hey @PieBie I just accepted an edit but I actually meant to reject... so I think somebody else has to go there and reject it as well?

which Q or answer?

0
A: Adobe Photoshop CS5 (12) - only partial coverage when clicking with brush or erase tools

user2882496Try on Brush setting > Shape Dynamics> SizeJitter to 0%

ah, I already rejected it, so I can't reject a second time
maybe @BESW can help?

yeah, and I should have rejected as well but I accepted by accident... who replies to answers inside the answers?

@Luciano it happens, slip of the finger. That's why we have rollbacks and edit histories :)

8:15 AM
Hmmwha?

oooh
how to rollback? mods only?

Hmm. It's definitely not mod-only.
19
A: How do you rollback?

Infinite RecursionUsers with more than 2K reputation can rollback any post, it is part of the full edit privilege. The rollback option is available for these users in the edit history of the post: Users having less than 2K reputation, can flag the post for moderator attention using "Other" option and describe t...

I'll take a look at that, thanks a lot peeps

Cai
@Luciano I rejected it. No need for rollbacks :)

8:37 AM
@Cai thanks

@Cai that's why when I looked at it I couldn't find the rollback button, thanks anyway :)

Cai
9:35 AM
Ah @Luciano you can edit now! I was wondering why so many of your edits were popping up when I didn't see any to review!
oh yeh and you said about reviewing edits earlier.... should have realised that haha

I better step up my game, Luciano's breathing in my neck :p

3 hours later…
12:31 PM
hehehe I broke the 2k barrier a few weeks ago... on the flipside I don't get any more points for editing :(

morning gents
and ladies if there are any

o/

oh look 9 flags, most because someone joined to call me names on a 2 year old question.
Destroyed!

what was that? so much effort just to be rude!

"Ryan, you sir are a ________" -- flagged 4 times as rude/offensive, one time as spam, and one time automatically for being so short
ah well, that user no longer exists

12:44 PM
I also flagged that answer as rude, but I mean why so much effort just to call somebody names...
on a friday!

@Ryan Hey @Ryan, happy Friday!

@Cai hmm I'm pretty sure Exists is correct

Cai
@Ryan "Exists" is singular, "Exist" is plural
(and the statement was about multiple thingsā€”i.e. plural) :)

hmm yeah nevermind you're right

Cai
1:09 PM
@Ryan do you know that website is his?

yes a quick search confirmed it

Cai
Ah ok! I had a quick look and I didn't find anything
I think he just works there, rather than owning it but yeh

just protected that question too so it doesn't get bumped again by the next person trying to promote their own freelance
Can you see Deleted answers from others @Cai ?

Cai
yep
I was thinking about protecting it

its so fun how questions I think are good and important go largely ignored (like your Lab one and the one I currently have bountied) while some old question about how to hide guides was bumped with multiple new answers

Cai
1:19 PM
I know. its sad :(
That guides question had multiple new answers that were exactly the same as the existing answers too :(
well except for the one calling you names...

wasn't the first time although Vincent's nicer than me. He didn't destroy the account last time

Cai
actually yeh there was another one calling you names too lol

Q: Remove the center of an image

CommanderMooseI'm trying to remove the grey background out of the center of this blue shape. I don't know how to select the inner path of the graphic and remove the grey only.

do you understand that?

I just commented
not sure if they're trying to remove all of the gray or the gray from that inner area
@Cai hey hey the other one didn't call me out by name. It said everyone was a ______

Cai
@Ryan I think they meant you ;-)

probably

1:42 PM
@Cai you answering it already?
@JohnB morning sunshine

Cai
@Ryan yep

hi! Are you surviving Hermine alright?

yeah some tornados by my mom who's a bit north of me. Just heavy rain here
jeez everyone just showed up all at once

someone blew the conch

glad you're ok @Ryan

2:08 PM
I meant to ask you @JohnB - those bottles you screenprinted; is it possible to print on glass like that without professional equipment?
I know there's a little screenprinting kit at the art shop but it's only about 50-100 quid

depends on your definition of professional, there are relatively inexpensive starter kits you can get
okay yeah you could totally print on glass with that

cool, I may look into it ^^

Cai
@JohnB how do you screen print the bottles? Do you just use a regular screen etc?
printing flat surfaces is hard enough lol

regular screen but instead of using the squeegee I just roll the bottle on the screen

Cai
they look good btw!

