bob's your uncle lol
nice vid. btw what does median actually do
actually i think there was a question on it

I don't have an uncle you jerk!

:O
just perusing through deviant art...i wish i had broadband 10 years ago lol, id be a much muchier illustrator

Was my method what you had in mind?

hehe i knew you'd use lab :P it's much better than messing with frequency separation, which is what i tried

1:05 AM
when I woke up one of the recommended Instagram accounts for me to follow I'm pretty sure was an illustrator you had showed me.
I might use Freq Sep if I wanted to go even further but found it quickly started looking too blurred even using Median instead of Gaussian

was it Alexis Marcou? ;(
funny you said that, you mentioned a friend you studied with or something recently?
and i think i mmight have seen his work on designiskinky
Mike Dargas?

a friend I studied with? Not sure who you're talkin about

maybe it was someone else who showed it to me
nice to get featured on that blog, i love the work on there

that one, feel like I saw her work from you one time

yeah u did
i have more of a thing for stylized figures and anatomy lately
just read horrible news...a young student has been assaulted in my old city

1:13 AM
man that girl was supposed to meet up with me tonight and is again cancelling on me. I don't have time for this nonsense. I would've gone and taken photos somewhere

i was mugged at knife point where the assault happened 2 years ago...i wonder if it was the same guy...

what? mugged when? today?
and what assault for that matter?

aw that's ****, Ryan. I'd give up on her after the second time for sure
oh no bout 2 or 3 years ago...sorry just reading a breaking news story from where i used to study
stuff like that wouldnt be that common there...especially among students.
is it hard to meet people where you are? socially, etc

1:29 AM
for me it sure seems to be lol
I'm not redneck enough for here where the social things involve mudding, fishing, boating, hunting, and watching football while drinking Bud Light

haha aw. i have zero social life since i moved back home. it's mainly family and older folk that live round here
haha
'merica
btw that printshop i mentioned posted an ad for a full time designer...i hope it doesn't effect my prospects of work exp...
i dont have enough experience for the advertised role...

Sounds like a good opportunity and could learn from it
that place is right by me and hiring but I don't think I want to apply there

i dunno...it looks like a head designer role and that would destroy me haha. i wouldnt be familiar enough with large format printers, impositioning and all that stuff

more interested in either marketing / ad agencies or teaching roles for right now. I don't think I'd grow there any more than I am currently except I'd be working with probably younger people which would be nice
Don't sell yourself short, you'd be amazed how little people know
Just look at the questions we get on GDSE if you need confidence booster

haha it could boost my activity on the stack!
are there any marketing firms nearby that you'd like?

1:36 AM
Nah not really
but I think I'm going to start on a Photoshop Book, actually I think I'm going to do 2 books
Looking at Interactive Book options right now to see if I should go that route instead of traditional

that would be really cool!
i think interactive would be much better these days
you mean as a sort of app?

not sure really. That's what I'm researching
for right now I'm going to make one Photoshop book for adults and one for kids
I think that will be a lot of fun
I've written a textbook before

yeah?
any link anywhere

nope, not even sure the external HD I have it on will load either, I think its on the one that doesn't. I'd have to ask the girl I created it with if she still has it somewhere
we did it while teaching overseas because there were no good computer studies textbooks in the country we were stationed

lol so nonchallant - "oh yeah just a textbook I wrote, probably on a corrupted HD somewhere, I dunno"
that's very cool

1:50 AM
pretty much lol

dedication!

Heh. I have almost the exact same thing.

hey @BESW

South Pacific, destroyer of harddrives carrying educational materials! @BESW

Well, for me it was work for a client and the project lapsed into development hell after the funding that was paying me ran out.
So I've got all the material for almost-a-book on a half-dead hard drive somewhere, and the files have passed out of the client's hands into various committees which discovered he didn't have formal model releases for most of the photos (this is a case where I'm quite happy to say "I told you so").
I've done a number of design-and-layout jobs for books and magazines, but on that particular project I was involved in the copy and content as well.

