Q: SE: Graphic Design - appropriate for interface design review?

Jonathan ToddI'm a web developer and interface designer, and for the improvement of my development structure and practice, I can go to SE's Code Review. However, even more than I focus on the quality of back-end design, I focus, in extreme-detail, on developing the best possible user interface for the softwar...

Q: Do you think that a Code Review style site for Graphic Designers will be supported by the Graphic Design Community?

jt0ddProposal: Design Review I think the graphic design community will support the proposal for the equivalent of what Code Review is to Stack Overflow. On the same basis that Code Review was founded, Design Review will be the Code Review equivalent for Graphic Design. Why is Design Review a good id...

If you looked at it before, check again, I added some nice supporting graphics and detail to the start of the post. A graphic representation of a question with an answer, compared to a similar Code Review version.

Hey there Ink Spotters! Could some of you spare me some €0,02 in a sticky situation?
I'm basically trying to let one of my customers go, but I'm trying to find the best way to do so.

2:26 PM
What's up @Bakabaka ?

@JonW thanks for the heads up! Added my opinion

This is a customer who has the habit of venting her frustration on me. I talked to her webshop supplier on her behalf just to help her (for free).
the webshop supplier is slow in their communication, but when I tell her this, she acts like it's all my fault. And that's not the first time she acts like this when I do something for her as a service. I want to 'break up' with her
should I just tell her 'I won't work for you anymore?' Or scare her away with a large rate increase?

@JohnB morning, I agree with your opinion on that. A separate review site seems counter productive and calling the SE one a success seems a bit of a stretch when its not out of beta.

@Bakabaka I've had to deal with something similar, flat out told someone "we're not currently capable of helping you with this project". That didn't stop him, he came back twice after that
@Ryan howdy, warm down there? Cold up here :(

@JohnB it was a tad chilly this morning but pretty nice overall. Poured miserably yesterday

2:36 PM
@JohB thanks for reading :) And what did you tell him when he came back?

well, I ignored his last e-mail...
so I am probably not the best person to ask :)

that... could work in the short run
hm. could be that I'm making this bigger than it is -- if I just don't take any work from her anymore, this should be ok.

He wanted a bunch of sponsor logos printed. They were not print ready and needed to be vectorized. Normally I don't mind doing that if they are simple, but this was 3 very complex logos. We're a print shop, not a vectorization shop

@Bakabaka I would just say, "At this point in time the commitment and expectations you're seeking from us (me) is unrealistic. We were hired to do X and X. You're holding us accountable for Y and Z. As a result we're going to need to either renegotiate the terms of our contract with you or nullify it entirely."

I just kept telling him that they need to be vector, he wouldn't listen and kept sending the same raster art

2:39 PM
@Ryan fortunately, I don't have any kind of contract with her anymore. All we had are finished and paid for.

@Bakabaka if you're part is done then just tell her that. "Listen, I've tried to help you but my role is really done. These additional things are between you and your other vendors. If you really need assistance I'll have to charge you a consulting fee."

@Ryan sounds like a good one.
Thanks, gentlemen. This helps!

Just don't hold me accountable :P

I won't, promise :)

doesn't sound like a fun situation, good luck!

2:43 PM
ah well, she hasn't required any work from me anymore, as with your example, @JohnB. Yet.
Thanks
@Ryan 'unrealistic' is spot-on here... this woman expects the heavens for a couple pennies.
ok, I
'll stop rambling :)

@Bakabaka I feel for you. The annoying part with my client is that we did free vectorization for him before because it was a simple logo. He expects the same again because he got it before
there's a lesson for me somewhere in there

@JohnB uh-huh, I know what you mean. I've been kind to this customer before, and now she expects the same kind of service over and over again
A related lesson I recently learned is to always mention a discount on the invoice if you're charging someone a special rate.

that is definitely something I should be doing

That way, the customer will clearly see the money they saved, and won't be (too) surprised when they have to pay full the next time around
On top of that, it adds to people being conscious about how much your work is worth.

Q: Redesign Request: ASK QUESTION Rollover / Hover State

RyanThe button for "ASK QUESTION" while appears to be working is incredibly subtle in my opinion. Not really a bug but if it could be a bit more obvious like when you rollover the tags I think it would be a lot better. Even the "Questions Tags Users Badges Unanswered" is extremely subtle (on Meta, t...

I wonder if I pissed Stephane off in the initial critique so he's just ignoring me. More upvotes then most of the minor tweak requests and yet no response at all

apparently, I haven't asked any questions since gaduation -- I never saw the rollover. Intuitively, I expected it to become white text on a red bg.
but... he seemed to take lots of (sometimes rather harsh) critique quite well. why not yours?

no clue but it was asked on the 2nd and he responded to a large number of requests on the 3rd and a few more on the 4th

I posted a similar critique in the original thread
I am moving to CC soon. Either be happy for me or sad for me depending on your opinion :)

if I knew what CC was I'd have a comment...?

Creative Commons?

3:20 PM
Carson City NV?

Closed Captions?
CinCinatti?

Adobe CC

oooh I'm already on it, its... eh. Not the end of the world

I don't think I'll care, I'm not paying for it

ah, CondolenCes.

3:22 PM
er, I'm not the one paying for it
that sounded bad haha

Only things I'm not satisfied with are updates failing at times and have to start over on it. Sometimes it randomly asks me to Register especially for Adobe Acrobat even though I already have numerous times. And the Font Manager is nowhere near as good or comprehensive as the old Adobe Fontfolio

I'm not a fan of the subscription model still. Maybe it'll grow on me. If this was for personal use I'd probably stick with CS6

could be worse. It could've been Carson City.
damn I'm thinking of evening MBA and just saw this
one of those salaries is not like the others lol

I guess IT workers get paid extra for the added stress/stupidity factor

still reading up on Carson City

off to a lunch meeting, adios

Q: What do do with On Hold questions that have positive votes and multiple answers

YiselaThis post emerges from this particular question: How can I design a simple interface for a complex application? Question got positive votes and 5 answers, put it has been put On Hold as too broad. I think that if a question received this much attention it means there's value in it, and I s...
