12:05 AM
@Cai thanks for the answer. Playing with that right now and I will add an answer of what I did as I'm modifying what you put and who uses IE anyway, lol

1 hour later…
1:12 AM
Anybody here have experience with this guy and his brushes?

@BESW I've used his free sets
The Animator Pencil was weird to me. I prefer Cubebrush Basic 3 still

Do they work as advertised? Or did you have any problems with buying/downloading them?

They worked perfectly for me
I've heard good reviews from professional animators too which is how I found them

1:29 AM
Cool, thanks!

sure thing :)

11 hours later…
12:29 PM
Alright lets see if I can crank out this Vector Prep tutorial real quick

12:42 PM
sup

@Darth_Vader yo

12:57 PM
how you be this fine day of humidty?

humid.
hey guys
it's warm an humid here as well
and I'm falling asleep

alright done with my mini-tut. Time to do actual work. Yuck.

I know the feeling. No motivation today
It's my last day before a short trip and I'm not having anything urgent to do anyways :P

where you heading?

Edinburgh
4-day city trip

1:10 PM
going to the castle?

saw you ended up going to your friend's wedding, @Ryan
How was it?
Among other, yes! :D

@Vincent its 96 here and it feels like you walk out in a train
@Vincent agreed! Id rather be trying to finish the meta box but work pulls me back in, lol

It was a lot of fun. Really nice ceremony

@Darth_Vader it's low 70s here but humidity is close to 100%
Did you end up going to the bachelor party?

No that was a week before the wedding and I just couldn't do it
But we were drinking and getting into stuff every night lol

1:14 PM
sounds good

do any of you github?

oh no. I hate that github overcomplicated mess

lol

great answer on the vectorisation Q, @Ryan!

@Vincent thanks, not being an illustrator I hope its decent and not steering people in the wrong direction. I think an experienced illustrator could probably draw these things without much prep work, if not draw it without any reference images

1:24 PM
yes awesome work
why am I letting AJAX kick my butt?

@Darth_Vader I could make a Dutch soccer joke about that which you would never understand
Ajax is the name of one of our foremost soccer teams

@Vincent ha.. good one

lol you funny man

@Darth_Vader I have a Github profile whiwh I occasionally use for comments, but i don't actually use it to host repo's. Company uses BitBucket for that

@Vincent that's so funny I forgot to laugh, lol
@PieBie thinking of contributing more on github.
I NEED more collaboration with developers..

1:33 PM
contribs on GitHub don't necessarily lead to more interaction with developers :D
no but srsly, there are a lot of 'dead' repo's on Github, but it can help get your code out there

@PieBie well I did like several sites I saw integrating github. Will be playing with that later on

and Github does make you more 'findable' for people
there's definitely a community, but I'm not really into that so I couldn't tell you about that
I'd say: go for it, not much to lose

Met these guys while working on a photo, you can see me sitting behind me when the drone takes off:
was really awesome to see in person, I gotta get me one of those!

@PieBie I keep all profiles separate. At most of you find my github account people still will not know who I am, as I'll be a ninja..
@PieBie I think more of it would be to remove the wp plugin Im using that has been failing lately. Clean code snippets is my goal
@Ryan nice drone

@Ryan awsome shots

1:40 PM
no wonder that drone was so cool... it costs $1500

@Ryan there are better for less

such as?

@Ryan give me a sec and I'll show you. What are you wanting to use it for
you can preview it on the controls.. that's half the price and 4K

@Darth_Vader wow, ninja Darth Vader, that's something I'd like to see

@PieBie but you cant.. defeats the ninja, lol

1:52 PM
@Darth_Vader Hah! Good point!

Ninja Vader is pointless. You can't see him in the shadows, but his ragged breath always gives him away

lulz

@Zach yup, thanks! :D

@Vincent you hear my breath it's too late

@Darth_Vader with that apparatus of yours, I hear you from half a mile away :P

1:54 PM
oh funny drone story.. so a friend witnessed a photographer flying their drone in the city... they were new and accidentally click go to home and crashed their quad directly into a building..
@Vincent damn.. I cant think of a comeback to that, touche

2:08 PM
Think I might go pescatarian

@Ryan say what?

what

lol
vegetarian but still eating fish, right?

fish, eggs and dairy

I've been cooking family dinners for a few years now on the "roughly vegan but also fish" end of things.
It's the crossover on the Venn diagram of our eating habits/health needs.