1:55 AM
Oh for our textbook we wrote, illustrated, edited, everything. We made lesson plans and hand outs to go with it too

yikes, was it anything that could be salvaged or expanded upon for yourself or a lost project?

@johnp ...I learned a lot and made some good connections.

Now my external is an SSD I ended up building myself. I know I should go NAS at some point but I don't want to do that just yet

write the theme tune, sing the theme tune? @Ryan :P (Little Britain quote)

@johnp Makes me think of Big Wolf On Campus.

1:57 AM
that's pretty cool, i would so try and find it! employers love that self initiated work
lol thought that was John Travolta epguides.com/BigWolfonCampus/cast.jpg

my dad went to high school with John Travolta lol

haha
what was he like in school

I don't know
I went to elementary school with Mandy Moore but couldn't tell you a thing about her either
oh @johnp not sure if you caught this since you weren't on at the time but this is pretty cool sites.google.com/site/marclevoylectures
the applets might even help you on your glass thing

@johnp The guy in the bottom left corner is the primary co-star, and he also wrote and performed the show's theme song.

i like his hair do
oh yeah thanks. i bookmarked it earlier
a lot of courses are being posted online lately though i didnt see many design related ones last time i checked
i think MIT uploaded a lot of material

2:11 AM
well I started outlining the adult potatochop book I'm going to write. Haven't started on the kids one yet

lol should make potatochop a tag
that was mean O:/
that's what they said about the powersharing government in Northern Ireland when it started lol

Irish Potatochop

yes

Does it go with Irish Whiskey?

it does if you potatochop out the white background
in FAB colour mode
lol you should just make silly puns for everything in the book
say it helps mnemonics

2:21 AM
white balance aint that hard, i can do it from a jpg

lol was thinking maybe it was a bad callibration but nah
strangely a poster i sent to print looked exactly as my monitor proof, though it was never setup

like do they think it looks better yellow? does she think it looks better yellow?
I really don't know. I can't imagine anyone would but maybe I'm wrong :\

it's like when they make McDonalds burger buns extra yellow for that happy effect

I need to get a photo studio. I could be killing it. Makes me sad that people get to have studios with no idea what they're doing

if i had money (even a little) id plan a huge f-off shoot in a rented studio. they usually provide all equipment for a small fee
make a few days of it, put a kickass portfolio together and try and make a job out of it

2:29 AM
yeah there's a few studio rentals around here that have some equipment as well

if you planned two days really well with a couple of models you could really get a lot out of it
it's something id love to do

yeah maybe. I tried the real Sony 90mm Macro in a store the other day and it didn't even excite me a little. Maybe I'll ask to try it again next time and take it out front of the shop for a minute
I think I just prefer using older metal lenses

is there much to be gained from modern lenses in macro anyway?
no real need for any fancy focusing, etc

main thing I thought might be nice is some older Macro lenses extend out to focus where this one doesn't and reviews say its razor sharp
So I had been thinking if I see it for under $800 I'd buy it to use for a few months and then resell it but now I don't think its worth it
I only mention this because using a studio with all that fancy equipment is so far beyond me. I wouldn't know what to do with it. I haven't used anything other than built-in flashes before. I know conceptually how to use them and could probably still pull off better than most but ya I wouldn't rent

it's not that tricky tbh. ive only used the strobes in the photo studio in uni but there's two dials a flash sync for your hot shoe, they set the rest of the strobes off, straight forward really
in fact i would argue it's easier to work with than flashguns

2:44 AM
okay but Sony doesn't use the same type of Hot Shoe as Canon and Nikon if I understand correctly

is it something like a pc cable or some such; i think all it means is using a different lead

