10:01 PM
Seems to be working.
No more debugging tonight, though. They went home.

A: Speeding up JPG "videos" pulled from a proxied web cam?

MikeyBIt's not gorgeous but it takes care of the by-the-time-an-image-arrives-its-expired problem. Bonus points for writing an adaptive algorithm that adjusts the timing so that each image is fetched in advance but arrives a short while before it expires ;) sourceImage = "http://www.yourwebsite.com/v...

:)
Shit, speaking of... later guys!

Lol@this guy

Later! Thanks for the improvement!

A: What kind of database should I use because MySQL is not meeting my need?

Lazy BadgerFirst of all - in SQL world MySQL is fastest engine with very good scalability. I think, you can|have to redesign some parts in order to get real performance, 1 million operation per hour isn't impossible number. Maybe you'll want to examine all possible backend-engines and change used at ...

nitpick MySQL isn't actually a database engine, it's a DBMS. InnoDB and… uhhh… the other one are the engines, right?

10:16 PM
@MikeyB correct
which is one of the many reasons MySQL SUCKS

@voretaq7 What's your pick of database poison?

sigh I need to escape from the world.
I don't mind working on this web server issue, but I'm going to be out of work on and off to help with a medical issue fer' my wife. :-(

@ShaneMadden Postgres if I can't afford Oracle
I like my database systems to be closely-coupled with their engines, and I like by DB engines to not do stupid shit like have a forever-length transaction log that you can't truncate :-)
@BartSilverstrim mrr? :offers sympathy scotch:

@voretaq7: she was in a fender bender and got a concussion. She finally decided to see the doctor today. Doctor told her no going to work for a week.
She has a CAT scan tomorrow.

ugh

10:28 PM
I'm just mixed up between getting the web server stuff done somewhat close to "right" while running around to the doctor for followups.
There are times when I'm feeling pressure to "just get it working" instead of taking time to do it right.
Or try to do it right.
And you can tell my priorities are somewhat divided at the moment :-)
if you know what I mean.
Keep a happy face and pretend everything is fine.

I've never been above telling a client that there's a family emergency and they can either delay the project or I can give them hackery and come back later to fix it at a slightly reduced consulting rate)
Some clients say "come back when you can concentrate", others say "Gimmie the hack"

Problem is that most of what we do is hackery :-/
I feel bad when I look at what I've got to show for my job as projects and I rarely can say that I've done something I feel was extraordinary.
Actually this web server was pretty thorough.
I'll be documenting the changes for this camera work tomorrow; I had to go when I got the call saying that my wife managed to get an appointment for the doctor this afternoon.
Managed to just get the reverse proxy in Apache working, though. That was pretty good.

All projects are special when you're resume-writing :-)

I had a few. But I never feel adequate.

I need to catch up on migrating Hackery into Real Solutions this week

10:36 PM
Sucker does file alteration monitoring, antivirus/malware scans, notifications by email, hacked AD modifications for the CMS...
Documented everything in a writeup.
Keeping it up to date as I alter things.
Backups and database dumps nightly.
Charts data access and stats.
Kinda proud of this little VM.

that's fairly substantial

Now I'll be working on also keeping an eye on my wife. I think she's more stressed that she can't go to work.
Work stresses her but she's more afraid of what happens by not being there :-/ Gotta love America.
The server even emails me if it gets rebooted and the volume to which it saves backups isn't mounted so I know to fix it.
I swear the main goal of hospitals and insurance companies is to make people wish they died.
We go into the hospital and they start asking if health insurance or auto insurance is covering the visit...we were like, um...whichever one won't end up costing more? We don't care, we just want to SEE A DAMN DOCTOR.
ugh

@BartSilverstrim it's not the hospital's fault - Insurance in this country is the übersuck.

I know. I think it's a combination of both of them and the patients get splashed with the piss.
The accident wasn't severe enough to be reported, and we were relieved it wouldn't mean a hike in rates. Now we don't know what is going to happen if this goes to them.
The point is we shouldn't have to worry about it.

About the only way to get care without being asked about insurance is to come in with a recently-detached limb.

10:43 PM
Are you two still at work?