2:12 PM
@BESW nice! have any cookbooks you could suggest?

I cannot recommend Tassajara Cooking highly enough.

@Ryan ya I couldnt do that. I have to have meat.

BESW Warbird delurking close to our left bow, captain!

Mmm. I'm up late washing dishes after having spent a fair amount of time and energy trying to help someone clarify an RPG.SE question that turned out to whole cloth.
[irked]

@Darth_Vader I've already been going meatless a few days a week for a couple of months now. Don't feel like its healthy or right to feel like I have to have meat two or three times a day every day. And vegetables taste better anyways, its where all the flavor is. But now after Harambe I think I want to give up meat entirely
that really upset me

2:16 PM
Harambe?
ah the gorilla

If you're looking for noticeable feeling-healthy-ness, (and this is hard for me!) cutting out dairy products and limiting high *tose syrups is what really changed how I felt.

@Ryan I dont have meat three times a day.
@BESW agreed

@BESW I already limit high tose syrups. I never have soda, fast food, or deep fried stuff. All coconut oil and olive oil for me usually cooked at home

if we are going to go healthy are we also going to give up coffee as it's terrible on the liver?
@Ryan soda was my big enemy. I had at times 6 a day. Now I like just water

2:19 PM
@Darth_Vader Nah. Cold brew coffee all the way.

no life sans coffee
just, in moderation.

Really, moderation is the key.

I have fastfood or delivery pizza every now and then.

When I do eat meat, I prefer it as a small part of a meal rather than the primary ingredient.

I eat meat a few times a week.

2:20 PM
@Vincent I cant eat fast food

Stir fries are my friend.

everything in moderation, even moderation :)

@Vincent Sometimes, one must be moderately fanatical.

@BESW exactly. Thats why I was cutting back on meat. But now for personal moral reasons I'm thinking of getting rid of it entirely.

fast food is dead calories. Im always hungry within an hour after it

2:20 PM
and sometimes, fanatically moderate is the way to go :P

but then a mcd's burger is really only 60% meat ;)

@Ryan Makes sense.

@Darth_Vader the rest is, what, plastic? cardboard? :P

chemicals
to keep it "fresh"

everything is chemicals.
you mean additives :P

2:21 PM
not organic produce

^^

I just need to learn more vegetarian dishes, that's the hardest part for me. And learning to make them on my own so I'm not buying pre-made vegetarian stuff - its too expensive

Pescatarian should be easy for me though. My favorite foods have always been fish and vegetables anyways. I only eat meat cause its cheap and available and easy to reheat

@Ryan Tassajara will help with that.

2:23 PM
@Ryan curse you.. I crave sushi now

It's vegetarian (so eggs, butter, milk, but no fish), but the real value is in teaching the basic concepts behind various kinds of food so that you can improvise and adjust and invent with what's available to you.
Also it's written by the chief cook of a Buddhist monastery in California.

@Ryan Did I tell you about halloumi before? It's an Arabic cheese mixture that is a great meat replacement

A lot of what I cook these days falls into one of three categories: rice cooker + steamer; frying pan; casserole dish.

nice. A long time friend of mine is a semi-famous musician and doctor and buddhist. He eats out though all the time lol I ask him what things are when he posts pictures of the food and he never knows. Maybe that book will help
@Vincent you did not

@Ryan It's rather easy to get ahold of here, with the large Turkish / Moroccan subculture. Might be a bit harder / more expensive in FL
but it's great. just have it soak in water for half a day to get rid of the briny taste and use it as you would chicken

2:27 PM
Orlando is surprisingly diverse thanks to the tourism industry. Might be more expensive but I can probably find it

Halloumi/həˈluːmi/ (Greek: χαλλούμι) or hellim (Turkish) (from Arabic: حلوم‎‎ ḥallūm [ħalˈluːm]) is a Cypriot semi-hard, unripened brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, and sometimes also cow's milk. It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled. Halloumi is set with rennet and is unusual in that no acid or acid-producing bacterium is used in its preparation. Halloumi is popular in the Levant, Greece and Turkey. It has recently become very popular in the United Kingdom. == Cypriot Halloumi/Hellim == Halloumi cheese originated in Cyprus in the Medieval...

I'm real big on fast and easy meals, so my go-to is putting onions, garlic, and a fresh veggie like string beans in the frying pan, adding a protein like tofu (diced and broiled til it's a little dry), frying it with spices to taste, blanching kale or spinach on top at the very end, and serving over brown rice cooked with lentils, or quinoa, or something like that.

