@ChrisS From what I can ascertain, if this is a 12dbi antenna it should do a 2000m link without worry at 150mw
That seems... wrong somehow
Ah I know what I've done wrong, I've put the wrong receiver strength down
Somehow I doubt an iPhone will pump out enough power to transmit back :p

@MarkHenderson Well, gain works both for receive and for TX by eliminating surrounding noise.

YAY! 00:12UTC.
For those of you with VTC privs.

Oo, a reopen queue. That's new

That question actually makes perfect sense and precisely describes what happens when someone tries to redirect output using a '>' to the 'mail' binary instead of a pipe as the root user

@Adrian Lesson, no one should be root!

12:21 AM
Not even root!

@84104 Last time I suggested sudo, well, let's just say everyone but me had an aneurysm.

@JeffFerland I'm still learning this, I figure it's gotta be complicated seeing as how you can be certified in it before being able to do certain jobs

@Adrian Well you don't have LDAP so that makes it a bit of a pain to deploy.

It looks as though an iPhone 4 has a -1.5dbi gain antenna, and about -73dbi sensitivity which should be good for about 300m
Which is all I need

@84104 do have NIS though, and it actually works fine with automated updates of the sudoers files.

12:23 AM
Why in fuck did anybody vote to reopen most of these?

Can the OP request a reopen review?

@Adrian I did know you could do that, but makes sense. Know next to nothing about NIS/NIS+.

@84104 Not worth knowing at this point. Anyone using it is a reason to run away fast.

Gack. Haven't touched NIS in years. Don't want to.

@Adrian Yeah, my knowledge consists of "Move to OpenLDAP with rfc2703bis schema and hopefully a krb5 authentication backend."

12:25 AM
@84104 Yeah. Sadly, I'm tied to a crappy in-house web-app that all the users spend 90% of their time in, so I have to deal with the scraps they give me.

@Adrian I gather that web-app talks directly to NIS.

@84104 Actually, the only obstacles are political at this point. The Devs convinced the boss that we need to do a full review of all existing job code combination before I start work on LDAP so that group memberships can be stored in the web-app instead of LDAP.
These, of course, are the same people that leave iptables wide open.
And go 400 days without patching Debian.
They want the web-app to be the central repository for everything. Mostly so that they don't have to learn how to get PHP to talk to LDAP.
Which is pretty damn simple when it comes down to it.

@Adrian It's very simple. I've even done it.

@84104 I know. It's painful. But that's what happens when you're trying to get away with paying 40-50k/year for developers.

@Adrian They make more than I do. -_-

12:32 AM
@84104 Dunno where you live, but that's about half the going rate for Developers in Seattle
We initially advertised at 36k since the other bosses decided to raid our budget, and we got exactly 6 resume's in.

I'm trapped by a poor job market at a lack of a college degree.

You can make nearly that here flipping burgers on the night shift.

Anyway, I'm serious about the rfc2703bis.schema vs nis.schema. So if it does ever happen keep that in mind.

@84104 Will do. The NIS > AD thing even worked until I hit password issues. So it's definitely workable.

Off to not starve. Have a good evening.

Q: A virus in a dell laptop restore cdrom?

ArrowInTreeI have a dell laptop, vostro xxxx. Even when I replaced the hard drive with a flash drive and doubly ran a disk wiping program on it and booted the Dell restore cdrom..... I would get a dialog request asking me if I wanted to install an UNSIGNED version of the program.... This is on W7SP1.... ...

Yes, and voted to close.
I'd vote to burninate too, if I could.

I've seen it and I ran away.

@ewwhite What's all this?

1:10 AM
Is this guy full of it, or is he right?

A: Will any SAS drive work in a Dell PowerEdge server?

Biff BlendonMost DELL servers, including their latest-generation R/T series, will run non-DELL drives just fine. There are a few exceptions, like the PowerVault MD3000, MD3000i, MD3200, MD3220 and some of their Blade servers. They absolutely require "certified" DELL drives with DELL firmware (no, you can NOT...

