@Holocryptic DO NOT FORGET THE COVER SHEETS ON YOUR TPS RIPORT!

@voretaq7 I don't. It's finding stuff to put behind the cover sheet that's the hard part...

@Holocryptic oh, just make it up like everyone else.

What do you think I'm doing right now??

writing a random timesheet generator?

that too, on top of everything else
5 hrs = Serverfault chat

8:08 PM
@Holocryptic 3 hrs = LOLcat meme autogenerator.

Pretty much. My life is a LOL

@Holocryptic <karen> It's funny 'cuz it's sad! </karen>

@voretaq7 I bet you cried when that show went off the air

@Holocryptic naw, I didn't really like it.
but I LOVED the Karen soundboard it spawned.
(mostly because I know drunk chicks with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money - Just like her!)

Q: Sharing a switch with both internal and external interfaces

MattI am wondering if it would be safe to setup my network with a single switch running both internal and external interfaces. Currently I have a 255.255.255.240 block of IPs from the ISP and a 10.10.10.0/24 private network running from the router. The router has one WAN port and is setup with one o...

I saw that Q
and I was like, well, I could write a long winded answer...... but I don't really care

8:13 PM
that's an option
but that's crossing the mean threshold even for me. That's probably like 1.1 TomToms

so, not that I want to argue with the mods, but I really do want to get rid of crap questions, too

Q: Recommendation for e-mail forwarding

Paul MrozowskiWe currently have a provider that we use to primarily forward our e-mails to both a hosted Exchange site and to outside e-mail addresses. We have a large # of forwards set-up (maybe 500). They work fine for us but the bandwidth costs are a getting pretty expensive (approx 80GB in email a month) s...

and I try to stay under .5 TomToms most of the time

I flagged it as not constructive (shopping question) and it was rejected

@Aaron I voted it OT it as a shopping question.
I guess NC is probably a better reason though...
I even left a nice comment as to why it's a bad fit.

8:30 PM
blah

fuck yeah

@Holocryptic Your last day on helpdesk if you decide to quit I want you to answer a call and tell them your name is Mahmed Udi.

Q: Managing and configuring syslog-ng for very large logs

Thomas VincentI have the logs traditionally kept in /var/log/ piped through syslog-ng. The logs can reach to the terabyte size on a daily basis. In order to make them more manageable. I would like break them out by server and app cluster. Is this the best way to do it? How do I do this with Syslog-ng that...

1TB of logs a day? Jebus.

@voretaq7 Oh, I'll totally pull a third world helpdesk accent.

Q: How enable FXP (server to server trabsfer) in windows server?

mehmanI want use server to server ftp between windows server 2008 and 2003 default ftp service. client is cuteFTP. how can i enable it?

8:44 PM
@ShaneMadden fxp... wasn't that an Intel ethernet device?
 fxp -- Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 Ethernet device driver

@voretaq7 That there is some serious logging. One syslog server getting that much log per day is a little insane.

@ShaneMadden UDP FTW.
"Log messages? Never got 'em - AND YOU CAN'T PROVE OTHERWISE!"

That's the problem with UDP jokes.
...

@ShaneMadden cuz no one gets them?

8:48 PM
@Holocryptic the best thing about UDP jokes is I don't care if anyone gets them.

@Holocryptic Well, they might. There's no way to know.

@voretaq7 Something wrong if you're generating 1TB of "logs" per day...

@ChrisS -vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

@ChrisS yes, but we need to store, sort, print, collate, decollate, staple, burst and recollate the logs in order to find out what's wrong.
Bugs:
This daemon needs a --stfu flag.

I mean, if you have 20000 nodes, then sure, generate a terabyte. But if you have 20000 nodes, you probably have more than one syslog server.

8:50 PM
@ShaneMadden LOGS MUST BE CENTRALIZED!
AT ANY COST!
I can't imagine generating more than a gig or two of logs - even for netflow data that's a lot.

@Holocryptic We're gonna need an image re: "All the logs". Get to it.
We had about 5 gigs a day hitting splunk at my last job, but that was all the spammy windows host logs etc.

@ShaneMadden "You're Windows machines. Nobody cares what you do!"

@Holocryptic I actually LOLd

haha

8:53 PM
@voretaq7 Vegetarian Windows machines, no doubt.

