3:06 AM
@JohnB For example, a question about portfolio sites and what is/is not considered professional; Behance vs Wordpress, responsive vs not, etc.

2 hours later…
5:18 AM
@Yisela why are my comments being deleted?

6:01 AM
@Matt_2.0 Dunno what you're referring to, but generally: comments aren't intended to be long-lasting, if there's a discussion on clarification or something then the post gets clarified, it's encourages to clean up the comments

6:58 AM
@ThiefMaster, is there any way to check out what javascript is being used by any form element?

7:35 AM
You probably want to ask that in the JS room if you have the necessary SO rep. Anyway, what exactly do you mean "by any form element"? A site can use JS even if no forms are used at all.

7:53 AM
@Matt_2.0 As John mentions, comments are usually cleaned if the information was added to the question, or if the question was closed for example. I'll take another look.

7 hours later…
2:57 PM
oh.. was not aware of that.. its fine.

well, we recently got the ability to un-delete comments
so if you think we messed up (always a possibility) just let us know

well I was unaware if it was deleted because she thought I was being rude or a flag

ah, doubt it. Just general clean-up

overall I thought the answer was bad
morning, too

3:47 PM
you working today @JohnB

@Matt_2.0 nope! little bit of programming if I stop being lazy and get motivated

always good to be lazy one day
thinking of where or what to get for breakfast

it's lunch time!

ha.. it is

2 hours later…
5:34 PM
Balsamiq officially kicks ass

@Dominic I know Yisela likes it, I haven't used it that much

@JohnB I have some very basic issues with it, but it's so useful that they don't matter
Took me 3 hours to wireframe a page
compared to as much as a day before

5:56 PM
nice!

4 hours later…
9:39 PM
@Dominic Completely agree :) I also used Pencil for a while, because it's open source, but (in my opinion) it's not as powerful unfortuntely

anyone ever hear if candle smells actually play a role in productivity?

hi Matt!

sup

oh btw, your comments are never rude nor bad!

just weirded out eveything I was commenting disappeared.

9:47 PM
about the productivity question, I have no idea, but imagine there might be something against strong smells in the office

thought about making it a question

did you check in workplace.stackexchange.com?
there isn't an exact same one, but there's this one and this one, that are about "etiquette' rather than productivity

no not yet

This is interesting though it has no references
"Our senses of smell can even affect productivity in office environments. Specific smells have been found to increase alertness which in turn results in higher productivity rates. One study found that when lemon oil was diffused throughout a Japanese office building, productivity among data entry operators increased by 54%. Scents can also be used to ward off mid-afternoon brain fog by revving your concentration levels."
lemon oil 54%? wow

@Yisela That is interesting!

9:57 PM
but it's a good question, you should post it

has it got a reference though

the llittle article?

I leave for 5 minutes and you guys talk about candles without me

I just looked yh it just says one study

no, it doesn't. That's why probably a question is a good idea, because the workplace guys must know more about studies
yeah, very trustworthy

9:59 PM
I'm never sure whether to trust 'one study' lol
followed a fact account on twitter and it got progressively more far-fetched with less and less references
I'm afraid I might repeat a bull***t fact

I can't see any lemon-related productivity miracles in google
as your case, it dies in a twitter message

It sounds like it could be true though

@JohnB Hi John!
54%? Seems a bit too much

depends on the sample eh

It's data entry, which I imagine can decrease productivity as the hours go by... IF some smells can make you more alert, then maybe it's possible

10:02 PM
but of course the smaller the sample the less it can be trusted
I read that Tuesday before lunch is the most productive time of the week

should I post it in GD because it would be design related or workspace?

Certain scents can have effects on us, but in a situation with other people I'd advise against it.

@Matt_2.0 I think because it could be any type of office, as you posted it at first it would be better for workplace

I, for example, am highly sensitive to many artificial scents and would immediately start having problems concentrating if not breathing.

you can maybe limit it to 'creative' spaces, but then again, it's something workplace.se will know more about

10:04 PM
@BESW yh people might start frowning if you break out the chloroform

@Dominic xD

And candles, specifically, are an awful idea in most businesses. Smoke allergies are fairly common, as are smoke detectors rigged to alarms, sprinklers, and the fire department.

on a different note I hope to look at a house tomorrow =)
its on an acre, flat, and a shop around back would really nice ;)

@Matt_2.0 I look at houses every day :P

yay!! Good luck :) :)
sounds amazing!

