8:00 PM
Well, Rémy Card probably could.

Man, MDT is great since you can customize the shit out it :)
Man, MDT is confusing :(

@WesleyDavid Don't forget about blocks, inodes, block pointers, indirect block pointers and doubly-indirect block pointers.

Never fails to amuse me when I get calls from contractors for positions that I've not only applied to but interviewed for and know were filled by someone else.

8:23 PM
@Adrian Clearly not a recruiter the employer is working with, then.
they do that- they'll search the internet for postings, send resumes to them, and try to bill the employer.

@FalconMomot yeah. I've gotten to the point that I usually do not bother talking to recruiters anymore except for the one that I'm with now. These guys are a boutique firm and they take good care of their people and their customers.

Yeah, the one job I got from a random agency was billing my services out for over twice what I was getting paid for them.

@Goatmale SD card in a USB reader has the same effect.

@FalconMomot I don't really care what they're billing for my time, as long as I'm getting paid well and they don't screw over the customers either.

@FalconMomot Hmm... I thought most recruitment firms give you about a third of what they charge.

8:28 PM
@WesleyDavid it was only slightly better than that.

Most places I've talked to would have paid me between $30 and $50 per hour, with some as low as $25 or so and others closer to $55. I would be willing to bet that they would have been hiring me out for $125 to $150 an hour.
So the short story: companies should just hire me direct at $100 an hour and cut out the middle man. =)

but when I think of the fact that they are doing nothing, and someone is willing to pay for what I am doing three times over... all I can think of is that there is no proper reason that money isn't mine.

@tombull89 my dog prefers the cookies to be broken before she'll eat them

@FalconMomot Mine provided benefits, vacation, sick pay, etc.

@FalconMomot The biggest advantage is that the recruitment firm is a safety and liability buffer. Also, a talent buffer to hopefully outsource the HR nonsense of finding people that are clueful.
I actually get the need for recruitment firms, I just don't see recruitment firms actually doing it right and making it worthwhile for the companies that contract them and the contractors that work for them.

8:31 PM
@WesleyDavid It's all in the business relationship. My current agency only sends one or two people that are a nearly perfect fit.

Ha! Here, the standard thing is that you incorporate, and then contract under those people, who provide no benefits, sick time, or vacation; you are responsible for the business tax and paperwork, and even usually insurance

@Adrian Pay me $150 an hour and I can provide my own benefits, vacation, sick pay, etc. That's why contractors have to charge so much. (As you know; not telling you this, just venting)
@FalconMomot I thought Canada had less suckage than that.

@WesleyDavid Doing your own taxes. Not eligible for unemployment. Doing your own marketing. PAYING more in taxes.

@WesleyDavid it might just be a Calgary thing. You can, however, go into business properly or work for someone outside of that (as I am doing)

@Adrian If I could find a place that paid $75 an hour consistently and offered a goodly amount of open hours, I'd do it.

8:32 PM
oh, yeah, that's what I was forgetting- until very recently, this type of IT contractor couldn't claim EI, and also the government reformed taxes so we'd all have to pay double what anyone else would if they were an employee

I've got people offering prices all over the map.

@WesleyDavid And frankly, you'd still be earning less than I was with my full-time-plus contract gig this past winter.

@Adrian Yeah. If I got a theoretical 40 hours billable time in a month at $75 an hour, that would be $12,000 cash. Chip away taxes, liability insurance, health insurance, some saved for a training budget... now my take-home is maybe $4000
Not cool.

@WesleyDavid Bingo.

@Adrian And then I didn't mention my own savings plan, retirement...

8:35 PM
I more than doubled my salary by getting away from the contracting racket.

@WesleyDavid Don't forget to budget in a special "new bicycle every year" savings plan...

So, and I'm not joking, one of my "plans" is a percentage ownership in a business that might have a good shot at being acquired. I've put in hundreds of free hours for it and own 10%. The plan is to sell in two to four years. That could help me, but that's a pretty shitty savings, retirement, and growth plan.
@FalconMomot I know, I just have this bad own-your-own-business hereditary disease.
Except I did not inherit the "successful at your own business" gene like my forefathers.
I suck.

@WesleyDavid it's good to do on the side. I'm working on a bit of something also.
but like
even in this sector (especially?), starting a business from scratch has a massive failure rate; it's way over half
85% even

@FalconMomot Oh yeah, the vast majority of businesses close their doors in five years. Like, 90% I think.