I have no idea it all seems complicated to me

you can get some nice deals on ebay for some strobes if you just wanted to familiarize yourself with em

and then realize none of my lenses have any electronic connection to the camera either so its all manual there too
nah its not a priority right now. I'm more interested in getting filters and a new laptop. Was hoping mac would announce laptop today

your lenses dont have anything to do with it as far as i know...it's just the shutter that sets off the cable
i wonder if CC will move to Chrome OS
aside from the privacy concerns windows 10 seems pretty fine to me
the only thing is - they're going to start charging subscription or something for the enterprise versions
the back story to that must be hilarious^

2:54 AM
"Oh great one you're so great!"
"That's it! I can't tell if this person is being sarcastic or not! I've had it! No more sarcasm!"

lol id love it was a cleaner or something

No, superman no home.
Consuela is one of my celebrity crushes lol

my favourite is the resurrection of jesus one
in the tomb lol
should be a question close reason
"No.....no"

I recently learned we can get notifications of certain topics in chat. I want to make a meta on it but waiting until the other mods have more time

as a mesg post or a news feed type alert

3:07 AM
we can pick sites and exact tags we want to show up in our chat. From what I understand we can even specify to only show questions with bounties from a specific exchange and tag

ah righty

I want to make a meta post allowing people to name what they'd like to appear and if anything gets probably 4 votes or something we'll implement it

that'd be a nice idea for some of the interesting qs
i was thinking of a question earlier but it's very vague...not sure it would work though i have nack for narrowing a question's focus for SE lol
something like how can i use wit to make a design/illustration more appealling/effective

I think after my last meta rant people have been much less inclined to close vote so you should be good lol

in semiotics i think one word is synecdoche
it's like a type of substitution of a word to mean something else or for comparison...applies to images too
i hope so lol
still, answers are hard to get. i may have to bounty the glass q

3:16 AM
ask and ye shall receive

Q: Prototype Visualization: How can I learn to render glass convincingly?

johnpRendering design prototypes for many materials can become easy once you learn to predict how the material will behave in given lighting conditions. However highly reflective and transparent materials are much harder to predict – glass, in particular. That said, I notice many marker visuals for p...

aw you're too kind ^^ thanks for that

sure thing. Bounties is what I do

the bountyhunter
I think I'll try to write up that wit question tomorrow. I know there's a whole book on it but I have splurged on materials too much recently...ever read A Smile in the Mind?
title seems to sum it up really

nope

3:25 AM
i may torment the local library for book loans again

ya I've given out way more rep than anyone as bounty
looks like its me then Scott then Vincent then JohnB
when I first became a mod I was asked to stop giving away rep until I at least crossed the 10,000 mark

haha philanthropy
it would be cool if there was a store for rep on the site

7 hours later…
10:09 AM
I don't really understand why anybody in their sane mind would upgrade to illustrator CC

Cai
@joojaa the only reason... everyone else has and you start getting files sent to you that you cant open
happening to me more and more

@Cai well ok ho the hell do I make the line and ellipse tool NOT show the object selection. I mean drawing lines is a bit annoying if you always have to draw the line from opposing end back

Cai
10:25 AM
@joojaa I have no idea what you're talking about... did they break the line and ellipse tool in CC or something?

well yes after you draw a segment or circle it put this Powerpoint type object handles on last drawn element. But off course that means i can not draw a line form the ned of my line or it tries to move that line. Now this breaks my workflow.

Cai
Ah I see... good job Adobe
Think I'll stick with CS6 :)
Does "Hide Edges" help? Guess that's probably still going to be annoying but maybe slightly less

@Cai well I thought that breaking the line tool was impossible but apparently not

5 hours later…
3:54 PM
:P

:)

@joojaa only workaround I could come up with is to do Object > Shape > Expand Shape on the line segment, it'll remove the PowerPoint-like handles

making the final raspberry pi for tomorrows pure data exercise
@JohnB yeah that works but is not really practical as i draw about 30-40 lines per minute

binding a keyboard shortcut shouldn't slow you down too much

yes but theres a big difference in drawing 30 lines per minute vs 15 lines its the difference between will do and can not be bothered
Remember i use illustrator for its mouse feel with snap enabled so I'm already on net negative use

4:01 PM
I'm not defending the change but I don't see how adding a keystroke halves your productivity

i don't actually pause between linedraws
to press a key needs me to stop moving mouse for the time that i press the button

okey dokey

What are you trying to do in the most simple terms Joojaa? Or JohnB if you know

just curious, why do they need to be individual lines?