Especially if they eat it in Lebanon. We have a decent Lebanese population

"Fake meat" is generally awful unless it's not trying to taste like something in particular. Some vegan hot dogs and sausages are good to chop up into stir fries.

I've become a great fan of falafel recently

2:30 PM
Oh, man.

which is just chickpea paste, but with the right herbs. Major Nom to ground control

I'd make falafel so much, but it's kind of a pain to make from scratch and almost all the mixes have fava beans.

hehe, is this the Graphic Design chat or the Seasoned Advice chat? :P

yeah I can't do the fake meats I've tried. But vegetables burgers that don't use fake meats are amazing

@Vincent I left Seasoned Advice chat because they kept making snide comments about vegetarian cooking.

2:31 PM
there's a Vegetarian Place by me that has a really amazing bean based burger. I need to buy it again to try and dissect and figure out how to make it

@BESW :(

@Luciano greetings

yo yo hello

@Vincent Ooh, one thing I've been doing that you might like: garbanzo (chickpea) tuna salad.

I also hate fake meats, but had some very nice vegetarian sausages (most of the times "meat" hot dog sausages have very little meat anyway)

2:32 PM
@BESW as long as the tuna is raw.
I can't stand heated tuna :)

@Vincent grilled tuna steak, no go?

I don't really do sashimi, but it IS cold: mash a can of garbanzos with a can of albacore, add mustard, ketchup, diced pickles, paprika, garlic, sauteed onion, lemon juice, pepper, turmeric, and whatever else looks good.
I use it as a sandwich spread.

Tuna with Avocado and some seasoning is a winning combination

True.

@Luciano should try. I have been sick from tuna steak twice in a row, shortly after another, some twelve years ago. Never wanted to try again after that

2:37 PM
Oh, and indulgent but filling energy snack: equal parts peanut butter, rolled oats, and powdered milk with about 2/3 as much honey. Mix, form into small balls, roll in more oats so you can pick them up without getting it all over your fingers. Refrigerate, preferably for a day or two so the honey starts to crystallise.

oh yes, these experiences can be traumatizing. But one must conquer their fears!

@BESW sounds good as long as I swap out the can of albacore for raw tuna :P

I make 'em for special occasion treats.

@Luciano hehe

I also have vegan pumpkin and vegan coffee applesauce cookie recipes.

2:37 PM
I don't do much peanut butter anymore.

@BESW sounds good

Oh, and if you ever go totally non-dairy, you can get most eggy bread-like recipes (muffins, pancakes, etc) to stay fluffy using the old "vinegar and baking soda volcano" trick.

@Luciano greetings Spartan warrior

And for things that use eggs to stick together, the "vegan egg" is flax meal mixed in cold water.

@Darth_Vader greetings
I mean greetings fellow food warrior!

2:47 PM

lol

3:07 PM
Peace Corps just rebranded itself. Not a fan

Oh, I am.
looks way better than what it was

too much Dove, too little Flag in my opinion
Patriotism with a hint of Judeo-Christian symbolism - fine. Judeo-Christian Symbolism with a hint of Patriotism - not as fine.

3:25 PM
I want this!
Can I start a Go-Fund Me page for one lol

woow that is beautiful - perhaps he could do a smaller version...

3:47 PM
ok, I;m off! See ya dudes and dudettes (and dude-nonbinaries) next week!

4:11 PM
@Vincent ciao

5:01 PM
So I made this zachsaucier.com/tunnelgl/index.html and it works using this resource I got from a demo. I want to create another demo using more of a star look like is seen in this gif (ignoring the other aspects for now). As you can see, the texture is black and white and my JS is what adds the color.
Any ideas what approach I should use to create the new star-like texture?

5:16 PM
I can manually create it using a line drawing zachsaucier.com/my-tunnel/index.html but I need a lot more a lot smaller - is there a more efficient way to create it than manually dragging out each line?
it'd be nice if it had some variance of line length as well...

not sure what star like texture you mean
I don't see any texture

the lines moving in the gif

shorter, faster, more of them, and most importantly vary their opacity

right
any way to create it better than manually doing that for each line?
preferably in non-Adobe since I don't have them currently, but if you do it in Adobe can I probably figure out the equivalent

hmm I don't follow. Wouldn't it just be coding all of the lines to randomly assign a length and opacity?
maybe looking up After Effects particle tutorials would help you

5:26 PM
The lines will be an image in order to prevent having to draw all of them making it more intensive
that image is then used as a texture and wrapped around my around my object making the effect

could you show me the image on its own then

un momento por favor
the smaller one worked alright? just not quite star-like enough for you?

k one sec been a while since Ive done this. Let me try to remember the technique I'm thinking of
and you want it on white or on transparent?