I'm not even talking 5 years

8:37 PM
@WesleyDavid I have a plan like that... a very small %age of a company that - if it makes it big - will be huuuuuuuuuuuuuge

Half in one year, half of the half in two, almost all in five.

sounds about right.
it's good to make it your secondary thing.

@Ward Yeahhhh, I think for me it could translate into... an okay amount. Not huge by any means. Half million if I'm lucky. =/

That is not an insignificant amount of money.

@FalconMomot Cut out half for taxes as a single childless person with no house payments.

8:38 PM
@WesleyDavid those are some high taxes.

250k, for maybe a thousand hours of work? Suddenly I think I'm getting a bad deal. That business better get bought for fifty million. =P

let's see what I would pay on that here

@FalconMomot You get reamed if you're single or filing separately, and have no dependents. I don't have much to deduct except business expenses, so sometimes it's a matter of "spend it or lose it"

@WesleyDavid even in that exact position here in Alberta, the effective personal income tax payable on that windfall would be only about 15%

So if I theoretically got a wad of cash like that, at the end of the year I might buy a few ten grand of training credits at RedHat or Juniper as a investment just to give it to something worthwhile rather than write a check to Uncle Sam so he can buy more monitoring nodes for the NSA
Maybe I'd finally be able to afford VMware licensing CAN WE TALK ABOUT VMWARE LICENSING FOR A BIT?

8:42 PM
ye gods
"need more than 3 servers or 5 physical CPUs? you're screwed."

VMWare licensing... ouch

@FalconMomot More likely... CRA will find a way to call it income and take 75%

@FalconMomot Plus, you can't spin up VMs that customers touch, even if it's just a service running on the VM that an external client / customer would touch. Need a transient FTP server? Want to make a virtual server for a client to drop his VOIP PBX on? NOPE. Gotta be in the VSPP program.

@Ward you have to make it capital gains and dividends, which is what it is (and in that case, it's still income, but the ETR is very low thanks to some reforms made in 2011)

@Ward Yeah, that's the thing with me, it wouldn't be a windfall, it would be considered income.

8:44 PM
@WesleyDavid huh, someone I've worked for in the past violates that daily.

I don't mind the concept of taxes, but let's apply taxation fairly across individuals and businesses, and also spend it decently, not be led by the nose in front of Monsanto and Cargill while the NSA pisses away shipping cartons of cash on fiber optic duplicators.

I'd like to see it flattened out somewhat
so there aren't tax traps

I do tend to mind the idea of major reaming taxation like what I perceive Sweden to have. @pauska Thoughts on your taxation system?

@WesleyDavid In my case, I just bought some stock, so when the company becomes a trillion-dollar energy supplier, tiny my %age will be capital gains.

@WesleyDavid Stop bitchin'

8:46 PM
@ewwhite Vmware sucks.

/dev/shm = rand(0, $total_ram)
Hmm...

@Ward I'm pretty sure that if you start a company and sell it, the tax consequences are the same as for common stock, except better as the stock will be in a CCPC

@WesleyDavid Become an accredited education institution. We get it much cheaper.

HK has it right - basically 15% for everyone.

Xen + Supermicro + WD Green SATA 3TB drives #3hawt5u

8:46 PM
@Ward that they do.

@FalconMomot No dicking around endlessly in QuickTax ...

I'd like to see a very simple tax code like this: 20% of all the money you bring in, less $2400 (just in case you're poor)
I don't really want to have so many pieces of paper in my taxes that I feel like I should bind it in a book, only to have most of those papers come to net $0

@FalconMomot Damned crazy libertarians

heh
I'm also not convinced the CRA has a legal mandate to collect some of the information they collect. Why should I have to itemize things like partnership and farming income separately?

ANyone here know Oracle?

8:51 PM
@ewwhite which of oracle's 9000 products is troubling you?

@FalconMomot They look at so little of that stuff... I've put down intentional gibberish a few times. Or one time when I was behind and had a few simple returns to do, I did them all with the same year's verison of QTax and let CRA sort it out.

@Ward when they retroactively amend the tax code and send me a bill anyway, I really don't see the point of doing it right ;)

@ewwhite Like this:
My fave RevCan story: my wife goes in to sort out her GST payments, spends a long time with a guy who ends up saying "all you need is this guide, it's all in there." She asks how to get one, they go down the hall to another department and the guy there says "Oh, that guide is completely out of date and wrong, you can't use that..."

I had a minor dispute with them in 2007... they only sent me a letter with their decision regarding it about a month ago

@ewwhite I sorta know Oracle. Depends which bits. Also, I hate it.

