a fling. When they keep trying to get in bed with you it's "Dude, come out of the fucking closet already, OK? You're at least bi so just fucking own up to it."

3:37 PM
@Cole Plan the AD upgrade, of course.

@Dan I think you're thinking of prison

@Cole I'm not even sure you can do that in AD

@MichaelHampton I agree - but he's pushing it off.

Dan
Have you considered a new DC, in its own site, JUST for this authentication?

@Dan yeah - we have one that has 12 vCPUs for just sametime

3:37 PM
@Dan . . . you take that back right now you filthy pervert :P

and it's pegged all day long.

Dan
@voretaq7 I'm a solution orientated guy :D
@Cole You have got to upgrade, dude

@Cole Not anymore. He just told you to make it one of your highest priorities!

@Dan Are you ex-army?
Uniform <3

@MichaelHampton he doesn't want to upgrade AD.

Dan
3:38 PM
@TomO'Connor Negative - that's from my run on the weekend

He wants to do everything to make it stable BUT upgrade AD.

@Dan At least my proposed terrible solution solves the problem :P

I just have no fucking clue how to get it through his head that this is the issue. Microsoft has documentation on it, IBM confirmed it - WHAT FUCKING MORE DO YOU WANT DUDE!?
Like I honestly have no fucking idea what to do.

Dan
@Cole Yeah, he sounds dense as lead

Well..xkcd nailed it today...kudos!

3:39 PM
@TheCleaner Indeed.

@TheCleaner the alt text should have been "And if you try to make me I will find you and kill you"

@voretaq7 Tourists?

@Cole So, he wants you to do something, then tells you you can't actually do it. Go over his head.

Dan
@MichaelHampton I think he should remove his head

@Dan nothing in there apparently.

3:40 PM
@Cole Write up the information from IBM and MS in the form of a report. Send it to him, CC his boss. Include the AD migration plan (as the approved solution from both vendors) as an appendix.
and update your resume.
@mfinni what about them?

Already update resume - phone interview at 12 today.

Dan
But honestly, @Cole, there comes a point where you just HAVE to say "No, I'm sorry - but I don't know of any realistic way we can engineer around this problem without upgrading our domain"

@Dan over, through, what's the difference?

@voretaq7 Just wondering if that would be the appropriate label for the putatively-straight guy you were describing

Dan
@voretaq7 Good point, it's just semantics at this point

3:41 PM
@Dan tried that too. I give up.

Dan
@mfinni Gay.
2

I'm just going to let it blow up.

@mfinni "insecure closet case who isn't bad in the sack"
@Dan gheyyyyyyyyyyy

And say "here's all the times I warned you that this would happen" when it blows up.

@Dan I'm going to have a tough time explaining why I'm laughing at work. Thanks guys

3:42 PM
@Cole Do the report to boss-of-boss thing first
otherwise you're the scapegoat, not the prescient sysadmin

@voretaq7 he's out for the next few weeks.

@Cole that's OK, email will still be there when he gets back

and...he's the one who didn't even want to go to AD in the first place.
So.....yeah.

or if he has a secretary brief the secretary
ah
yeah, time to quit

Dan
Does being on NT help you guys at all?

3:43 PM
They've all worked together for 15-20 years - so I'm just going to get dinged

Dan
I mean, is the migration path that bad?

your job sucks more than mine dude

@Dan no - just laziness.

Dan
Thought so :(

Well and the Guest account

3:43 PM
@Dan Yes. It's terribad. There are snakes and grues and wolves!

which they're going to enable on the AD domain.

Dan
@voretaq7 We're going to need a bigger server.

@Cole JESUS KITTEN CLOBBERING CHRIST NO! MICROSOFT SAYS NO!

/headdesk
@voretaq7 I know

@voretaq7 Easily done, change searchFlags for Object-Class in the schema from 0x8 to 0x9

3:44 PM
STEVE-O MOTHERFUCKING BALLMER SAYS NO AND HE BOUGHT *NOKIA :P
@MathiasR.Jessen . . . that's delightfully arcane compared to OpenLDAP

@voretaq7 as you can see.........this place sucks.

but good to know and filed away in the back of my brain with other AD Dementations

@voretaq7 people don't enable Guest on AD...that's just bad security. Instead, create a generic AD account with the password the same as the account name and grant it various rights all over the place. :)

Dan
What would happen if the NT4.0 servers suffered a.........failure?

