12:46 AM
nice shots @Ryan what were they for

went to an instagram meetup last night. just hung out with a bunch of other local photographers and did all sorts of shots

oh cool
how are those arranged..with the app or some community thing? I'm guessing they weren't all phone snappers

a local photographer that's sponsored by Sony and has a massive following organized it. Probably about 8 models and 50 photographers. It was a bit much honestly, I don't think even he was expecting such a large turnout

sounds fun!

12:52 AM
haha, yeah I can see how it might have been a bit much

hmm did that image work for you? I see "Image not found"

yup

I only brought 3 lenses. my 50, 85, and 7mm projector lens
I regret using the 85 so much. I should've stuck with the 50. So much sharper and better
I only used the 85 cause of how crowded it was so I could stay a little further back

sure what more would you need :)

1:16 AM
made a lot of new followers from it. Not sure if they'll all stick around but its pretty nice. Got like 20 in one evening out of it
totally asked out one of the models too :D not sure if she's going to blow me off but she seemed interested and said yes so hopefully lol

:D smooth operatah
not a bad evening, then

Anybody here know how to compress a PDF with like a slider or some tool which produces many compressed versions of a PDF?
I've got a problem where i often have to scan to PDF and then compress the image to be uploaded to websites. Problem is that they usually have very low max file sizes
Ofcourse, the text still has to be legible. The way i do it right now is to try different PDF compression websites and see if any of their outputs can come below the threshold and still be readable. That and fiddling with "save as optimized PDF" settings in acrobat. Problem is that it's very cumbersome, even for the optimized PDF settings you gotta try dozens of quality levels to get something that fits
I'm looking for a tool that'd sorta either give you a slider or just produces dozens of PDFs of various sizes at once

@AayushAgrawal do you know what the max size for any given PDF is?

6 hours later…
8:12 AM
@Ryan Yes and no. Different sites have different max sizes that they'll accept, generally anything from 50-500kb (PDF may have more than one pages)

11:25 AM
hey peeps

lolwut?

You said peeps.

12:10 PM

Nice peeps

Hello, Vincent
I'm rather jealous of your Japanese, I must say

Why?

hehe just thinking of all the jrpgs I could play...
I like Japanese visual arts

Ah...

12:19 PM
my personal logo was a Sakura flower at one stage ;(
cherry blossoms are the only thing I like about where I live right now ¬_¬
also my vaporwave obsession is spiralling out of control..

Here is some vaporware for you

@joojaa nice rendering :P
what is it

A electric motor housing and output shaft
Still missing the back plate

cool, is that your workshop in the background?

No
Its a workshop spherical image that comes with my cad

12:39 PM
lies, @joojaa lies!

Yes thats why its vaporware.... Does not exist

:D
youtube vaporwave...related but I dunno

1:11 PM
@johnp I'm not that proficient :(

aw hehe
have you ever tried Japanese typography design?

with a kanji dictionary and google translate, I can get the gist but it takes patience

not even sure how glyphs/words(?) are selected over there
sounds like me with Irish

oh they just enter it phonetically and the software suggests kanji
This is about as far as I ever got with that

that's cool :) you paint those strokes by hand?

1:16 PM
nope sweatdrop

lol
I love those minimal poster layouts I see on pinterest from time to time. Vertical text is lovely

I think I know which ones you mean. I'd love to try to make some of those but... time :/

2:00 PM
@AayushAgrawal right but do you know those sizes
Do you have a list that says:
Site A) Max 250kb.
Site B) Max 500kb.
etc...

2:30 PM
good morning

hey there @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ

@Vincent last day of feb man. this year already blowing by

Q: Learning the technical side of graphic design

bzalSo far the skill of design has only been intuitive to me, but just learning from tutorials doesn't give you the full view of the many technical issues, which I'm very eager to learn. What can I do to learn this side of the graphic designing? For instance, a tutorial would say to adjust a cert...