2:11 PM
@JohnB you see the 3d printing liquid thing?

its pretty amazing

@JohnB that guy's videos rock. The printers he sells seem to be the best on the market as they are hardly ever any used for sale

yeah he's a cool dude

Cai
2:13 PM
@JohnB awesome! now I just need something to bottle haha

Cai
I've just started growing my own potatoes..... potato sauce?

vodka :D

Cai
@JohnB Ah yes. The best kind of potato sauce :)

2:16 PM
hehe for a minute i thought it was vacuum dog in an immersion tank or something

oh yeah I've seen this done on guitars! So cool to watch, that must be fun to do

but then at the Brooklyn Afropunk festival last week they did it to people

Cai
@Ryan whaaat... I have no idea whats going on there but its super cool

got the video on facebook trying to find it on youtube

you american gents have anything fun planned for the weekend

2:18 PM
admittedly I have screen printed on myself to see how well it would work

@Cai you can try something similar at home with paper marbling if you have a bath

it is tricky to do alone but plausible!

but you can marble cups, etc

2:19 PM
@JohnB boom.. screen printed tattoos on the beach.. Im down for that, moving to FL now

haha

just for you @Cai (if nobody beats you to it)

Q: Knockout, Subtract, or Compound Shape in Illustrator. When to use which?

RyanI often see suggestions of using Compound Paths, Subtracting Front Shape, or Knockout in the creation of vector graphics, for example, in Illustrator. When should each be used? Are there specific functions or drawbacks to any of them? I understand that Knockout is to go all the way down, but I s...

wow that hydro immersion technique looks so much nicer to do than that vinyl shmelting thing

Cai
@Ryan ooh, I'll have at that later if no one else does :)

A: How do I progress my design aesthetic beyond the linear minimalist style i use for everything?

FelanceDesigning is like bodybuilding. Have patients to workout (train) long years or take a shortcut with steroids/oil (steal). Both will give you nice physique (earning money). All beginners after learning the basics of designing needs to put some more years for studying/ practicing in these fie...

I want to downvote that just for their opening about steroids -.-

2:34 PM
yeah that is a reach haha

3:12 PM
do you take steriods Sir Liftalot? :P
(I'm assuming you don't)

I don't personally but all of my training partners do

I'd imagine they're tough on the heart
not taking into account hormone stuff

ah they have some issues. Some of the good outweighs the bad if you know what you're doing but once you go on its pretty much on for life
But its not a magic pill like the guy in that answer is implying. Oils yes, Steroids no. Oil is literally just pumping oil into yourself to make it appear bigger no different than plastic surgery really

how does that effect competition entry? (or does it?)

it's the equivalent of wearing this i.ebayimg.com/images/i/201140993762-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

3:19 PM
most Powerlifting and Bodybuilding competitions are not drug tested and everyone is on

one of my favourite music producers says she's giving up music and going for UFC ;( makes me sad
wow that's crazy
lol @JohnB

4:11 PM
Lindsay Lohan's case against GTA for using her likeness has been thrown out of court
I know there were some questions about using a person's likeness on this stack...

I'm surprised to hear that was still in the works

supposedly it's been going on 2 years lol

wasn't the art based on a photo of another model anyway?

i dunno I think the photo pose and body was very similar but the artwork doesn't look like lindsay's face
im not sure but if you flip lindsay's pic it's very very similar

4:14 PM
this sort of thing would worry me when piecing an illustration together
hehe maybe a combination of the two

I can't see any judge ever declaring that in favor of the actress. Simply put, Lindsay Lohan isn't that special

Currently studying an anatomy book just to avoid the fear of this sort of thing :/

being blonde in a bikini doesn't cut it

true
and it would set a precedent
lol
nah that was bold

2 hours later…
6:41 PM
@johnp if you're interested I just did a write up on how to develop negative color negatives in Photoshop. Might make it into a 60 second tutorial this evening
0
A: Remove orange filter from scanned negative

RyanFromGDSEAlright well I didn't have one of your exact negatives to work from but here's a quick solution for you: Convert to Lab Color Mode Do a Curves Adjustment and invert the L, a, and b channels. To do this pull the black point all the way up and white point all the way down. Now its still got a col...