I'm not.

and when the next of kin arrives they should expect to be interrogated

I was working over the VPN

yeah, but I'm about to leave :-P
IBBL though probably

yikes

10:44 PM
That sucks. What's on the docket?

<- is single again, so I pretty much have no life and live in my office. ::is pathetic::

You should go home and have some happy juice.

Work for our international launch -- Taking the localized versions of all our code that the developers spent time pulling out of their asses & making it run on our production environment (because god forbid devs test their shit - "It worked on my machine!")

@BartSilverstrim Heck with that; go to the bar and find some happy juice... and someone to share it with.

That entails social interaction and staggering home.

10:46 PM
(actually our developers are decent. Very few tweaks required, and usually in obvious places specifically added so I'd have a convenient knob)

I'd rather go home and imbibe, then stagger to my bed.

@BartSilverstrim Ah yes, the walk of shame... I know thee well.

@BartSilverstrim and in my case going to a gay bar, which will probably result in my beating the lisp out of some ancient queen who can't take "no, get lost" for a hint :-/

Staggering home entails risk of someone stopping and sticking me in the back of a car with blinky lights.
@voretaq7: yeah, that could suck even more unless you're happy enough that you won't remember it in the morning.

(for the record I don't mind ancient queens - some of my best friends are ancient queens - but they dont be hittin' on me after the first time I said "no")

10:48 PM
I didn't black out, I simply don't remember what happened...

@BartSilverstrim Not enough booze at the bar my friend :-)

+2 for beer goggles

Not a fan of Bacardi 151, eh?

"I swear she was way better looking last night"

I actually had a waitress at Red Lobster say that she thought she was the only one to drink it straight.
Rereading that it didn't sound the way I intended. sigh

10:49 PM
There aren't many liquors I'll drink straight; Bacardi ain't one of the either.

I drink it plain because I'm too lazy to mix it.
After three or four ounces I don't care about the burn.

ok, it's getting-the-fuck-out-of-here time

g'night @voretaq7.

The Captain tastes better anyway.

Try to get home for a decent amount of time :-)
Wife likes captain.
I take bacardi...flavored vodkas.

10:53 PM
I've got two fifths of Smirnoff Orange, one in the freezer too.
Also a fifth of Smirnoff Raspberry, Captain Silver, Everclear, two Caralona's Irish Creme, Tequila Rose, Peach Schnapps, Butterscotch Schnapps, and likely a few I'm forgetting about, as well as half a dozen mixes (white chocolate martini mix to cosmo mix)
That's just the stuff that's in the fridge ready to go..

I think I'd have to go through the fridge to find out what I have.
There's a little bacardi, I know. Cherry vodka, I believe. Some captain.
Peach schnapps.
Mixing it just dilutes the alcohol.

Well the Peach Schnapps is just to mix with more potent alcohols, dilute it any further and you wont ever get a buzz off it.

schnapps and captain were my wife's.
I like stuff that just makes the world go floaty.
Adding stuff makes the floaty harder to get.

=]

If it's floaty you want, can't go wrong with grain alcohol in pure grapefruit juice. Or just do what the Russians do and go with straight vodka. (Flavours are for wimps BTW)

11:07 PM
I have straight vodka when it's available. :-)
I keep considering the crystal skull vodka

@voretaq7 still around?

He went home. Hopefully to relax with the Captain.

@BartSilverstrim alrighty then, maybe you can help me fry my new switch

@BartSilverstrim Friend got that; he liked it; but he likes the bottle more, which he uses to make mixed drinks to bring to parties.

@BartSilverstrim I'm going to buy a 7.5 volt adapter, not a 7 volt, will that matter?

11:16 PM
Probably not. But you might want to get a more authoritative answer.

@BartSilverstrim I just got one, it needs 7.5 not 7:)
thanks

Might depend on how sensitive it is. But I don't think it would hurt it.

@BartSilverstrim no, the switch needs 7.5, it's the same as the universal adapter

Oh. In that case, it wouldn't hurt it, but you might see weirdness under load.
Chances are you'd be fine until you find a better fit.
You wouldn't fry it for underpowering it.
You'd risk it not working at all or having spontaneous reboots or quirky behavior, but not frying.