9:00 PM

@freiheit well... I have an application... where ORacle requires /dev/shm
192GB of RAM... but /etc/fstab looks like:
shmfs                   /dev/shm                tmpfs   size=166912m     0 0

@ewwhite Hmmm... I don't touch /dev/shm directly, I muck with kernel.shmmax, kernel.shmall and kernel.shmmni in /etc/sysctl.conf

Would it be WRONG of me to edit this guy's post?

Q: Proper way to connect Cisco Small Business Switches?

exabrialFirst time network engineer here. I don't have a large budget, so I need to learn all of the skills necessary without pulling in a bunch of vendors. I'm charged with building out a 350port network in a new location. I planned on using a few gigabit switches from cisco small business. I noticed n...

"First time network engineer here"

so @freiheit The DBA says that oRacle wants to use ALL THE RAM
and manage memory itself, versus the kernel

@ewwhite so you're using all but 25GB or so of your RAM for tmpfs

9:02 PM
I am a little offended that he uses the title "engineer" in that question... :D

@ewwhite That's close enough to right, yes

Oshi we got a P.Eng. here!

@freiheit So the result is:

brace for a lecture about the use of the word "engineer" and possibly some ranting about statics.

oops...
more like...

9:03 PM
@ewwhite All the RAM should include none of the swap

@FalconMomot no...I'm not...I was a network engineer (now IT Manager)...not a P.Eng...but the guy calls himself a Network Engineer and he's never even hooked up basic SMB switches (and if you look at a previous rant of mine in Meta I have no issue with the term "network engineer - meta.serverfault.com/questions/5340/…)

@TheCleaner aah, much better. sigh of relief ;)

so swap just sat at 100%

@ewwhite That appears to be using TOO MUCH OF THE RAM
You need to stop at 100%
Maybe even play it a little safe and stop at 95%

9:05 PM
that's SWAP used

@FalconMomot :) Updated my reply further... :)

so the issue at that time was 96GB RAM and 92GB of /dev/shm

@ewwhite Yeah. SWAP being used is using more than 100% of the RAM.

and I've just never heard of anyone doing this.
so we doubled server RAM to 192GB

@ewwhite Well, I'm setting kernel.shmmax to half the physical RAM

9:06 PM
but client asked for doubling of /dev/shm
@freiheit that's the default
this client wants MOAR

@ewwhite Well, I believe you need to keep /dev/shm under the physical RAM size, otherwise you have no RAM left for anything else

it is under the phys RAM size
just by a little

@ewwhite Apparently "a little" isn't enough for anything else to have room to work in...

@ewwhite tmpfs which is generally what /dev/shm does the equivalent of sparse allocation. Only what's actually on the file system takes up space.

right. was sitting at ~73GB of /dev/shm

9:09 PM
@ewwhite wtf

@84104 Just assume that the Oracle DBA will set Oracle to use ALL THE SHM

it's just weird. I found an oracle reference that says how to deal with this

I tried the internet. I have added the printer drivers to the Citrix server to match exactly what is on the user PC. Thinking is that it will pick up the printer. No errors, just not seeing the printer. — Michael 31 mins ago
so... I know NOTHING about Citrix
but this doesn't seem logical to me.

@freiheit Don't most DBs have better ways of dealing with RAM directly rather than the (minor) penalty of FS abstraction?

$user has a printer connected to their PC (by say a USB cable)
I add the print driver to a server miles away

9:11 PM
Oracle can use huge pages...

why can't the server print to $user's PC

but it's incompatible with another ORacle feature we need...

@freiheit s/Oracle//
@ewwhite HOORAY INTERNAL INCONSISTENCY

so we're using Oracle Automatic Memory Management... oracle-base.com/articles/11g/…
why does it seem like they reinvent the wheel?

@voretaq7 Not sure. Seems like a valid question. It might be dead obvious to someone who actually deals with these things.

9:13 PM
@ewwhite They told me they invented the original wheel and nobody else has managed to improve on it the way they have

Probably a connection setting like "allow access to local resources". That's what it is for Windows RDP.

I'm going to take a stab at this incompetent network engineer question...

@84104 My Oracle box isn't even (apparently) using anything in /dev/shm, it's all stuff I have to use ipcs -m to see.

@FalconMomot Go for the root cause. Just take a stab at the incompetent network engineer.