worked pretty well if I do say so myself

oh cool - worked well

Just did a reversal of it to turn anything into a color negative too

What way would you go about colorizing a monotone portrait

monotone or black and white?

sorry black and white
in the past ive used gradient maps

6:48 PM
there's actually this nifty research project that attempts to color old photos for you. I haven't tried it but a guy I follow did some testing with it and came out good
one sec Ill get the link

sometimes it can look a bit monotone in places as in a colour painting it would be warmer in spots like around the nose and mouth
cool that might be helpful
i find colourizing can look a bit...i dunno what the word is really

impressive, though neural networks will eventually replace my existence ;(
all the illustrators will end up in a natural history museum, preserved like mamoths

I never really tried coloring a black and white by hand. I guess if I were to try to do that I would basically be painting it
the one girl I know who did try to do that a lot I never felt it had a good range of tones. Maybe she put down too much ink. It always looked kinda flat to me almost like if you see someone wearing too much makeup
has that kinda flat matte look to it

yeah it does
the problem i think is that saturation varies in different parts of the face
and hue shifts

6:57 PM
I finished a tutorial to mimick the "gucci" style for someone on the retouching group. I'm sure as soon as I post it I'll get talked down to about how wrong and worthless I am by Javier
it was finishing processing when I left for work this morning. Just have to get home and upload it to youtube

looks good to me, but yeah - that group is very pretentious. someone i spoke to on a dating app joined and the shade is very strong in this one ¬_¬

^ thats not me. Thats the reference image
what they asked how to duplicate
I dont have mine at work with me
@johnp shade? I'm too old for your hipster jargon

ah right haha. lol i meant how critical they were of touchup work.
this is an artist i follow on fb. as far as i know it's painted directly in colour. Even though it's stylized you can see how edges of her cheeks and her nose are a redder hue
i think that's where a lot of colorizing methods fall short

yeah Im sure it can be done but probably most because they're photographers dont have the know-how and dedication to really master it
As far as crossing into painting and really understanding colors and everything

yeah, i was always a disaster with colour realism which is why painting frightens me :P but im determined to improve
it's one of the reasons i love graphite, charcoal and carbon

7:21 PM
Ill hopefully spend some time this weekend with the water colors and camera depending on weather
It'll probably be real quiet for you in chat. Its a holiday in the States so us stateside don't work Monday

cool, as it's florida the ground prob wont stay wet after the storm for long, though watercolour is nice for painting wet streets if you wet the paper first for reflections
^ and yes, it will be quiet. I really need to try meeting humans in the real world. There's a huge music festival on this weekend that my friends are at but I have to start paying off my college overdraft ¬_¬

yeah that painting is WAY beyond my skill level
I'll start with color wheels
I could maybe, just maybe, do that in Photoshop with my Wacom but not with Watercolors

haha mine too! i just meant the wet steet effect is nice. think you just lay down a clean water wash - painting wet into wet
to get the most out of your watercolour, i'd advise building from light to dark with layers of washes. unlike guache where you make the paint really opaque
hope i dont sound patronising, just passing on what i was taught

no not patronizing at all

it's good in a way cus you can get a lot of values out of a small paint palette by just adding water
arguably the most beautiful watercolour paintings are the ones that work with the qualities of transparency
talking about it makes me wanna practice again

7:36 PM
I have to get another full page ad done in the next 3 work days. They contacted me two days ago asking if we wanted to get in on another issue for half price after they had a spacing issue which was great but had to send the ad I was working on to meet the deadline

oh nice one, this is the kind of work you prefer?
any word on that staircase company?

I dont know that I prefer it but its what my day job is lol

lol well a full page ad sounds like more freedom

a buddy of mine just started working for a large ad agency that works on huge campaigns. I'm thinking about applying but he was supposed to pass me a contact name and hasn't

hmm just ask him again...if he's reluctant then myeah to him
i think ill be starting work exp at a small printshop in town soon. not crazy exciting but it's a start i guess. my hope is to get serious about illustration in my free time

7:49 PM
what kind of stuff do they print?

well it's a print shop but they do some bits of design, which is hopefully what ill be working on
they do some offset though i think they've switched to digital mainly. they do embroidery too
it's mainly local businesses, branding

but i mean is it quality or budget?