Mostly about the consumer SATA drives not being a problem.

You takes your chances and you roll the dice. Plus, there's a lot of self-justifying for past decisions that people hope turn out...

I've never been much of a gambler.
Use a proxy server, I think there is enough information on the internet, so you don't need post here, and you are not even on the good site, try serverfault.com — Michael B. 2 hours ago

1:33 AM
Hell yeah

Too bad they migrated a total ... question.

@MichaelHampton He is, but I am not sure he is wrong.
My Dell R300 is running 15K RPM SAS drives from HP.
If it had the space (the 300 is 1U) I would have added two 2TB SATA drives so I could rsync my home backups to a host fully under my control, yet at a different location

1:56 AM
@basil I had storage questions

@Adrian Yeah, gambler fallacy is always an issue. In general humans suck at risk assessment for a variety of reasons (irrational fears and misunderstandings are probably the biggest culprit, followed by recency bias). Lots of people say "It's worked well for the last 3 years", which means nothing about guarantees for the n*next* 3 years.
There probably is a good chance that his consumer grade SATA drives have worked well for a long time now. I've never had one of my personal drive die before it was 6 years old; does that mean I don't need backup because no drive will die before it's 6 years old - when put that way it seems insane.

Just back to the topic of WiFi again, anyone had any experience with Ubiquiti UniFi gear?
They seem very well priced, similar in features to most mid-level APs and look sexy to boot
And < $100/each for the 2.4Ghz versions

@MarkHenderson Yeah, every time I wanted to build out a wireless network and couldn't afford to price out AeroHive, I always came to them.
I'm wanting to put in their security camera system next year for a place
Prolly 6 cameras

@MarkHenderson For each direction of the link you have to look at the Sender Power, Sender Antenna Gain, Propagation Loss (Distance), Receiver Antenna Gain, Receiver Sensitivity, and Link Budget. And don't forget production variance, good manufacturers publish that, or you can just boost your budget to compensate. =]

@WesleyDavid So, you like too?
There are scant resellers of their equipment in Australia adn it's mostly wholesale
But I'll track em down if I have to

@MarkHenderson I like what I see, but I don't know if it's just a hard candy coating that gives way to fetid rot.

2:20 AM
@MarkHenderson We just did a bunch of office WiFi gear shopping... It came down to Unifi (on price) and Colubris (features). We didn't end up using Unifi, so I can't say how well they would have performed. But my boss is happy as a clam with the Colubris gear we got (got it "refurbished" too, so it was less than half retail price with a full lifetime warranty)

Like that Jolly Rancher joke.

@ChrisS Interesting. I had a look at the AeroHiv stuff @WesleyDavid mentioned but it's a bit pricy for this application. They have some fucking nice hardware though
I'll check out Colubris
@WesleyDavid You'll have to enlighten me...

@MarkHenderson Yeah, Aerohive is the shiznit but you pay for it hard.

@MarkHenderson What size network at you looking at? Want/need mobility?

@ChrisS the offices next to a warehouse. Two stories, about 200m long, entire steel frame, really rubbish wifi reception

2:23 AM
@MarkHenderson It's better to tell in person. I can't find any decently written variants of it online so far. If you want a joke told right, you gotta write it yourself I guess.

They've just had a very expensive fitout so it looks damn nice, so believe it or not asthetics have a bit of a role to play

Tell you what, when I come down to Australialand, I'll tell you the joke and you can introduce me to something Australian and female.

@WesleyDavid Well thankfully it's fairly cheap, without the need for special backhaul switches, so not much to lose
@WesleyDavid Deal

Actually, it's not technically a joke. More like a gross out "My friend knew a guy once who..." story.
So, I guess does that mean you'll say "By the by, that female isn't exactly a female..."?
"Got the Australian part down right good though!"