@TheCleaner Indeed.

3:45 PM
@TheCleaner then we would have to figure out WHO'S using the acocunt - which they have no idea
*account

@Dan Stop trying to break AD's legs!

which is scattered across 80+ sites

@voretaq7 Although it only works in AD, his NT4 domains would still be fucked

@Dan they're VMs

@MathiasR.Jessen It's NT4. it's already fucked.
Windows NT - No Testicles.

Dan
3:46 PM
@Cole format c:\

@voretaq7 Good point

@Dan I've thought about it - but then I'd just have to fixed it OR they'd recover from backup
and by they - I mean they'd make me do it

Dan
I just wanted to point out that I was still in Primary school when NT4.0 came out

I'm a big fan of No Testicles 6.1

Dan
I mean, jesus christ

3:47 PM
@Dan I point that out every time it's brought up

@MathiasR.Jessen ...now even more neutered! :-)

"Just so you know, I was 7"

@Dan Jesus can't help you here. This is NT4
4

@Dan NT 4.0 came out the week before I started preschool

@Cole nah...it's a generic account. It doesn't matter who uses it. Justification and security logging be damned. THEY CAN TAKE OUR RIGHTS BUT THEY'LL NEVER TAKE....OUR FREEDOM!!!!

3:48 PM
@TheCleaner no I know - but we don't know WHO'S using guest

@Cole Guests.

So we have no way to give them a username and password and it's hundreds of people

It's people within the company.

Dan
Can't you give them real accounts?

3:48 PM
@Dan we don't know who they are!

@Cole Ex-Employees coming in to do work. They're guests. The best kind, like the ones who wash dishes for you after dinner no matter how much you say not to and you'll do it later.

I'm off to my phone screen - bbiab.
before I curb stomp my manager

Dan
Don't mention the NT4.0
If you have to mention that you're still working with NT4.0, you should mitigate it by explaining how you once tried to gas your manager.

@Cole get that upgrade going before somebody demonstrates how haikiri works

There should be an autoscript that forces a single upvote from an OP when they accept your answer.

Dan
3:51 PM
I agree

@TheCleaner Agreed

Dan
Although I think there should be a lot of scripts that force a lot of things from a lot of OP's
Suicide being one

Instant admission to lunatic assylums ranks pretty high too

Dan
Having "Developer" tattoo'd onto their forehead

@Dan "sweet Dan answered my question and that works perfectly! No need to go back to SF and accept it...I've got crap to do...." 15 minutes later OP is doubled over on toilet.

3:55 PM
Go home Access, you're drunk.

Dan
@TheCleaner I'd prefer "on the floor in a pool of blood"
Right, home time - laters ladies!

@TheCleaner Make a request on mSO

@voretaq7 OK, but I'm prepared to get crapped on by those guys

@TheCleaner probably

Q: Accepting answer without upvoting?

dbrIs there ever a case where you would want to accept an answer, but not upvote it? I can't think of a single situation where this would be the case.. So would it not make sense to have the "Accept" button upvote the question too?

If the up-vote is automatic based on acceptance, then for those rare situations where you want to show the correct answer but not reward the user for other reasons, you could always un-do the up-vote manually (in other words, the up-vote would happen, the user would be told the up-vote happened, but it is not set in stone - though I'm not sure if SO would need to keep track of the auto-up-vote for the situation where the user later decided to un-accept that answer and accept a different answer - that's about the only technical limitation I foresee). — Aaron Bertrand Aug 4 '11 at 15:18
and

4:21 PM
@TheCleaner see, so you don't need to get crapped on cuz someone already did :P

@TheCleaner That would make the "Unsung hero" badge unobtainable lol
since it requires "0 score accepted answers"

@NathanC that's a st00pid badge :P

@ewwhite - it's raining HP questions up in here: serverfault.com/questions/538755/…
Serverfault main site down?

@TheCleaner Looks OK to me.

yeah came back this time. Was timing out for about 15 secs but other sites were fine.

4:30 PM
@TheCleaner, it was being flaky for me for about a minute

OK, good to know

mrr?

sup gents

Oh Comcrap, why do you tease me?

4:46 PM
Phantom Vibration Syndrome or Phantom ringing is the sensation and false belief that one can feel one's mobile phone vibrating or hear it ringing, when in fact the telephone is not doing so. Other terms for this concept include ringxiety (a portmanteau of ring and anxiety), HypoVibroChondria (a mix of Hypochondria and Vibro) and fauxcellarm (a play on "false alarm"). Phantom ringing may be experienced while taking a shower, watching television, or using a noisy device. Humans are particularly sensitive to auditory tones between 1,000 and 6,000 hertz, and basic mobile phone ringers often f...

