7:03 PM
@scott I would do any data manipulation (switch) in PHP, then format with HTML in JavaScript

@JohnB that's what I'm thinking. Just not grasping how to send the data back correctly. But that's why I bought the video courses :) It's just one of those things that once I "get" it, things will be fine. But finding that epiphany moment can be troublesome. Hopefully the video lessons will strike a chord.

what do you mean "send it back"?
from PHP to JavaScript?

yeah... getting the data via ajax so that it can be used in the html.

I would build an array of associative arrays within PHP

Basically translating the php variables (after manipulation) back to JSON for the ajax

7:06 PM
send that as JSON to JavaScript

then calling the JSON content for use in the page
In that question... the php switch....
I don't understand how to send the DB info AND the switch variable setting BACK to the ajax... that's the hurdle I'm hitting
I can sen the php aray
I can send a variable
I don't "get" how to do both.
Like a php function.. you can return variables
you can do all your db calls nad data manipulation in the PHP function, then simply return whatever you want to return
If I set a return in a PHP AJAX call.. does it return the same way a php function will return data?
I realize this is probably a bit complex and I may be a bit dense here
I need to set up a real-world example so I can show where I'm stuck.

wow

I'm just trying to read through and make sure I'm not missing something and guiding you the wrong way :)

and I thought I was in trouble today

This isn't a big deal. It's more about personal education for future benefit.

7:12 PM
feel ya.. Im debating on what language to learn this fall and winter

this would be very simple if we were in a room together with a big whiteboard

work has granted funding for it =)

Yup. I agree John :)

video chat?
wait..
nevermind

It's too difficult to explain where my brain is failing me :)
I know what I want is possible. But I don't know enough to explain it accurately to others.

7:14 PM
this help ease your pain?

yup :)

oh I battle that all day!
right now I battle what language I can do everything I want in and where can I learn it

See I can do everything with PHP, jquery, and HTML. But I'm not grasping how to use AJAX even though I know the pieces.
Basically.. I can crack and egg.. can't make an omelet though ;)

you forgot bacon
but do you know php as an OOP solution?

yeah.. but with more and more data.. and hidden content via jQuery, php is slow. I want db calls only when I need them, not on page load.
Imagine....
DB_query---
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
return variable
manipulate variables
manipulate variables
manipulate variables
manipulate variables
manipulate variables
Return data
with 3,000 rows
Times 300 itmes

7:19 PM
my PHP is rusty so I don't know if this will work, but this is how I picture it:

then hide 2900 rows of data via jquery for each of the 300 items
it gets teribly slow on page load
That's helpful John! Thanks. Pushing data into the array makes sense

where is $field coming from?
or rather, where should it come from?

Nowhere in particular. I can send that via ajax to the call or use a previous query in the php.
That was an example off the top of my head

do you know how to send it via ajax?

I understand how to send variable to the AJAX

7:23 PM
alright just checkin

appreciate it
Bascially.. I need to do all data manipulation in the php and configure the array to hold the data how I want it.. then spit out the array via JSON, right?
and then I can decode the JSON back on page? correct?

that is how I would do it, whether or not that is the best way is not something you should ask me :)
correct

cool. VERY helpful.
I'm just seeking to understand at the moment.. will worry about "best" way later :)

so that should produce something like:
[
    {"id":1,"value":"scott"},
    {"id":2,"value":"matt"},
    {"id":3,"value":"yisela"}
]
for you to do whatever with in JavaScript
(disclaimer I tested none of the code so something might need amended)

Thanks. I just wast getting the "Push the data as an array into the JSON array". That simple thing makes sense and I think was the step I was not getting. Knowing I have to construct an array containing the data as I want it is very helpful.

7:32 PM
ah, cool
lemme know if you run into any other bumps along the way, I'll be more than happy to take a look

thanks!

for now, I must go move dirt around
adios!

see ya!

8:12 PM
sweet
walk out for a cig, come back and the entire office emptied out

?

everybody left, office is quiet, so no bosses walking by my desk every two seconds

ha ha.. john is out with his tractor so does that mean he qualifies as farmer john?

sounds it

so what have you been up to today @Eric

8:56 PM
codeacademy php lesson
trying get a grip on it
@Matt_2.0 what about you?

9:13 PM
actually I was looking at codeacademy too but for jQuery refresher
also working on what I should do tonight. I am really tired and I cant seem to sleep much lately but I when I get home I wont be able to sleep because I have ideas to execute.

I hate that creative insomnia :)

im getting a lot of it because I promised myself by September I would be done with designs and fully in code till spring next year

9:37 PM
Nice Stanford courses coming up: online.stanford.edu/courses

@Yisela hi

hi Matt!

how is your morning

it's testing day today, not my favourite
but it's going well, it's finally sunny so I could walk from to work
it's 6km, I feel fit :P

10:08 PM
Anyone else on a Mac and constantly have to deal with the cursor disappearing?

10:56 PM
guess you all can't get your cursor to hit the reply box :)

Hi! I don't use mac, so I have no idea :)

well.. its frustrating!

ask a new question :D

@Yisela just an FYI if you post your Behance individual work to your image LinkedIn it will everything over from Behance to LinkedIn
@Scott reply reply...

@Matt_2.0 Oh damn I just remember I forgot to check your new jobs there, sorry!

11:04 PM
it cool I am used to it ;)

@Matt_2.0 do you have to do it one by one? are you using the app?

ya each though
tags back to your Behance, too.

did you have to install anything or are you using the Get discovered thing?

hmm.... linkedIn has become a huge Phishing site for me. Constant request from people I've never heard of let alone worked with.

11:38 PM
@Yisela get discovered
@Scott so you are on LinkedIn?

well.. only to the point that I accept invitations and so clients can contact me if they've lost my info. I don't really use it much
same for facebook and twitter. I have accounts, but don't really use them for anything other than to have the username.