5:33 PM
white is fine

okay Ill give you a few:
something like that?

Lemme see how it looks
what approach did you use?

a couple of layers of Filter > Render Fibers hitting random for each one so they'd be different then adjusting the blend modes and opacity. For each save I altered the Levels

I think the last is more along what I'm wanting

too much? too little? do I get to see it?

5:38 PM
lemme see if I switch the colors
the last one is currently being used

hmm looks a little low resolution. Not sure how you're coding it to know the fix but I'd guess a smaller / tighter pattern still
looks pretty cool though !
think smaller lines still almost dots will help

Could you please change the color of the last one to red? I'd like to see how it does on black

change the white to red or the black to red?

Or I guess I can, lol
black to red

I already closed it but shouldn't be hard to do from the jpg

5:41 PM
lemme download an editor then

now I have to figure out how to keep the cylinder but only show the color texture... I may be able to change the color of it that way... (I'm learning how to use WebGL)

I could just put the red on transparent for you if it helps
could I see that one. I think the more dot like quality will help

I don't think it does. The way it's setup it searches for a color and bases transparency off of it. I'm just not sure why the red isn't showing up
something to do with lighting

hmm needs more black me thinks
@ZachSaucier

5:57 PM
Thanks! I'm still trying to figure out how to make the red show up without the other colors
getting closer... (I think, haha)

the red on gray looks pretty cool
gotta be honest though, they all make me think less star field and more eye
think the lines are still too long. Maybe I should do them all as circles with more space between and I could add a glow to them
hi @Cai

Cai
hey @Ryan
@ZachSaucier I was not expecting that haha
looks good

bah
this is more confusing that I was expecting

Cai
lol

I need to bounty something. I've got too much rep

6:08 PM
You can bounty my question :D

remind me not to look at your tunnel while on drugs
or should I
add some music! lets give it a go

Cai
do it
lol

6:29 PM
hmm actually I think Ill try to make a question on the role of drugs in design
lets see if I can get flagged and thrown out lol

I'm getting closer
though I don't understand how the original demo was changing the color of the texture like it was

hey looks good

@ZachSaucier I'm in mobile so I can't check your page source but could you do it with a CSS animation going from filter: hue-rotate(0deg) to hue-rotate(360deg) and just loop that?
Looks cool btw!

ya, that works for single elements, but WebGL renders to canvas so it'd change the background color as well
The original demo I looked at changed the white color in the texture image to transparent automagically and I'm trying to understand how

6:49 PM
I'm both happy and sad that Creatives Against Depression has already surpassed all of our other ads in Clicks Per Day

@ZachSaucier ya... the black hole

@ZachSaucier right, of course
@ZachSaucier there is no such thing as automagically, only a lack of understanding ;)

'course

7:04 PM
I'm assuming you already know how to do transparency in webGL

This is my first webgl project :)

Wow, I just refreshed the page and it burned my eyes out :p

lololol
sorry, testing

Looking good

7:21 PM
Looking at webGL demo's, my phone's a little stove right now...

Peeps, gotta run. See y'all around. Good luck @Zach, you'll figure out out eventually ;)

thanks

8:07 PM
I think I finally got it working alright

Cai
@ZachSaucier you've got me playing around with it now... I should be working

lol
Are you playing with the code or the images?

Cai
code

let me know what you make

Cai
got it following mouse position
and speeding up on click

8:10 PM
that's the easy stuff :P

Cai
alright! ive only been at it 10-15 min lol
never looked at three.js before either
I like it

Me neither

Cai
set my tunnel on fire lol.... recordit.co/TJSRHTR6uG

fiery

Cai
anyway I need to work.. I'm definitely gona have a proper play with that later

8:22 PM
You guys know there's things you can eat for this right? lol

for some reason I have a square that is turning into a circle and I have no idea why...
@Ryan ?