5:00 PM
oh sharepoint, why do you hate me

@MattBear because sharepoint.
@MattBear hypovibrochondria sounds like some kind of sex toy.

@voretaq7 lol

@MichaelHampton everyone get together in a bunker, and bring your chainsaws?

@MichaelHampton Stolen.

5:07 PM
Of course.

I'm going to see Insidious 2 tonight...:D
Friday the 13th or not lol

so my wife found a baby rattlesnake in the driveway last night

@MattBear ADORBS! Adopt it and raise it as your very own. Teach it to bite the letter carrier.

well, to be more precise the cats found it, and the wife went to investigate what the cats were messing with
and my wife went running down the drive way, and flew into the bed of my truck
somehow...
the cats had already chewed the tail off, i just popped its head off and threw it in the trash can

@mdmarra are you around?

5:13 PM
@ewwhite no, he's asquare

@ewwhite sup

Call my cell

sorry, not available for a call until later

I need advice!!
Oh, working for real?

I'm on a call until 2 and then I have DR testing for a client :(

5:14 PM
Well, my team is objecting to my use of SDHC cards in VMware ESXi hosts.
And explaining this stuff is getting tiresome.
Maybe I'm not diplomatic enough.

@MathiasR.Jessen Dude I've been pushing for it for almost 10 months now. Keep getting told no.

@ewwhite Diplomacy doesn't mean much when the people you're talking to aren't using logic but instead responding emotionally.

Interview on Tuesday after my phone screen I had at noon.

@TheCleaner There's a badge for getting n accepted questions with no upvotes.
Your proposal would require deleting that badge.

@ewwhite you need VMware advice from me?
You really are in dire straights

5:21 PM
So... the iPhone 5C. Does the C stand for crap?

@ewwhite Diplomacy has failed

@MichaelHampton color
or crap

@ewwhite aggressive negotiations, with a clue by four!

Yo, I love when payday is on a sunday so I get paid on a Friday instead

@MDMarra I loved working at places on a bi-weekly pay cycle instead of semi-monthly.
Those months where you got 3 paychecks were awesome.

5:23 PM
@Magellan It doesn't matter that much, does it?
You have income, expenses, etc
all else equal it's the same shit every month

Blah
Boss took off at noon.

@JoelESalas Do your budgets based on 2 paychecks. And 2-3x per year you have an extra couple thousand to pay down debt, put in the vacation fund or buy motorcycles.

@Magellan lol budget

@Magellan we just switched to bi-weekly.. I prefer semi monthly

I pay double car payments, pay off credit card, put the rest into VGENX and suck it up if there's something I want

5:25 PM
@JoelESalas You laugh, as I would have a year ago. Just wait until you marry 40k in student loans

@MDMarra fuck that bitch

@JoelESalas we have children, a mortgage, 6 vehicles, and I have child support. There is a budget. =)

HNNNG

SIX vehicles?
S-I-X

@MDMarra one for every day of the week

5:25 PM
@JoelESalas well yeah, thats why you marry them!

ESS-EYE-EX

except the sabbath

@MDMarra 3 motorcycles. 1 shop truck, 1 classic car, and 1 family sedan for hauling kids around.

@Magellan that's not 6, that's 2

If you're having cash flow problems, I feel bad for you son. You got 99 problems and your motorcycle addiction might be one.
2

5:27 PM
@MDMarra Is that counting bicycles?

@mfinni If your bikes are expensive enough

My neighbor has 3 motorcycles, 11 mopeds, 1 car, and 1 creeper/rescue van.

Fucking seattlians
what do you call them
seattleites?
seattopians?

@JoelESalas No, we're making up for the regular Seattleites. Most of them own one car that only moves every 2 weeks to make sure that the moss and algae isn't getting too thick.

@JoelESalas its spelled "D-O-U-C-H-E-B-A-G-S"

5:28 PM
@Magellan Is the Seattle Chill a real thing
People seemed perfectly friendly in bellevue and other lands
actually no they looked at me funny

@JoelESalas Maybe? I associate mostly with people from the East Coast.

but I'm weird so that happens everywhere I go

My neighbor grew up here was born on long island and lived there for a few years after high school.