@MarkHenderson If aesthetics are necessary, I like to just keep the whole darn AP above the drop ceiling... That does limit range slightly, but nothing to see and a few extra APs can easily make up the difference (bonus with the shorter distance you can turn power down, support more clients, and get better throughputs) - all in the general case of course.

2:25 AM
@WesleyDavid I don't know any transgender people ;)
In fact I don't know that many single women either
So I better expand my pool of hotties before you come visit else you'll be dissapointed (my cousins live about 10hrs away from me)

Doesn't someone here do WiFi Hotspots for conferences and other events??

@MarkHenderson I like driving. Audio books are wonderous.

Lots of TG folks at my employee. Maybe 5-10% of our agency staff

@MarkHenderson I know more than I'd expect ;p

Stupid autocorrect.

2:27 AM
Mostly FTM tho, my best friend in junior college for example, and that french person who used to be a seriously smokingly hot chick.

@JourneymanGeek Didn't your ex become a man?

@MarkHenderson Become?

English is a messy language for that stuff.

@ScottPack Hello, adorable.

Sweetness.

2:40 AM
@MarkHenderson: yeah
thats the french person ;p

2:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek There was a (horrible but interesting) experiment done back in the 50's and 60's where two twins were born, but one of the twins lost their penis in a circumcision accident. A doctor advised the parents to just raise the child that lost their penis as a girl instead of a boy, to test out their theory that gender is nuture, not nature
As we now know though, gender is mostly nature. So of course the "girl" rejected all typical girl activities and preferred to act as a boy and hang out with the boys and wear boys clothes

@MarkHenderson: Oh, I totally respect his lifestyle choices. I just think he's a bit of a self centered asshole.
(god, why can't my life be less confusing ;p)

@JourneymanGeek yeah well i don't think thats restricted to people of any one gender :p

precisely ;p

A: Is it a bad idea for a firewall to block ICMP?

Scott PackCompared to other IP protocols ICMP is fairly small, but it does serve a large number of disparate functions. At its core ICMP was designed as the debugging, troubleshooting, and error reporting mechanism for IP. This makes it insanely valuable so a lot of thought needs to into shutting it down. ...

ICMPs are harrrrrrd

I hate talking about ICMP to people. Most of the time they just don't understand. It usually takes someone who actually really learned how networks work (i.e. a real Network Engineer or someone on that path) before they start realizing how useful ICMP is to, you know, keep things sane.

ICMP is a little like electrical wiring. You do not fuck with it unless you know what you are doing.

Funny story about that. I knew some people who were building a tightly restricted network zone with both ingress and egress filters, very tight change management controls, etc. Got services up and running in there, things went great for about a year, then one day one of those services went berserk. All kinds of shit changed and the service puked.
Turns out during approved firewall work some rulesets were standardized and echo replies/requests were permitted from the internal hosts to the DCs.
So suddenly about 1.5 years worth of GPOs that had never actually been applied all flew down the pipe.

@ScottPack Zot! Bad domain member.

I like to keep that story in resident memory because it's a good cautionary tale of fucking with ping.

3:25 AM
@ScottPack And remember children don't fuck with ping, because ping will fuck you harder.

@Jacob Punctuation. It's important.
Hi, btw. Feeling better these days?

@MarkHenderson Much better thanks.
@MarkHenderson peering around for MS Having a copy of Halo 4 has been pretty cool too.( Meaning even if I was still sick, I wouldn't notice

@Jacob Never really got into Halo
My younger brother was mad into the original Halo for the xbox
I find shooting on a console frustrating
I'm just biding my time till Hitman: Absolution; I think that will be my next gaming marathon

@MarkHenderson What's irregular about what you've just learned?
@MarkHenderson Need a hint?

3:40 AM
@Jacob I'm not sure?
That somehow you have a pre-release copy?

@MarkHenderson Yeah, I'm still buying a copy, but I really wanted to find out what the new studio did to the arc.