3:04 PM
@Vincent yes yes.
so your workload fairing well?

pff yes, I'm plastered with work :)
some of it very nice and very well-paying.
you?

ya Im triple the workload right now

oof

trying to pace myself before burning out

how is your back?

3:11 PM

Q: Intermittent Failed to upload image; imgur is rejecting the request

reneJust now when trying to upload an image with the image uploader I'm greeted intermittently with the following error: Failed to upload image; imgur is rejecting the request That error comes from the POST on http://meta.stackexchange.com/upload/image?https=true I initially was on an non-encr...

hm.

getting a failed to upload and disappearing images in Q&A is intermentant

that's no fun

3:22 PM
stuff like that is why I haven't moved all my images to a hosting provider
@vincent so you got any new fun web projects?

3:38 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ some :)
main development is that I finally found a developer company I trust enough to outsource dev work to
so I can focus on the design and have to swear way less

@Vincent ah man no love, lol
let me know how that goes. Like some details on your workflow process. Would like to start outsourcing, too.

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ I do love dev
I just don't love it more than design :+)
I really run into walls with dev sometimes, and they are more frustrations to me than they are learning opportunities

ya I love dev more then design now these days. Unless its icons, for some reason I enjoy creating icons

4:05 PM
Time for your daily snoot.

4:19 PM
honk!

:D

how are you @johnp ?

4:36 PM
@Vincent I'm good...cold. I left the cafetiere on the hob and it shmelted. So now I have to replace it before my sister finds out I destroyed my xmas gift lol
working on some type concepts but they're not really working thus far...

5:11 PM
@johnp whioops

1 hour later…
6:40 PM
@Ryan Why'd you remove my comment on your answer? It seems like an abuse of mod privileges to me
For reference, I commented on this post saying something like, "If the answer is, 'ask questions on here' then the question itself is too broad :P"

7:27 PM
@ZachSaucier it was flagged as not constructive and it really isn't. So I don't see validation in your accusation of mod power abuse. What overall factor does that comment add? Couldn't someone argue that your comment is opinionated? Also, comments are temporary by themselves.

what do you mean, "comments are temporary by themselves"?
I believe that getting a question closed is constructive, which is what my comment pointed to do

@ZachSaucier comments are not technically meant to be permanent under a question or answer

But they are unless otherwise removed

that's where the community should help maintain the site. Unless a comment adds value to an answer or question it's left. Your comment is neither and is not constructive so I dont understand the issue?
@ZachSaucier not really talking about the question I thought we were talking about your issue with the removal of the comment.

I believe that my comment was constructive, or else I wouldn't have posted it
My comment was a reference to the off-topic nature of the question, posted on an answer that I believe made that more obvious

7:33 PM
well, others in the community did not see that and flagged it. So it was removed.

the community meaning a mod or other non-mod users?

If you feel the question is off-topic then vote to close it.

I did. But we can't close it due to the bounty
otherwise it likely would have been closed
that's why I commented on a mod's answer

a non-mod member flagged your comment as "not-constructive"

Yes, then who approved it? (meaning removed the comment as not constructive)

7:35 PM
A mod's responsibly cannot be to solely close all off-topic questions on the site. That has shown to be an issue in the past. If the community see's it as off-topic they should vote to close it. Since the question has received answers it could be argued that others do not agree with your view.

But the bounty has prevented it from being closed :P
It has 4 close votes

and if it gets a fifth it should get closed.

but it can't currently
that's my point
yet now that it has a bounty, it's gotten answers

Did your comment ask for clarification about my answer?
Did it seek to bring up some point I missed about my answer?
So... you were just using it as another opportunity to say you think the question should be closed.

7:38 PM
my understanding of the system is if the question gets 5 votes it would close regardless if it has a bounty or not.