haha i have no idea

like we have a printer next door to us that really only exists because of us. They're completely budget

they can output high quality material but as for inhouse design im not so sure
i just dont want a big timewarp void on my CV. hopefully i can learn more about print & colour output too

7:53 PM
thats good at least. the place next to us have one or two good printers but they dont calibrate them or know how to
if I were to ask them what ICC Profile to use they'd have no idea what I was talking about

lol
i hope they callibrate! i imagine they do
even more so as i would like to borrow a spectrophotometerer
i have a better idea than i used to but colour management is still a bit like quantum physics to me

8:22 PM
sigh and it just started pouring 30 minutes before the end of the work day

when it rains, it pours

8:44 PM
@Ryan you should just surrender yourself to the tempest like in a Shakespeare play - pathetic fallacy xD (This is you walking home from work >>>)
sorry that video is darker than i remembered xD

9:36 PM
20 more minutes for the video to finish uploading. Meanwhile the model posted a photo from some other photographer that needs serious serious serious post processing help
but she's a girl so everyone says she looks hot and shit anyways

9:47 PM
@joojaa Check out this fractal artist ello.co/sya/post/j0fqr_obgn5owyevtryg-a She publishes the code on deviant art if you wanna play with it
hehe is that jelousy I detect @Ryan :P

no its a, I feel bad for her because she really could be a great model but she needs to be more critical

i guess if you know her well you could expose her more to some professional work, give her a taste for it

I told her when we last shot that this instagram.com/p/BHasJQEA_UC/?taken-by=make_it_rayna is really needing a retouch on her legs and if she ever needs I'm happy to do it for her
^ thats just bad

my typography improved dramatically when i started following some good curators

she posted this today which is better than the above but still could use some serious help instagram.com/p/BJ3LjomAV5C/?taken-by=make_it_rayna

9:51 PM
yeah to be fair I agree

she has great bone structure, and a great personality. But posting photos like that isn't going to help her get in front of real agencies
That and she envisions herself as a Victoria Secret model and I think she has a much better chance of making it in the higher fashion world
I'd like to think what I just posted to Instagram is a bit more refined than the above

gunna watch now
nice video - very straightforward
im not crazy about using colour fills personally - not sure why
id probably use gradient maps but that's just a habit of mine
i must practice your method for lumo masks; whatever way i do it is very fiddly and i dont create separate channels to refine them

10:17 PM
I have no idea what other way there is :\

haha it's the same thing but with ctrl/shift/alt clicks to intersect the darks/lights/mids but it doesn't give you the same control and it's fiddly remembering those shortcuts
i read it on fstoppers i think

huh thats exactly what I did

without creating extra channels it seems you dont get to choose the ranges of brightness though
like you did

oh just don't intersect more than once before creating the alpha channel thats all

yup

10:21 PM
the guy from the retouching group on facebook just messaged... "thanks, can you also do one for this other style"
... hah, no.

lol
i have considered leaving that group but i do find some users tips quite good
the criticism is cut-throat

I'm sure I'll get shit - you used Lab!? Thats dumb! You missed a spot on the retouch! You used color fills! That photo isn't worth working on!

hmm self-serving attribution makes me vewy angwy. "you are bad, therefore i am good". Cruel humans
What would anyone in that group do if they didn't have photos handed to em? They're far too critical of anyone who uploads their own pics

want to know the best part of my tutorial. The guy who wanted it sent me a photo to work with which I ignored. Because it was a low resolution jpg of an Indian woman

aw that makes me sad
the range of expertise in the group makes it harsh by default i guess
why do you think they dont like LAB?

10:31 PM
I imagine its foreign to many of them. Admittedly its not the best for dodging and burning
But that tutorial wasn't about dodging and burning

really? how's that? does it create colour shifts or something?

One second. Saving a PSD
Its just different from what most are used to. Its much more sensitive because of the huge range it has
Then if you're used to your workflow certain functions dont work in LAB
Selective Color being a big one

i sees

But once you know how Lab works I think its still probably the better one to use.

10:48 PM
it feels like aeons since ive been in Photoshop properly

I just blocked the guy from messaging me on facebook

lol spam?

he had sent 8 messages to me asking for 3 more tutorials

oh dear

11:08 PM
HOLY COW! Javier didn't hate on my video

haha well he didnt compliment you on it either

11:24 PM
I'm just hoping a few of them subscribe lol

11:43 PM
lol