I'm pretty solidly hooked on CoD, WM3 at the moment. I'll never buy another Nintendo product though... They just don't know what they're doing; or something.

@Jacob "I'm still going to buy a copy" is the computer equivalent of the junkies "I can quit any time I want!" line
@ChrisS I bought a Wii several years ago, I played it for about 3 weeks and its just been sitting there collecting dust ever since

@MarkHenderson Well seeing as I want to play it online I sort of am required to. Microsoft is banning people in the 10 seconds between dashboard and game menu.
@ChrisS MW3?

I'm playing MW3 on Wii... The cheating is rampant. It's trivial to hack a Wii, there's no way to report cheaters to Nintendo or the game developer, there's no way to "friend" people in all the games that you have (like if you've got a buddy who has a Wii, you can't friend him in every game, you have to go into each game get your codes and enter them on eachother's consoles)
@Jacob Modern Warfare 3

3:45 AM
@Jacob I started buying games ever since I had the means to do so (i.e. a job), and Steam just makes is so incredibly simple

I haven't had a gaming rig in years now... Last built one in the early 2000 (maybe 2003 or 4)

@MarkHenderson a controller is easier with CP than a keyboard/mouse

Need to get mine up ><

@Jacob No controller is easier for anything than a keyboard and mouse.

3:48 AM
@ChrisS Yes Yes it really it...

We'll have to agree to disagree

@ChrisS Yeah so Jacob can only use one hand properly :p

I have a gamepad somewhere here. I have no idea since I hardly use it ;p

So good luck WASDing and shooting at the same time :p

I also get on people's nerves by switching game controls to "classic" layouts with inverted vertical axis.

3:49 AM
my keyboard on the other hand. I actually need to get another mechanical at some point ;p

@JourneymanGeek It's cool. It happens to everyone as they get older.

@ChrisS I used to be an inverted gamer, but I left that behind a few years ago
@JourneymanGeek They have pills for that these days

I've been saving for a gaming machine. Now that I FINALLY have enough money, I have no time to pick up the parts cause of school ;p

@JourneymanGeek Just as well cos if you could ge the parts you wouldn't be doing any schooling :p

They perfected controller layouts 20 years ago... Why modern games default to a sub-par experience is anyone's guess.

3:52 AM
@MarkHenderson: yes, responsibility. Apparently it happens to everyone as they get older ;p

"300 Inch LCD. They only sell them in Japan, but I know a guy. They had to ship it over in a tugboat like King Kong"

@JourneymanGeek You ahve to grow old, you don't have to grow up
Although growing up has its advantages
As does growing old. Like cheaper car insurance.

@MarkHenderson: not growing up dosen't mean iresponsibility tho

@JourneymanGeek No, but perhaps it should
I work with a 30-year-old who acts like a 19-year-old

and? ;p

3:56 AM
the word "responsibility" has been mentioned entirely too many times in this room for one day

If he has fun and gets shit done, who cares? ;p
Actually, I do have the time, if I didn't have to dog sit as much
whole morning blown on that, cause my parents wanted to bring the dog along, and they can't leave him in the car alone ><

4:19 AM
@ChrisS Yeah, seriously. That's not our responsibility.

4:51 AM
What is this room about?????
:)

@anilorap Donkeys

@MarkHenderson And punches.

@WesleyDavid And fisting

@MarkHenderson I remember that conversation. Wonder where Chloe is now...

@WesleyDavid Transmorphed back into Dan I guess

@MarkHenderson Wouldn't surprise me.
@MarkHenderson Oh you mean that Chloe and that Dan. Yeah.
@MarkHenderson mrow beddy time.

@WesleyDavid Cya
Home time for me too
Gotta go meet a painter so he can quote me a price so high that it feels like anal rape

@MarkHenderson That sounds like fun.

