8:50 AM
@ZachSaucier Yeah. That's par for the course these days :/

2 hours later…
11:08 AM
Affinity Designer Windows Beta released last night. Not sure if you can signup now or not, I put my name on the list a while ago. Here's the link though if anyone wants to signup and see if they can get it: affinity.serif.com/en-gb/windows

2 hours later…
1:08 PM
morning

hey @Darth, how are you?

good

things went well with the site?

ya got a site configured and up. working on learning how to import JSON into WP right now

JSON?

1:13 PM
yes, restful APIs and the future, lol

what are you going to use it for?

going to use it to import information from other sites..
interesting what you get when you add a honeypot, lol

1:34 PM
hello everyone!
A warm welcome to @DanielLisik

hi all
it feels like Friday but its Thursday :(

@Ryan hate when that happens...

Hey @Ryan, @Pie
and welcome indeed @DanielLisik

@Vincent howdy mister Dutchy

bows how is mr. Belgium?

1:50 PM
lifts up bowler hat very good thank you very much

bowler hat? Are you Thomson or Thompson?

2:07 PM
none of the above

good :)

@Vincent and anyone else that uses Instagram: creativeboom.com/resources/…

90 IG accounts! do they come with some free spare time?

hehe

2:45 PM
hey

hey joojaa and everyone

vawes

o/

maybe i should make a tool set for info graphics seems to be a more dam and for that these days

what tools would you have in mind?

2:55 PM
i dunno something that helps you to pour data inti illustrator in a premassaged form
@JohnB i would stal some of the plotting fnctions of mathematica for starters

cool

3:19 PM
speaking of infographics

Hm. poor design.
c'mon, an outline around a zebra-striped area?
:P

the mix match of "Year removed" icons is a weird choice too

yeah, it's confuzzling to say the least

on that subject, I'm a member of the microscopic minority of people that aren't fiercely against the notion of ditching the 3.5 mm headphone jack
buuuut, it depends on the functionality of the successor

@JohnB I have tried to find and use a reliable and affordable wireless set of headphones for about 20 years. No luck yet.
So I am all for keeping it!

3:29 PM
a-ha, I'm on the flip side of the coin. I recently switched to wireless and even stopped carrying around a set of wired as a back-up
that's for use while on the move, anyway. At home, I've got wireless headphones for my PC as well and I wouldn't ever want to go back
neither of these use a 3.5 mm jack

Ah, what brand do you use and what did you pay for them?

PC is Logitech G930 which is on the expensive side, something like $80
let me look up my Bluetooth ear buds, some no name brand but relatively inexpensive
they are a little bit on the bulky side but they don't pop out of my ear while biking which is all I ask for
as far as ditching the 3.5 mm jack on phones, the key feature that I think must be included to make it work is to be able to charge your headphones or leech power from your phone. Without a fallback, it's a big downgrade

If anyone is on Massdrop please go vote for this just so it gets more views and interest: massdrop.com/vote/Wide-Gamut-Monitors-with-99-AdobeRGB

@JohnB tbh, I just don't think there's a single good argument for ditching the jack

@PieBie I can't argue with that, I certainly don't have any. I would just be one of the few who wouldn't miss it
put me in the apathetic category :)

3:39 PM
@JohnB I think I would. Although I used to have a bluetooth dogtag thingie to connect my headphones

@JohnB sounds good
Good wireless buds would be great for biking. I always end up mangling my phone's jack into oblivion

no doubt there are far more people who make a legitimate case for keeping it around

I just think it's needlessly vulnerable on phones
when the phone's in your jeans pocket, and there's a plug in the jack, you often put too much strain on both
and I don't even wear particularly tight jeans :P

I have a $12 pair of headphones I bought at a gas station :\

@Vincent same here :)

3:43 PM
my biggest fault is forgetting I have them in with my phone in my backpack, swinging my backpack off and ripping them out of my ears

@JohnB something like that, yes.