10:06 PM
buy me one then @Dominic

I suggest you instead experiment with a dab of essential oils on the wrist or the tip of the nose.
@Matt_2.0 Ooh, nice.

for me, the best productivity tool is classical music
it really does work

@Yisela Baroque music, actually.

I don't choose to look at them, they're just there lol

(A great deal of "classical" music is baroque, but it's the baroque in particular that makes it work.)

10:07 PM
I use Photoshop to wireframe and then design the pages

try out Balsamiq dude
its just so much easier
and quicker

@BESW I don't know that much about it, but I love Chopin and it's not baroque

but I usually go to straight design after wireframe

I'm on a free 7 day trial but I've already decided to buy it

Dr. Silvard Kool, for example, is a modern contemporary pianist whose pieces do the same thing, brain-wise.

10:09 PM
it's the wireframing that speeds up so much

@BESW I dismiss your science, this is magic we are talking about

and you can see how an idea looks and tweak it almost instantly

funny I am wireframing in Photoshop now

comments witheld

when I did wireframing in photoshop my client(s) would almost always tell me: "Ahh.. but those are not the colors we talked about" or "I think we should change this font"

10:12 PM
do tell

If you were a horse, and Balsamiq was water.. I'd be able to repeat a cliche saying

Im sorry I just wireframe the placement ideas then go to a pixel design

@Yisela SCIENCE!

thinking about it, I don't think I use balsamiq for my own projects... it's mostly for others, so they can see what something will be like
did you use it for a personal project, Dominic?

@Yisela I'm using it for a client project at the moment, part of the reason is to show him and get it approved but it's also for me to plan the aesthetics and structure.
not the colors though
it's a limited palette
Could argue that it's not so great for responsive design, but what is

10:17 PM
did you check the extensions? I downloaded quite a few elements that were not in the basic controls

@Yisela thanks, I'm having a look now

ux.stackexchange.com has a balsamiq plugin
and that's it, I know we are overexcited about this program so I won't say anything else about it xD

I don't want to bore anyone to death about it either.. but what dyu mean? o:)

@Dominic If you ask a new question in ux there is a button to add a balsamiq mockup, that you can do online :D

bummer I am torn between WordPress's Woo or OpenCart for an eComm site

10:24 PM
I avoid wordpress, looked at opencart before and it was very promising

why?

because if you only work with plugins and ready made tools and templates, you can end up with a whole lot of CMS stink and overbloated page weights
If I have a need for it, I'll be looking at learning some PHP to tweak it myself

not logical since I have 12 eComm sites to build

I think it's great for very easy package-sites, that will never be changed except for contents, or for fully personalized sites (if you fancy php)
I like it for shops, but I haven't tried Magento so I don't know if that one's better

Magento requires you to spend alot to run.

10:28 PM
It's just that the only one I've worked with, built by another developer, was absolutely terrible.

spend time or money?

Such as OpenCart allows you to use shared hosting but you cant with Magento
Magento is for the large companies that want to sell 100K worth of product
OC is for the smaller 50K people

@Matt_2.0 Buying an SSL certificate puts you on a unique IP though doesn't it?
and I think all ecomm needs SSL

they all SHOULD have it but it doesnt put you on a dedicated IP

oh ok, I think opencart is great anyway

10:31 PM
opencart is nice but a pita to design around.

but I haven't gotten that familiar with the interface so I can't say for sure

Ive done a few OC sites now but integration for a blog sucks

a pita?

Pain in the AZZ

haha!!
all i could think of was pitta bread

10:32 PM
theres a local guy actually about 20 mins down the road that is a wiz at OC development and I thought about outsourcing my themes to him
ha @JohnB came here and disappeared

gosh.. what makes a "Buy now" button more clickeable?

it its on clearance

I tried with different texts, different sizes... still get no good enough results
haha

Define "more clickable," please.

more people will click it

10:41 PM
a) Get a better product; b) pitch the product better.
Seriously though, Evil Hat's Buy Now button is probably a great example of doing it right.

since you guys are here whats our take on Critiques?

I think they should be broad enough to be useful for others
(for questions)
critiques in chat are always welcomed

It's in a contrasting color that is used for highlights in the page design. It uses a sans serif font. It has a motion-symbol icon.
@Yisela I think that's a trap.

I love making a new color palette =)

@BESW how so?