@ZachSaucier ? not sure what the question mark is for

what are we eating something for?

if you want to see tunnels on fire and and fly through the stars

gotcha

8:27 PM
@Ryan thanks for the article, I'll read it over coffee :)
though ill probably burst into tears knowing I won't get to go there
By the way, what do you guys think of the body type on the It's Nice That website....it's a bit overwhelming on a laptop or large screen
I think I've noticed it on other sites too...

looks fine to me

this is what im seeing
the line length is very long to me...and the type size...

sure you don't have the page zoomed in on accident? I've made that mistake before!

yeah that looks much better...wonder why it's displaying it like a tablet...
no im not

oh on tablet. they probably don't have the media queries set up well for larger tablets
Oh but here's my latest, took this in Miami over the weekend: ryanwaxberg.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/…

8:33 PM
oh nice...ur camera seems to work well in low light
did u reduce noise?

negative

cool

and I took that with a lens made in 1975

lol

Nikkor 28-45 f/4.5

8:35 PM
nice lol
was arguing with a friend of mine recently about trying film for medium format xD he's kinda swayed me to just get a full frame digital...i dunno. you know when u research something so much and kind of get attached to it? lol

go with what you want!

yeah i would...just scanning and the expense of film...but for work it might get tricky
what i love about film, especially the medium format stuff is that it's not abstracted pixel data....it's just a pure chemical light recording....that can be scanned years from now on even better scanning technology and still look great
and there's something about the bokeh as well...it seems to have a purer spatial quality to it...i dunno. maybe im being too romantic about it

what is your concern about it?

well just printing large sizes in high quality
you can get it professionally scanned easily for that...but if i was to get a scanner it would probably be an epson 750 or 850...both of which will only get me a decent 10*12 inch print in high quality
maybe it shouldnt be?

how much does it cost to get professionally scanned roughly?

8:41 PM
im just afraid id lose some of the benefits of medium format after purchasing everything
i havent priced many places really but some are about 50-1 euro per scan
the result is probably similar to digital medium format though
probably a bit lower

that seems reasonable then

i guess for a small series it would be fine...

well for personal projects you can scan on your own. Save the high end scan for when you need the larger size
price accordingly

yeah? i guess so. i keep thinking of how i always look through about 200 shots for a shoot lol. i obviously wouldnt have to scan everything i suppose...
yeah true
developing will be very scary xD especially for commercial work

you can scan everything at the 10x12 size if you wanted to do previewing and working with then just scan larger professionally for clients needing a larger format or if you have a piece you particularly like

8:45 PM
mmm i could...

you're offering a premium service by shooting medium format in the first place so being able to offer that to clients needing posters, signage and billboards for example you'd charge accordingly and have a niche market
rest of the time if you're shooting for clients just needing something for A4 or social media then don't worry about the higher quality scan

never thought of that
you have swayed me again xD

if you know how and have the equipment to do film i'd go medium format for sure. Its a market differential that will separate you from your competitors

hmm yes

Some clients might not be interested and just want some guy with a Canon Mark 2 to take hundreds of photos. Gotta be willing to accept that

8:49 PM
I guess events and weddings would be my main work to start with....I do a lot of illustration work and stuff for fun and portfolio which I'm hoping to break into

rar

Hey @Darth_Vader
I love how small this MF camera is...it reminds me of the modern mirrorless ones in a way
being able to focus in low light easily with a rangefinder would be nice too

problem is only company worth buying a rangefinder from is Leica and the cost is just too high

the mamiya 6 and 7 look pretty decent though

@johnp whats MF?? I imagine it may stand for Micro Finger?

8:53 PM
haha
Medium Format photography

ah.. so this must be what it feels like when you have no clue what someone else is referring to.. got it 👍

lol it's basically for larger photos - cameras with larger sensors
im pretty new to it myself tbh

oh im so glad today is done. I've basically checked out this entire week

aw, you taking any holidays for the summer?
I read that many americans don't take all the holidays that they are given for the year...is that true?

was in Miami last weekend and leave Friday for San Diego until Sunday. Then I work a convention in Vegas for a week then its down to Palm Beach (an area north of Miami) for the weekend
which is why ive checked out for the week. Ready to be gone

8:59 PM
lol
you enjoy the travel though?
sounds fun to me, but i guess if you do it a lot it gets tiring

yeah absolutely but time for me to go. later fellas

chat soon @Ryan have a good'un

9:21 PM
Another big step complete :) I'm learning a lot today