I used to have a Jabra BT3030

@Ryan nothing wrong with that, that's the price range I go for too. I've abused far too many over the years to spend any kind of serious money on them
@PieBie that's cool! I've never seen something like that

yeah, it's really handy, but it broke due to years of abuse :)
the best thing about it is can convert any headphones to bluetooth phones

Only time I wear headphones is at the gym. If I get a new pair it'll be blue tooth

3:53 PM
Now I've got the Marshall Major 2, corded although they also exist in BT

ooo classy

and the sound! it's the best sound quality I've ever heard for under €100

@Pie that looks cool indeed

@Vincent yeah, especially if you're a rock and metal fan like me

lol

4:04 PM
anyway, it's past 6PM here so it's time for me to say goodbye to you all and wish you the best
see you guys tomorrow

4:14 PM
same here! wave

1 hour later…
5:22 PM
@Ryan just downloading the beta now

@johnp nice, let me know how it goes I gave up on it for the moment cause it needed .NET Framework which my office computer doesn't have and I didn't want to install it on a computer I don't own

i wonder if it will run on linux xD
with wine (love how it's called wine)
i hope affinity publisher is out by the end of the year
indesign is the hardest thing to replace

the font talk from yesterday has me wanting to get one. I've been looking for a geometric font for personal use, I think I like this one myfonts.com/fonts/latinotype/arquitecta

ooh looks nice @JohnB
FF SuperGrotesk is a nice geometric one...might be a bit austere though
FF fonts tend to be on the expensive side

5:38 PM
I really like Ns with pointed vertices, like in Futura
but I want to be a snob and get something more niche than Futura

me too
haha i love posh fonts
there was an alternative to futura that was used in East Berlin and Germany after the wall was built....can't remember the name
one source for some posh fonts is the identifont blog...there are some beautifully designed fonts listed that are usually sold outside of myfonts and other marketplaces

oh nice, never checked out their blog

yeah they dont seem to update the typographica site much anymore but it's the same writer i think

6:15 PM
previewing on that site isnt great

ooh, I like this one

I published my methodology to use a web page as a desktop background if any of you are interested

nice! re: OS X, I'm vaguely familiar with Übersicht which is in the same ballpark as Rainmeter
allows you to use CSS/HTML/JS to create desktop "widgets"

huh
I wish I had a Mac to play around more

sounds cool @ZachSaucier

6:30 PM
I haven't really used it so I don't know how capable it is, I just know it's an option

Sure, looks promising
I tried writing a version in Applescript, which I assumed would be easier, but couldn't figure it out
the guys over on the Apple.SE didn't reply at all either

in other news my charcoal powder arrived :3 looks like im gunna have to wear a facemask for it though

2 hours later…
8:13 PM
ah it's just as i imagined ..yay

@johnp check this out fstoppers.com/bts/…
Im halfway through the video now. The negative scanner gets the file to some 340 megapixels

oh cool ill have a look after i finish this part of a sketch
oh it's film? that's pretty cool
6x17 film!

he shoots with a medium almost large format panorama film camera and then scans the negative.

medium format is usually about 6x5 or 6x7
that film scanner i mentioned is still for sale
but im just scared to buy it as the shop has just launched
but it's the next level down after drum scanning or a nikon coolscan 9000 which are what scanning services normally use
i could nearly offer a scanning service myself if i got a good set up xD

I once thought about getting a Laser Printer to do that

8:18 PM
laser printer?

er woops laser cutter

there are very few services like that round here so i could probably make it work though it's a bit of a commitment

Eventually as I grow I wouldn't mind getting a high end printer to print my own stuff with and then I'd let others use it too but thats a long ways down the road

what sort of printer you thinking...a canon pro?

Nothing yet. Not even in the equation yet

8:19 PM
the next one up after my pixma is about 700-800 dollars

I've got enough stuff to research and think about

but a product review company said the pixma was better quality
but who knows

for anyone interested in just getting a 4k monitor but not worried about AdobeRGB for print Massdrop has this beast being offered: massdrop.com/buy/lg-34uc87mb-curved-ultrawide
@johnp I don't know anything about printers really yet. I do want to get some of my stuff printed locally though to hang in my apartment

i dont know all that much either xD other than the giclee printers tend to have 7+ inks
for larger dynamic range...the one i have is pretty good with about 6...improves grayscale

yeah the company I work for is partnered with a print shop but they're terrible

8:29 PM
it seems to be a real craft in itself - fine art printing

they have no business at all being in the space but they've got a good sales person and focus on low budget jobs that really don't care about quality anyways

i have to submit my photography assignments there in august

"there"? In USA? Florida? Orlando? What do you mean?

there are procedures for even handling the prints and drying them
Ireland sorry
This is the guy I'll be going to
mentions his equipment on that page

8:42 PM
@JohnB lemme know if you buy any type :3

I will! Though I should progress a bit further than a rough Ai mockup before I actually buy anything

cool