@ShaneMadden Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong profession
I should have gone into the building/renovations trade
Anyhoo cya

6:15 AM
g'morning

Hey
What's up @pauska
@WesleyDavid Who;s Chole and whos that Dan

6:49 AM
G'day

Liar.
Or did you mean you're having a good day? :)

Hi
He meant today was a good day

Ah, so he was lying.

Lying may refer to lie or fabrication, so I dont know which one you mean
As a matter of fact, telling someone a liar is a little bit OFF:)

@HopelessN00b timezone neutral greetings is too much before coffee so G'day suffices

6:56 AM
Just means it's not a good day over here, given that it's 3 AM, and I'm updating 9 year old RAID controller firware in response to a URE.

@HopelessN00b just think of the $$$

@Iain Ah, fair enough.
@Iain That what I was doing for 16 hours yesterday. Not cutting it too well today for some reason.
@Noah Well yeah, if I was serious. But not too many people out there would would seriously call someone a liar for saying G'day. Or at least, not too many that I've met or heard of.
Well slap my ass and call me Mary... updating the firmware for the first time in 9 years looks to have fixed the array. That's... odd.

@HopelessN00b what firmware?

RAID controller - HP smart array 642 (I think).
Who knew you were supposed to update your firmware at least once a decade, right?

and you could update it straight to the latest version?

7:17 AM
Yeah, which was pretty weird in and of itself. Every other HP driver or firmware I've had to update from a few years out of date have required an intermediate update first.

Maybe God's not pissed at me anymore. (hah!)

well, your customer is in for quite the performance benefit either way

Yeah dealing with old fellas could be a pain in the neck.
By old fella, I dont mean men, I mean devices
So dont take it the wrong way, even if you did, I wouldnt give a...
@HopelessN00b I guess you gotta go and teach them a lesson.

@pauska Nah, turns out God still hates me. So at least the world makes sense again.
@Noah Pretty sure these guys are incapable of learning. Otherwise they'd just buy a new server and pay me a couple hundred bucks to set it up, instead of paying me thousands of dollars to keep a server that's worth less than a couple hundred bucks limping along.

Q: Not able to login in windows server 2008 r2

SohailIn windows server 2008 r2, when I am pressing ctrl alt delete its taking me to workstation menu, so how to press it so that i can log in?

(LOL!)

@HopelessN00b what does he mean by workstation menu ?

Can anyone help me with this problem :

@HopelessN00b send them over to me, I will teach these suckers how to treat a hoplessNOOB.

@GroovyUser look at the top right corner of this window

@Iain No idea, presumably he's just using the wrong terminology.

@pauska And put your goggles on

@pauska Yes, in the top right corner, it clearly states .

7:34 AM
@HopelessN00b This could be a dinner menu

Shocking news; a RAID card from 2003 does not have drivers for (or run properly on) Server 2008 R2. I for one am almost doubled over in... "shock."

@HopelessN00b Do you want me to call the cops?

@Noah Nah, won't do any good. I've called them so many times they won't come out any more. They just tell me stupidity still isn't against the law and to stop using 911 to report it.

Q: How can we remove Exchange 2007 roles without a DC available?

kuldeep UpadhyayHow can we remove Exchange 2007 without contacting a DC? We need to remove the roles because we want to re-utilize the server. Our domain structure has changed and no DC exists any longer for that domain. I'm running on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Do you guys want that? It's not really home networking :P

@OliverSalzburg Your call. It's on topic here, but it really does look like you already have the right answer for it.

@HopelessN00b Thanks

I’ve been made aware that there is a video series going on over at Brocade’s community website. The series is called “Ask Alan” in which questions directed at Marketing Manager Alan Murphy have a chance at being answered with a whiteboard discourse. So far, things are fairly high level as it appears that the discussions have been aimed at introducing basic subject matte

We have been moved to clouds. So we are planning to use the same server for other database. As well as our domain has also changed. So when i am trying to remove exchange it asking for the DC to be contacted. — kuldeep Upadhyay 2 hours ago

@PatelRikin Good morning. First, we are not a support chat. Second, if something's wrong with Microsoft's site, there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.

hmm, superuser.com/questions/488858/… this needs to die painfully, right?
(as opposed to getting migrated here)

The question is horrible. And that's that same user who wants to remove Exchange 2007 roles...