10:44 PM
While I agree in essence, my experience on rpg.se says that when people are told to make their questions broad enough to be useful to others, they think that means widening the scope beyond their own problem to the point that answers might not actually be useful to the original asker.
Good questions are specific but generalizable, not generalized from specifics.

@Yisela I read about a study with references that says orange has the best impact on making users click a button

well... it would be the same thing

It was done by amazon I think

@Dominic That's... interesting, although not very convenient for my 'light blue' site. Ughh.. xD
@BESW Sounds like the perfect question! We should aim for those!

I plan to use it sparingly on my blue site

10:46 PM
I'll try it...

blue and orange are really nice together

"This is my problem. People with similar problems will be interested in it."
is not the same as
"This is a generic issue many people have. I have a specific problem that falls into its category."
The second produces vague answers that may or may not be useful because of the poster's specific circumstances.
The first provides answers that demonstrate techniques for how to address specific circumstances, many of which will be useful to other people even if they don't have that exact problem.
@Matt_2.0 Yes, but avoid Lazy Poster Syndrome.

??

@BESW I don't see how those are contradictory, both currently accepted, one better than the other. It's the OP's choice.
And...
ORANGE works with light blue!

10:50 PM
@Matt_2.0 I just stumbled across this webstore.amazon.com
"Amazon Webstore is Amazon’s stand-alone eCommerce platform, allowing you to run your online direct-to-consumer business on Amazon’s secure, scalable technology."

ha look at the monthly fee. Not worth it

didn't look that far, don't know what you need
I just came across it while looking for the orange button study
still looking..

I hate paypal officially

@Yisela It's not something rpg.se is entirely in agreement on anyway, and if the OP actually wants a generic answer then that's fine.

I keep accidentally clicking the x on chrome every now and then..
lose all my tabs!!

10:53 PM
The problem is that when we tell people that questions are better if they're useful to other people, then the poster is likely to artificially expand the question's scope.

anyone know a way to restore last session?

Q: Should I use a narrow system tag, or go broad if possible and use system-agnostic?

Jonathan HobbsI am playing D&D 4e and I have a question about how I can create an excellent pirate adventure. Since people have pirate adventures in other RPG systems, and Stack Exchange is about useful answers, should I tag my question with dungeons-and-dragons or maybe system-agnostic in order to cover a wid...

@Dominic History drop-down menu.

Yh I knew that one but I have to go through a huge list
i just want all the tabs back as they were 2 minutes ago

Should be an option in one of the first side menus, perhaps under "Recently Closed." It'll say "restore last X tabs," where X is the number of tabs before you closed the browser.
Or something similar to that.

Nope can't see anything like that
just a long list

10:56 PM
I know the option you want is in that menu somewhere, but it vanishes when it's not available so I can't track it down on my end.
(I really really really dislike contextual ontology.)

I thought you could drop an .aco file in Illustrator?

also it's showing a list of tabs from all my devices, and I have a lot of tabs open, also two different sets of tabs in two browsers.. I think it's a bit of a fail by Google but that is hard to do..
They should add the option for an "are you sure?" alert

For closing the browser?

yep

They've got one for closing it through keyboard shortcuts.
Also, I just closed a set of tabs and got "4 tabs >" as the top item in my "Recently Closed" list on the History dropdown menus.
It had "Restore all tabs" as the first option there.

11:01 PM
do you have a couple of different browser windows open plus an android device synced?

I had two browser windows open and closed one of them.

I don't have any mobile devices with sync capability.
Back in a bit.

That is awesome!

@JohnB how you extract colors in AI?

11:04 PM
@JohnB awwwww

@Matt_2.0 select the group of stuff, click the new button on the swatches panel
it'll say "do you want to grab the colors from what you've selected?"
or something
(if that's what you're asking)

no =/

oh, what do you mean extract colors

how do you take the swatch colors I have created in a group and extract them to an external file in AI

ohh
there is a wayyyy
hold on

11:06 PM
it only allows me to save it out as an .ai file in the swatches folder

that's the only way I know how to do it

@JohnB not acceptable.. you show know all Illustrator questions, lol

I found it
the little icon in the top right on the swatches panel
save swatch library as ASE

FML.. the whole time... thanks.

we learned something together, I've been saving mine as AI :)

11:12 PM
oh snap
it does EVERYTHING in the swatches

I thought it might

I hate the Illustrator TROLL who allowed Myraid Pro the default font when you click the type tool

@Matt_2.0 I'm reasonably sure you can change that in Preferences.
If not there, then alter the default body paragraph style.