@Holocryptic So, I just yesterday finally got a smart phone. Twitter is still set to sms certain stuff. That reply of @voretaq7's just caused that thing to twiddle like the world was about to end.

Godless Domainless Heathen Windows Admin: "We taught a server to run NT!"
NT Server: *cough* *wheeze*

@voretaq7 I may or may not have a single system that generates something approaching 100GB/day.

@ScottPack mrr?
@ScottPack fix your buggy code :)

Hmm....log all teardowns....

8:56 PM
@ScottPack ha, what's weird is that I don't see your twat to me in my timestream

@ScottPack Log all log writes!
also what smartphone did you get? Steve Jobs Memorial Edition iPhone?

@voretaq7 Be careful about writing a packet capture to the screen when logged in via ssh :)

Log full captures of each outbound UDP/514 packet.

@voretaq7 HTC Inspire.

@ScottPack I've done that. Just gotta grep out traffic to your IP :-)

8:58 PM
@voretaq7 It's....a bit noisy :)
You're better off to bpf the fuck out of that.

Oh, there it is. For some reason TD isn't picking it up..

G'd evenin

@Iain Ohai2YouGoodSir

Right. Time to change those settings.
Text message notification, new email alert, and TD if it ever decides to work.

@ScottPack I disable texts for twitter. I've got an app to annoy me.

9:00 PM
@ScottPack how goes the ITS mod election ?

@voretaq7 Until yesterday I didn't have data services.
@Iain Oh, it ended last week. Of the 8 candidates, 2 were a landslide win, and 3rd place was pretty much a dead heat.
Any one of us could have won, depending on which vote allocation algorithm was used.

:2119966 2000 threshold

I think you can edit at 2k

Apparently the bar is lower than I had thought; methinks it should be higher...

Oi, it's late. Have a wonderful evening all!

9:03 PM
Time to go home; 3 cold beers waiting in the fridge.

@ScottPack :(

9:15 PM

that move cpmbackup question, I sense a long, slow, decline into stabbing

@Aaron Ahh... cpanel.

@Aaron wait.... wut?

Q: Moving a 40Gb file truncates it to 5Gb

erfanI want to move a file called cpmbackup.tar.gz from the folder /home/username to /home/username/public_html (and afterwards change the permission to 644 so it can be downloaded from another server with ssh wget URL.tar.gz). But, after I move this file to public_html, only 5 or 6 gig of the 40Gig ...

no mark , i have use copy button from cpanel

9:22 PM
I'm sorry, dave, I only have ssh and cpanel
I give up

digitaladdictions & Shane Madden yes :) this problem for move use Cpanel , i with ssh mv very very easy & fast transit this file (+40Gig) TanX From All (have Good Time), ...
okay...

yay ! back over 20K

9:50 PM
"I have SSH and cpanel"
I have old boot and dead rat on string.

@iain I'm not upset. I ran to give a broader pool, not to beat anyone else. All the candidates were great.

@ScottPack changing topics entirely - how are your quince ?
@Zoredache hi - how goes ?

@Iain, mostly fine. Puppet is giving me an odd headache. It appears to have a limit to the length you can use for class names... But I can't find it documented anywhere.

I don't know puppet - it's on my to learn list

As in it errors out when I have a class named 'openvpn::foobar-remote-site-client', but doesn't when I used 'openvpn::foobar-remote-site'...

10:02 PM
@Iain I'm torn between Puppet and Chef to replace radmind

@Iain, no worries. I might ask a question the site if I can't find a solution..

@voretaq7 jumpstart has been my friend

@Iain I like radmind - it's just very niche - Puppet/Chef both have bigger followings so they get cool new shit faster

Well I am really liking puppet other then the occasional odd quirk here and there.

10:30 PM
Same, puppet's solid but their language could use a few whacks with the clue-bat. Their variable scoping is so drunken.

10:50 PM
that puppet thing I mentioned was an operator error. I managed to set the filesystem permissions wrong.

@Iain I'll have to wait until the spring to really find out. It's already pretty much shed all of it's leaves for the winter.
If I were going to do any fertilzation, should I do that now, before winter sets in, or wait until after the winter freezes?

11:18 PM
Anyone familiar with IIS rewrite rules? I've created one... but it isn't working.
Does the "Match URL" need to begin with a '/' or not?

11:35 PM
Ah, nvm... figured it out.