11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh yes

@JourneymanGeek Yes. NARQ'd

Just flagged it NARQ

ya, brought it up in the SU mod room
/me isn't sure if flagging it is the right etiquette

Until I get 3K on SU...
And it is a particularly bad question

lol, I feel the same way about SF ;p

11:33 AM
@MichaelHampton that link comes from an accepted link only answer on SF

@Iain Oh gawd.

@MichaelHampton I just closed it TL because erm it is now

Didn't see anything about that in the last hundred messages or so?

@MichaelHampton here serverfault.com/questions/258122/… it's old

I guess the AD on their servers got corrupted because their new server cloud was stormy that day?
It's quite nice to find the solution to an issue that's kicking the asses of our dev team and my director on stack overflow.

Q: Windows Update Error 800B0001 in Windows7

AntonioUpdate: This question moved to SuperUser, please do not downvote. Update fails with error code 800B0001 after installing fresh instance of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Is there a way to fix this?

@Iain Being that this is an issue with WSUS, it probably should be here...

@MichaelHampton is it ?

Unfortunately he forgot that little detail when he posted it the first time.

@MichaelHampton well the flagger and I can only go on what's there ...

True enough. I told him to edit his question :)
So you might see that come through again soon.

@MichaelHampton I can go ask for it now it contains the relevant info but without it it looked like a home user

12:04 PM
@MichaelHampton It shows on the screenshot that it's managed by WSUS.

Doh!
I guess we all fail this morning.

I don't know how I managed to see it... I haven't even had my coffee yet.

I'm only on my first cup. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Q: Windows Update Error 800B0001 in Windows7

AntonioUpdate fails with error code 800B0001 after installing fresh instance of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Note: the system is connected to WSUS. Is there a way to fix this?

I just answered it :)

12:09 PM
@MichaelHampton where does it show it's managed by wsus
the last line - updates managed by your system administrator?

Dan
@MichaelHampton A 3 second Google would have found him that

@Iain yea that line

@Dan Yeah, I know

@Hugh cheers

Well, strictly speaking it says that a group policy has been applied that modifies the default windows update settings. (I think it's changing the upstream server that makes that line appear), but it usually means WSUS.

12:19 PM
Well the guy SAID it was WSUS... after he got punted to SU

I should have put my own OT->SU comment on it
Your question is off topic for Serverfault because it doesn't appear to relate to servers/networking or desktop infrastructure in a professional environment. It may be on topic for Superuser but please search their site for similar questions that may already have the answer you're looking for.
which would have perhaps triggered him to provide more information

@Iain What do you think of suggested edits like this one?

@Iain What. WHAT. God Dammit.

?

@MichaelHampton seems OK I've done lots like that see this meta.serverfault.com/questions/876/…

12:26 PM
I flagged that original question and suggested he asks it on SU. As we found out he "forgot" to mention that he was using WSUS.

@tombull89 the OP neglected to say initially that is was connected to WSUS so it looked like a home/single user question
@tombull89 it's sorted now unless he gets a headache from the spinning

shakes head proof that, as ever, we need to be psychic.

Oh, but it was in the screenshot...which NONE of us noticed.
Maybe he thought that was enough?

I noticed it :D
Do I get a cookie?

Q: Domain controller malfunction

user1452932We have one domain and two domain controllers (on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise). For about a week, we have enormous problems: some users can't log in to Windows (domain could not be contacted). Sometimes restart of Windows helps, but mostly it doesn't. As administrator, I can't log in to DC0...

172 and 193 addresses?!

I... don't even want to know. Do you? Really?