@Magellan On public transport: would you rather pay a fare proportional to the distance you traveled, or a flat fare regardless of the distance?

Well, this is cool. Guy to do the phone screen just had a Sev1 pop-up so he called me about 5 minutes in advance to reschedule for later. Very considerate.

5:30 PM
Also you can empathize with why he wants to leave

@JoelESalas I've done both. It evens out considering that the people WAY out there don't get jack squat for bus service.

@Magellan As a personal philosophical choice though?

Considering that the actual operating cost of a bus passenger is roughly $10 a head, I'm not sure it matters. They'd rather take the lower amount and get more money in the door than force poor people that have to live 30 miles out to pay even more.

@Magellan YOU'RE NO EAST COAST PERSON!
all east coast people are like "pay proportional to the ride"

Because once you get out there, nobody rides the bus unless they 1) really have a pressing need or 2) they can't afford downtown parking.

5:33 PM
all west coast people are like "flat fare"

@JoelESalas I've been here 15 years, and grew up in the more rural parts of Upstate NY and MI.
I also worked in Social Service IT for 9 years.
@JoelESalas I used to think 'proportional'. And the commuter rail does work that way. But the proportional thing was so that the suburbs could get some damn bus service instead of once every 60 minutes and only during rush hour.

@Magellan Suburbs are a shitty place to live, I feel for anyone that's forced to live there
tbh I've engineered my life to never live in the suburbs again

@JoelESalas Suburbs aren't bad
@JoelESalas and if you come to NY you'll find that we're mainly in favor of flat fare

I'm using PowerShell to do some FTP stuff. The username is foo@example.com, but it's sending example.com\foo to the FTP server, which it doesn't like. FTP is using PSCredential and I'm not sure if that's what's trying to change the username. Anyone have any ideas?

I almost didn't come back to work after lunch.

5:42 PM
@Tanner . . . .

@voretaq7 issat bad? lol

"I'm using PowerShell to do some FTP stuff" - - - "I'm using cut crystal champagne flutes to serve PBR at my party"

@voretaq7 Well, my options are to automate it or transfer stuff every 30 minutes by hand...

@Tanner ...fine but MUST you use FTP? Filthy beast!

@JoelESalas That was me in a former life with a former wife. Rid of both of them for the most part. Glad to be starting over with someone that's not a complete narcissist.

5:44 PM
@Tanner why FTP?
"Fucking Terrible Protocol"

@voretaq7 Yes. :( Must be FTP...
Not my choice. Wasn't the other company's choice either. But that's what we asked for......

I have absolutely zero motivation to do anything for the next ~3 hours

@MDMarra Yeah, I need a sanity check.

@Tanner So it wasn't your choice, but it was (effectively) your fault? =)

@Cole You went through VMware training, right?
Did they talk about USB boot?

5:52 PM
@ewwhite not in depth.

@Tanner YOUR COMPANY IS BAD AND ALL OF YOUR TECHNICAL EMPLOYEES SHOULD FEEL BAD! :-P
3

@Cole But I can't be the only one who advocates it.

@Tanner but in answer to your original question, I think PSCredential is Domain\User format
you would have to "adjust" the username you send manually I think

@voretaq7 Documentation tends to agree. It's meant to be a secure way of handling MS credentials

@ewwhite I've only done USB boot for small companies with standalone ESXi servers.

5:54 PM
For FTP, the username is just a text string

@mfinni yeah - internally it's some special structure, but when it gets .toString'd or equivalent it is always Domain\User

@voretaq7 Yupper

so @Tanner you could just take the string form, do terrible things to it with regexes, and then send the mangled string to the FTP server. It won't know the difference

@Cole not for SAN?

@voretaq7 So, if the FTP server in question was IIS, and was in/trusted the domain inside the PSCredential, you'd be good.

5:55 PM

@Tanner Er, above comment was for you

@mfinni I'm....not sure
I think the IIS FTP server is Kerberized, and I'd assume the PS stuff can do Kerberos

@ewwhite Never.

so it'd probably do that

arrrg

5:57 PM
@ewwhite TLAPD is still like 6 days away.

@mfinni @voretaq7 Ahhh, that's making sense. I suppose I'll need to modify the PowerShell module for FTP that I found... Thanks.
@Magellan That's how it tends to go, yes. (:

@Tanner - why not use winscp to schedule the transfer?