@WesleyDavid s/take a //; s/at //;

9:15 PM
@84104 Well my guess is "The fucking server can't connect to a printer on your local machine you idiot"

Nah, I think dude can't google.
Of course he may be running some other Citrix thing that isn't that, but hey, it's his fault for not providing enough information. Also for not using google.

well if someone else wants to help him out feel free

@voretaq7 Question's closed.

my nice ends at "knowing more than 'it's a computer' might help us troubleshoot"

@freiheit Is it stabby Tuesday yet?

9:20 PM
@84104 the loss to humanity is incalculable. (something about "division by zero")
@WesleyDavid Every Day Is Stabby Tuesday.

If I squint, "Thursday" looks like "Tuesday"

@voretaq7 I'm willing to go so far as throwing documentation.

@voretaq7 STAB STAB STAB

@WesleyDavid I believe today is Shanky Thursday

Oh well, into the comment it goes.

9:21 PM
@freiheit No no no it's Fuck Off Friday

@freiheit How about Light Your Head On Fire *day.

I just found this at work...
In snmpd.conf - rocommunity disabled 172.16.0.0/12

@ewwhite . . . they know that doesn't disable it, right?

@ewwhite That's an interesting community string name choice...

9:23 PM
Every played a game and got so into it that when you stop you're just SUPER HYPER!!!!?!?!

right?

@Chopper3 Quake?

BF3

@Chopper3 . . . Quake? :-)
(shut up, I'm old!)

oh I see, sorry

9:23 PM
:cradles Wolfenstein disks:

@voretaq7 how confusing

new version coming

@Chopper3 Hungry Hungry Hippos. Every damn time.

yeah, I can image so

I want to cry again.

9:25 PM
@ewwhite Show us where the bad man touched you.

@ewwhite Here. Have a star. And a drink (that you'll have to provide yourself)

@84104 The bad man used an SNMP ro community named "disabled" for a few thousand devices.

@ewwhite those 12-core+HT Xeons are out in Sept :)

@MarkHenderson The waiting game is BORING!

@Chopper3 I don't want more cores!

9:26 PM
@ewwhite Sounds legit.

also if anyone wants to RUIN THEIR CHILDHOOD someone made a Hungry Hungry Hippos web game
dunno if it's Flash or Java but it's slow and it sucks :(

@84104 that's weird, right?

@ewwhite Hey, at least there's no SSNs involved... right?

@ewwhite I need to buy quite a lot of blades in the next few months, was going for the 8 cores - might hold off

@freiheit ...they're in the process table, we pass them as command line parameters dontchya kno...

9:28 PM
@voretaq7 At least my giant store of SSNs is pictures of SSNs that you'd have to spend tens or even hundreds of milliseconds OCRing into usable SSNs.

@Chopper3 One of my old trading firms recently dismantled the trading setup I built in 2009 for NYSE... They had it shipped back to Chicago.

@freiheit . . . .
I.... I don't even.

23 hours ago, by freiheit
@voretaq7 Unpatcheable OS, unpatcheable tomcat, unpatched java, app that can't be updated, and even when the app does get updated the vendor has to remote in to do it... oh yeah, and we have a job that deletes tomcat's logs hourly because the app sometimes logs user passwords in plaintext, depending on the configuration of the desktop app. Did I mention that it's chock full of SSNs and other such sensitive information?

I think the blade chassis was shipped whole, with all servers inserted... wrapped in a garbage bag.

@ewwhite So we should expect to see a bunch of HP surplus blades on ebay soon?
"As is, not tested, YMMV, standard disclaimers apply, no returns"

9:32 PM
Makes me sad

@ewwhite At first I'm thinking "oh, hey, I recognize that chassis. We had two and are halfway to retiring the second one", then .... I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to look like that...

@freiheit I figured that would be text based
but still.... I don't even.
do you use the SSNs as captchyas?

@ewwhite nice

@voretaq7 On the other hand, I finally picked up my bottle of Bruichladdich 10 and bottle of Port Charlotte 10, so at least i have something nice to comfort myself with...

In the warm weather we've been having jugs of Pimms have be been refreshing

9:37 PM
@freiheit hmm, I'm not drunk. this must be remedied.

Too peaty for me

@freiheit Yeah, I'm just going to settle for some laphroaig. Clearly we have similar taste in scotch.
@Iain I was wondering what you were trying to say there for a moment.
I have some of the quarter cask stuff... so good

@FalconMomot If you like peat, try Octomore sometime. wow

I don't think I have seen that anywhere, but I'll try and find some perhaps
I should visit scotland someday.

