8:13 AM
hey everyone, it's Friday!

9:03 AM
Yay

9:29 AM
Anyone aware how to shorten the file names in the tabs in PS?

1 hour later…
10:44 AM
@PieBie does it not gethorter once you have tabs that dont fit?

nope, that's what you'd expect, but it doesn't...
so I can only have two tabs open if both have really long file names, which is completely ridiculous

design by adobe then
@PieBie one of my collegues brought up a interesting point
That the entire graphics design industry as such is under threat of computability
And that the entire education in quick need of change and get that computability benefit while we can
before computer scientists do it for you

I'm not entirely following. Are you saying 'good design' will be computed soon instead of created?

@PieBie yes
thats what the researcher of graphics design said

And designers should jump on this train before it's left the station with only computer scientists aboard

10:56 AM
yes
right now graohics design is way too much manual work
For example they teach information design
which is essentially how to display information in effectove way
and they started by getting graphics designers
But now they are moving over to recruit gamedesigners and computer scientists methematicians engineers etc
because its easier to teach them design than to theach the mathematical underpinning needed for the next generation jobs

I can completely follow that.

for the graphics designers

We've been seeing this for years, a certain convergence towards the same designs and interfaces that people like and are comfortable with.

[amused]
That won't last.

I agree with that too :)

11:00 AM
offcourse not if world were a static place we would have much easier time

It's a common error to confuse the gross results of a job with the job itself.

Although I do think it's possible to mathematically predict which interface most people will prefer

@BESW true

And homogeneity is... well, not as useful as it seems.

But that's not the same as 'good design'

11:01 AM
Yes but the problem is tradditional graphics design education brings out homogenity

We see a lot of cases of using "what everyone likes/does" where it's totally not the right tool for the task.

yes offcourse
I actually had a client that requested for crappy code
And he had a very good justification for it

I need to go read Computer Power and Human Reason again.
It's always topical.

11:57 AM
@BESW yes have the book in my hand now

2 hours later…
2:21 PM
hey Friday celebrators!

3:07 PM
hey @Vincent!

hey guys

3:43 PM
hi @JohnB @Pie

hellow guys

how's the week been on y'all?

terrible, Muriel
wish i got more done

I know that feeling
but work has been flying to me like moths to flame lately
starting to understand how you feel @JohnB :)

hah. I got my pile of e-mails down to a manageable amount this week! That's a victory

3:50 PM
woot!

hey @ZachSaucier: should'n the rollback be to the first version, since the second version still isn't really a question but a comment on the original Q?
ah, nevermind, that's not really a question either...

the whole situation is a mess -_-
I didn't want to delete the question, that'd be unfair to the two answerers
but yeah it was basically posted to spam
there, I made it something of a question

thumbs up

4:59 PM
any plans for the weekend?

gonna do some homelab type tinkery stuff
I'd like to set up a local DNS server, probably using a Raspberry Pi but maybe something a little more powerful dunno yet

oh cool :)
no idea what the new pi's specs are like but you could go for an arduino i guess

I've got a few Pis and a few Arduinos, Pi would definitely be the way to go for this

id love to set up a media server in this house. if i switch back to a desktop build i think i may have to create some sort of wifi hub

I've been playing with home-assistant.io, some cool stuff there
I've got Plex on my NAS for media. Plex is amazing

5:08 PM
cool, is that similar to kodi or can you stream away from home with a connection?

yeah similar, you can do remote streaming but you'd need a beefy connection as expected
though it does have the capability to transcode media to a lower bitrate if needed

hmm
ill keep a note of it, though i think im too reclusive to get much use out of that :D

haha
the strongest part of Plex is the ease of setup. It's kinda like "wait, that's all I have to do? It's already working?"

id be really interested in have a remote desktop though on a tablet or something if i switch back to desktop

It Just Works (tm)

5:10 PM
hehe i see
and then they lure you in to their subscription with a talon? :P

haha I did subscribe for a couple months but sadly there aren't really any premium features that would keep me subscribed
biggest one is probably the ability to use their mobile app so you can watch or listen to whatever on your phone or tablet
but I don't ever use that

i guess it's silly of me these days but ive started cutting down on subscription services... on a metered connection here makes things a little annoying. on a similar note i was very mad the other day when i couldn't use typekit fonts as i hadn't been online for a day or two ¬_¬

They do offer a one time payment for a lifetime subscription but I think you'd really need to be a power user, not quite for me

i was saying to my friend: [in 2050] "oh you haven't paid your grocery subscription, no 3d printed food for you today" lol

but I agree, so much subscription stuff gets overwhelming
haha
something I want to check with home-assistant.io is location awareness
as I approach my apartment, my phone will connect to my wifi, and that can trigger my Plex server to start playing some music in my apartment

5:14 PM
on your way home, get the dinner on type thing? lol

pretty coooool
haha yes exactly, if I had a "smart oven" that is :P

aw well that would be nice
lol
i think the only smart kitchen device id need is a smart kettle connected to an alarm clock...though i automagically turn the alarm off constantly
a fun smart feature would be a "turn off the lights and mute the tv" setting for when awkward visitors come up the driveway

omg that'd be amazing

xD
face recognition