I'm not sure I understand correctly but if I do I'm pretty sure there's a setting for it

4:03 PM
because I'm doing final rendering and connecting corners
@Ryan according to adobe forums there is not

what are you trying to do in the most simple terms?

Using pen would only start deleting pieces magically
disable the live object handles for line tool objects
in fact i would like to disable entire feature I don't actually need handles for scale and rotation
I mean handles for something complex like a elbow in a text label would be fine

yeah this is why you ask me not adobe :P
click on the icon next to Shape
that's what you were after right?

wait i have to change computer
I'm currently on Raspberry pi

wait why does the Pen tool delete things?

4:14 PM
@Ryan can't find such icon
@JohnB because if you urn in on yourself clicking on a existing point will turn to delete
im not blocking shapes I'm really drawing boundaries so i have t junctions and so on.
ill make a video once i get home

@joojaa I think you can hold shift to not delete the point on the line you're editing

Yeah but line tool is less work

@joojaa that is bad
that is what you want I believe
click to switch

Hmm maybe but i haventy got the newest CC apparently i don't see that icon anywhere

4:20 PM
2015.3?

dunno i left that computer and I'm packing for home
My main concern is what use is there to have 3 handles for a line?

i mean if your going to be live atlas let me type dimensions on screen

if not you might just need to make sure its ticked off on that menu

oh ok
But still totally wasteful feature
if i wanted to draw in powerpoint i would
But I'm using illustrator for a reason
but yeah thank for your help I'm sure that is it

4:24 PM
oooh nice Ryan, you're right
I didn't know about that either

Aand this is why I asked here

I'm not just a pretty face for Photoshop questions ;)
I want to buy that so badly

Yes you are... cute as hell.

here have a flower Joojaa, it matches your new gravatar
meanwhile my sunflowers have now been viewed 17,600 times on Unsplash and downloaded 93 times in less than 48 hours
definitely need to start selling something, maybe my soul.

3 hours later…
7:12 PM
sup

heyo

it feels like a wednesday but Im glad its friday.. taking a day off has thrown my week off

hey room. nice pic @Ryan
it looks like it's glowing

7:27 PM
this room has been wild lately..

uncontrollably wild @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ ? :P

I post a lot of crap, I admit

ha I have the record for being the biggest mouth here, you could say, I scared everyone

Joojaa's new job, you've been busy, Vincents away, and think I scared everyone else off

7:30 PM
vincent on vacation
Ive been reading, waiting for my desk that I should have gotten last month, then I'll really be busy, lol

ive been real busy actually too and itll be worse before better. Next week Ill be away so nobody will be here to keep JohnP company

haha aw no
my hermit lifestyle has been laid bare
I suppose I should try leaving the house more, talk to humans and stuff

you could also go on an edit spree.. it would raise you rep

I have a few questions in mind I may post...they're broad so I would have to narrow the scope like with that prototyping one

7:38 PM
didnt mean ask a question. You're under 2k rep so if you make an edit to improve a question or answer it is a +2 if it gets approved
holy cow, that is a lot of rep for a question: stackoverflow.com/questions/9329446/…

i may give it a go again. I'm a little anxious about editing as an OP told me off in the past for doing so

@johnp who and where?

oh I can't remember, sorry. It was a while ago. To be fair some posters aren't very clear at all in what they're asking

@johnp you dont say, lol

haha biggest understatement of the century

7:52 PM
anyone else watching mr robot

nay, last thing I watched was the Returned, the french version

no idea what Mr Robot is