9:41 PM
@FalconMomot I'm using a mobile device and chat isn't easy ...

@Iain it's so tough trying to find a decent device with a real keyboard now.

@ewwhite Yes, and wrong.

Lol, this got a reopen vote:

Q: Printing locally from Citrix

MichaelI am trying to get users at home using Citrix to print to their local printers through the application. How would be the best way to go about this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@84104 @ewwhite It's HIGHLY SECURE (who the fuck would think someone would be stupid enough to use "disabled" as a community string?)

see? I do think some stuff should be closed.

9:44 PM
@FalconMomot close ALL the things!
2

@voretaq7 Or use "guest" for the administrator account.

@84104 The password is blank.

@voretaq7 Hey, at least there are no blank passwords on my server full of SSN pictures!

@FalconMomot That would be me. I wanted to throw the documentation at him in long format. I settled for a comment link.

9:47 PM
@voretaq7 sadly that's not as bad as it sounds

@FalconMomot Doesn't Windows > XP use GPT with incident?

@84104 Why would you vote reopen for that? There is 0 research effort on the part of the asker.
@84104 It can. I forget if it does it by default, but, see my comment.
Alas, this kind of constraint isn't one that would exist in a professional environment, and that's what makes it off topic. — Falcon Momot 2 mins ago

@Iain more sensibleby the day

@FalconMomot I plead the fifth.

@84104 of bourbon?

9:50 PM
@voretaq7 that is the best plea. Get the judge drunk.

@FalconMomot My luck I'd get a Mormon judge or something and get sentenced to cultural sensitivity training instead.
Real Question: How much coffee do the Supreme Court justices drink in a day?
I imagine they just roll up a tanker truck of hot black liquid judicial opinions to the back of the court building

@voretaq7 That just means you have to offer the fifth in a way that no other mormons will know about it.
sigh I wish I could be a judge. it would be so much fun, despite the tedium.

@FalconMomot that guy had the best comeback sentence ever!
"I tried the internet." serverfault.com/questions/517245/… that is so awesome...lol

@FalconMomot ""Parked across two space? DEATH!"

@WesleyDavid but a $0.50 fine for smuggling weed, graffiti, arson, and rioting.

Can you still buy 'Kraft Dinner' in the US or Canada?

@voretaq7 He sent echo request, but no reply came.

@voretaq7 I hear you can overdose on just one internet if it's laced.

@84104 ICMP:Communication Prohibited by Filter
(Host reachable, it just hates you.)

9:56 PM

@voretaq7 yeah :( just before I stepped down there was some discussion in dmz about direction etc and jaydles suggested a hangout to discuss some concerns SE have - did it ever happen ?

@Iain not to my knowledge -- if the mass fragmentation keeps happening though it won't be necessary
(we'll reach a zero point in traffic and just shut down)

Q: VPNC Front End and Windows 7

karlochaconI've been searching the way to have connect to two VPNs at the same time so I don't have to be switching from one to another all day I tried using VPNC Front End in Windows 7 x64 but no go. Anyone has tried any other software or maybe any of you was successful using VPNC Front End thanks a lot

tabarnac

@ewwhite I worked at the NYSE in 1996 for 6 months, small world

@Chopper3 yes

9:58 PM
Thanks, want a pack or two as part of a joke

@voretaq7 there is more fragmentation ?

@Iain Network Engineering, there are at least 2-3 Virtualization & Cloud Computing variants on A51...

heh, after struggling with the bootable usb pen that deleted its own partitions, I made another one to boot the MDT installer
been digging through logs for 4 hours

@Chopper3 I think in the states it will have mac 'n cheese on the box. Canada will have "dinner".

turns out that MDT was trying to install the operating system on the same drive it booted from

9:59 PM
Not sure if it makes a difference

I need to stab someone......

That makes sense, all the boxes said that

why does chat keep telling me I've got 5 notifications in here.... KICK

@voretaq7 NE doesn't look close to graduation and the initial enthusiasm appears to be waning.

KICKKICKKICKKICKKICK Now behave.

10:02 PM
@Chopper3 Finance, hmmmph!

@Iain "Good" (it's not a big community like DBA or Security - I really doubt it can sustain itself)

Sigh
My GF is killing me

@RyanRies Stab her.
Self defense.

@voretaq7 Jail sucks

@RyanRies Self defense man! you just said she's killing you!

10:04 PM
@RyanRies just give the judge a fifth and talk about his divorce.

@voretaq7 still want the "Google it" vid cap...I think I'm going to make an animated gif with captions of it...better than nothing.