But the comment is directly related to your answer - it proves the point

and look there.. SE is off line, lol

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ your understanding is incorrect

@ZachSaucier sorry I disagree

it should matter whether or not the community disagrees

7:39 PM
@ZachSaucier that could very well be possible but also from another standpoint the community had two days to close the question before the bounty could be placed on it.

we don't have enough traffic on the close vote system to do that most of the time

@ZachSaucier how so, right now the only person raising the issue is yourself but on the same point the community said your comment wasn't constructive so we removed it =P

@ZachSaucier what difference does it make if my answer in your mind proves your point? Your comment is in no way related to my answer its just you saying you think it should be closed. How is that constructive to my answer?

it's one of the failures of the SE system - not doing great on a small scale

Especially when you say the question cant be closed anyways. But even if it could I don't see how your comment is relevant to my answer

7:41 PM
It can be if you remove the bounty that is getting the poor question answers in the first place

fine I will remove the bounty

That's something to bring up in a meta post or in discussion if you think a mod should remove a bounty to hammer a question

@Ryan I don't understand why
Why would it not be on the question itself or to a comment with someone who has the power to do so (like you guys)?

Comments don't give us the place to discuss or allow others to see and discuss your proposal
that would be an abuse of power if you comment asking for a bounty to be removed from someone elses question and I just said, "hmm okay lets make this person lose their rep"

it goes back to them if you remove it

7:45 PM
@Ryan ya it goes back to the OP

And if we had discussed it I would've directed you to this similar answer: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/40958/…

I'll flag the question next time, but I feel bad flagging a question a moderator answered

I have no problem with letting people know that here is a perfectly valid place to seek help. If anything these questions ONLY because of my answer could go to Meta. But being that the answers can be any number of other things in addition to here I think they're perfectly on topic
But that's another issue entirely than you claiming a mod abused their powers
Anyhow. I'm getting back to work, ping me if you need anything but sounds like this is resolved via @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ

@ZachSaucier I dont even see why flagging it? There is even a rejection for that issue. If you have an issue with the answer you downvote it and explain why you downvoted in the comments. Unless I'm missing something but that's what I was always led to believe

A: How can we close questions with bounties?

Jeff AtwoodThe moderators have a menu to remove / refund the bounty, so this is no longer an issue. Flag such things for moderator attention as the moderators have all the tools necessary to deal with this now.

I'm surprised at how much you guys don't know SE stuff like this :P

7:52 PM
@ZachSaucier yes I'm aware, if you'd look I've already removed the bounty.
@ZachSaucier that's out of line there

I know
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ Saying I'm surprised at something is out of line?

@ZachSaucier no it's out of line for you to claim we dont know "SE stuff"

like this being the key words
because there were 3 instances in this chat that dealt with how SE works that one of you wasn't aware of

It wasn't meant in a derogatory way, only genuine surprise

7:55 PM
@ZachSaucier SE provides zero guidance to moderators. We get a letter asking us to abide by some policies when we're elected. No further links or guidance or anything is provided to us

I call bull on that. That comment is out of line. We do a lot and know a lot and assist this site more then you think and for you to say "3 instances in this chat that dealt with how SE works that one of you wasn't aware of" I guarantee you we know and knew about. If we need to reference documentation we would ask on meta or seek another Q&A or the other provided alternatives.
Regardless, your comment on the question was flagged and we did our duty to remove it as others saw it not constructive. If you do not like that tough.

@Ryan I understand :)
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ I understand that as well
I'm not saying you wouldn't or couldn't learn it, I was surprised you didn't already know it

I hope so because from reading the above I somewhat take you don't. I already well knew about bounties on closing questions, I've already done it several times I do not need a lesson explaining how.

alright guys, I think this is getting blown a bit out of proportion. nobody was called names or hurt or anything. lets all take a breather and relax
and hiya @Be
@BESW even

8:09 PM
the more pressing question is: are playstation controllers inspired by doggy snoots?

of course

:D

that's why playstation is so successful ;)
Do any of you guys use the dark theme for chat?

8:30 PM
@ZachSaucier not right now. I have a plugin for colour inversion though I find it uncomfortable with the chat font

color inversion is so ugly for some sites though

yeah it can be but it does the job for longform articles