@TheCleaner The Jimmy Tatro one?

yeah...especially if animated gifs can be seen in answers here...(evil laugh inside)

@TheCleaner I think we got in trouble a while ago for using lmgtfy

yeah but that's not a pic :)

10:06 PM

yep that's the one

he really is a funny motherfucker. Very few people whose youtube videos make me laugh that consistently
I'm gonna start referring to my balls as Tatro tots
and his twitter feed has occasional gems too.

@TheCleaner his last video was all outtakes: youtube.com/watch?v=LTsTmJcdOyI&feature=youtu.be

@voretaq7 He should refer to his balls as Big Data.

10:13 PM
@WesleyDavid . . . I'll give you catnip if you reply to his tweet and suggest that.

@WesleyDavid All my stars

@MattBear Eh
It was ok

OK, time to go get my hair cut so I don't look like a fucking walking mop anymore.

@MarkHenderson I've felt like that soo many times lol

10:24 PM
@MattBear What, you want to go into your neighbous house and shoot their crying baby with a shotgun?

@JimmyTatro I suggest you refer to them as "Big Data", store them in Redis for fast access, and mine them with Nutch.
Now everyone RT that to annoy him.

@MarkHenderson no, just fed up with the Kardashians, Hiltons, Lohans, talk shows
all the crap that just... doesnt matter

And who the hell is Jimmy Tatro?

@voretaq7 I thought long hair was the new hotness?

working on configuring load balancing in azure
it has the functionality built it, so you dont need to pay for separate server to handle it

10:35 PM
Gah, this Red Hat server has Crohn's Disease. Stop shitting on everything dammit!!!
Thing is making a bigger mess than a cat on a peanut butter and laxative diet duct taped to a ceiling fan.
Oh now where the hell did your default route go to? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!
O_o

@WesleyDavid How'd you configure the interface?

@Adrian ifcfg-bond0, two physical interfaces. Default route exists in config but no packets sent to the gateway.
sigh

@WesleyDavid someone who isn't going to understand a word of what you just tweeted to him
oh I hate you markdown

@pauska Then he needs to learninate.

that might ring a bell

10:39 PM
@pauska Her name is Jimmy? What sick parents...

@WesleyDavid anything in your ifup-routes?

heh, on the bright side, I've figured out what that probe to my Bacula server every 15 seconds thats filling up my log is. It's the stay alive query from Azure's LB service

@WesleyDavid Are you setting the default route in your interface configs or in the global /etc/networks config?

@Adrian Nothing out of the ordinary that I can see.
@Adrian bond0 interface config. I never mess with the global file.

@WesleyDavid Good. I have noticed that one some of my boxes having the GATEWAY declaration in the interface config doesn't work though. Haven't really bothered to track it down.

10:50 PM
So I could describe a support issue I'm having right now...
device-mapper: multipath: Failing path 8:240.
device-mapper: multipath: Failing path 65:48.
sd 5:0:0:2: alua: port group 02 state A supports tolUsNA
sd 6:0:0:2: alua: port group 02 state A supports tolUsNA
sd 6:0:0:2: alua: port group 02 state A supports tolUsNA
sd 5:0:0:1: alua: port group 02 state A supports tolUsNA

@Adrian Okay this is psycho. This is just a test box, but it was working earlier.
Now it's not even pinging the LAN gateway but I can SSH to it. I wonder if it's some strange arp poisoning something-or-other
I ain't got time fo' dis!

Those errors are from a VM running Oracle... inside of a 6-host vSphere cluster... on an EMC SAN exporting NFS... where the multipath errors are coming from a direct gigabit connection on the VM to an iSCSI LUN presented from the same SAN.
It's like trying to blow yourself...

Annnnnd I deleted the wrong file >_>

@ewwhite Which a lot more people would do if it didn't murder your lower back...

@Tanner Just recreate the VMX

10:56 PM
@Tanner create a new VM, then specify the existing VMDK file.
that's all it'll take.

ah, thanks

@ewwhite I assume there was a good reason not to just give that storage to VMware and let VMware give the storage to the VM?

@freiheit I think it's a virtualized Oracle ASM cluster.
But having to worry about multipath from inside of a Virtual machine... that's just weird.

@ewwhite So, then, with the appropriate checkboxes in VMware for multiple VMs to have access...

@freiheit Boom! That probably works

10:58 PM
SF's been kinda' slow today... but then, I think my areas of interest on SF are relatively narrow.
